Chris Matthews’ Honeymoon Softball
Rather than ask tough questions about Obama's governing team, the Hardball host keeps on tingling.
“I’ve been following politics since I was about five,” said Mr. Matthews. “I’ve never seen anything like this. This is bigger than Kennedy. [Obama] comes along, and he seems to have the answers. This is the New Testament. This is surprising.”
— The inimitable Chris Matthews, Host of MSNBC’s talk show Hardball
Even though Chris Matthews had been a Democrat speechwriter and aide as well as a political journalist for decades, it was his inflamed skewering of Bill and Hillary Clinton during their scandal-ridden White House years that catapulted Matthews’ name to household-word status.
As Joan Walsh of Salon.com wrote of Matthews’ Clinton-bashing in 2003:
Nobody who watched Matthews’ shouting, spittle-spewing performance art night after night could question his sincerity: Here was a one-time Peace Corps volunteer from a blue-collar family — and a lifelong Democrat who had worked for House Speaker Tip O’Neill — and he clearly loathed Clinton for bringing shame to his office and his party.
Matthews has claimed that he voted for George Bush, but once the Iraq War began, Matthews quickly did an about-face and has effectively skewered W on his war policy much the same way he did the Clintons for their political and moral corruption.
Gosh, if I didn’t know better, I might conclude that “skewering” sells, while “nicey-nice” makes ratings plummet.
And it’s true. Conflict sells; unity doesn’t.
It’s very doubtful that Chris Matthews would enjoy the fame and fortune that he has if he did not put guests of all political stripes on the hot seat with his in-your-face, relentless challenges on just about every dotted “i” and crossed “t” of political trivia he could unearth.
But along comes Barack Obama, and Chris Matthews — accompanied by a host of other highfalutin media big wigs — has decided that rallying around the flag of an Obama presidency is just the ticket.
On that lovely note, Mr. Matthews has chimed in with an early response to the Obama transition leak that the infamous Eric Holder will become attorney general in the new administration. In what appears to be a sign of Matthews’ honeymoon softball with the president-elect, Matthews gave a one-sentence acknowledgment of the Holder appointment on his Tuesday show and then proceeded to announce his new segment, called Pardon Watch.
And what is Pardon Watch? It’s a nifty, two-bit entertainer’s look at the cast of folks who just might receive pardons from W in his last days in office. In other words, Pardon Watch is designed to remind viewers on a nightly basis of every Republican scandal of the past eight years, while deflecting attention from Obama’s parade of new appointments, many of which seem scandalous in and of themselves.
It is the intentional deflection aspect of Pardon Watch that speaks volumes about what we can expect from Chris Matthews in the coming four years.
We commoners could call it “honeymoon softball” or “unity on steroids.”
You pick.

Nov 24, 2008 - 1:22 am 3. bankruptcy:At first I thought electing Obama was a bad idea.
McCain would have stepped in and the stock market would have went back to 14000. -Business as usual-
But with Obama it has dropped 20 percent. I look at it as getting rid of the old fat barons of greed on wall street.
Now they will have to survive like I do, unless Obama bails them out.
We had to put our business into bankruptcy under the new Bush bankruptcy laws. Hell- Even the lawyers and administrators don’t know what to do. But at least I am protected from my creditors- See you next time around boys! America will either emerge as a lean green fighting machine- Or we will all keep the soup and bread lines warm.
One more thought!
It is fun watching these people that forced/asked Bush to institute these new bankruptcy laws- Trying to avoid bankruptcy.
CITI Group comes to mind, NBC might not be far behind!
How does it feel boys?!?

Nov 24, 2008 - 3:16 am 6. Alessandro Machi:Let’s get something straight here. I will ALWAYS be MORE ASHAMED of the 12 Republicans who impeached Bill Clinton on charges that almost 1/2 of the original 12 Republicans were committing themselves.
The Republicans abused the purpose of putting someone under oath, I call it “Abuse of oath”. If they had asked “President Clinton, Did you engage in non-consensual sex with Monica Lewinsky?” Then his no answer would have been truthful.
Don’t sit here and try and spin that the Clinton years were shameful when 70% of the American people were disgusted with the republicans for their Impeachment, hypocrtical witch hunt.
You disgust me for even implying it was the Clintons who were the shameful ones as if the majority agrees with you, you are in the minority on that one, don’t spin it as if it is a commonly agreed upon position.

Nov 24, 2008 - 4:31 am 7. ApplePie:It should be a ball of fun to watch Chris Matthews – who lost his balls while drooling over and cheerleading for Barack Obama – now try to appear as if he has the kahones to pick up the political commentary ball and run. The ball is in his court – but my expectations are negligible.
I used to watch Matthews before he totally compromised himself (as did the majority of the mainstream media) by becoming a non-stop ball player and propagandist for the Obama campaign.
Matthews now has ZERO credibility except among those who only want to hear about Barack’s three point basketball goals and other eye glazing “Yes we can” moments.
I heard that Matthews wants to run for political office on the Democratic ticket – thus he can use his cable TV program to insure that Obama stays the “Messiah” and doesn’t become a political ball and chain around Matthews neck.
What a slimeball!
Nov 24, 2008 - 4:50 am 8. misanthropicus:Re #5/SAF: “[...] It is (still) a free country. Chris Mathews has every right to be in the tank for Obama. At least he isn’t subtle about it. [...]‘
SAF, I find in your position the mixture of supeficial libertarianism and ostentatious enlightenment which generally infects liberals. And obviously, you’re wrong.
And here’s why: it is one thing to support in a rally in McArthur Park Obama and his wholesome views & acts, and it is an entirely different and WRONG thing to do the same from the position of authority which the traditional media still has. Many (although less and less) people still take the information coming from networks or other commmunications entities as IMPARTIAL & OBJECTIVE and having no shadow, PARTISAN intentions behind, something of a weather report’s, Underwriters Lab’s or geological survey’s solidity – and this assumption is taken advantage of, on daily basis, by the liberal-occupied communications establishment.
Remember the term “crime done under the color of authority”? False cops, false city workers, false INS or IRS agents who, either by intimidation or enhanced credibility perperate crimes, some quite vicious? The courts, when sentencing consider this type of background as an important, aggravating element – and in this situation is Matthews and his crew, who dressed as railroad workers wave to people to cross or not cross the rails as they see it fit, not according to the traffic’s precise realities.
Now visualise this: when you will come home tonight, and you will see the coroner’s etc. around your place and you will ask the neighbors why didn’t they stop the murderers enter your house, you’ll hear – why should we, it was just two city workers with clipboards, badges and an instrument for measuring radon.
Nov 24, 2008 - 4:57 am 9. Lynn:SAF, they weren’t city workers – the murderers were Mathews and his lot.
I saw the love-fest for the President-elect Sunday morning between Matthews, Woodward, Borger,Kay, and Gregory. It was beyond odd, and seemed as if the press are ready to write his legacy even before he starts his first day as President. This projection of their desires is strangely fascinating and revolting at the same time.
Nov 24, 2008 - 5:08 am 10. The Wizard:The Obamanation is disgusting. He is not the Messiah….he is an “empty suit” with no credentials, leadership abilities, ethics, morals or experience. His vision of “change” appears to be Clinton Administration, Part Two; the “hope” is that you won’t notice. The rush to rename the world after him, needs to be put on hold. Once Americans have no jobs, savings are erased, we are “nationalized” and lose our freedoms, all rights, and democracy, perhaps the voters will see the error of their ways. This man frightens me beyond comprehension. He is basically a Chicago street thug politician; he needs 300 advisors to make a decision (sort of) and he has no cohertent programs….only promises. His liberal Pol Pals will destroy our capitalistic system and what remains of our economy. Shame on the voters, and God help us all.
Nov 24, 2008 - 5:46 am 11. Sarah:I’ve been calling Chris Matthews an idiot since I was 13 years old! The man is so in love with the sound of his own voice that he’ll demand to have reruns of his show played at his own funeral. He wants to be in the big leagues so bad he can taste it but it’s quite obvious that he has neither the balls nor the brains for that to ever come about.
Nov 24, 2008 - 5:47 am 12. bankruptcy:Take heart, he’s already shot himself in the foot sometimes it just takes a little while for the hemorageing to start and I, for one, will be the first in line to wish his ridiculously pandering “Idiotball” show a quick death.

Nov 24, 2008 - 6:59 am 19. Dr. Lumplevin:That’s the difference between you Right-wingers and we Progressives – we understand a fundamental, truth about the world that you don’t – that there is no truth. That is why we don’t seek to be objective anymore – there is no objectivity, especially in journalism.
If Chris Matthews and the rest of the Media wants to continue believing and promoting that Pres.-elect Obama is a transcendental avatar sent from another planet to save the human race from free-enetrprise and Conservatism, that is their right of free speech, as was stated in another comment. I for one will defend the new subjective, creative journalism, that rather reporting boring, uncomfortable facts, seeks to create an entirely new, better world. I am weary of this world anyway.
And while I am not a religious person, I also defend their right to belive in whatever god they wish to.

Nov 24, 2008 - 7:14 am 22. John O'Neill:The basic thing to remember about Chris Mathews is that he is a product of the Philadelphia Democrat machine; one of the most corrupt and thuggish in the country. Mathews idea of political discourse is yelling and spewing at anyone who does not accept his opinion. He learned this on the streets of Philadelphia where Democrat union thugs use threats of breaking legs and beatings to keep their political power. Even his prep school background does not disguise his lack of intelligence and and propensity to get into your face.
Nov 24, 2008 - 7:15 am 23. AnninCA:They all scream, John. Even Meet the Press. I wouldn’t watch any of those shows due to the lack of basic courtesies shown to one another. It’s devolved into nothing more than immature behavior on most of the political talk shoes. Why people watch ala Jerry Springer type shows is beyond me, but they seem to like it.
Nov 24, 2008 - 7:20 am 24. SCOOTER:Watching and listening to what Chris Mathews says is like watching a jackass braying…. nothing unusual, lots of noise, saying nothing important except to other jackasses. With Obama it’s just a matter of time when his adoring kool-aid drinkers get buyer’s remorse for not getting what was promised. Public pressure should be exerted on resolving Obama’s birth certificate issue in the US Supreme Court. And, there’s still the Clinton influence on the political environment… what surprises will they have for Obama? The danger is on how will we come out on the other side of four years?
Nov 24, 2008 - 7:20 am 25. Tex Taylor:As blatantly unobjective as Chrissie Matthews is, Chrissie is like listening to Mother Theresa when compared with the flunkie from ESPN, masquerading as a journalist, flaccid Keith Olbermann.
If there is a bigger bore in media, somebody would have a hard time proving it to me.
Nov 24, 2008 - 7:38 am 26. Mike:Bill Clinton exposed his inner political philosophy when he uttered ‘When is is, is’ in perfect Hegelese. Nov 24, 2008 - 8:23 am 28. J D Everyman:Matthews was once described by a real journalist as having a mind a yard wide & sixteenth-inch deep, to which I would add it’s below sidewalk level.
Why should a candidate for a senate seat have his own program? That’s reason enough to bring back the ‘fairness doctrine’.
Nov 24, 2008 - 8:24 am 29. marsta:“The basic thing to remember about Chris Mathews is that he is a product of the Philadelphia Democrat machine; one of the most corrupt and thuggish in the country.”
That’s saying alot considering the corrupt and thuggish Democratic machines in Boston, New York (Bloomberg noted), Newark, Washington, DC, Brevard County, FL; Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, to name a few. You’ll notice that just about all those cities are mismanaged and will probably require a bailout sometime in the future.
And of course there is Chicago, from which sprang our President-elect. How is a Democrat about to hold the office of dog catcher, much less the ultimate office in the land? Oh yeah, the Republicans are just as bad…

Still a free country and he can say what he wants. Don’t listen and vote with your feet, ears etc.
The WSJ has presented a pretty fair view of life and is thriving. The NYT which is just as biased as Chris Mathews and perhaps more dangerous just cut its dividend and looses more money and circulation every quarter.
I don’t like either and boycott both.

Nov 24, 2008 - 10:37 am 36. momof3:I, like most Americans, thought the witch hunt of the Repubs against Clinton was a ridiculous waste of money. They did not help themselves at all. I also, unlike most americans unfortunately, went republican this election and don’t plan to go back. I’ll take repressed sinners obsessing about someone’s sex life over socialists taking over the country any day.
If there’s media worth watching, I haven’t found it in years. I must say I find it comforting that Obama’s reduxing the Cinton years. They were a known quantity and can be survived. A truly change-filled socialist group could well have taken us down as a country.
The citibank thing makes me want to fire the first shot in the revolution. And who helped Citibank and Co GET their bankruptcy laws? Good old Biden, lord love him. Boy, can the voters pick ‘em or what?

This year we have a unique opportunity to send GE a message about just how displeased we are with MSNBC’s flagrantly biased election coverage. When you’re out Christmas shopping, make it a point to walk right past the GE refrigerators, electric ranges, dishwashers, washers, dryers, microwaves, digital cameras, cordless phones, water purifiers, and lighting products. Nov 24, 2008 - 12:45 pm 41. Dustin C.:The funny part of people and their comments about the economy… Bush’s 8 years in office had far higher economic numbers, and FAR higher stock market values throughout his administration than Clinton did during his 8 years of office. And Bush’s administration with the economy even had to deal with a terrorist attack that occurred from the entire planning process taking place during most of Clinton’s administration.
And don’t say that Clinton’s great years just trickled over and continued with Bush. If that’s the case, then the spiking of the stock market began during Reagan’s administration and continued with the first Bush…. Clinton was not responsible for any of that, except pushing through the bill that eventually led to the mortgage collapse.

As far as Clinton …he did a shameful thing as our President. He had a record which continues to this day of sexual misconduct and not being faithful to his wife. Some in here defend Clinton’s actions. Just shows that some in society have lost all their moral value which made this country great. When that type of act especially by our President in the Whitehouse and with a young intern it should be totally unacceptable by ALL people. To defend his actions is to say alot about yourself.

Chris Matthews is not only irrelavant, he is a classic example of why the media in this country need to be reigned in. Please folks….quit trying to kill a flea with an elephant gun. Look at Mcain…he is back to his old life…I suggest you do the same before you destroy yourselves and families with hate…I am waiting for a computer wiz to make sure that you have to show your face online to make a comment and then we will see who hates in our neighbourhoods and pretend to be nice in person..man that would be something…so you great minds out there invent something

Nov 24, 2008 - 3:35 pm 55. Bobby:Jimme and Kevin above comments are totally 100% correct…thanks it’s good to know some feel like I do. The liberals are ruining this great country. As far as Barney Frank and Chris Dodd both need to be put in prison for criminal neglect ..they not only did nothing to protect us but they went along for the ride and accepted hush money all the time telling us everything was OK …guess who got money from Fannie and Freddie in order was 1 Chris Dodd, 2 Obama, 3 Barney Frank those are the facts…Lets keep the libs happy and keeping loaning money to people that have no means nor a record of paying their debt. Irresponsible behavior by irresponsible people and noi one holds anyone accountable for their actions.
Nov 24, 2008 - 3:42 pm 56. John D.:Why can’t the Democrats have a some media people on their side? The Republicans have all of the FOX people on theirs. This really is a non issue. Who is Hannity and O’Reily blubbering over now?
Nov 24, 2008 - 3:51 pm 57. April VanHamme:During those dreadful final Clinton years while cowering-hoping we had come to the end of the bimbo-trail and the spotted blue dress…we ALL were happy to hear a voice of truth. Chris Matthews had some integrity and many of us (conservatives) appreciated his honesty. It seems the MSM were joyously willing to give up all credibility when it came to Obama. I for one sincerely hope his contribution to the next four years will be able to redeem him in the eyes of Americans who feel cheated by the media. We really have no idea who this man is and what he stands for-oh yes, change and hope. But change for whom and hope for whom? I used to watch Chris Matthews, but he is now no different than Rush Limbaugh. He has no independent credibility as a newsperson. So those who are liberals will tune in to hear Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman and Catie Couric, et al. Who is out there with an independent voice, just reporting the facts? No one. At least we used to be able to get some independent news from the BBC, but they are in the tank for Obama, too.
Nov 24, 2008 - 4:09 pm 58. greg:Please know that there are some Americans out there who can still read the facts and interpret the news all by themselves. Not ALL of us are brain dead.
where are all you conservative crybabies while Hannity, Van Stuttering Mumbling Susteren, and Limbaugh spew their filth for hours on end on Radio and Faux, er Fox news??
Nov 24, 2008 - 4:12 pm 59. Dennis S.:When Chris Matthews talks about Obama it reminds me of an 11 YO boy at his first slow dance with a girl. The knees shaking with anticipation and the look of pure adulation on his face. I suggest that his producers makes him take a cold shower before they let him talk about Obama.
Nov 24, 2008 - 4:58 pm 60. Amused:I just love blogs. The comments start out fairly adult and well composed and then someone disagrees with someone and the hardly controlled invective begins. Degenerating into immature ranting. Sort of reminds me of MSN.
Nov 24, 2008 - 4:59 pm 61. Rhein Gold:Matthews is a joke. I’m exercising my constitutional right by refusing to watch, listen or read anything that moron has to say. Someday Matthews will discover that his honeymoon with himself is over. Then he’ll wake up and realize what a cheap date he really is.
Nov 24, 2008 - 5:50 pm 62. Dennis S.:Between Larry King and Chris Matthews I cannot figure out who was more pathetic when they were gushing about Obama. Also Greg, I would not make any comments about Greta van Sustern. Whenever I hear Barbara Walters destroy the theory of inunciation I can’t even understand how she passed 3rd grade grammer..
Nov 24, 2008 - 6:04 pm 63. Lee-Missouri Ozarks:Kyle-Anne: What a great take on Matthews the Magnificent.
What does Matthews do for an encore? You can make book that in his egocentric eyes, he, aided by his fellow “journalist” admirers, put BO in the White House. His individual contribution of disgusting political lasciviousness is unparalleled in my experience. If he opened his suitcoat he would be arrested for indecent exposure.
The sad truth is that this man who was once a feared guru of talk television is today the recipient of open derision, the renouned “man with the tingling leg”. What a farce.
I am with you Kyle-Anne, this “change and hope” administration should provide more comedy than has been seen in WDC for a long time. I can hardly wait for the first confrontation between the new Secretary of State and the current “wanna be” SecState one Nancy Pelosi. Remember folks, almost her first official act upon becoming Speaker of the House was to commit treason in the form of an unauthorized trip to meet with the ruler of Syria.
Between the resurrected Clintonistas and the “steeped in buffoonery” congress this could be very funny if it weren’t being played against a background of financial crisis of unparalleled severity. This crises having been created and covered up by many of the very “buffoons” who could provide the comedy.
I have to believe there will be moments of truly great comedy, particlarly when you throw the irrepressible Michelle O into the mix.

Are you serious? Matthews is harmless because you know his bias! He’s open about it. He is very clear that he’s speaking to liberals. What disturbs me is an organization like Fox News that claims that they are “fair and balance”, when any college-educated person can tell that they are no such thing.
Fox is the conservative network. People on PJMedia admit that freely. And yet Fox claims that they are centrist. That’s the real danger – when you have to critically evaluate a source – a feat few are willing to attempt.
You know someone is closed-minded when they pick petty fights with their own party loyalists.
Nov 24, 2008 - 6:34 pm 65. thegr8_1:Alan Colmes is leaving Hannity&Colmes at the end of the year. Matthews do you have the b@lls to take his place? I didn’t think so you useless pile of cr@p.
Nov 24, 2008 - 6:52 pm 66. LisaP:The MSM, ACORN, and $600 million in untraceable foreign campaign donations conspired to affirmatively action Barack Obama, community organizer extraordinaire, into the highest office in the world. Hence, instead of feeling buoyantly proud of my country for finally electing a black man as president, I feel somewhat sad and a bit frightened at the widespread general ignorance of the American electorate. I wish us luck nevertheless…
Nov 24, 2008 - 9:22 pm 67. Rachel Peepers:Nicely written piece on perhaps the lowest form of media scum ever to descend to such heights of incompetence and untruthfulness. A pitiful creature of the loon left, the poster child for media deceit and bias, Chris Matthews cannot be trusted to take out the garbage.
Nov 24, 2008 - 10:58 pm 68. buffy:show should be called Lowball or No****
Nov 24, 2008 - 11:43 pm 69. Pamela:Word on the street is that Matthews is thinking about running against Spector. That should be fun.
Nov 25, 2008 - 2:45 am 70. Reality:Right on LisaP. Is it not strange that the same people who spewed hatred for President Bush for eight years is now upset that the right speaks out against Berry. Let me make myself clear.
I feel the same way about Berry Obama as you felt about President Bush, and I don’t see that “changing” anytime soon. By the end of his term (that is four short years). I am sure that Americans will know the real Obama!

“Fox is the conservative network. People on PJMedia admit that freely. And yet Fox claims that they are centrist. That’s the real danger – when you have to critically evaluate a source – a feat few are willing to attempt.”
I call BS!!! Fox is no more conservative than George W. Bush…and we all no he’s no conservative. The problem you have is PERSPECTIVE. The rest of the MSM is so far left that Fox APPEARS to be conservative when, in fact, Fox is, as they claim, fair and balanced.
Compare O’Reilly to Olbermann. Olbermann NEVER knowingly has an opposing point of view on his show and, if they do contradict his raving opinions, you never see them on his show again. Bill O., on the other hand, has more opposing views on his show than both Matthews and Olberman combined.
You can’t say that Sheppard Smith is a conservative by any stretch of the imagination. An analysis of political contributions by the Fox News personnel showed that they donated heavily to democRAT candidates.
Hannity and Colmes is as balanced a show as any I have ever seen. They always have liberals and conservatives on.
Anyway, Kyle-Anne, nice job again. This will either be the most entertaining four years of our lifetimes or it will be the beginning of an intractible slide into the dustbin of history. The election of this poser as president is indeed a sad chapter in our glorious history. Pray, people. Pray!!!!
Nov 25, 2008 - 12:45 pm 72. Jarhead68:Oh, and one more thing…WHERE’S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE????
I’m no conspiracty theorist but isn’t it rather strange that The Fraudulent One has not just shown us the REAL birth certificate to end the doubt? Would you?
He may be a fraud of more epic proportions that anyone can actually fathom. Except for intellectual giants such as Kyle-Anne and moi. LOL.
Let’s take back our schools from the NEA. They have done irrevocable harm to our young people in the past 3 decades.
Nov 25, 2008 - 12:50 pm 73. Jarhead68:Obviously a bad typist though…CONSPIRACY…damn.
Nov 25, 2008 - 12:51 pm 74. The Whale:Matthews is what he has always been, a gas bag Hack who likes to Verbally assault anyone who doesn’t toe the party line.
Nov 25, 2008 - 1:59 pm 75. Someone75:Jarhead68:
Umm . . Hannity is your idea of balanced? Wow. I can’t imagine seeing the world as you must – with my head in the sand. Hannity is a bully just like O’Reilly. Hannity is one of the most transparently partisan commentators that I’ve ever seen.
I don’t even know why I’m debating this with you. You’re own conservative buddies agree with me! They’ve said so. Fox = news for conservatives.
Nov 25, 2008 - 9:06 pm 76. vivo:Final judgment:
Olbermann: liberal, truthful, demolishes right-wingers.
O’Reilly: conservative, stirs controversy to make big bucks.
Fox: right-wing, lies, more lies, smears, pathetic.
Rachel Maddow: liberal, truthful, on target.
CNN: centrist, news.
Hardball: centrist, loud.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Turkey and football.
