Blogger Mark in Mexico continues to cover the clashes between antigovernment APPO and the Mexican Federales in the city of Oaxaca: an exclusive for Pajamas Media APPO talking heads are denying this morning that APPO lost the Zócalo, and the rest of the city, to federal forces (PFP) yesterday. The fact that PFP personnel are enjoying breakfast in the Zócalo, consisting of "scrambled eggs, sausage, tortillas, salsa roja and coffee", would indicate, at least to me, that APPO no longer has control.
Pajamas Media Middle East Editor Allison Kaplan Sommer reports on the metastasizing sex scandal involving Israeli president Moshe Katsav: “Katsav was a bland party politician, whose rise to the post of president was a result of people wanting to keep Shimon Peres out of the job. At the time, it seemed harmless. Now – as embarrassingly reported in the world press, and in a particularly gleeful tone in the Arab world – it has emerged that his lecherous behavior with women was an open secret for decades.” More here.

More than ever these days, Hollywood has a reputation for slanting material leftward and veteran filmmaker Robert Greenwald (Xanadu) is not helping with his latest opus, Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers. This film accuses several American companies of having blood on their hands and now one of those companies – CACI – has called Greenwald’s bluff and is disputing his facts. Independent political candidates for office in 2006–and, possibly in 2008–are the special focus for this episode of Blog Week in Review. One of the most reknowned “Freerangers” running this year is humorist/musician Kinky Friedman whose candidacy for Texas governor is hot. As a result, this week’s panelists have a distinctly Texas-flavor: Jonathan Gurwitz, editorial writer for the San Antonio Express News and contributor to the Wall St Journal’s editorial page and Ed Clements of KLBJ-AM Radio in Austin Texas and of the television show Friday Night Lights.
As usual, Austin Bay moderates; Ed Driscoll produces. Brought to you by Volvo USA.

“Why should Pyongyang concede anything, when its past talking, dissimulation, and nuclear enrichment earned it both a bomb and billions in food and fuel? All the communists need to do is update the discussions: instead of promising not to build a bomb, they can now promise not to test another bomb in exchange for more largess. Then after they let off, accidentally, kinda of a second blast, they will promise not to launch a three-stage missile-for more cash, and on and on, all in the Rhineland/Anschluss/Sudenland/Poland manner.” (Read the Rest on PajamasXpress)
The latest Glenn & Helen Show is available: “Mark Warner looked to be the strongest Democratic contender for President in 2008 except for Hillary Clinton. We’d been slated to interview him when he decided not to run, but we thought that decision was interesting enough in its own right to justify an interview. We talk to Warner about his choice to bow out, about the state of politics today, and about what he’ll do next. We also discuss anti-terrorism, the Democrats’ problems with flyover country, and the importance of alternative energy, including nuclear power, to address oil pressure and greenhouse emissions. Plus, an interruption by Jimmy Carter!” Brought to you by Volvo Cars US.
