Another close election. These are tumultuous times. Go Neo-cons go. Only YOU can save America. We should just set them up a country where they can fight the Liberals…or a region…like the Middle East!!! Omg I’ve got it!!
Then the survivalist crazies, and the Utopian-liberal crazies…can all go together!!!
…or everyone could start talking about the Constitution again.

Nov 4, 2008 - 6:54 am 8. Kevin Miltner:I agree with Brian’s point of view; Obama really would have to be more of an idiot that I give him credit for if he loses. He has black voters (no-duh), and the young ones are voting for him too because it would be “cool” to have a young, black president. He has the media on his side who, by the way, has already “annointed” him king. He also has spent so much money it is unconscionable. His 30 minute infomercial has also swayed some voters, but that’s no more reason to vote for him than voting for Michael Douglas for president because he played a great one in The American President. Because of this though it is more important than ever that McCain supporters get out and vote.

Alas, Scottie, ’tis the time of the Left and the Center after years of Republican disaster.
Agree with your premise that the Neocons must go, but the Republicans face years out of poverty – possibly extending to decades out of
power and even extinction if they do not go about rebuilding the Party smartly.
The problems are deeper than the cabal of Neocons advocating endless wars to help out ungrateful foreign nations. Republicans lost whole regions of the country by not being inclusionary enough – New England, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes States, West Coast. New England might be without a single Republican elected to the House, a “fact” not ever occuring before – dating to when Abraham Lincoln was alive.
They are seeing further erosion in the Southwest, Rocky Mountain States, even the South.
The Party is now the Party of the Rich instead of the working Reagan Democrat or the Middle Class. The Party of reckless spending, voodoo economics, gutting America of factories and good-paying blue collar and increasingly white collar jobs, Big Government Growth, and “deficits don’t matter”. The Party of the get rick quick schemes, rather than the voice of fiscal restraint and thrift and creating new good jobs.
You now have a Party dominated by the Religious Right – driving white women, hispanics off with their particular evangelical theology and extreme views on creationism, life. They have decided to start a war with Mormons, a critical part of the Coalition Reagan built – as heretics unfit to be fully accepted as “real Republicans” (dissing not only Mitt, but 4 of the most rock-solid Republican States). A BASE which now insists on religious litmus tests and dogma tests of 30-40 year old ideas. Insisting that national candidates and even local reps 1,000 miles from the Base Heartland -be elected with views that reflect constituents more like in rural Alabama than being a state leader who lives with and represents constituents in Maine, Minnesota, Washington, California, Then declaring such “deviants” from Southern-fried morality and old dogma as RINOs the Party should not respect.
You have the Corruptican problem to deal with, the Corporate Cronyists and those who would trade 10,000 lost jobs for one happy Wall Street Globalist making generous donations to Republican apparachniks.
You have an increasingly looney Libertarian wing who have gone to a freedom! Freedom! zealotry that insists on no duty to country or any responsibilities…their ideal now appears to be America would work best if we were as Free!! as Afghan tribesmen.
Look, I will likely stay Republican – but they have a cleanup like the Augean Stables pending, and a bloodletting to do. The neocons have to go, the Christian Zionists have to knock off their obsession with “protecting” the Jews and Israelis – who generally despise them. The remaining corrupticans tolerated for so long like DeLay and Ted Stevens have to be purged – not wait for indictments or wait on them to move on to lucrative private sector jobs which are basically “payback” for years of whoring in Congress.
The religious litmus tests against Mormons, hispanic Catholics, moderate Northern Catholics and Protestants has to end. Even atheists should be warmly welcomed in party ranks. Open tent philosophy espoused by Reagan should be re-embraced – stop trying to scare off women with threats that women and doctors involved in abortion, in vitro, birth control deserve moral reprimands even prison if the theocrats get power. No more Terri Schiavo fiascos, please. No more anti-science agitation, please. No more denouncing graduate degrees as “elitist crap Our Sarah never needed”, please.
Even if Democrats screw up, and they will, the Republicans still need a major cleanup, purge, and new direction towards inclusionism rather than “purity”.

Nov 4, 2008 - 10:46 am 19. Pinkytoo:“Fox news is showing that in PA a close state, obama has sent the black panthers to intimidate people at the polls”
Having just watched the clip from Faux News, what was said was that “McCain campaign workers report…” Typical innuendo passing as news.
I am a 54 year old white female. I went to a high school in Northern Virginia that was only integrated the year I started. I had hoped that by this point our country had moved beyond racism and could select the candidate of their choice based on issues and facts rather than fear and ignorance. Looks like I’ve been disappointed yet again.
By the way, back to the article this blog is linked to: I live on the West Coast now. I had to get in line at the polling place at 7 a.m. this morning just in case the election had been called by the time I got off work. This scenario has played out the last 20+ years I’ve lived in the Pacific time zone and there have been a number of elections that I didn’t even bother to vote since the media had already told me my vote wouldn’t count.
Nov 4, 2008 - 10:50 am 20. Roger L Simon:Let’s get serious here, Martge. Barack Obama did not send Black Panthers to intimidate people at the polls. That’s absurd. Whatever happened at that polling place was not instigated by the candidate. Making over-heated comments like that discredits your point. Thank you.
Nov 4, 2008 - 11:00 am 21. Paul R:I agree with Cedarford to some degree. The GOP has to be totally made over. Get rid of the neo-cons. While I am a strong Christian, I strongly support the separation of church & state. The religious right should not be dictating Republican policy. The GOP needs a strong, charismatic leader who will go back to the party’s core principles (less government – less spending). Sadly, I do not see any potential candidates in the Republican party who can do this.

You can see for yourself and determine whether they were legit or from Obama or whether they were intimidating at all. It looks like they were just standing around like ass-clowns. But the fact they have a night stick might be intimidating enough.
Either way, apparently the cops showed up and escorted them off (arrested? I have no idea, maybe just shooed them away and informed them they did not have the authority of the law). Anyway, you can see for yourself.
Can you spare me the racism stinks sermon, Pinkytoo. I’m 15 years younger than you, grew up in a rabid liberal college town going to a rabid liberal public school (where we were introduced to only the pro-choice opinion and the glorious stories of teachers who dodged the draft). It was like Berkeley of the South (I used to live in Berkeley, so I’d know). I’m so sick of cries of racism I could vomit. And if you even think I’m racist for being conservative (despite my childhood indoctrination), well then consider the fact that I voted for an African American over Bush in the 2000 primaries. K?
Nov 4, 2008 - 11:09 am 24. LouAnn:Paul R and Cedarford: Yes! A total overhaul. I also agree with separation of church and state, especially after speaking to a local judge, a mennonite who explained his faith’s persecution in Europe. We need definite separation. Also, I can never forget Dobson telling his conservative audience to not vote in the ‘96 election. Ugh. We need less of that. People like that clearly don’t understand the fundamentals of our country.
Nov 4, 2008 - 11:23 am 25. Pinkytoo:“And if you even think I’m racist for being conservative (despite my childhood indoctrination), well then consider the fact that I voted for an African American over Bush in the 2000 primaries. K?”
Where did I ever say conservative equals racist? NOWHERE. My point was that despite the internet, 24-hour news, etc. etc. there are people who not only believe, but choose to perpetrate, lies and innuendo. I’m just a bit fed up, having to have listened to, amongst other things, 2 months of constant ads on TV claiming that “Proposition 8 will restore traditional marriage.” I REALLY don’t think that anyone’s proclivities are any of my business, but I also have observed that traditional marriage has not been banned in CA for the last 4 months (and hence doesn’t need to be “restored”). It makes ME want to vomit to think that people are still teaching their children intolerance and fear of anyone who doesn’t agree with their religious beliefs or who might look different from them.
OK stepping down off the soapbox now. Thank goodness this only happens once every 4 years, I need that long to stock up on enough scotch to get me through it!
Nov 4, 2008 - 11:29 am 26. mnotaro:Of course everyone who is not voting for Obama is being considered a racist! Maybe I’m not voting for him because he is not qualified.. maybe I’m not voting for him because of his health plan which is going to increase my premium…maybe I’m not voting for him because he is a elite socialist and wants to tax hard working people and give it to the unemployed! Is that enough reasons for you? Or do you just think I’m being racist for not voting for the liberal illuminati?

Nov 4, 2008 - 11:57 am 29. Pinkytoo:You are not, and have never been, a Republican. You are so worried about the religious right that you forget about the real state sponsored religion and that is Environmentalism. It is costing you even more money than Obama will. Try to keep your comments a little short of screen size. I am tired of scrolling past your drivel.
I’m not voting for Obama because I’m a “liberal illuminata.” In fact, about 8 months ago I seriously thought I’d be voting for McCain today. But then I didn’t get any answers as to how I was going to be able to sell my house which is supposed to be my retirement fund…or get a car loan when my 11-year-old car gives up…or whether to buy food or $5/gal gas… So I realized that I might go from hard working to unemployed in the blink of an eye and I just may NEED that “socialist” handout!
Nov 4, 2008 - 11:58 am 30. LouAnn:Pinkytoo: Now you’re discussing Prop 8?
I was working from your sentence: “Looks like I’ve been disappointed yet again.” Which followed your blathering about racism being yet still a heavy burden we must draaaaaaag around with us day after day after day. Looove the drama.
I’d say keep beating that drum, but once I do, you pick up all the other drums to beat — Prop 8, what next will you whine about? The poor, shall we whine about the poor? No? How about the middle class? How about BIG OIL? What will make you happier than to whine? The fragile environment? How about that damned Bush? Can you determine yet whether he’s utterly stupid or diabolically evil (the latter would require intelligence)? Are you a troofer? If so, then that really expands your opportunities to open up and really whine? Don’t let it just trickle out in dribs and drabs — you let it go with long preachy whine. I’m all ears, whether I like it or not. I have to take a heaping spoonful of your sickening, sanctimonious crap.
Nov 4, 2008 - 11:59 am 31. LouAnn:Pinkytoo … to add to my prior rant …
your whines are precisely why I want our government, Dems and Repubs, out of our personal lives. Then, someday, maybe we’ll all be free again to think for ourselves, without fear of being condemned for having a differing opinion. And you will have nothing to whine about. THAT is my American Dream.
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:04 pm 32. Pinkytoo:Dearest LouAnn,
I don’t even know what a “troofer” is.
Yours in Sanctimosity
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:08 pm 33. LouAnn:I’d like an answer to my question, too:
Mr. Obama:
29 states are projected to have budget shortfalls in 2009. Gov Paterson of NY acknowledged on NPR that NY was already overspending before the economic crisis. If most state revenues come from businesses, how is your plan to increase business taxes not at odds with states’ efforts to generate more revenues?
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:09 pm 34. LouAnn:Pink: You live on the West Coast and never heard of a troofer … not convincing.
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:17 pm 35. Pinkytoo:“Then, someday, maybe we’ll all be free again to think for ourselves, without fear of being condemned for having a differing opinion. And you will have nothing to whine about.”
Irony, thy name is LouAnn.
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:18 pm 36. LouAnn:Shhugar …
Pink, did you just say your house is your retirement fund? And from the litany of other concerns, I assume you have no 3 or 6 month cushion in the bank.
And if you live on the West Coast, I assume you have high taxes (you mentioned $5/gas, but links tell me that the highest avg prices today are $2.78 … still). Man. That’s the problem with living on the Left Coast. The prices forced me to leave — and I’ve lived in NYC, ATL, DC, Bay Area — all too high. Doesn’t seem the time for Obama’s tax plan — $250K to live in WVA is quite different than $250K to live in CA.
That sucks.
Obama will not save you. You need to get a financial advisor that can pro bono give straight-up advice and set you on the right path so that by retirement you’re okay. No one wants to live on handouts. And that’s all the fed will give you — in today’s scenario and O’s scenario. I love the Lightbulb Press books. They’ve helped me a lot.
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:30 pm 37. Pinkytoo:LouAnn, on one thing we can agree:
California sucks!
p.s. I’m not looking for Obama to save me, just buy me some time til I retire and go back to my house which I will hopefully still own and which is NOT in CA. Oh yeah, I’ve also got that 401K…PFFFFT…
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:39 pm 38. LouAnn:If you have a 401(k), then take a look here: http://www.usnews.com/blogs/capital-commerce/2008/10/23/would-obama-dems-kill-401k-plans.html
The promise is to return 3% + inflation, which seems paltry to me.
Also, not sure of the timing of your house sale (you mentioned selling it for retirement earlier), but I expect there will be a lot of boomers’ inventory on the market in coming years — not sure where the demand will come from if our economy continues to slide — so that might also put a damper on prices. Maybe there’s a way to time that. Anyone have a crystal ball?
And then there are cap gains, which I believe would go up under a McCain or Obama administration. That will impact your house sale, unless its your first home then you’re clear $250k (I think).
Nov 4, 2008 - 12:58 pm 39. EJ Westlake:New Evidence Shows That George W. Bush Presidency Part of Martian Plot
ANN ARBOR – While pundits shake their heads and wonder why the last eight years have been such a horrible example of executive leadership in the White House, new evidence has emerged to explain the failings of George W. Bush. “He’s a Martian,” notes one White House aide speaking on condition of anonymity, “It was bound to come out sooner or later, but he was sent as a vassal of the Martian Emperor. Obviously, the Martian plot failed.”
While a Martian takeover of the Planet Earth was not imminent, sources close to the president say that the plan was to slowly consolidate power. The Martian platform of reducing access to education, lowering wages and the quality of jobs, keeping healthcare too expensive for most Americans, and causing occasional political instability was part of the strategy to keep people ignorant, poor, and frightened. The Martian plan was to also abolish sex education to insure that there would be an ample supply of slaves when the time came to strike.
What the Martians didn’t bank on was the erosion of America’s place in the world. The U.S. would have little influence over the rest of the planet, although plans to install Martian leaders in China, Russia, and Brazil were also underway.
“I can’t believe we missed the signs that this was happening,” said a disbelieving Senator McConnell. I knew there was something uncanny and strange about him, but I thought it was a Texas thing.” Secretary Rice echoed McConnell, although she claims the RNC should have seen the signs. “W did have that thing where you could see what looked like another set of eyelids. He kept flashing them at people during long meetings as a sort of a prank. He thought it was funny, but it just creeped everyone out.” Congressman Boehner also noted a strange encounter with Bush during protracted confirmation hearings for one of the appellate court judges. Boehner interrupted him when he appeared to be praying. “I thought he was praying for the troops, but he was clutching a half-eaten rodent in his hand. He acted like he had just found it, but it looked like he had entrails between his teeth. I blocked it out of my mind and hadn’t remembered it until now.”
Democrats are saying this is proof that the Republican party has been infiltrated by aliens and cite the recent endorsement of Senator John McCain by the Roswell Daily Record as proof. “Where does Vice President Cheney go?” asked Speaker Pelosi referring to the fact that he seems to disappear for weeks at a stretch. She noted that a full investigation would soon be underway.
