A Young Woman’s Education in Politics

How a leftist university helped forge a conservative leader.

A degree in civil engineering might not seem to be the most suitable preparation for a position as executive director of the Fulton County Republican Party, but if you attended the Georgia Institute of Technology recently and if you filed a federal lawsuit against the public university’s speech codes as Orit Sklar did, such a career choice would make sense.

Sklar, along with then-fellow student Ruth Malhotra, was the plaintiff in Sklar v. Clough. The slurs and death threats that she and Malhotra received prepared the 24-year-old for the rough-and-tumble world of politics. Although Sklar had come from Mount Vernon, New York, looking for the best engineering school, she gained what she calls a “life-changing experience” from a public university that in recent years has been branching away from its original charter as an institute of technology into politically correct areas. Turning down job offers in engineering in New York and Georgia, Sklar started her own consulting company, through which she serves as the party’s executive director for Fulton County, which encompasses most of the city of Atlanta and suburbs mainly to the south and north.

Sklar and Malhotra’s various activities, like the “affirmative action bake sale,” as students and members of the College Republicans, brought about harassment from students and professors. During Women’s History Month, when the pornographic Vagina Monologues — supported by the administration and student fees — celebrated women’s “empowerment,” the undergraduates’ booth displaying information about notable women like Phyllis Schlafly, Ann Coulter, and Michelle Malkin, along with direct quotations from the play, brought on the ire of administrators and calls to the dean’s and the president’s office, with pressure to cease their lawful activities.

They refused to take down the display but had to white-out words (like the “c” word). One African-American studies professor brought her class out to harass the young women. A physics professor during a class lecture called her and Malhotra the “evil ones.” They had swastikas imposed on their faces on computer images. (Malhotra is Christian and Sklar is Jewish.)

Represented by the Alliance Defense Fund’s Center for Academic Freedom, with David French as lead counsel, the case took over two years from the time it was filed in March 2006. They charged that Tech’s speech code, a speech zone, the “safe space” program, and the student activity fee violated their rights to free speech and religious liberty; the policies were selectively enforced against conservative groups. As a result of the lawsuit, the university was forced to repeal its speech code, alter its restrictive “free speech zone,” and eliminate the unconstitutional portion of the “safe space” zone. Despite the university’s assertions to the contrary, Sklar and Malhotra were clearly the victors. In February, they were presented the Ronald Reagan Award at the CPAC meeting for their efforts.

Orit Sklar earned a hard science degree. Those who acquired a political science credential are likely too dumb to do the work. Today’s less abled students often gravitate toward the vastly less challenging liberal arts. Ms. Sklar has a bright future. The center-right movement is lucky to have her.

“Part of the problem lies with the fact that the public’s information comes from official releases from the university’s administration — an administration unsympathetic, and indeed hostile, to those like Sklar and Malhotra.”

And of course anyone who has worked in a PR department or newspaper knows that today’s releases are written to make the editor’s job of creating newspaper content as easy as possible — preferably by writing the article for them within the text of the release. This is a very, very good point, and perhaps at least some of the good advice to come from it would be that more conservative organizations need to write more print-ready releases — or create broadcast-ready media — to spread their own messages via papers and broadcast news. The news media may be slanted liberal, but they’re also in more need of quality content, or at least content that appears to be quality, than most people suspect.

Congratulations to both of these young ladies. Standing for what is true and lawful is never easy especially today when conformity seems to be the major social goal of the younger generation. Taking on Academia too is not easy since the deck is stacked against the conservative almost from birth. This is mainly due to the fact that the education establishment is liberal and typically advocates feel good thinking rather than hard facts. These two should be an inspiration to young, middle aged, and old conservatives who can believe that our younger generation of foot soldiers are bright, articulate, prepared and most importantly tough enough to take on the mindless “bots” that are aligned against us. Thank you for the story.

Jul 27, 2009 - 5:35 am 9. Adina Kutnicki,Israel:

The moral fiber displayed by these two young women is what makes me hopeful that the future of America might very well be saved.

I confess, I am partial to engineers as I raised two of my own. I find engineers for the most part logical, incisive and when called for skeptical thinkers. But most importantly, these young women witnessed a grave injustice,(free speech for thee, but not for me) used their reasoned based skills, and then combined the two with moral outrage.

The quaint notion that students come to school believing they will be entering a marketplace of ideas is surely a rude awakening to the current generation of students.

The intolerable atmosphere on most campuses is so toxic, so hostile to all those who do not feed off of the leftist tree, that it is more than a slap in their faces, it is downright terrifying.

However, whereas most students are cowed into submission, dearly afraid that their grades will be downgraded-they often are-they are also loathe to be shunted to the outside of the acceptable pale of discourse.

Well, U of Georgia did not know who they were messing with when they encountered these 2 stalwart fighters. Fighters for what they believe in, and fighters for equal space for all, not just leftists.

I suspect that we have not heard the last of these women, after all, they are most likely the next generation’s up and coming leaders of substance, as opposed to the lightweights now leading America straight off a cliff.

You go girls!

Engineering students are less likely to be trapped into political correctness for at least two reasons. 1)Because they are taking so many math, science, and engineering courses, they are less likely to take the PC courses. 2)As engineering students are subjected to rigorous courses that require much logical thought, they are less likely to fall into the “I should believe this because it will show I am enlightened, progressive and tolerant” PC trap.

I worked with a Sklar who was a refugee from Ukraine WW2.

That is because usually conservative women aren’t destroying their bodies with constant sex and drugs. We really need to package Conservatism to the young as the new Revolution. present them with the idea that liberalism is not liberating, especially when mixed with State-ism. I really think we should sell T-shirts on campuses of Reagan and his revolutionary words. We need to recruit more young people like these to become agitators of the liberal cause.

the problems encountered by people who want freedom is intense.

the left has been mobilizing for decades, getting stronger and more extreme every year.

one reason is that they have the time …they have friends in government who support them (with money through grants) so basically your money (if you are a conservative) is used to fight you and force policy on you that you don’t want.

second, conservatives are busy working and trying to achieve the american dream (leftist both want to destroy your american dream and steal it for themselves. this is something that always surprised me …since if they destroy it then there is nothing to steal. BUT they don’t think that far)

GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO BE STOPPED. I have always though it is a simple process. if it is good for everyone then pass the bill.

if it is good for some (even it it is the majority) but tramples the rights of others ..DON’T PASS THE BILL.

sorry not fully on topic ….KEEP UP THE EFFORT SKLAR

I know several PoliSci majors. I wouldn’t call any of them geniuses, but they are about average intelligence, or slightly above. Then again, they’re all in the Marine Corps, which would explain the fact that they make a lot more sense than most liberal arts majors. Truth be told, I doubt most of them really even care about they’re courses; they just want to make sure they graduate on time so they can get commissioned as officers.

#15 Homero: “leftist both want to destroy your american dream and steal it for themselves. this is something that always surprised me …since if they destroy it then there is nothing to steal. BUT they don’t think that far.”

Touche! What you’re describing is the paradox of leftism. First they railed against the “establishment.” They are now the “establishment” and are even more rigid and inflexible than the establishment they railed against in the 60s.

That you want to keep the money you earned from working is “greedy” – from the leftist point of view. It isn’t honorable and it’s selfish. That they want to take from you what you have earned is not envy or greediness, from their point of view. It is honorable redistribution. Taking it by force is not criminal, as they intend to “do good deeds” by redistributing your money to those less fortunate (than themselves, that is). This makes them feel really, really good about themselves.

I commend these young women for their convictions. Our country could use a good civil engineer in the White House.

This story fills me with hope. What commendable young ladies.

I’ve often wished that we could replace all of the lawyers in our government with engineers. Maybe then we would get policies based on facts and sound theory. Then again, with supposedly stellar institutions like Georgia Tech trying to indoctrinate even their engineering students, there may not be a safe refuge for the next generation. Shame on GT for putting their personal political views above free speech and diversity of thought.

Jul 27, 2009 - 2:04 pm 35. Adina Kutnicki,Israel:

# 34-JMD – Have no fear. Caltech is aces, (take it from one who paid through the nose to educate my son) just skim through Dan Golden’s, ‘The Price of Admission’ for a glowing testimonial of the school, all the while eviscerating the hallowed Ivies.

This book blows the halo off of the most highly touted schools in the US, most especially Harvard. As a Harvard grad, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and an Editor at WSJ, Golden takes NO prisoners.

What he does point out is this – Caltech IS the gold standard chiefly because it is a true meritocracy, no pay-for play schemes and no affirmative action quotas. He gives high marks to MIT too, no pay-for-play, but they adhere to affirmative action quotas of approximately 6%.

So, while Caltech graduates about 1 Black a year,(the merit thing and all) MIT graduates approx 60.

At the end of this generation the Ivies and most liberal arts colleges will be exposed for what they truly are, indoctrination camps, as opposed to true bastions for serious scholarship. Left standing will be those schools that change their PC courses, as well as the engineering, tech oriented programs.

“Boy, what an embarrassing overreach. Care to do a 100-page critique of Homer’s Iliad in the original Greek? I’m sure it’s “vastly less challenging” than titrating acids and bases.”

Yet we scientists can actually earn a living, while you Homer afficionadoes live off the dole. It used to be that ‘liberal arts’ was a refuge for the geeky college types with no technical skill, and was shunned by society. Now the majority of kids skew into the ‘liberal arts’, are shocked when they graduate with no marketable talent, then they balloon the entitlement rolls while complaining about how primitive society is.

How many times do we need to parse The Iliad, anyway? Probably fewer times than we need to make scientific breakthroughs.

Jul 27, 2009 - 3:15 pm 37. David Thomson:

“Care to do a 100-page critique of Homer’s Iliad in the original Greek?”

Your point is well taken. Unfortunately, you forget something—most liberal arts students are doing nothing that difficult! You are obviously talking about an era of some 40-50 years ago. I suspect that you must be at least 55 years old. Moreover, the vast majority of today’s liberal arts students have probably never heard of Homer. Original Greek? Are you kidding? What planet do you live on? Many teachers would be content if their students even saw the movie, My Greek Wedding.

http://www.noindoctrination.org/cgibin/display_record.cgi?uid=315

Also some of you should give liberal art majors a break. A lot of us were promised big things by recruiters and high school councilors if we only went and earned a college degree. We didn’t assume that we’d learn absolutely nothing of marketable value….but that is what happened.

I think this was highway robbery on part of higher education to trick and dupe so many young people into what amounts to an overpriced and mostly worthless education. Rather than making fun of liberal arts majors, attack the higher ed system.

Apropos de “Vagina Monologues” which I ain’t seen or plan to see it (a theater goer friend here in LA described show as a best idiotic) – “Vagina Monologues” has been for years an offering of the US cultural centers in Eastern Europe as a “civilizing tool”, to the dismay of the locals who increasingly see America as being a major exporter of vulgarity and decadence.

And the “Vagina Monologues” is not some Troma, tongue-in-cheek production (actually I enjoyed “Blast The Blasphemous Slut” and “Dyke Bikers In Zoombie Town” – I saw those things years ago when working on low-bu productions), but an US embassy-sponsored event aiming at bettering the idea of America amongst peoples already suspicious of our ways.

RE #50/doppelganglander: [...] I have a lot of respect for scientists and engineers, but I’m not ashamed of my English degree. And no, I am not a barista – I make a nice living in a field related to my degree. [...]

Completely agree, Doppel – yet, as you well know, so much academic fraudulence and idiotic, lef-wing partisanship has found great breeding ground in the cubicles of the liberal arts departments that no wonder many people look at those disciplines as completely corrupt.

Much about fraud in physics I haven’t heard about in the past years, the “fusion/DePaw U” affair being the single one that comes to my mind (and rumors are that we haven’t really heard the last laugh regarding that matter – yet).

But, on the other hand, aren’t “Black Venus”, “Same Sex Marriages In The Eastern Church” and countless other “liberal arts” frauds still revered readings in college?
Is Jarred’s “Guns, Germs, etc.” offered in college with a must read companion like Landes’ “Wealth & Poverty Of Nations”? Are “The Moynahan Report” and Banfield’s “Moral Basis of a Retarded Society” texts the liberal arts majors must study instead of Derrida’s contortions?
And our Victor Davies Hanson, is he, at least! a suggested read in college? Nope – yet just a few weeks ago, walking by a bus stop by UCLA, I noticed a student reading the bio of…. Robert Mugabe! Heavens, Robert Mugabe’s bio as inspirational reading! Nicely prefaced by Kofi Anan! (True, the book was a 1990+ edition, yet upon querying her, she confirmed that it is in the syllabus).

Anyway – untill the bums will be kicked out from their cubicles, any electoral battle is doomed.

Once they’d gained some power within the system, it was time to slam the door on tolerance, which they existed only to demand, not to extend.
