The MSM has become a dinosaur cheerleader for the Democratic party. They are no longer journalists. The internet news sources will crush them even more now. If Obama gets behind "The Faiirness Doctrine" as a payback to the MSM, it will be a bloody battle. He will become a one termer and the Dems will get swept out of their majority in the mid terms. America will not stand by and watch this happen.

pete f. you hit the nail on the head. Giap knew if the U.S. got in the war, he would lose. And it was not a civil war, but a direct invasion of the South.Giap used a classic strategy of a smaller force outlasting a larger, better armed force, fight small battles and run away. This was used by Washington in our revolution. George knew ther was no way his "army" of 18 year old kids and 50 year old veterans of the French and Indian War were not going to beat the best army in the world in open battle. The war had to be won in London, not america. As giap said, "we didn't have to win, just still be here when they left." Tet was a masterful move, put all you have on the table for one roll of the dice. H e knew he would lose the roll, but it would sap American will to win. He lost about 45,000 men in Tet, almost our losses for the entire war, but it got us into peace talks and looking for a way out. The Jihadists of the present day have said they have studied Giap and know how to beat America. Leaving Iraq to fester would be letting the cancer of jihad grow. Remember, Al Zaqawi was a Jordanian looking to use Irag as a base to attack Jordan.

I'm perfectly fine with letting the NYT, MSM, ABC, CBS, fail and die a natural death. It's a cycle of life, others will replace them with better service to readers. The fact that they are dying is because readership does not support what their product delivers: untruthful twisting of the facts, and blatant omissions of the facts. I just hope they die quickly before the Fairness Doctrine comes to save them.

The MSM economic bankruptcy is following years of ethical bankruptcy. NYT and ABC stink and don't deserve the market-share they have now. It hurts your credibility, when you lavish praise on their shoddy reporting.

If you actually wanted _serious_ and _excellent_ coverage of Iraq, you would have been reading Michael Totten and not the third-rate MSM propaganda.

Carol - Even that model you predict is unsustainable. GE owns NBC, MSNBC, Time, and Newsweek. Maybe others. GE's credit rating has been downgraded. They are no longer a fortune 500 company. I understand print failure, as there are other factors. However, the TV operations are shedding viewership, especially the far-left MSNBC. Foxnews is beating them and CNN combined.

Actually, print failure shouldn't happen. These outfits have physical resources that blogsites do not. They have the opportunity to write things that others do not. They need a commitment to better jounalism, with new emphasis. No more, "If it bleeds, it leads."

Blogsites could have the same thing, though. If they affiliate with each other, and set up an easy donation system, they could have a virtual paper. People all over could donate whenever they see a great article. Instant feedback. If a story is so good that it goes viral, instant wealth. This could provide the physical tools to supplant the MSM.

Subscriptions would work well with this model, too. Various articles would automatically arrange on the site according to your established tastes. Occasionally, off-site material would also find its way to you, instead of you having to search. The subscriptions would be shared out based on subscriber votes for articles, even for unaffiliated articles. Pro and con articles could be solicited from bloggers by the virtual newspaper, providing balance.

The effect of all this would be to employ good writers. If their stuff doesn't sell, they will not get paid. Instant feedback, painfully administered. I could go on and on, because my mind is like that with ideas, so I had better stop, now.

What may happen in the US is what has happened in the UK.

For example, the Guardian newspaper has survived despite running on a multi million pound deficit for years, leeching profits from the other companies owned by the Guardian Media Group. Another? The BBC gets four billion pounds from the taxpayer from a yearly direct tax called the license fee which is brutally enforced with Orwellian tactics.

Bottom line - some US newspapers and broadcasters will become propaganda outlets with no need to make a profit or address audience outrage over their coverage. Shareholders who don't care about a junk rating will be the same as the complacent members of the Scott Trust.

Oh wait, did I say what MAY happen?

From Gloria

"The concensus of responses to this post indicate that the “Old” media are committing suicide. My own take is similar: why support non-objective, propagandistic, yellowsheet rags?"

Naw the body of the press has been dead for years. It's just that know the bloated head in the basket may finally clse it's blovating mouth while we all bid it a fond adieau.
