2012: Myths and Misconceptions

Myth: Sarah Palin is finished after resigning as governor of Alaska.

Myth: Romney’s next in line and the clear frontrunner.

From David Frum: “It was Mitt Romney, not Sarah Palin, who came in second in the 2008 contest — and the GOP has repeatedly turned next time to the candidate who finished second last time.” This is a favorite myth that places Mitt Romney as the sole frontrunner for 2012.

This “tradition” covers five open presidential nomination contests going back to 1980, with one exception in 2000, when George W. Bush (not Pat Buchanan) was the GOP nominee. This argument is quite superficial. Does anyone think George H.W. Bush was chosen in 1988 because he finished second to Ronald Reagan, rather than because he’d served eight years as Reagan’s vice president?

In 1996, Dole rolled to the Republican nomination by default. A December, 1992, CBS poll right after the election showed one point separating Dole and Jack Kemp, with James Baker and Dan Quayle in double digits. Kemp, Baker, and Quayle all passed on the race, leaving a race between Dole and men who had to spend millions to build name recognition. Dole already had it as a former candidate and the party’s Senate leader.

The lesson is not that Republicans will always go with a mythical next in line. Rather, Republican voters seek familiar candidates like Dole and John McCain while Democrats are drawn to novel candidates like Howard Dean and Barack Obama.

Reality: Huckabee, Palin, and Romney are co-frontrunners

Romney is far from the only known quantity. Mike Huckabee was right there with Romney. In no year since the beginning of the fabled “next in line” myth have two candidates been so close. Media reports go back and forth over who was “the runner-up.” Some say Romney and others Huckabee. Likewise, no unsuccessful vice presidential candidate has ever generated the electricity that Sarah Palin does. If two of the “big three” bow out, the third will be the front runner.

Myth: Sarah Palin’s poll numbers spell doom for her potential candidacy.

The latest Pew poll shows Americans split almost evenly on Palin’s favorable/unfavorable numbers, with moderates and Independents not digging Palin. Poll numbers like these allegedly show how doomed Sarah Palin is.

Reality: Polls and voters are fickle.

Hillary Clinton had a majority of Americans saying they didn’t want her to run for president. Exit polls, however, showed Mrs. Clinton would have done better than Obama against McCain, winning by 11 points. Ultimately, the question is not whether the poll numbers are incredibly damning (which they aren’t this far out from the election), but whether Palin can turn them around by the end of a long presidential campaign. Analysts may speculate, but the debate is ultimately over Palin’s ability, not the numbers.

Myth: Sarah Palin is finished after resigning as governor of Alaska.

With Governor Sarah Palin’s  resignation as governor of Alaska, many feel that she is finished as a presidential hopeful. It may indeed mark the voluntary retirement of Sarah Palin, but I think her resignation is more likely to offend people in political circles than most voters.

Was it honorable for Palin to resign, to “bail out” on the people of her state, as Senator Lisa Murkowski put it? The fact of the matter is that if Palin chooses to make a presidential run, her approach may be more fitting than other political leaders in light of the reality that the preliminaries of the presidential campaign will require a lot of out of state travel in the coming year. Mitt Romney didn’t resign as governor of Massachusetts in 2006; he just spent 212 days out of state while holding the gubernatorial title. The question then is whether it is nobler in the eyes of men to quit a job you’re not going to have time to do, or to hold onto the job and not do it.

Perhaps we’d prefer Huckabee’s choice to ignore the presidential campaign until after his time as governor had lapsed. The result of Huckabee’s decision was that he found himself starting way behind Republicans who’d spent 2006 campaigning.

In Alaska, Palin faced an ethics system that allowed frivolous complaints to consume 80% of her time and energy as governor, as well as weighing heavily on her staff.  Perhaps the most relevant example was one that was filed against Palin because of her speech to Indiana Right to Life at the end of Alaska’s legislative session. The lawyer who dismissed the claim said, “The fact that the governor traveled to Indiana to attend a dinner (and a breakfast meeting the next morning) did not take significant time, if any, away from the governor’s duties.” What this implies is that if an action does take significant time from the governor’s duty, it could be an issue.

As for Alaska, it’ll be fine. Adam Brickley pointed out that Palin actually extended her influence over the state by allowing her Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell to succeed her and thus extend her reforms. Parnell will run in next year’s gubernatorial primary as an incumbent. Parnell will be able to continue the agenda that both he and Palin shared without being distracted by an opposition that is determined to destroy Palin’s national career.

Some think Palin needed to seek a second term to increase her experience. In fact, in order to run for president she needed to not run for re-election. Alaska’s legislature meets for 90 days starting each January. The 2011 session would force Palin to delay announcing for president for a few months, a minor inconvenience. But the 2012 session would occur smack dab in the middle of the Alaska legislative session, and trying to do the work of a presidential candidate would definitely take significant time from a governor’s duties and lead to a more complex ethics case right in the middle of a presidential campaign.

Reality: The ball’s in Palin’s court.

Palin’s resignation raises some very reasonable questions. Does she have the mental toughness needed for national politics? Does she even want to run for anything again? These are legitimate questions, but we should wait for the answers.

In stepping aside, Palin quoted Douglas Macarthur: “We are not retreating, we are advancing in another direction.” Palin’s challenge in the coming months, if she hopes to have a political future, is to show that she hasn’t retreated and that she is continuing to fight for conservative values. If she does that, then I doubt people will care about the fact that she didn’t finish her last 17 months in office.

I am not sure of 2012—but 2016 might work. At this point in time, it seems that Sarah Palin had to resign because of the insane ethics investigations. The well meaning but naive legislators who originally passed this law will have to eat crow. It is a quintessential example of the principle of unintended consequences. Palin apparently collected only $100,000 of donations directed to help her with the legal costs. She still has to pay $400,000—and she is not a wealthy woman. On top of that, countless hours have been wasted on this nonsense. What else can she do? It is probably better for both Alaska and Palin for her to hand over the responsibilities to the lieutenant governor.

Our election proces has been destroyed by voter fraud and its going to get WORSE with $billions being funneled into ACORN.

Furthermore, Black Panthers were just given a pass by the Obama administration to harass and intimidate voters at the polls. They will join forces with union thugs and an even bigger better funded army of brownshirts on the streets headed by Michelle Obama. On top of that they’ll have everybody from the dead to the non existent voting for Obama in 2012.

By then it will be too late. Some say we are at the point of no return already. We are being ruled by a bunch of lawless criminals.

Our economy and monetary system are on the verge of collapse as we speak. This is without cap and trade and the possible destruction of our health care system by a government takeover.

Funding for our defense is being cut while everybody else gears up for a war the likes of which this world has never seen. I wonder if Obama has ever studied our history let alone Western Civiization or world history.

Sarah Palin to the rescue? God help us.

I think Palin is finished as a politician. And I think it’s because that’s her choice, not because she “commited political suicide”. But she’s not stupid, either. I believe that she’ll disappear for a while and reemerge in a capacity that no one has forseen.

This (I hope) is the beginning of the Pit Bull Party. The majority of Americans are conservative, live their lives as conservatives and hold common sense conservative values unfettered by mindless relativism. Sarah Palin is one of us. She is not one of the elected elites or pontificating pundits who tells us how stupid we are and how, when, where, why and with whom we can wipe ourselves in the restroom – and try to make us measure our carbon footprint while we’re doing it.
With Sarah Palin there is no “center to move to” since she IS the center of the country.
I say let the GOP stumble around from bed to bed, from amnesty program to Massachusetts Health care, from courting blacks to marrying gays and bloviating about which bill is more crap than another. All they’ve become are elites that can’t find their rear ends in a dark room while whining about some member of their own party.
Let them make Tea!

Governor Palin never had trouble with the core republican vote, but in the scheme of National elections it is nowhere near enough. No democrat or republican can get elected with only the core, they must reach the 20% middle ground voters that swing either way in an election. This 20% is where the rubber hits the road.

Asking core republicans if she made a mistake resigning will return a resounding no. Asking people she must reach to win a National Election, and the answer is different. This is where the problem lies, and where her battle will always be fought.

If she cannot define herself, it will be done for her in the web and MSM, truth be damned.

Jul 5, 2009 - 4:28 am 6. LeighB:

Hooray for Sarah! Can’t wait to see what sees does next. She has true star power and the ability to connect with people and get under opponents’ skin.

The GOP has some attractive candidates for 2012, Romney, Huckabee, Pawlenty…and Liz Cheney?

If Obama continues to stumble along and have no good answers for the economy, continues to think he can talk missiles from the sky and that we’ll all be content with being read to by the light of the teleprompter…uh, no. Too much like Carter to earn a second term.

I like cedarhill’s idea of a Pit Bull Party. I’ve got my lipstick, where do I sign up?

Jul 5, 2009 - 5:43 am 7. Captain Obvious:

Thank you! I’m so tired of hearing Mitt Romney is the front runner, and already getting tired of hearing how Sarah Palin is finished.

I think it may be significant that immediately after resigning, Governor Palin’s attorneys announced they would be going after those who slander her and her family. About time she was able to do that. Conservatives still love her.

Mike Huckabee is the front runner among those of us who have taken time to read his books, follow his blogs and check his past performance. This guy says what he means and means what he says. I think he could out-Reagan President Reagan.

This article is a good contrast to the absurd opinions expressed yesterday by Jazz Shaw. But it doesn’t go far enough. I personally would prefer to see Palin as Mitt Romney’s running mate, however Palin attracts crowds like Obama attract flies. Palin will build an organization which will propel her to the GOP nomination and the Presidency. She will be a major factor in the 2010 midterms as she draws crowds and contributions to the candidates she supports. In the meantime she will be writing a book and developing expertise in economics and foreign policy.

You can expect a much more effective and professional campaign than the pathetic efort of Team McCain.

Yeserday’s proactive warning to the NYT and WP not to publish lies that she resigned because she is under criminal investigation arising from the construction of the arena in Wasila is an example of her understanding that Republicans can’t sit back and allow these propaganda engines of the Democratic Party to go unchallenged.

And it’s not too late to say that Obama will not be re-elected. The seeds of economic stagflation have already been planted. The Obama economy will get worse over the next three years. And as the globe continues to cool the idiocy of Cap And Trade will be clear to all.

Jul 5, 2009 - 6:04 am 12. Gary Ogletree:

I’m sure it’s just luck that the main topic all weekend is that gutsy broad from Alaska. After all, you can’t make an announcement on a holiday Friday. And you can’t run for prez if you quit your gummit job. The Democrats have an uncanny, no, a downright Soviet, knack for spotting mental breakdowns in their political enemies. We certainly hope the mad governor gets some treatment soon. And rest, for sure. Can’t have her getting on airplanes and stuff.

Jul 5, 2009 - 6:26 am 13. gordo:

Palin’s resignation speech seemed like a random string of non-sequitors, but, guess what, she has a plan. We have one ticked-off pit bull now on the loose and she will be back with a vengeance and a war chest. It will be a moral crusade unlike anything politics has seen before. Who knows how far her righteous anger will take her, but there will be many victims in her snowmachine wake, some for pay-back, some to make a point, and others who just got in the way. Hell hath no fury like an angry, abused pit bull with lipstick who just shed her chains. And on a misssion from God to boot. Pass the popcorn.

I certainly concur with Steve.

I have a conviction that those who confront Palin, men especially, end up toast. It happened with Latterman, it will happen with those creeps in the Republican campaign team who spilled their bile on Purdum’s receptive plate; and the latter too will come to regret his facile exercise in attempted character assassination.

Steve #2. Excellent post. Almost exactly what I was trying to tell my guests at my 4th of July party. You just said it much better than I.

Sarah has got to be a winner! Look at how the left hates her. They are realyy scared to death of her….because they are scared to death she can win. Just look at the crowds she drew everywhere she went during an overall weak campaign in 2008. She knows how to connect with the common people who make this country work.

My fear is that she may not want to put herself and her family the incredible ordeal of the campaign for the white house.

Jul 5, 2009 - 6:43 am 17. FREE:

Lets hope and pray (not mope and change)that Sara finds the perfect running mate. Cheney? Paul? Romney? Whomever it is it should be done outside the beltway. I sure like the sounds of the PITBULL Party.

Jul 5, 2009 - 6:46 am 18. Jake:

Gov Palin may end up being the stalking horse in the run up to 2012. The MSM and Blogs will concentrate on her while someone else sneaks up on the inside and passes her. That’s kind of what happened to Hillary and Obama. We have short memories.. She had the nomination locked and took the brunt of the opposition press and that let Obama slide in without much critcal analysis. With a little smarter campaigning, Hillary would be President and Obama would be back in DC voting present.

Jul 5, 2009 - 7:19 am 19. NJHC:

O, YE OF DOUBT!! I surely admire Sarah Palin…she is more honest than most of the group in DC. I listened to her announcement. It seems that so much time was being taken from her and her aides, answering all the terribe slander that some have thrown at her, that she felt it was a waste of Alaska’s taxpayers money!!

Wouldn’t it be WONDERFUL if some of the DC crowd had convictions as she does!!
SHE IS INDEED AN “AMERICAN WOMAN.”

MYTH: Palin quit for principled reasons.

TRUTH: Palin quit to sign a Fox News contract, which will give her a venue to spew her minority opinions and hawk her book, which will be bought in the hundreds of thousands by the Heritage Foundation.

She sees the money in the media hills, and she threw her commitments overboard to go get it. I have no problem with going after the money. I DO have a problem with lying about your approach to getting it.

MYTH: Palin is tough.

TRUTH: “Victim of outrageous attacks?” Nothing, NOTHING compared to what Hillary has endured for the last 16 years. Palin folds in 10 months. Palin isn’t tough. She’s simply an opportunist. This is just the next charade in the Palin playbook – she’s the political Paris Hilton – paid to show up and not expected to bring anything of substance along with her. Just stand there a look pretty and say something outrageous now and then, pick up her check and move on to the next faux event . . . that’s hot!

MYTH: Conservatives believe in Sarah Palin.

TRUTH: Conservatives desperately want someone who will mount a principled and believable offense. Before yesterday, Palin was the one because she was a pit bull willing and able to go toe-to-toe with established party interests and fight big government to bring about reform. Today it’s because “she pretty much accomplished everything she set out to do . . . she is serving a higher calling . . . she’s doing what’s best for Alaska.”

The right is known for weak rationales, but this takes things to a whole new level.

Jul 5, 2009 - 7:43 am 22. RandyChandler:

Palin’s political prospects for the future are wide open. Her enemies would love to see her tied down with bogus legal attacks in Alaska but now she is going to be free to fight for the soul of her country, whether it be in a run for the senate, president or party leader. Obamacrats are moving with frightening speed and Palin knows the battle for the country won’t be won in Alaska.

Palin’s coming. And she’s pi$$ed off.

Jul 5, 2009 - 7:56 am 23. Stephen:

Personally, I just hope she goes back to being a good wife and mother, protects her family from media child abuse and allows her lawyers to sue the crap out of any and all smear mongers. She can effectively support the conservatives from the sidelines with a book on her life (to include exposing the blood sport American politics has become and the viciousness of the left in this country), give requested speeches and continue to support pro-life, pro-gun and pro-conservative causes. I could be wrong, but in some ways, I think her voice will become more powerful. She can stay above the fray and speak her mind.

I’d like to see her go farther in politics, but this is not worth the destruction of her family for the fulfillment of OUR dreams for her political future. In the meantime we should help her with her legal fees.

Jul 5, 2009 - 7:58 am 24. Middleman:

So if she is resigning as governor of a state that basically takes care of itself from oil money, over ethics issues and because she doesn’t like the media spotlight, then why on earth would you want here anywhere near the White House?!

Pitbull Party? jeez.. Might as well call it the Backyard Wrasslin Party.

Jul 5, 2009 - 7:58 am 25. mudboss:

PITBULL Party… I like that.

To paraphrase….

“Let’s take a bite out of DC”

Jul 5, 2009 - 8:09 am 26. Saltherring:

I agree with posters “Steve” and “cedarhill”. Conservatives must step up the offensive on Obama’s destructive policies and legislation. Anyone with a brain knew we were in trouble (following the “08 election) but who knew how deep the #@$%*&+? would be piled less than six months into the idiot’s reign? Just how did the socialist elites, their media lapdogs and indolent urban welfare sponges gain control of our country? Answer: “Republican” Party moderates, led by John McCain, handed them the keys to the White House. Solution: Bankrupt the present Republican Party until the present leadership resigns and conservatives take the reins. No contributions, no participation at fundraisers, no support for any politician who crosses the aisle or plays milquetoast moderate. NONE!

Jul 5, 2009 - 8:13 am 27. David Thomson:

“And you can’t run for prez if you quit your gummit job.”

That’s not completely accurate. It all depends on the accuracy of the reports of Sarah Palin still owing $400,000 in legal fees and the enormous number of hours spent fighting those ridiculous ethics charges. The American people will be very understanding if this is made abundantly clear to them. Middle class people can especially comprehend the impact of living under the threat of severe financial damage.

A number of conservative commenters fail to realize the importance of Sarah’s financial troubles. They live in the New York-Washington, DC corridor and raising $500,000 is not really a big deal to them. It’s a modest challenge and nothing more than that. We should not forget that Palin lives in the boondocks of Alaska.

Jul 5, 2009 - 8:45 am 28. John:

1. The quote was wrong, it came frm OP “Howlin’ Mad Smith” in the Korean War (Chosin Reservoir). I am not sure exactly what MacArthur was saying at the time but Smith was the one surrounded.

2. Regardless of what Palin or any of her supporters think, the reality in modern politics is that if you quit while serving in office and do not move UP, you have quit period. The Establishment power brokers of the GOP won’t let Palin run for Wasilla Dog Catcher. Her career as a Republican is over, end of story, people need to quit dreaming or fantasizing about out. She pulled the plug on her political career and that is that.

The power elite respects ambition to achieve the next run. It leaves those who step aside, no matter the opaque tactical or strategic reasons, in the rubbish bin along with old lollipop signs and crumpled speeches.

3. If Sarah Palin is going to make some sort of political comeback it will be many years down the road, and in a far different context. Maybe even after a move to a state in the “lower 48″ and a decade or more getting her children raised and out of the line of fire. MAYBE…

4. It is not a myth that Palin had massive enemy fire coming in from the Left… It was personal and crippling. What most of the “right” analysts are missing is that she had NO HELP or SUPPORT on the RIGHT… NONE… ZERO… ZIPPY… And by help I am not talking of powerless bloggers who love her for her various charms, positions, and principles… I am speaking of the party power brokers who run the political consultancies, advertising, and most of all the power circles that deal with who gets picked to get money, support, and organization.

LASTLY: I am a very PRO PALIN person. I think that she was a blast of fresh air from the parts of this nation still at some level of true liberty. She has talent, charisma, charm (not the same thing in my book) and she had incredible instincts for winning.

That made her a target, and in doing so also doomed her because the armor and ammunition that she needed to continue all came from sources on her side who despised the ground she walked on.

One thing that I will agree with is that no matter how bad “The One” is, or how far he drags us further in to the abyss… he and his will not be defeated until the GOP and Conservatives quit trying to do away with each other. The GOP needs to realize that there is no “moderate middle” to chase, they either win on and with the right, or they resign themselves to losing forever.

The Conservatives need to realize that they are not the “base” of the GOP, they are a powerful faction, but lack the cohesion and agreement amongst themselves to be more than that. They also need to realize that if they don’t shake hands with the GOP and bury the hatchet, that they too are doomed to roam the wilderness; out of power and out of luck.

Back to point one for the conclusion of this tome. The misquote of MacArthur is an unfortunate comment on the situation. I will provide a more appropriate one. “Old soldiers never die they just fade away.”

Good bye Mrs. Palin, you were a bright hope, but now we must move on as you have. Good luck and peace.

No way Sarah Palin becomes the voice of the Republican Party or POTUS. Why would anyone support a “quitter”???? As the adage goes, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen – and she did.

I think she is a strong woman, but lacks the character, credibility, experience and authority to convince Americans. Her walking out on the Governorship of Alaska, only adds to her confused biography.

I would not vote for her nor would I support the GOP if she is the candidate in 2012; I do sympathize with her for the trashing of her family and career by the MSM and John McCain’s campaign managers. That said, recent events do not qualify her for higher office. She is a bit deranged if she believes “quitting” on the state level will allow her to achieve national prominence.

I hope that she can find peace and satisfaction in the arms of her family. I also hope she stays in Alaska.

Why does everyone talk about what she has to learn, are you kidding me. Obama doesn’t even stand for freedom! I want someone that stands for liberty, free markets, small businesses, big businesses, individuality, and most of all our troops! We need to get behind the most conservative person for the job. All the social stuff is for the states to decide period. The left is going to be brutal and we need to fight a firm/sane battle. I’m for Sarah all the way if she wants it.

Jul 5, 2009 - 9:12 am 32. David Thomson:

“Why would anyone support a “quitter”????

It all depends on the financial burden placed on Sarah Palin’s shoulders. She apparently was forced to quit. Alaska’s ethics laws are downright weird. They allow constant harassment with no end in sight. If one embraces your point of view—than only someone very wealthy can be a Republican governor of Alaska. No sane person should expect Palin to go nearly bankrupt to prove that she is not a quitter.

Palin succumbed to the Lefts’ merciless attacks, as a result the left has won a battle in the larger war. It is now proven that Cloward-Piven strategies can be successful in destroying a political enemy. The left will be further emboldened by this success. Mainstream political discourse in this country is dead.

Much as we love her, Palin was never presidential material. Is she able to stand up to Putin and the others in a growing list of adversaries? Or is she the hockey mom who will bail when things get tough. The press already has the answer; the 3AM phone call ads are already being written. Many conservatives rightly raised concerns about her experience, though infinitely more than Obama’s. These concerns are now magnified.

No, Palin can never run for president or vice president. I imagine many Republicans are breathing a sign of relief. But being out of the running gives her a freedom to say the things that need to be said. And as a magnet for the MSM maybe she can actually boldly proclaim the conservative message, and tell it like it is, while most of the Republicans in office remain largely silent. There is a great deal of freedom in not running for office. The same freedom Limbaugh has, or Gingrich. Lets hope she puts it to good use.

Good assessment marred by the inappropriate attribution of the misquoted statement by Marine General Oliver Smith during the Chosen campaign in the winter of 1950. At that time Smith told journalists that the Marines were not retreating from Chosen but, “advancing in another direction.” Sorry to be so nitpicking but it rubs this historian raw to see the monumental ego the “Old Soldier” that did not fade away but died (at least politically) receive credit he does not deserve.

“A number of conservative commenters fail to realize the importance of Sarah’s financial troubles. They live in the New York-Washington, DC corridor and raising $500,000 is not really a big deal to them. It’s a modest challenge and nothing more than that. We should not forget that Palin lives in the boondocks of Alaska.”

..as you have commented on in several of the Palin-is-quitting posts. But it diminishes your point not in the slightest. Were many of us faced with half a mil of legal debt and saw the opportunity to eliminate it with a book deal and speaking tour at the zenith of our popularity, we would avail ourselves of that opportunity as quickly.

It is probably the fact that she, Todd, and their family are so much like the rest of us (except for the puerile adolescent sheesh) that we are sympathetic to her.

I believe that the decision to quit is a lot more simple than it is made out to be. It was a great opportunity to leave Alaska in good hands (the Lieutenant Governor is said to be uncommonly competent and conservative), solve her financial woes, shield her family from the harsh and cruel sniping, and get herself into a position where she could answer her critics.

I salivate at the prospect of her conducting speaking and fund raising tours across the lower 48 with — with the gloves off, as it were.

“Were many of us faced with half a mil of legal debt and saw the opportunity to eliminate it with a book deal and speaking tour at the zenith of our popularity, we would avail ourselves of that opportunity as quickly.”

You are missing the point. Alaska’s ethic laws are insane. There is no way to put a stop to these frivolous hand grenades thrown into the middle of the room. The legal bills were going to continue climbing upwards. Sarah Palin literally cannot leave the state to give a speech without enduring another ethics charge! That’s how crazy it is. It is being reported that most of her time is spent fooling with this nonsense. The voters of Alaska have got to rid of these initially well intentioned laws as quickly as possible.

Jul 5, 2009 - 11:06 am 44. idov:

Even though she went back to Alaska, she remains a major story in the lower 48, most of it negative stuff from everyone from Letterman to Vanity Fair. She really only had two choices, move over to the big arena and defend herself or leave public life. We don’t know which one she has chosen. But to remain there as a sitting duck devoting her attentions to Alaska while her name is being defamed, and that of her children, from coast to coast was the worst of all possible choices.

Jul 5, 2009 - 11:10 am 45. David Thomson:

Many people seem to be confusing their own state with that of Alaska. Stop doing that. I live in Texas and it is impossible to file frivolous ethics charges against Governor Rick Perry. One would not even get to first base with such nonsense. Alaska’s well intentioned legislators have literally set up a nightmare where unbelievable amounts of time and money have to be spent answering ridiculous charges that don’t even pass the laugh test.

The normal process of getting a politician investigated for ethics violations normally requires that one first seeks out a number of media outlets. They will demand that you provide evidence to support your allegations. The next step is that a number of legislators will likely start an investigation. It is only then that the accused politician will have to spend serious time and money. But that’s the case in Alaska. Literally, a couple of idiots can just make stuff up—and all hell breaks lose. There are no mediating institutions to check and balance abusive behavior.

Palin is majority of Americans values…wow, no wonder we’re in trouble, are we in trouble as a nation? No, not if being a liar and being ignorant is acceptable. Ignorance is the playground of liars.

But Palin is not the point. Soft facism in America is. Facism is defined as a country ruled by those in power. It’s called “soft” facism because those who rule are not those in government but corporate America such as the insurance companies, pharmaceutical, American Medical Association…This country is run by corporate America whose funding of politicians who will do their bidding.

So the subject of Palin is a moot point…although she’s an opportunist like a lot of Americans, including me. Wouldn’t I take advantage of public visibility if I’d rake in more money than the average American makes?

I have read Maureen Dowd’s column today and many of the nearly 900 comments that followed. Also read some of the material here on Pajamas Media, including Roger Simon’s account of his depression over the nation’s polarization.
Here are a few thoughts: social policy is difficult, and requires much study and debate by persons who have spent their adult lives dealing with the outcomes of this or that policy. Absolutist thinkers, whether of the Left or Right or Center, rely on simple slogans and schemes to inform their opinions. But full of righteous, childish indignation against their supposed bosom enemies, they let loose with vitriol, not analysis. Hence the national polarization that Roger Simon rightly deplores and fears.
Who here has read Hayek’s The Constitution of Liberty (1960)? Was he a statist or an anti-statist? The answer is “both,” just like Milton Friedman. Read the book: it doesn’t throw stones, and should be in everyone’s library. Meanwhile, calm down, take a big breath, and stop the hating and the ad hominems.
I agree that Obama is more than worrisome, but his admirers will not be persuaded by slings and arrows. Dissect the policies you fear and then explain why they are destructive, and why they get support from certain constituencies. Have you the much vaunted work ethic? Then get to work!

Reality check.

Palin’s options:

1) Stay as governor, calculatedly and at great personal expense tied up by the Alinsky party and unable to give full time to what she’s being paid for, when there is a capable surrogate ready to step in.

2) Be active in the GOP, which is stumbling aimlessly and inchoately around, whose internal beauracracy openly hates her, and whose bold Fighter Pilot bailed out rather than attack the target, totally wasting the energy she generated in his campaign.

3) Start an independent, third party, bid for the White House, getting in early, with the certainty of being savaged by both Leftists and Rightists.

4) Picking up from where she left off last fall, with middle Americans, the Tea Party folk, the Exceptionalists, the gut-reacting anti-Socialists representing at least 40% of the electorate, eating out of her hand. Gathering huge, paying, audiences, excorciating the cheating Chicago Alinsky mob, reviling the Grea Kiss-Ass, writing top-selling books, guesting on Limbaugh, Hannity, and Fox news, NRO, Micele Malkin, demonstrating her barbed wit, her devastating debating skills, driving Axelrod and his cabal into a frenzy of frustration, gathering a cadre of conservative power brokers and money source, and getting rich like Mark Steyn and Al Gore.

And being able to postpone the decision and whether she really wants to get back into the dirty business of “high level” national politics. She can call it. If she does, it will be on her terms, not the RNC’s.

So who’s the realist?

Of course, in 1932, Hoover screwed up so badly that we never really got back in power. We had the presidency a lot, but never had the kind of majorities the Democrats have frequently had in Congress, combined with the presidency and a friendly Supreme Court.

Wow, this is like the literal version of a game of Three Card Monte. Perhaps you should look up the word traitor yourself.
Advocating disloyalty and the breaking up of land within a nation is one of the highest forms of treachary. Be it through arms or any other form. The southerns were traitors in the Civil War, and state-based independence movement supporters today are traitors. They can care less about the Constitution. That’s nothing more but populist window dressing. If living up to its standards was the goal, then there are a thousand and one more constructive ways to address it.
This is more about socially isolated individuals who feel they know how to better ‘rule’ over people than the elected government.

“Conservatives who want to turn the country around will not do so in 2010, no matter how many seats they pick up.”

Well, that is wrong. Makes me wonder about the rest of it. Enough so I didn’t bother reading it. One can not build a logical argument on a faulty premise.

The Usurper is NOT a ‘natural born’ citizen. So far there is no proof of that statement. What there is is an overwhelming body of circumstantial evidence. Starting with “If he was a natural born American citizen why did he photoshop his birth certificate that was posted on the internet?” nad going on to Why did he spend 600,000 $US of HIS money in legal fees fighting a court order to produce his birth certificate? There are MANY stops between those two points.
Enough smoke to support several forest fires. The Usurper could stop it all with one simple little bit ‘ paper, allowing access to his Birth certificate. Unless there isn’t a birth certioficate. In which case he has a problem.
You have to meet 3 requirements to be POTU. NOT 2 out of 3, but all 3.
The Usurper is eminently impeachable. Once impeached, he will have to produce a birth certificate that will pass a forensic document examination. If he doesn’t, he will be convicted. Then he will leave office. In cuffs if necessary. About May of 2011. Biden will take over and if he plays his cards right, he will be elected in 2012.
The Dems won’t allow that, they will turn to Hillery, most likely.

Middleman, you are foolish to say secessionist impulses are necessarily treason. If an amendment is peaceably sought to make it legal, either generally as a commonly available procedure or more specifically aimed at a given area by referendum or amendment of cession, that can not be treason–under the current Constitution. What the American south did was treason to the Consitution, the nation, and the Revolution because they didn’t bother to get an amendment to make it “okay”.

Mike Huckabee is a big-government nanny-stater and actual bible-thumper to boot.

The only worse candidate the GOP could put up in 2012 is the one they did put for POTUS in 2008.

Romney had then and still now has too much snake oil dripping off of him.

I really think the ball is in the GOP’s court and not only Palin’s. With Obama now fumbling at every turn and with Colin Powell now feeling queasy enough to question Obama’s decisions, it’s ours for the taking. The question remains as to if we can get behind one candidate this early in the game or not. I say we should wait a while. Why rush things? Let Obama continue to ratchet up the deficit and let the unemployment rates rise to 10%. Then the undecided who unfortunately decided “Obama” at the last minute will realize the folly of their ways. I see it happening around me daily.

That’s a huge dose of reality I can live with. Better days await us friends.

Tom,
Secessionist impulses may not be necessarily outright treasonist, but they generally are based on self-righteous impluses from the leadership of said group. Case in point is the Republic of Texas, who used the tactic of filing liens against the property owned by their critics and even using some strong-armed tactics.
Not very democratic or Constitutional based me thinks.

the gov of kansas and az resigned half way through, i don’t care what they did, they resigned….obama was a do nothing jr senator , and was not around most of the time as he ran for senator, but he did draw a paycheck.

so, Palin, you go girl…Moral ethical people are with you!!

Romney is without a doubt the cleanest candidate out there, left or right.

I hope there will be a “third” party that emerges. A good solid for the people party. The Self righteous , do as i say not as i do people. QUIT ELECTING THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope Sarah ends up a multimillionaire!!

Now you have Franken on two REALLY important committees…b.s. all the way around..a comedian, he and BO should hit it off really good. Franken is the latest “yes massa” man on the job…

I echo your sentiment on Obama.
He was a nothing Senator.
Gov. Palin did not have the luxury of simply being “Present” the majority of the time.
Obama accomplished very little since graduating from Columbia/Harvard.
Gov. Palin on the other hand has accomplished a great deal since graduating from the University of Idaho.
Funny to compare the earlier life of the two and how they turned out is it not.
Obama had all the best schooling he could handle, Exclusive private school in Hawaii followed up by the lofty Ivy League Schools.
All the best our great country had to offer. Obviously it was not good enough for him or his spouse.
Nope , his spouse, an ivy leaguer as well, was never even proud of her country until her husband was elected President. I guess we all still owe the Obama’s more.
The Obama’s are so pathetic….

The Palin family on the other hand is probably down the ladder a couple of rungs on the social scale from the Obama’s. After all they did not have the benefit’s of Mrs. O’s 300k+ mystery job that just vanished after her departure from Chicago. Or the benefits of Tony Rezko’s wheeling & dealing on behalf of the Obama family. (Rezko is now a convicted criminal 16 of 24 counts of corruption)
I would have to say though the Palin attitude is much more along the lines of a Famous Democrat who once said,
“Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

As far as Senator Frankin goes, well I have to say I am no fan of his but,
we actually have no idea what kind of Senator he will make so lets just see what he is really made of.
Maybe he will take his position serious enough to actually do a good job.(well we can hope can’t we, you know hope & change..)

I expect to see Palin run for the senate first, then maybe the top ticket later.
In fact, that may be the best possible outcome.
Alaskans still like her very much, and the crap the DNC and the tool MSM has been pulling against her has pissed off a lot of them.

“If you noticed. everyone that says the love Palin is a (republican). Now, before you say duh. Think about it this way. Most of america is conservative. Alot of democrats are conservative. I’m a democrat. The republican party has to ask itself, how do I appeal to conservative liberals,”

You think like a democrat, even if you say you’re a conservative liberal – whatever that is. The problem with the Republican Party is that it has turned its back on conservative values. Until the party can get its act together, it’s not going any place.

Out here in rural America, where conservatism rules, we won’t settle for Republican lite again. If the same RINOs, who are now running the party, continue as they are, the republicans will never win another meaningful election. It will be in dibs and dabs and forget about another Republican President, unless he runs as a Democrat because he’ll have to win it with the liberal vote. He won’t get the conservative vote. McCain made sure of that.

Just spent an hour on the Alaska state web site downloading news articles about Palin’s ethics challenges. In each one, some one mentions the cost of money and time stolen from the citizens of Alaska and the personal cost to Palin. She is not as rich as other governors. She gave up her raise this year. The challenges are just plain ridiculous. She – and the state of Alaska – are being harasses by Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals #4: make someone walk their talk. Palin has made her name from the ethics reforms she brought forth in the state so she is being harassed with phony ethics violations. Once filed, they are supposed to be private until resolved. The bloggers who file them – paid for by DNC – then make them public contrary to the law. I can see the concern of Palin and those who have to deal with the charges – 15 silly ones so far – with more on the horizon. If only the State could sue those bloggers who file them but they can’t. Ironically, Palin runs a transparent government. Unlike someone we know.

If Palin runs for president or not, I think the United States is in huge trouble. I haven’t been this worried about the nation since Bill Clinton won election the first time with Democrat majorities. The only thing that saved this nation’s hide was 1994 when Republicans (mostly conservative) took over both houses. That stopped liberal communism from taking over for at least a baker dozen years.

The question is if 2010 will be a repeat of 1994 or not. If it is not then I fear this once great nation will have gone the way of the dodo, and the Constitution will be worth as much as a piece of toilet paper. Another prediction; if Republicans don’t take over in 2010 or at least gain significant numbers then Obama Messiah will not loose in 2012 without a real miracle. If his screwing up this nation by this point hasn’t caused voter’s to re-examine who to put in office, it isn’t going to be a factor in the next Presidential election.

Yeah. Right. She’d be the Michele Bachmann of the Senate if elected. Let’s face it. She’s a quitter. Thank God McCain didn’t win and die.
