fred,

Thanks for clearing out Iraq for Iran. After a string of humiliating defeats, the US will finally abandon Iraq militarily. Then once the dust settles, the Iranian are in control of the whole region, and they didn’t have to fire a shot. You destroyed their old rival for them.

Russia can do fine without oil because Russians are survivors. As when the rouble collapsed in 1991 we simply reverted to barter. I doubt Americans could pass that test, after 200 years of greed and empire-building.

Anyway pack up and leave. You will do that anyway when the $13trillion bill arrives. Maybe Iran will send an eviction notice, just to make it all proper.

#108:Dave - The loony left never fails to amuse.

It's constant entertainment, isn't it? Heaven forbid schools should actually start teaching some real history at some point. Think of all the laughs we'd miss out on!

Apparently kochevnik missed the lesson where they discussed how Mossadeq pushed for renegotiation (read: blackmail) with Britain (not the U.S.) on the two countries' oil production agreement and ultimately the nationalization (read: theft) of the oil-producing infrastructure that had been built by the British (not the Persians). He accomplished this with lots of help (strikes, etc.) from the communist Tudeh Party. Mossadeq's actions resulted in an oil embargo, pushing Iran's economy into the toilet and creating the well-worn "crisis" that all despots rely upon to stir up public support for well-worn "emergency powers" (see also: "Change").

After that Mossadeq dissolved the Iranian parliament, succeeded in eliminating Constitutionally guaranteed secret ballots, won the next election to PM by a 99.9% "majority" (see also: Hussein, Saddam), and seized control of the government. For his excesses, Mossadeq was formally - and Constitutionally - dismissed by the Shah who, himself, had to flee as a result.

The popular myth that the CIA rolled into Iran and overthrew a democratically-elected ruler who was just quietly minding his own business is one of the most idiotic historical revisions going. The conflict was between Iran and Britain, and ultimately caused by Iranian greed, not any involvement of the U.S.

MI-6 dragged the CIA into the mix by knowing which buttons to push in the 50s, i.e., the threat of communism in the oil-rich Middle East. It worked, and the (stupid) CIA has been popularly but erroneously blamed for Mossadeq's "illegal" ouster ever since, despite only marginal involvement.

Ironically Mossadeq's communist "reforms" were also partly responsible for ruining the country's economy, ultimately causing even his supporters in the Tudeh Party (which relationship had sparked the interest of the CIA in the first place) to abandon him.

Most ironically, despite Mossadeq's strong secular stance, he was (and still is) held up as the hero during the 1979 uprising by the religious whack-job fanatics who now control Iran.

Neo-Neocon is warning us against falling prey to
Obama derangement syndrome, and here are you guys diving into it head first. Sheesh! If you right-wingers are supposed to be so much more rational than the lefties, let's see it. (Revenge may be sweet, I know [for Bush derangement syndrome], but two wrongs still don't make a right.) By all means, be eternally vigilant, which Ben Franklin said is the price of liberty. Work with Obama when you can, criticize him when you can't, filibuster when you feel you have to stop something especially pernicious. Fight with all your might for your ideas and do your best to persuade people rationally. But for Heaven's sake, don't go batshit insane on us! You'll only give yourselves heart attacks, and you won't help the country one bit.

"You Americans stabbed Mossadeq in the back so you could steal Iran Oil. You then named it BP."

You have to wonder why Americans would take the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and rename it British Petroleum.

Well, I guess we do some pretty silly things from time to time.

"You then implanted the Shaw..."

Having an implanted shaw is pretty painful, or so I've heard.

The loony left never fails to amuse.
