Sanity Squad: Homo Sapiens Lied. Streptococci Died.

Science is objective---or is it? Not when the popular press, the schools, and scientists with an agenda get through with it. Join this week's podcast as the Sanity Squad explores the wonders of scientific research and its discontents; including the unforeseen consequences of Rachel Carson's vendetta against DDT, the vagaries of estimating AIDS cases in Africa, the vaccination vigilantes, and other victims and victimizers.

Fred:

Where can I find more info on annual deaths due to malaria and annual use of DDT?

Jun 13, 2007 - 9:31 am Matthew:

Fred, The Wikipedia entry for DDT is very good even if it lacks annual statistics. Junk Science debunks accusations against DDT. An article at the International Medical Volunteers Association website includes a table showing deaths per year by age group but does not cite the source. Malaria Foundation Intl is another source that does not shy away from DDT. Sadly, the difficulty of finding DDT use information from government, public health or scientific organizations suggests that those who rely on public funding do shy away from mentioning DDT.

Well, the whole DDT argument is a smear against Rachel Carson and environmentalism in general.

1. DDT was never banned for combating malaria.
2. Rachel Carson never advocated banning DDT for use against malaria.
3. DDT is not a magic pill against malaria. DDT has suffered from the smae resistance problems that all pesticides experience.

But facts usually do not dispell a right wing myth.
