** A NEW QUESTION HAS EMERGED ABOUT THE INDEPENDENCE OF THAT INDEPENDENT EXPENDITURE CAMPAIGN FOR ANGELIDES. It’s been learned that a top figure in the “Californians for a Better Government” participated in a key Angelides campaign meeting, although there is no evidence of coordination between the official Angelides campaign and himself on behalf of the group funded by Angelides’ decades long patron and former business partner, Sacramento development kingpin Angelo Tsakopoulos.

More on this in the Tuesday AM news break.

** LATE TV BUY FOR ANGELIDES. The official Phil Angelides for Governor campaign has suddenly bought TV time in three major markets beginning tomorrow. This late buy in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento markets will cost them in ratings points, but buying sources say that the official ad, when coupled with the unofficial TV which began yesterday under the auspices of an independent committee funded by the candidate’s decades long patron and former business partner, will give Angelides a spending advantage for now in those markets over his rival, state Controller Steve Westly.

The Democratic gubernatorial candidate will again rely on his three daughters to speak for him. (4/25 6 AM Update: The script has been moved to the column above.)

** After an odd visit by President Bush to California, which left Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger empty-handed on major federal support for levee repair and flood management and scrambling to escape Bush’s dark anti-green shadow on Earth Day while he establishes his own environmental bona fides in a tough re-election bid, the former action superstar pivoted to crime today, establishing a new Crime Victims Advocate office within his gubernatorial office.

The California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA), also known as the prison guards union, is considering a major independent expenditure campaign against Schwarzenegger in the fall. Schwarzworld is highly concerned about this. Moving on the victims’ rights front may help in part to head that off. Or, of course, it may accomplish nothing of the sort.

Schwarzenegger is also segueing to emphasis of his support of the “Jessica’s Law” anti-child molester initiative for the November ballot. This may, at last, also begin to deal with his ongoing problem with his party’s base voters. With his flurry of Earth Day-oriented pronouncements, pro-solar, pro-hydrogen economy, anti-global warming, criticizing Bush for leaving California high and dry, as it were, with no emergency money for levee repair, there has been precious little of late for the conservative voter to hang on to.

The name sounds quite similar to Crime Victims United, the CCPOA organization.

The prison guards union did a good job of coopting much of the crime victims movement.

Arnold is segueing to crime.

AND hoping to head off a massive guards independnet expenditure campaign against him.

We already have a Board to compensate and aid crime victims. Isn’t the new office redundant?

Hello! The Controller of the State of California sits on the state’s currently existing Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board.

The Governor is trying to pre-empt one his potential opponent’s tough on crime credentials.

Dana this one is an advocate. They get to go make sure the Board gets loads of money. This is absolutely more important than rehabilitating prisoners to make sure we do not have more crime victims.

Whoops, it looks like Phil’s site is down. Get Active is inactive ;) I was going to head over and see if I could view the new ad. They are running a new spot aren’t they? Or are they rerunning an old one?

It looks like Phil Angelides isn’t very good at running one of the Internets.

The angelides.com website is back online. What is the URL to the new “Family” ad Bill is talking about? Give me that, or tell me specifically when all these broadcast or cable ads are running. I watch a lot of TV, yet I still haven’t seen any of these westly/angelides ads. I am an Arnold fan.

Apr 24, 2006 - 7:51 pm 9. Bill Bradley:

The ad will be online tomorrow morning.

I’m guessing that the daughters must test well, or something; seeing as they are in two of the ads, and are the focus/narrators of the long-form ad-umentary “Meet Our Dad” on the site?

Conversely, from what I read in the paper (and - to be sure - this is the Westly spin…) the first ad with Anglides and Boxer and the one with Angelides at the rally didn’t do well in (Westky’s) focus groups.

The IE ad is all firemen and cops, with one little photo of Angelides at the end…and apparently doing the robot!

What’s up with this?

I know the “Wolves” ad by TeamBush was tremendously successful with only an “I approve of this message” appearance by the POTUS, but does Angelides think he can win his way to the governors mansion by hiding from the cameras?

I’ve seen the guy give a talk - and he sure as Hell can give one. Is it that he is a “big room” speaker and not a “living room” speaker?

Whatever it is - it’s time to give it up. Just because he started running for office at 19 doesn’t mean his (approximately) college-aged daughters are a suitable replacement for him on the campaign trail.

I know he’s got to be proud of them. They all seem smart and sweet. I’ve even met Megan, the one who does work with all the young dems groups. She was really nice and charming.

I’m glad they’re good kids, and that they are in dad’s campaign ads and not “Girls Gone Wild” videos…but ENOUGH ALREADY.

ADS WITH YOUR KIDS BELONG ON THE SAME DESERTED ISLAND AS NICK’s CONSTANT TAX-RETURN CHATTER!!!

Which gets me thinking. A reality show I’d love to see would be Nick V. and Megan G. married to eachother. It’s like Carville and Matlin meet Nick and Jessica.

Are either of these two crazy young people single?

Ps. A few months back Rick Santorum had this video out there with his daughter “hosting” it. Do he and Angelides have the same advertising agency? Is Phil mixed up (by proxy) with right wing crazies? That would be too funny!

Apr 24, 2006 - 9:46 pm 11. calwatch:

Quite frankly, the kids are annoying and will become overused. I spoke to a friend last week, someone who could care less about politics, and he used one of the Angelides kids to relate a story about a stuck up girl he met at a bar. Granted, Westly’s “nice guy” schtick doesn’t do it for me either. Both of the Dems ads have been uninspiring and/or annoying. I can’t wait until Arnold’s shop demolishes the two.

Since Ben Davidian knows his ways around the FPPC SO WELL…then he obviously understands that formation of this IE would raise eyebrows.

So did Davidian request a FORMAL (or even Informal) ADVICE MEMO was from the FPPC before the creation of this IE. That would had at least provided ANGELO TSAKOPOULOS, who by any measure is an amazing man, some legal protection as these questionable events unfold regarding this IE.

Tommy Boy asks: “The IE ad is all firemen and cops, with one little photo of Angelides at the end…and apparently doing the robot! What’s up with this?”

Advertising 101–associate a product with something people like/find desireable. Eaxmple: implying sex appeal is related to soda. Firemen and cops are popular with the public (disclosure–I have a nephew who is a cop and an Uncle who just retired from LAFD). The intention is by association/endorsement to have some of that good feeling rub off on Angelides. Will it work, and is it enough for what he needs at this point? I guess time will tell…

Apr 25, 2006 - 9:39 am 14. Dana:

Ouch–my cousin is the cop. My nephew is just a kid (albeit I am pretty fond of him).
