Celebrities Swoon for Obama

The stars roll out the red carpet for Obama. Does anyone care? (Also, Phyllis Chesler on Jane Fonda and Erica Jong's pre-election hysteria here)

Celebrities are doing their darnedest to affect the upcoming presidential elections. Sure, it didn’t work in 2004, despite their massive push on behalf of Sen. John Kerry.

Remember Vote for Change?

They didn’t learn their lesson, and they’ve only upped the ante this time around to support Sen. Barack Obama.

They just can’t help themselves.

Some famous folks are rallying the vote in vaguely nonpartisan — but creepy — ways. They’re shooting “get out and vote” videos meant to flourish on the web. Check out the “Don’t Vote” clip, which manages to be both endless and endlessly patronizing. Do citizens really need Leonardo DiCaprio to remind them what’s at stake Nov. 4?

Others are taking a more direct approach, pleading with voters to pull the lever, or punch the button, for Sen. Barack Obama.

Either way, it’s simply more of the same — celebrities with little acknowledged expertise in political science acting like learned professors, or at least the kind who bring their views into the classroom. Hard to believe any sentient being will make his or her decision based on what Madonna and her ilk thinks.

That never prevents them from speaking out. It must feel too good to stop. Plus, their Hollywood peers will give them hearty handshakes for their efforts and declare how “brave” they were for taking a courageous stand.

You want courageous? Try wearing a McCain/Palin button to a table read or red carpet film premiere.

To paraphrase P.T. Barnum…
There’s a new “celebrity” born every minute

..it’s certain that Matt Damon isn’t crying about this, but one of the unintended consequences of his little rant about Palin and the Disney hockey movie was to convince me that I am not interested in seeing any of his movies ever.

This choice was not made because of the political views he expressed — he is entitled to them — but of the ham-handed manner in which he expressed his thoughts. I mean, the guy was barely litrate.

..ain’t wasting $10 on this guy. No sir!

I made a decision about a decade ago to never go to the movies again and only see films on the tube or netflix. I did this because I find so much of Hollywood ideas and spokes people way too left for my tastes. I voted with my wallet. Cannot remember the last time I was in a theater and shelled out big bucks for a flick.

If Hollywood wants my money they need to be more balanced. Until then I think we will both do fine without one another.

Celebrities have reduced themselves to a bit of a freak show.

And the media has damaged and disgraced itself immensely by reporting celebrity opinion as if it carried more significance than that of historians, philosophers, scientists, and subject matter experts. It’s completely un-serious.

You know, actors were actually treated like dirt in the ancient Roman world… in fact, in one scene of that HBO series “Rome”, there’s something said about how horrible it would be for a patrician woman to be even seen with an actor, something like that. I wonder if they were on to something…

THIS JUST IN:

President-Presumptuous Obama has leaked his choices for cabinet positions in his forthcoming administration.

The word is:

Education: Bill Ayers
Veterans Affairs: John Kerry
Health & Human Services: Reverend Jeremiah Wright
Commerce: Oprah
Labor: Bruce Springsteen
Agriculture: Ted Turner
Interior: Barbra Streisand

Nothing confirmed yet, but the source is valid and confident.

I wish actors would just shut up and act. That is if they can. I do not want to know what their polital views are at all. So many of them have let me down. The ones that are political I totally ignore and won’t see their movies. I pray that Russel Crowe, Gerard Butler or Joaquin Phoenix will keep it to themselves. *fingers crossed*…..probably won’t though

Who Cares if Hollyweird Swoons over Obama as if anybody with Brains gives a Damn what they think. They are a bunch of Arogant,Pompous,Spoiled, overpaid, and Immature that give no Weight or Balance to the average American who has a real job and pays the consequences of his or her actions.I would not want any support from people who think that they should be pampered and not have to be responsible for there actions given the way most of them act.I have no respect for them or anybody they support and as a Disabled U.S. Vet and a 8th generation American its about this Country and hard working Americans who have given there lives for this Great Land and not the Socialists who support the handouts waiting for there Government to guide there lives.

Nov 1, 2008 - 7:44 am 12. Ditto:

USAF Captain, I feel the same way. As long as the athletes play their sports, singers simply sing, actors simply act and the artists stick to their talents on canvas and dance, I enjoy watching them and being entertained by them. But when they try to advise me on matters of social and political import, I lose all interest in seeing them do anything.

“I’m not a doctor, but I played on on t.v.” So do we turn our loved ones over to that actor’s care? Hardly.

Nov 1, 2008 - 9:12 am 13. Boglee:

Actors get paid a lot of money for pretending to be somebody else, not exactly the grounding in reality I look for in my political advisors.

For Energy I’m thinking Al Gore. Or maybe that’s EPA?

My take on celebrities:

“You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious. “

Nov 1, 2008 - 11:18 am 16. Marc Malone:

I pay no attention to their political voicings. I also don’t cut off my nose to spite my face. I go see their movies. Of course, not too many, as so much put out these days is such dreck. Many TV series now are far superior to movies.

Nov 1, 2008 - 11:49 am 17. Anita Hope:

Salrherring. Johnnie Cochran is deceased, and most of the people from Vietnam & Korea that have come to America and become citizens are voting for McCain/Palin, as they know all to well what a socialistic government will do to their and our lives. It is the citizens born here and never experiencing a dictator form of government control that are being led to the pillars or slaughter. I believe Jane Fonda appologized to the military and American’s, though she was wrong for her
actions, but I have not heard or seen her get involved during this political civil war.The rest of your selection looks pretty good. Regarding Oprah, I will say she did
start the American women to read and guess being in Chicago and her financial base is only secure as long as she does not ruffle feather’s, we must admit she is one of those big corporations that he will be forced to protect and her taxes will find a way to be hidden, sort of like where all his big donations are coming from.

Um, women in America read books way before Oprah. In fact, I hear some of them even wrote a few.

I love the idea that celebs think their opinions actually matter. How’d that work out for the Dixie Chicks?

People like these celebs who make EVERYTHING about politics are nothing but a bunch of huge buzzkills. I refuse, absolutely refuse to discuss politics at parties or when I’m out socially or when I’m at work. Because frankly, I have better things to do than listen to people pontificate about how awesome their thought process is and how everyone else is retardedly stupid.

I honestly couldn’t care less about a celeb’s opinion about anything if I like their work. But when they constantly ram their opinions down your throat like they’re Winston Churchill or something, that’s when I shut off the TV, stop going to movies, or push mute.

Nov 1, 2008 - 4:11 pm 21. Roger Godby:

I’ve not paid to see a movie in a theater for about a decade; I last rented one perhaps two years ago. I live abroad, so I’m mercifully spared much US TV. However, the other day a rerun of “Alf” was being aired. Alf calls the President (then Reagan) and tells him (and the Russians, whom he doesn’t call) to destroy all the missiles. When the Air Force 1 staff put Reagan on the phone, they have to guide him through the whole process of finding the phone, which button to push, from which side. The leftwing bias and ignorance has been around for a long time. Of course, Reagan outsmarted essentially all the bright lights of Hollywood and academia, which is why they still hate him.

I hate crime, but when it comes to political propagandizing artists, actors, and other dealers of the incontinent untruths, I do thank the internet for making their output free for those who want it.

Nov 1, 2008 - 6:03 pm 22. hp:

this election has most assuredly brought out the best and worst of many. i lost a lot of respect for friends, too, for the same reason mjk says. i’d had it beyond “here” with people shoving THEIR CHOICE down my throat.

wish more of them had participated on the same venues under the same circumstances. they’d have found out just how much “freedom” they’ll have should their chosen one win.

i remained literally shellshocked at the unmitigated stomping of very basic civil rights that has been perpetrated by the democratic side.

and so far they’re pretty much getting away with it. no outcry. thank you, “lame” stream media.

it’s like we’ve been players, pawns, stooges in some game we didn’t know existed. led to the brink of believing things like rights and freedom genuinely existed. now the ones who have apparently all along been playing us while instead plotting their coup are maliciously, abhorrently on their way to [jerking] those rights and freedoms straight out from under us.

and nothing. no justice for the shafted.

anywhere.

Nov 1, 2008 - 11:18 pm 27. Anita Hope:

seguin, I guess I did not clarify myself regarding reading, I took it for granted you would have known book sales were way down as more young house wives were watching TV and she was the stimulous needed to get this age group back to books over TV soaps. It had nothing to do with politics, but started young & old women to form book discussion groups, a productive stimulous that had been needed in many of todays young families. Her big mistake was getting involved in the political arena, she has made her choice and will have to live with it, but has lost the respect of many of her listeners, myself included. Have a good weekend.

Nov 1, 2008 - 11:42 pm 28. Jenett:

The celebrities should remember the following:

September 11 Attacks
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_11,_2001_Terrorist_Attack

Exactly on the day of the attacks on 9-11-2001 the domestic terrorist BILL AYRES released a book of memoirs of his bombing the pentagon, capital building and other American targets. OBAMA STARTED HIS POLITICAL CAREER IN THE HOME OF BILL AYRES A SELF-DESCRIBED ANARCHIST & MARXIST (KARL MARX FOUNDED COMMUNISM)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voBBx9EaEGA
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F02E1DE1438F932A2575AC0A9679C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=all

Obama glorifies his history as a “community organizer” but the term may well be a euphemism for “communist organizer.” Why? The Saul Alinsky method is the primary method of “community organizing” and Saul Alinsky was a communist. Also, in Obama’s memoirs he sites a man named “Frank” as his friend and adviser. “Frank,” as it turns out was Frank Marshal Davis who was a member of the old Moscow-controlled Communist Party USA. See how community organizers are taking over the world.

Rashid Khalidi and the Obamas have dinner often. Why is that important? Among other things, Rashid Khalidi was a spokesman for the PLO when it was a terrorist organization. Rashid Khalidi is responsible for inviting the president of Iran, Ahmadinejad to speak in the U.S. at Columbia University. Rashid Khalidi defended Ahmadinejad against the negative press he recieved while in the United States.
(Scroll Wikipedia page until you see Obama in blue.)

I found this disturbing quote online:
“Two years ago, Hatem El-Hady was the chairman of the Toledo, Ohio-based Islamic charity, Kindhearts, which was closed by the US government in February 2006 for terrorist fundraising and all its assets frozen. Today, El-Hady has redirected his fundraising efforts for his newest cause — Barack Obama for President.”

About Taxes:
Which party traditionally raises taxes? When it comes to taxes is history a predictor of who will raise taxes on YOU?

About Gas Prices:
Which party traditionally is against drilling for oil in the United States and yet says almost nothing if China drills right off of Cuba just miles of the Florida coastline. The Democrats. Obama does not have a good record on drilling for oil either and would be swayed by the Democrats and their celebrity donors who are against drilling in the U.S.

John McCain says drill in the U.S. and his party will support him in that goal.

One of the funniest things that won’t leave me alone since I’ve read this is, here in France all the journalists on the main news programs just gush Oh George Clooney has just endorsed Obama, Brad pitt, Madonna etc, it’s really funny they never seem to point out real people endorsing him-just thought it’s funny and it seems to fit the article.

Classic old right wing tactic: when all else fails, attack Hollywood, unless it is Mel Gibson, cause he is so saintly!

Nov 2, 2008 - 12:10 pm 32. Someone75:

I wish celebrities would quit giving us their political opinions. They are entertainers, not political analysts.

However, if you guys had celebrities backing McCain, I highly doubt you’d have such scorn for them. Kind of like I have scorn for the slack-jawed small town idiots who think the financial crisis was a surprise. I’ve listened to small town America and I’m shocked at how ignorant they are. Good values don’t help much if you’re just generally uninformed about everything that doesn’t directly related to guns, cattle, and fertilizer.

Nov 2, 2008 - 1:16 pm 33. Small Town College Grad:

To #32 Someone 75:

As someone who lives in small town America, I take umbrage at your comments. Many of us choose to live here to avoid just the kind of nonsense that goes on in big city America. Contrary to your opinion, many of us have college degrees, read newspapers, surf the internet, and yes, think for ourselves. Just because we don’t agree with you does not mean we are uniformed. On the contrary we probably know much more than you ever will. You see, here we have to learn to fend for ourselves, live in peace with our neighbors, and cope without whining because we know that doesn’t change anything. If we know about cattle, we also know about market futures, economics, accounting, agriculture, meteorology, and animal husbandry, because that is what it takes to be a cattle rancher and farmer. If we know about guns, it is because sometimes we have to protect those assets you call cattle.

I don’t have scorn for celebs endorsement as much as I have a dislike for them assuming I should value their opinion solely based on their celebrity. I value those who give me a legitimate reason why I should listen to their opinion though, even though those are few and far between in the Obama camp. As to Celebrities endorsing McCain, you just don’t hear about them because the MSM chooses to ignore them. The following list took me less that 5 minutes to find.

Doesn’t it suck to be summarily lumped into a stereotype? Your people love to do that to me. I’m sure there ARE a lot of small towners out there that aren’t idiots. But that’s the genius of this forum – it doesn’t matter! You can be totally genuine and people here call you an idiot, a dupe, and many other things that I won’t repeat.

The thing is, I used to have respect for small town citizens, until they became hateful and arrogant. Please don’t ask me to believe that the majority of small town Americans are plugged into current events. I live in IOWA. I know these people. There are some people out there that are exceptions, but rural areas barely have dial-up connections.

Thanks for the response though. You seem intelligent.

I love Matt Damon. He’s good-looking and a great actor. I could care less who he is voting for in any election. I will still go see his movies but I will not vote for his candidate just because “he said so”. That goes for any actor or anybody! I do my own research, form my own opinions and vote how I want. I love being an American!
