When I hear one of the Hollywood greats like Heston has died, a part of my past goes with them. The memories are still with me, though. What an awsome man in every way from an actor to a family man.
George Clooney could only dream to be the man that Heston was.

He was a "man" someone with his integrity and sense
of decency a part of his character.

He said, after his wife had died that if he did not
believe she was waiting for him, he could never live
another day without her

Imagine a man saying something like that in this day
and age?

(Our world is getting smaller and nastier quickly as
America shows the world the politicians who think
lying is normal and people accept that just fine.
How often does Hillary or Obama have to lie before
people see the truth about them?)

Sigh, he will be missed by his family and will remain
a great memory to those of us who appreciated him.

One of the great scenes from El Cid shows Charlton Heston begging the king's champion to take back an insult he has leveled on the Cid's father. Too filled with pride, the champion refuses to do it. It is at that point that Heston, as the Cid, unsheathes his sword and says, "Can a man live without honor?" Obviously, for Charlton Heston, the answer was no. He lived his life with a level of honor most Hollywood types could not even fake if offered 20 million dollars. God bless Mr. Heston and his family; I will truly miss him.

I had the great fortune of getting to personally meet Mr. and Mrs. Heston back in the early 1990'. In fact, I sat right next to them during a luncheon at the College of Santa Fe. The Hestons had paid a brief visit to the college's Moving Image department. I can remember how suprised I was at how old and smaller in stature Mr. Heston had become. But you know, when he opened his mouth and began to speak, he became bigger than life once again. The Hestons were very open and cordial and everyone at the luncheon that day was touched by a rare encounter with diginty, love, humbleness, and warmth.

Growing up in the '50's as an American in London England, I and my friends all shared Heston's values and views...Sadly how times have changed !

Rick Moran:

The gaping hole in your narrative on Charlton Heston that explains who he is more than anything else you have said: His unabashed love of the stage and his preference for it. And finally your failure to mention Will Penny his personal favorite of all his roles (and in many ways comparable to John Wayne's "The Shootist").

Rick, minor quibble, but in 55 Days in Peking, Heston's character was a Marine officer, not Army, I believe. My brother, a former Marine, confirmed this and added that his character was based on Smedley Butler, who went on to become a major general in a long career and was something of a character.

Great post and great work. I will always think of Charlton Heston as sterling character and Great American. What a wonderful career from a time long since passed when stars were truly Stars and class and style counted as a measure of the actor's value. Never again will there be such men in Hollywood. Heck, they couldn't even find Americans to act the lead roles in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma!

Heston was a great actor and a man of principal who didn't care if his stands were popular or not. There is not one actor today that can stand up to his example. I doubt that where will be one again unless Hollywood changes.

Class is something Hollywood can't even define today.
