Today is Cesar Chavez’s birthday. This state holiday in California is commemorated
here with this United Farm Workers video featuring the comments of Robert F. Kennedy,
Edward James Olmos, Martin Sheen and music of Santana.

** CESAR CHAVEZ DAY. Today is Cesar Chavez’s birthday, a state holiday in California and several other states. Chavez, of course, was the co-founder (with Dolores Huerta) and longtime president of the United Farm Workers union. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has become, to the surprise of quite a few people but not NWN, a friend of the farmworkers union, was at Cesar Chavez High School in Delano (southern Central Valley, near Bakersfield) on Thursday with members of the Chavez family to present a portrait of the late Latino civil rights leader. A few of the students passed out during the ceremony. It was probably more the heat than the excitement. Sorry, Governor, it probably wasn’t the prospect of True Lies 2.

** IRANIAN CONFUSION AROUND THE BRITISH HOSTAGES. Iran’s ambassador to Russia was first quoted by the official Iranian news agency as saying that the 15 British naval prisoners will face trial and punishment for their actions. Then he denied saying that, although he was quoted on Russian television saying it. It’s always fun when momentous policy decisions are made up as folks go along, isn’t it?

** PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES DESCEND ON IOWA. After holding the first two presidential forums of the campaign season in Nevada, the second-in-the-nation contest, Democratic presidential candidates are descending on Iowa, the first-in-the-nation contest. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Joe Biden, and Chris Dodd will all be there, arriving between today and Tuesday. Republican frontrunner. Republican frontrunner Rudy Giuliani is also set to venture to the Hawkeye State to kick off his Iowa drive.

** RICHARDSON TO NORTH KOREA. Itinerant international troubleshooter Bill Richardson — the two-term New Mexico governor and former United Nations ambassador and U.S. secretary of energy — will journey to North Korea next month. Richardson, the California native and first major Latino presidential candidate, who is slowly but surely moving out of asterisk land into fourth place in the early Democratic contests in Nevada and California, and would probably be higher already if he didn’t have an Anglo name, has had success before negotiating with the North Koreans on their nuclear weapons program.

How old wasw Cesar Chavez when he died?

Mar 31, 2007 - 9:40 am Bill Bradley:

66.

Mar 31, 2007 - 9:42 am Ann:

Does Santana get royalties playing on the soundtrack?

Mar 31, 2007 - 10:01 am Bill Bradley:

Probably not.

Mar 31, 2007 - 10:05 am Capitol Boy:

Isn’t it a Kennedy thing with Schwarzenegger and the farmworkers?

Mar 31, 2007 - 10:36 am Bill Bradley:

That is part of it, but hardly all. I think the governor is moved by the need to help people who have very little and are easily exploited, many of whom are penniless immigrants in search of a better life in America, which resonates with him.

I wonder who is really in charge in Tehran.Mr. Ahmadinejad has been very quiet of late.

Mar 31, 2007 - 11:37 am Capitol Boy:

Is that really Bobby Kennedy’s voice on the soundtrack?

Mar 31, 2007 - 11:51 am Bill Bradley:

It sounds kind of like an impersonator, though that is what he actually said.

Mar 31, 2007 - 11:54 am Ann:

I think it really is Santana on the soundtrack. lol

Mar 31, 2007 - 11:57 am Bill Bradley:

Yeah, that is Santana.

What counts as success in negotiating with North Korea?

Apr 1, 2007 - 2:10 am Bill Bradley:

No nukes.

Apr 1, 2007 - 7:00 am Sacramento Solon:

No nukes…

That’s what the Los Angeles Dodgers said in June 1958 when they traded Don Newcombe to the Cincinnati Reds for Johnny Klippstein and Steve Bilko.

Newcombe, who had been a stalwarth for the team in Brooklyn, was off to a 1-6 start with the Dodgers in the maiden year in Los Angeles. And you really don’t want me to continue giving you more…do you?

Yes, you guessed it, it’s Opening Day and the old guy is grinning. Heading out to the path and putting in some miles before I ensconce myself in front of the telly. Shall vacate the comfort of my easy chair only to get beverages and food.

Bye-bye

Can’t North Korean hit California with a missile? Right there in Dodger Stadium.

Apr 1, 2007 - 8:25 am Bill Bradley:

Who’s playing on opening day, Solon?

Apr 1, 2007 - 10:26 am Sacramento Solon:

New York Mets at St. Louis. The 2007 World Champion Chicago Cubs open tomorrow against Cincinnati.

Apr 1, 2007 - 10:42 am Bill Bradley:

The Met and the Cards. I don’t think the San Francisco Giants start till Tuesday.

Apr 1, 2007 - 11:37 am Sacramento Solon:

Giants do open on Tuesday…at home against San Diego. I think they are the only team opening that late, as most teams begin play tomorrow. The A’s begin their season tomorrow evening with a game in Seattle.

It use to be that the season began on a Monday, but that switched when ESPN forked over bucks for a Sunday game.

Apr 1, 2007 - 12:04 pm Bill Bradley:

Yeah, the NFL opener is on a Thursday.

Too bad about UCLA in the Final Fou.r

Apr 1, 2007 - 12:15 pm Sacramento Solon:

Yes, too bad that the Bruins didn’t make it. But can’t complain too much when the best two teams will be playing for the title.

However, UCLA has a good program, a very good coach, and I’m sure then will be back next year or reasonable soon.

Apr 1, 2007 - 12:31 pm Bill Bradley:

Florida and Ohio States sounds like a football title game.

Apr 1, 2007 - 2:01 pm Sacramento Solon:

It was this year’s BCS final game. Buckeyes were big favorites and had their breakfast, lunch and dinner handed to them by the Gators.

Thing about tomorrow’s game is Ohio State’s staring center, Greg Odom. Kid is 19 and looks 35! This will be his first and last year in college as he figures to be the number one pick in this year’s draft.

Apr 1, 2007 - 3:15 pm Bill Bradley:

Too bad USC blew their regular season finale and had to settle for the Rose Bowl.

Apr 1, 2007 - 4:39 pm Sacramento Solon:

Agree 100%. However, remember, it was a rebuilding year for the Men from Troy. Given their current talent, they must be considered the preseason pick for number one in 2007.

Apr 1, 2007 - 4:45 pm Sacramento Solon:

Name typo above…

It’s Greg Oden, not Greg Odom. Sorry. Offending digits have been disciplined.

Apr 1, 2007 - 9:09 pm Ann:

Did you really write this?

–Bill Bradley :
That is part of it, but hardly all. I think the governor is moved by the need to help people who have very little and are easily exploited, many of whom are penniless immigrants in search of a better life in America, which resonates with him.
