7 Words You Can’t Say in Campaign 2008

Holy #$%@! Do you mean we can't say *$@#! when talking about Obama's record or %&#$! if we want to discuss attacks on McCain?

So here’s my common ground with the late George Carlin: Besides heartily affirming his treatise on “stuff,” I think the Federal Communications Commission is pretty useless. Or at least utterly humorous, given the June 2007 press release in which FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, bemoaning a 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that sided with Cher and Nicole Richie’s on-air verbal malfunctions, dropped the F-bomb four times and the S-bomb three times.

In fact, Carlin even got a cameo in Martin’s rant: “In the 1978 Pacifica case, the Supreme Court affirmed the Commission’s finding that the broadcast of comedian George Carlin’s monologue about the ’seven dirty words you can’t say on TV and radio’ was indecent,” Martin wrote in one of the non-swearing paragraphs. “In the case before the court today, the Commission was restricting only the use of two of those seven words.”

Like Carlin, I’ve wondered who decided that, out of all the words in the English language, these are the chosen dirty few. I’ve wondered why using technical language to describe dirty acts is permitted but the shorthanded jargon is markedly more offensive. I’ve wondered why, if these words are so destructive, they’re in the dictionary, which comes with no R-rating or parental warning (don’t get any ideas, Martin). I’ve wondered if the superior nature of HBO and Showtime series has anything to do with their freedom to curse. I think too much, dammit.

But like those seven dirty words you can’t say on TV — including the FCC chairman’s top picks — the culture of political correctness is swallowing more and more of our “acceptable” lexicon. Especially in this oh-so-sensitive campaign season, consider the “Seven Dirty Words You Can’t Say in Campaign 2008″: Pundits and voters alike, beware the rap of the Politically Correct Commission!

  • Swift boat: If you split the compound term, the words are completely innocuous. Swift is always good, especially in L.A. traffic. Boat brings about pleasant thoughts of sailing along the ocean blue. Until Somali pirates come aboard, of course. Swift boats are good, because they get you to your destination on time. But Swift boat ought not to be uttered in conjunction with Campaign 2008. People start to twitch. John Kerry turns shades of scarlet. Liberals sing of dirty tactics and stolen election. And now, it doesn’t even have to do with a boat. Bring up dirt from the past? Aw, man, you Swift boated me! Who cares if you never even served on one?

Every slam against Obama always starts out with some caveat that the critic isn’t supposed to say that about him or some mysterious PC force will do something unknowable to them. Then they proceed to slam him on all counts as if they are being both heroic and original.

Javelin,

How do you propose that we should criticize Obama? If you were in our shoes, how would you go about it?

Jun 29, 2008 - 1:10 pm 5. Elizabeth:

Javelin, I utterly agree. I mean, really–so many brave, patriotic progressive pundits have spent time in Bush gulags in the past 7 years for daring to speak out against his evil regime; my poor bleeding heart goes out to their worried and bereaved families.

“8 Simple Rules for Running Against Our Chosen One”!!! I think maybe we’ll stop pointing out the flip flops, the inconsistencies, the scandals, the double standards, the serious lack of experience, the serious lack of understanding of public and foreign policy, the obfuscations and outright lies, the quick appearance of the race card, the long, long list of Tammany-like, unsavory associates who WILL return after the election, mark my words, (other than Rev Wright; I think that bridge is burnt), and so on and so forth when Obama stops claiming we’re racist or that the opposition is racist just because we point out quite legitimate problems, among other pathetic things he states in response to our honest beefs. “Oooo, they’re going to make me seem scary, those racists” isn’t exactly the response I was looking for from anyone running for president of anything above 6th grade. But apparently, for the left, those kinds of comments are actually considered heroic and original. Classy.

Disaster is just around the corner. If elected, a one term president.

Jsut don’t vote for him. You’re going to criticize him anyways. So what is the point about acting like you are being some brave dissident when you are just rehashing the same old stuff? I guess you don’t seem to realize when you attack people, they and their surrogatges will respond, occassionally with ad hominem attacks and baseless charges.

I think it is so ironic that uneducated people put Obama down for the things he says, like that flap over saying 57 states and the clinging to guns and religion thing, while, at the same time, Obama and the beautiful Michelle are two of the most intelligent, upper class and visionary people in the entire world.

I agree when people say that it is beneath the Senator to have to deal with low-life Republican newspeople who aren’t fit to shine his shoes.

Mark my words, when B.O is elected, changes will be made. The evil Bush tax cuts will be allowed to end, they’ll again be capital gains taxes on home sales and the Fairness Doctrine will be passed. Not to mention, two very liberal, honest and trustworthy supreme court justices will be appointed which will assure women’s rights to have abortions.

Obama is my main man. The kind of President he’s going to make you won’t believe.

I think a main issue is that, just about daily, there’s brand-new stuff to rehash. We’ve been listening to the other shoe drop each week for months now to the point where we’re all gun-shy and twitchy wondering what the next anti-American, anti-white, pro-terrorist, pro-bribe, Marxist/socialist/Islamist shoe to drop will be.

Jun 29, 2008 - 5:29 pm 14. Waller:

Javelin,

I’m not sure I understand what you are getting at. You talk as if this stuff doesn’t happen. The media has already backed up the Obama camp in that there will be issues that Republicans can’t question BHO on. Of course the Obama campaign can bring these issues up in the context that the GOP will use them for swift boat tactics.

My personal list would include:
1. Race Politics
2. Muslim Stepfather/Stepsister
3. Michelle Obama
4. Marxist philosophy
5. Appeasement policies
6. Socialist record
7. No Platform (except change)

Rachel—how many years do you estimate it will take to get the country out of the deep recession that bho’s avowed policies will cause?

Jun 29, 2008 - 6:00 pm 17. Rachel:

Warning: That is NOT me
I am not *that* completely out to lunch like Ms. Peepers. Even if I liked Obama, flowery speeches like that make me look twice.

It’s ironic that after that and the other gaffes he and his wife have made that you’d think that they’re so intelligent. At least as politicians, there are many who know better.

“Visionary”? So beyond “hope” and “change”, exactly what are the details of their vision? Obama’s tacking swiftly to the center now that he has the nomination and not all of his acolytes are happy about it.

And “most…upper class”? Obviously not true. But if it were, is that really a recommendation for a President who would do the most for the people?

As Orwell wrote, “[the intelligentsia secretly] wish to destroy the old, equalitarian version of Socialism and usher in a hierarchical society where the intellectual can at last get his hands on the whip.”

javelin,

That was a dishonest answer to a fair question. The hostility of your response indicates bad faith. You raised the issue about the fairness of criticizing your candidate. So, I threw it in your lap to define what would be fair terms and conditions by which YOU would critique a candidate. And in failing to respect my question, you launched into a snarky, denigrative, albeit brief, diatribe. You essentially said it’s all the law of the jungle and that you, as an Obama partisan, would at least measure out what you perceive has been lobbed from out side.

You have exposed yourself for the intrusive, obstreperous lout you are. You are not here to contribute positively to this discussion, but only to subvert it.

Jun 29, 2008 - 6:39 pm 22. David:

Rachel,

Yes, I can believe what kind of President Obama can and will be. I look no further than the Carter administration, which I lived through, to know that Obama’s “change” is more social statism which will destroy both our economy and our individualism. If elected, I will oppose. The revolt begins on the day he assumes office.

Jun 29, 2008 - 6:42 pm 23. RIch Rostrom:

“Swift-boat” prohibited?

It’s the generic Democrat description of criticism. They and their buddies have repeated their lies about the Swift Boat Veterans so often that like Dr. Goebbels, they have sold the public a “big lie” by mere bald-faced repetition.

Jun 29, 2008 - 7:20 pm 24. jman:

You’re right Rachel,

I really can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not. But assuming you’re not (because other people will be nodding their heads in agreement) here goes:

Those newpeople really are Republicans, despite what several media surveys have said in the past

Tax cuts ARE evil- because the government is really a better steward of the money we earn than we are– and whats more, they can create many more public service jobs with our money than any businessman (not!). Oh if only people had just a smidgen of understanding regarding economics.

And really, shouldn’t we have the Fairness Doctrine so people will be muzzled for expressing their very ignorant beliefs? Who really needs the First Amendment anyway– thats really some patriarchal nonsense.

And finally, yes we should nominate supreme court justices on their political stands (abortion) rather than understanding of law. Its all really whats politically expedient.

Jun 29, 2008 - 7:37 pm 25. Bridget:

Actually, Brendon, “rap” is correct, as in a sharp reprimand or rebuke.

Jun 29, 2008 - 8:19 pm 26. mjk:

I like:
1. Not knowing who is in charge of Gaza.
2. Unconditional negotiation with Iran.
3. Withdrawal of troops from a war the U.S. is actually winning.
4. The decrease in terror attacks with no acknowledgement that perhaps hitting the people who financed the terrorists is working to decrease the attacks. Yeah, Saddam Hussein was a terrorist financier – shocker, I know.
5. Universal HealthCare just like in Canada and promising to decrease taxes except taxes are what finances Canadian HealthCare.
6. Refusal to open up more oil drilling. Instead just more “we need more energy sources” without actually doing something about it.

Does that help??

In other words, if you point out that Obama’s tax plan will cripple the economy, you should EXPECT to be called a racist.

Jun 30, 2008 - 5:03 am 31. Alberto Gonzalez:

Who ever said Obama is like Jimmy Carter is absolutely wrong. Obama is worst, he is a fraud wrapped in deceit and if elected, something I seriously doubt, will make many Democrats wish the U.S. Constitution allowed George Bush to run for a third term. Obama is very dangerous to the US and to the world. Take it from a Cuban who lived in the communist paradise under Fidel Castro.

Jun 30, 2008 - 5:12 am 32. John the Bitter:

I am afraid that all those who have legitimate concerns about Senator Obama will be painted as racists. You see this clearly everyday.

He personally does not seem to handle criticism very well and that is a very poor attribute for a leader. I have known many excellent leaders and they are always out front.

To be out front means to be criticized. You must separate the criticism from the critic. Review the criticism to see if there is something that can be gained by understanding it or reviewing it for validity. Do not put your energy in focusing on the critic.

This is not something that Senator Obama, his campaign, or his supporters do well. They take the path of least resistance, which mostly seems to be shouting; RACIST!

Jun 30, 2008 - 6:28 am 33. Boris:

Meh. Criticize Obama all you want, just don’t make up crap like the Swift Boat Vets didagainst Kerry. You know, stuff like Obama was raised a Muslim and his brother said so and he has a cousin who’s a dictator in Africa.

If Obama is so bad then you shouldn’t have to lie about him.

Jun 30, 2008 - 6:31 am 34. John:

I think poor Rachel Peepers is wishing there were some type of emoticons in use here, especially one for being sarcastic. At least she made me laugh.

@ javelin:
It may piss you off that folks on this side of the political fence continue to keep Obama’s gaffs and shortcomings at the top of the page, however, we realize that most of the American people have very short memories, and it’s still a long time ’til November. Some of us think it’s vitally important not to let people forget what a shallow, empty suit BHO really is. September and October should be very interesting months for political TV ads. Meanwhile, we just want to keep those fires banked for future use.

Slightly off topic, but I think related. Personally, I think images of the World Trade Towers coming down should be regular sights on all TV stations around the country all the time, weekly, monthly, if not daily, lest we Americans forget what kind of people we are at war with. I also think children should be taught that Arab = Terrorist, and “Muslim” is a dirty word. I think that Americans need to have a clear understanding that Islam is not the “Religion of Peace”, that the Muslim faith preaches that there will be peace only after all the infidels (that’s you and me), are converted or beheaded. According to their way of thinking there’s very little wiggle room for anyone who doesn’t march in lockstep to the way of Islam. So… Unless you will be content to get on your knees five times a day and pray towards Mecca, you are always going to be a target for these monsters.

These are the people Obama wants to sit down and talk to, without pre-conditions. This is, I think, the scariest part.

@ boris;

I foresaw that comment. I hope you were using the word “bigotry” in the nicest possible way.

I also think dropping the A-bombs Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a good idea. Does anyone doubt turning Mecca into a glass parking lot would not have a similar effect? Just think,,, if we had done it right the first time, we’d still be buying gas at the pump for 75 cents per gallon.

Jun 30, 2008 - 9:01 am 39. Boris:

Well, clearly killing millions of people for cheap gas is fine. I thought you were advocating it out of hate. My mistake.

Jun 30, 2008 - 11:00 am 40. John:

“I thought you were advocating it out of hate. My mistake.”

Clearly you don’t read or hear much these days. Of course it’s advocated out of hatred. What, pray tell, motivated the 9-11 attackers, if not hate? I hate what the Islamic followers did to our country that day. Why should it be OK for them to hate us but not OK for us to hate them? Are you leftoids that retarded? Hate can be a good thing properly directed, it might just be the salvation of our way of life.

Hating one’s enemies should not be confused with bigotry.

Jun 30, 2008 - 11:48 am 41. David Thomson:

“Mark my words, when B.O is elected, changes will be made. The evil Bush tax cuts will be allowed to end, they’ll again be capital gains taxes on home sales and the Fairness Doctrine will be passed.”

I want all conservatives to carefully read the above words. This is the way many, if not even most supporters of Barack “Barry” Obama think of the issues. John McCain may leave something to be desired—and he was most certainly not my first choice. Nonetheless, he is by far the lesser of evils. Your often justified irritation towards Senator McCain should take a distant second place to your horror contemplating Obama in the the White House.

Jun 30, 2008 - 12:37 pm 42. E.D.Davis:

Unless Mr. Obama has been reborn all his words and he is the one that empasized that words mean something. They need to be rehashed over and over again lest we forget where he really comes from.

I am so tired of hearing we are fighting a war for oil.
Some please tell me if I am wrong but when we went and fought the Iraqi’s and saved some Kuwaiti’s, we did not get even paid back for the cost of our fight for them. We did not get free oil or cheap oil or any rights to get oil before anyone else. We did not get crap out of the deal except to know we went over and fought for some people that could not defend themselves and try to stabilize a country. Now those people don’t even support us in voting with us in a majority of UN votes. The Kuwaiti’s don’t appreciate what we did enough to support us through Votes and they damn sure have not given us oil or even paid for our expenses to defend them.
We are so stupid we would do it all again knowing we were not getting anything in return but that is what AMERICA DOES. WE FIGHT THE FIGHT FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T OR SOMETIMES EVEN WON’T. WE ARE A GOOD PEOPLE TRYING TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND MAKE MANY MISTAKES ALONG THE WAY.

Jun 30, 2008 - 6:07 pm 48. fred:

The “Fairness” Doctrine is an assault on free speech, because it’s a phony standard. There are no conservative viewpoints allowed in any of the mainstream media – not print, not radio shows (NPR), and not television shows (except FOX).

There are no barriers to entry into radio for liberal/Left shows. If they put up the money, they can find an outlet. But because there is very little market for their tripe, they are economically a millstone around the station’s and network’s necks.

They can’t compete with Limbaugh, Hannity, and Savage because they s**k at what they try to do. Al Franken and Air America failed because not many people were interested in the show. That means not enough advertising dollars. The show failed and that’s that.

I’m a former Leftist (from many years ago)and I can tell you that these people will do anything they can to ostracize you, shout you down, and shut you down. Under the veneer of their humanitarian concerns they are totalitarians who simply do not tolerate dissent. If they can’t compete with it, they will spare no effort to stuff it down. That’s who they are.

And because they don’t like criticism of their policy prescriptions, they will not tolerate any criticism of Obama. They will brand it as “racist” or some other epithet, in order to smear it and blunt its effects. Sometimes they will succeed and sometimes they will fail, but what matters most to them is that sometimes they do not succeed in stifling dissent and criticism.

There are a lot of sound reasons why I left the Left. Do not trust these people. They have no scruples and are completely given over to expediency.

Do I think he will be elected? God I hope so, but there seems to be alot more noise coming from the neighbors’.

What Elizabeth said :)

I’m glad she (likely not a Reverend nor a Swift Boat-er who opted for the assignment in the Mekong as it was (originally) considered “safe”) voted present to share her experience of Barack Hussein Obama in this here venue, and I’m glad her financing choices allowed her that option and, also, that she hasn’t succumbed to the vapidity of the “change” rant and she might even have a little change left over after “he who would use the power of the federal government to redistribute wealth in direct contradiction to the power of taxation as promulgated in the US Constitution” fleeces her.

Jul 1, 2008 - 8:42 am 51. tanstaafl:

Fred is absolutely correct about The Fairness Doctrine.

It is, in fact, an anti-fairness doctrine, whose resurrection many Democrats favor for the exact reasons Fred outlines, an inability to effectively compete in the marketplace of ideas.

Nancy Pelosi is a big proponent of re-instituting The Fairness Doctrine and requiring “…broadcast licensees to present controversial issues of public importance in a manner deemed by the FCC to be honest, equitable, and balanced.”

Who would define “honest, equitable and balanced” ? Some yahoo or yahoos at the FCC, for your listening pleasure. Every totalitarian regime in history has used such kinds of control devices to monitor what could, or could not, reach your ears.

It’s typical current Democrat think (it wasn’t always like this) to want to try to micromanage your life that way.

Barry O is heavily into some version of “Fairness”. You’ll notice if you listen closely, it’s a theme pervading his every position. Who defines “fairness” ? Barry, of course. Oftimes, he shifts his position. For example, in April, he declared the DC gun ban “constitutional”. In June, following the Supreme Court decision, he confirmed an “individual right” of the Second Amendment to bear arms.

Truthfully, your freedoms are surreptitiously (even overtly) under assault. Perhaps an even more worrisome assault than the crowd who would still like to find a way to ram some more airplanes into our buildings.

I figure it this way… I’m being accused of being a racist because I want to have a meaningful “interview” with each of the candidates for this job, not just the conservative candidate. So if I’m already wearing some leftist’s label, why the devil should I care about political correctness anyway?

Let’s call a spade a spade (no, I mean no reference to race with that comment… nice try though). We need to stop the flow of illegal immigration. No, not just from Mexico. We need to stop giving away the benefits of our citizens to those who are not willing to go through the process of becoming a legal citizen. Period.

We need to call every single person on using race as an issue and draw a clear distinction between the discussion of cultural tendencies and racial bias. We need to clarify the “U.S. Culture” – maybe write a U.S. Philiosphy and U.S. Mission Statement. Oh wait, that’s done — Declaration of Independence and The U.S. Consititution. Okay scratch those off the to-do list.

We need to elect somebody who will use his or her experience and the blind eye of justice to do what is right, not what one person or another person thinks is “fair” — what is right for America. That doesn’t include instituting a socialist government. That doesn’t include trying to mess with the fragile balance of the economy to make “rich people” create a comfortable existence for “poor people”.

We became a strong nation because we didn’t have anybody to make life easy for us. We must get over this “it isn’t fair” mentality… this “I am entitled because I am poor” mentality. Welfare and Medicaid and Food Stamps and other programs are good for our nation when used as intended and not adopted as a lifestyle.

Can anybody doubt that there is work aplenty to be done? Does anybody really believe that there are jobs “Americans won’t do”? I don’t. Americans… those who embrace the culture of America… are hard workers. They innovate. If they lose their job, they find a way to contract out until they get a new job. They start businesses. They find alternatives and make discoveries. They go back to school to get a raise and get ahead.

All of that takes “rich people” who run big corporations that hire people to innovate, discover new things and find alternatives. Those “rich people” can afford to put those innovations into practice and hire more people. Tax them — they will not bleed. They will not bear the burden of those taxes. The poor will.

Come ON people — we are the interviewers, and the job we are considering these candidates to fill is nothing less than the highest in the land. Think like you own a multi-billion dollar corporation. Think of it as if it’s YOUR business that could be run into the dirt in as little as 4 years.

Now… read up on how to interview and hire an upper level manager and you’ll have a good start on what to ask these candidates.

I can’t believe the mean spirited comments made about my deep felt beliefs. On a happier note, though, what made my heart skip a beat this morning was when I read what the highly intelligent and unparalled master of the issues, the good Senator Obama, said yesterday about a world ban on nuclear arms. When Senator Obama destroys the last U.S ICBM, the world will be a safer place. Initially, of course, he’ll sit down with terrorists of all ilk, speak to them with his gossamer tones and persuasive logic and get their John Hancock on a world contract promising not only to rid the world of nuclear weapons, but, more importantly, never to launch them in anger, even when confronted by hostile actions of the United States.

Then, Obama will speak to all of the world’s countries and do the same. All for a world in which our children can live without the threat of a nuclear holocaust. Dovetailing with this world initiative, of course, will be,(to prove our sincerity because BUSH’s USA is no longer trusted) the U.S. pledge to stop development of the nuclear shield, which unfortunatly is about to be considered operational after numerious successful tests. Change. It all comes down to seeing a world where fear of another U.S. invasion is eliminated. In previous years, the U.S. was cursed because, as Obama believes, we were the cause of most of the world’s problems. He, on the other hand, wants to live in a world where the U.S. once again is revered as a peace loving nation. Better still, without the impliments to make war on innocent people. When Obama talks about change,it’s of a kind that we can believe in. I ask you; Who can resist standing shoulder to shoulder with Obama as he builds a brave new world. With Obama at the helm, we will be given a country whose watchword is peace, whose intentions are friendly and whose goverment will go to most any extreme to make the world a safer place. Now. I tell you. Who among you doesn’t now feel a renewed belief in America. And that wonderful tingly feeling you feel is because for the first time the American people are being given change they can believe it. A new day is coming. We have survived Bush’s tunnel of dispair, and from the shores of West Hampton to the pristine beaches of San Diego, all we’ll see is light, the light at the end of the Bush tunnel. The day Obama is elected, our future will be so bright we’ll all need shades.
