Conservatives, Rejoice: Obama Did the ‘Wright’ Thing

A young, strong black leader has finally denounced the aging charlatans who promote a poisonous culture of blame-whitey victimization.

May 1, 2008 - by Brendan Loy

Barack Obama had his “Sister Souljah Moment” Tuesday, as he at last fully distanced himself from his former pastor, the Wrong Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose fanatical and fantastical views have badly damaged Obama’s campaign and punctured his image as a transcendent “uniter.”

Obama professed himself “outraged” and “saddened” by Wright’s conspiratorial ravings, which, the senator said, “were not only divisive and destructive,” but give “comfort to those who prey on hate.”

Now, conservatives have long argued that the black community is desperately in need of a leader who speaks out forcefully against the divisive, destructive worldview of “those who prey on hate” — the worldview of Wright, Sharpton and Jackson, of the race-baiters and the grievance-mongers. Why, conservatives have often asked, won’t somebody, anybody, take on the entrenched “old guard” of African-American political life, the aging charlatans whose continued relevance depends on perpetuating a poisonous culture of blame-whitey victimization?

Well, now it has happened. Barack Obama, a man who commands overwhelming support among African-Americans, and who stands a fair chance of becoming the next President of the United States, used the bully pulpit of his candidacy to unequivocally condemn the very sort of conspiratorial lunacy that is too often tolerated or even applauded within segments of the black community. This is exactly the development that so many conservatives have supposedly been yearning for. At last, a widely respected black political figure on the national stage, telling it like it is! As I wrote on my blog, “This is the promise of the Obama candidacy, encapsulated and made real.”

Yet the reaction to on the right Obama’s speech was something between a yawn and a sneer. “Too little, too late,” wrote Glenn Reynolds. “It doesn’t address questions of judgment at all to finally act after being backed into a corner,” opined Ed Morrissey. “After 20 years of friendship, if Obama didn’t know Wright held these beliefs he’s a moron and if he did know he’s a fraud,” declared Allahpundit.

These are all valid points, if somewhat snarkily expressed. Obama clearly has not handled this controversy as well or as speedily as he might have, and there are many unanswered questions. Chief among them: what did the senator know, and when did he know it? Also, relatedly: what exactly changed his mind between March 18 and April 29?

Those are genuine mysteries, because the purely cynical answers don’t make much more sense than the purely credulous ones do. On the one hand, it’s hard to believe that Obama knew nothing about Wright’s repugnant beliefs for 20 years, and that even as of last month he still knew so little that he honestly thought those YouTube clips were purely isolated incidents taken out of context. On the other hand, it’s hard to believe that Obama knew everything about Wright all along, yet chose not to cut ties because he somehow didn’t recognize that Wright was a massive political liability. Say what you will about Barack Obama, but he is not a stupid man. Anyone who knew, months or years ago, what we all know now about Wright, would recognize that the reverend was very likely to eventually become a huge political problem in an Obama presidential campaign.

Perhaps the bigger question, though, is whether Obama’s critics are missing the forest for the trees in their commentary on his “divorce” from Reverend Wright. No matter the wicked, twisted road that got him here, the fact is that Obama has now joined the battle against the conspiratorial victimhood complex of Jeremiah Wright and his ilk. He may not be the fiercest warrior in this struggle — he hasn’t denounced Sharpton and Jackson, nor started talking like Bill Cosby — but at least he’s fighting for the right team.

Inevitably, some question Obama’s motives. Personally, I believe Obama’s actions can be understood without resort to cynicism if one views him as a human being first and a politician second. But even if his conversion is one of pure convenience, that’s arguably almost as good as a genuine change of heart, because he’s unlikely to “convert” back. Obama must now stand his ground for the same pragmatic reasons that (under this theory) spurred him to disown Wright in the first place –particularly because he’s already being accused of vacillation and weakness, and thus can hardly afford to engage in further waffling. If anything, he will probably need to strengthen his position further in the coming months, to become a bit more vocal in his criticism of Wright & Co.

In short, whatever his unknowable inner motives might be, Obama now needs to be seen as an “anti-Wright.” And that means he now finds himself positioned to potentially become the most effective spokesman against the Wright-Sharpton-Jackson axis that this country has ever seen. If Obama turns his considerable rhetorical skill to consistently condemning the race-baiting brigades –and if he is able to bring his massive numbers of black supporters along for the ride– he can do an enormous amount of good. As a scout for last weekend’s NFL Draft might say, he has a tremendous “upside” potential.

Can those who truly care about moving past the endless rehashing of grievances old and new, real and imagined, toward a more constructive approach to race relations in this country, really afford to tear down the man who could help them win this battle? Particularly when, in so doing, they’ll be unintentionally allying themselves with the very grievance-mongers they abhor, who will now want Obama to fail for very different reasons?

This latter point is crucial. Although the other shoe has not yet dropped, there will undoubtedly be a backlash against Obama’s remarks from Wright and others who share his worldview. There may even be a price to pay at the polls, as Morrissey suggested: “Obama may still find himself in trouble with his own base of African-American voters, who may not appreciate the political imperative of throwing Wright under the bus.” It should go without saying that the “black community” is not a monolith, and the views of Wright & Co. are by no means representative of “African-American voters” in general. Yet demagoguery is a powerful thing, no matter the audience. Hence, the potential backlash matters.

For Wright himself, of course, this controversy is personal, as the New York Post reported today. But it’s more than that. For those who, like Wright, see everything through the prism of white racism and black victimization, Obama represents a grave threat to their power. If he wins the presidency, it will be much harder for these charlatans to ply their trade.

Wright reportedly told Obama that “if you get elected, November the 5th, I’m coming after you, because you’ll be representing a government whose policies grind under people.” But surely Wright knows that the power of his message would be diminished in that event. His false vision of America as a fundamentally, unalterably racist nation –rather than a nation with pockets and instances of racism, but one that is genuinely working toward wiping out the vestiges of prejudice and discrimination– would be severely undermined by the specter of a black man in the White House.

It is therefore unquestionably in the personal best interests of Wright and his ideological and theological fellow-travelers for Obama to lose. All the better if he is perceived as losing because of a racially charged controversy. Then, especially, Wright & Co. can comfortably blame white racism for his defeat, preach that he never should have “betrayed” them, and return to business as usual, fighting again and again the battles of the 1960s as if nothing has changed since Martin Luther King dreamed his dream.

Such a result should be anathema to conservatives. Yet by continuing to harp on the Wright controversy, they may help bring it about. If Obama is torn apart by a two-front assault, with the left’s grievance-mongers arguing that his condemnations of Wright are an act of betrayal while the right’s harumphers dismiss the condemnations as tardy and insincere, it could set back the larger battle against “those who prey on hate” for a very long time. The takeaway lesson from such an event, rightly or wrongly, would be that no black candidate — not even one as talented as Obama, with his rhetorical skill, his fundraising prowess, and his almost cult-like, “post-racial” appeal — can successfully walk the necessary tightrope to succeed in racially charged America.

Now, admittedly, we’re in the midst of a presidential election, and conservatives can hardly be expected to rally to Obama’s defense. They want him to lose, for reasons entirely unrelated to this issue. I certainly am not suggesting that the right is somehow obligated to support Obama for president just because of his conversion vis a vis Wright. Still less am I suggesting that those who oppose Obama are therefore opposed to racial progress. Barack Obama is not some sort of post-racial messiah; he is a mere mortal, and if he loses, that by itself will not doom race relations in this country.

But it matters how he loses. If Obama loses because the American people reject his policy views, or because they view him as unready to be Commander-in-Chief, or because they consider him an elitist, out-of-touch, far-left liberal, that would be an unalloyed victory for the political right, with minimal impact on race relations. But if, in the immediate aftermath of Obama’s better-late-than-never decision to rightly divorce himself from Wright’s poison, this controversy sends Obama’s campaign into a death spiral and dooms his chances in November, the collateral damage could go far beyond just this election and just this candidate.

That’s why it’s so distressing to see, for instance, Allahpundit rooting for Reverend Wright to play the victim card and damage Obama further. This is the height of cynicism and hypocrisy. Wright is diametrically opposed to everything conservatives believe in. Do they really want him to play a starring role in their victory?

Obama’s critics are asking legitimate questions about the Wright sideshow. But they need to consider how important those questions really are, in the big picture. Obama is doing the right thing, and that should not be ignored or dismissed. As I wrote on my blog, “Conservatives ought not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. That’s liberals’ job!”

It would be far easier to stomach criticism from the right if it were to explicitly acknowledge the positive step Obama has taken, while suggesting that he needs to take it even further. “You’ve disowned Wright; now what about Sharpton?” That would advance the cause that conservatives believe in. Obsessing over the timing of Obama’s statement, on the other hand, arguably misses the point.

The bottom line is this. From a conservative’s perspective, there are plenty of reasons Barack Obama should lose the presidency. The fact that he finally did the right thing and disowned Jeremiah Wright is not one of them.

It’s painfully obvious:

1. Obama needed Wright’s support to be elected early in his political career.
2. He knew of Wright’s racist positions — twenty years went by.
3. He has counted on the MSM to accept what he says about the situation — and may still get away with it.
4. The “he can’t be that stupid” argument is naive. History is filled with the bad decisions of very smart people: Napoleon entered Russia in the winter; Nixon obstructed justice in Watergate; Bill Clinton lied under oath, etc.

It is natural and necessary that in a democratic country every citizen has the possibility to express his thoughts. But no democracy can transform an idiot in an intelligent being, and when an absolutely perverse guy like Rev. Wright speaks before a public that greets and applauds him, that is not a democracy, but an idiots-cracy.

I just don’t get it. How can you keep calling this man black? He is not black. I’ll say it again and maybe this thime it will sink in. obama is not black. He is 1/2 white & 1/2 black. Or if you prefer, he is 1/2 black & 1/2 white. Either way, being black is a choice with him. It is an aspect that he choose in order to use the race card from the get go. None of this is real and I just can not figure out why you and everyone else swallow this malarky hook, line and sinker. obama is not black. He is a mix. I’ll say that again for you too, obama is a mix of black and white. That does not make him black no more than it doesn’t make him white. Why do you continue to give him a free pass when the guy can’t even be honest about what race he is?

I must take exception with this statement:
“if one views him as a human being first and a politician second”
Politicians are becoming their own sub-species in our culture, and Obama is a politician first and foremost as is Hillary and most of Congress. I don’t relish our choices this fall, but at least McCain offers a glimmer of hope that he may do the right thing more often than not.
Only when the politically expedient aligns with the ‘good of the country’, as in this case, will we see progress on any front until we wake up and demand more of those we elect.

May 1, 2008 - 4:39 am 6. RE:

Someone needs to introduce Mr. Loy to the concept of sincerity – how it can the reinforce or negate the uttered word.

There is a big difference between doing something because you have to do it and doing something because it is the right thing to do. Obama, unwilling to subordinate his own personal ambition, was forced to do the ‘right’ thing. There is nothing honorable or commendable about Obama’s behaviour in this matter.

Obama deserves credit for absolutely nothing. It’s clear that his political career should have peaked at state representative, but the unseriousness of the Democrat party has propelled him far beyond his capabilities – and into the ranks of those Democrats who are in way over their heads – like Reid, Peolsi, and Dean.

I do agree that it’s time to leave the Wright behind for now. We should now move on to discussing Rezko… or Ayers… or his voting record. Wright is not an anomoly in Obama’s judgment. That will become increasingly clear to the general public as this campaign drags on.

Percentages of color are meaningless depending on the audience (as in “Too Black, or Too White”). The real problem that is being missed here is the pattern of response Mr Obama has revealed. Through debate and his responses to small crises he has drawn a picture of someone loathe to respond to anything but the most obvious threat, and then that response begins very passively. In one of the debates he was asked how he would respond to another 9/11 situation; (I paraphrase) first he would make sure the responders had all they needed, Hillary said she would hunt down the perpetrators . . . Passive vs Active.

Mrs Clinton was right in the O’Reilly interview when she said he “waited too long”, I would illuminate that still further by saying his terms (though strong) were not decisive enough. Diplomacy is great when you deal with opponents with intelligence and commitment to good faith, useless when dealing with the absolute self absorbed and the implacable. Mr. Obama should not just disavow/disown/expunge Mr. Wright, he should say the same for any who buy into this purveyor of blood libel’s line, as in: “And if you believe the distortions, and lies Mr. Wright espouses . . . I don’t want or need your support” either.

But he is not strong enough.

Now that the dust has settled and we can see the trees in the forest of media spin and soundbites it would appear that all the negative energy spent by the kitchen sink strategy department has fizzled out and the wreck a candidate campaign truck has an engine blow out and had to stop in the pits for a complete engine overhaul.Well it’s just too late because the Barak political racing machine is just warming up and going into high revs and looks like the finishing line is just around the corner and the race will soon be over with a triumphant winner and one sorry sore loser.
Reality check up on streetwise politics says the word on the street is that Hillary may have done Barak a big favour on the O’Reilly factor Interview because most sitting on the fence voters can see clearly now. They can see media frenzy tried to hoodwink them that it was over for Barak. But it ain’t over. On Friday it will be over. Barak will have won by a margin of
17%.”So who is a fooling a who?” as some wise song writer sang.Looks like the shoe is on the other foot. That’s right. What goes around comes around. A new day is dawning. Time for a breath of fresh air. Watch the press for details of the BARAK OBAMA LANDSLIDE VICTORY, next week. Errol Smythe

What drivel. This type of, ahem, analysis, is almost as bad as the Libs arrogant boilerplate self-deceptions. Rejoicing at the coming home of the prodigal son Obama to the world of reality and sanity presumes that he has, in fact, come home. I believe this prodigal son is only making a short visit home to reality world and, when he sees no more to be gained from his short redemption tour home, he will go back to the standard class/race warfare rhetoric his fanatically devoted fans – victims all – so crave.

“If he wins the presidency, it will be much harder for these charlatans to ply their trade.”

Nothing could be further from the truth. The grievance industry is fed primarily from the hands of guilty white Liberals and the black grievance mongers are only cashing in on the myths created and perpetuated by the guilty white elites. The grievance industry will continue to flourish as long as those guilty white elites see themselves as “saviours” of societies losers from the hands of their successful (and therefore evil) white bretheren. It is foolish to expect the guilty white elites in media, academia and politics to give up their cherished self-important role as saviours of the class/race struggle.

“All the better if he is perceived as losing because of a racially charged controversy. Such a result should be anathema to conservatives. Yet by continuing to harp on the Wright controversy, they may help bring it about.”

Once again, the author presumes that crafting the Republican/conservative response to the Obama/Wright debacle to fit within the Liberal framework and not pursue the mess any further will deny the Libs and race baiters a platform to continue to do what they always do, and that is a foolish assumption. Lib media and politicians WILL do what they always do regardless of how the Republicans “craft” their response. Calculating conservative responses by first figuring in how the Libs will package it goes to the core of the current republican/conservative difficulties. Playing by the Lib rules and following the Lib playbook is neither wise nor clever, it is feckless and gutless. Conservatives are disgusted with a leadership that has capitulated to the Libs and no longer tries to even give voice to the conservative perspective. Telling conservatives to keep quiet or craft their criticisms and arguments to fit into the Liberal framework because of how Libs will spin it is advice that is beneath contempt.

Brendan Loy’s points are worth considering. However, the problem not discussed is: Will conservatives give Obama a pass as Loy suggests, knowing that this gives the Democratic Party – and blacks voting as virtually a monolith – the extra oomph necessary to win in November? Because, as it is, Obama is getting a lift to office largely based on race.

Is the prospective racial healing envisioned by Loy a sufficiently important benefit to accept the downsides of electing what would be the most Liberal president in America’s history, creating its own long-term disasters (like on the SCOTUS, controlling all three branches, etc.).

To give Obama a pass is to overlook the underlying issues, of Obama’s judgment and experience and mental-model. It is also dishonest, as he is being dishonest.

The price is too high.

May 1, 2008 - 6:19 am 11. huxley:

It’s certainly true that Obama’s inner motives are “genuine mysteries” and “unknowable.” I don’t like that much when selecting someone to be the leader of the free world.

If Obama turns his considerable rhetorical skill to consistently condemning the race-baiting brigades…

Not much comfort there. We have seen that it takes considerable amount of pressure and even outrage to push Obama past all his footdragging to finally do the “Wright” thing, and only with respect to Wright, and still with half-truths and incomplete explanations.

Yet the takeaway from the piece is that the moral onus is on conservatives to behave properly with respect to Obama–and this from an Obama supporter, though he doesn’t advertise the fact.

May 1, 2008 - 6:37 am 12. Ardsgaine:

McCain cannot govern simply as the non-Obama. He has to present a positive case for his policies and get the people to sign up for them. A vote against Obama, even if it is a landslide, will not be a mandate for anything, except not sitting in church with religious fanatics. That’s not going to be helpful when McCain goes to Congress to advance legislation.

That’s why this constant harping on Wright is such a waste of time. If the time were spent instead on highlighting Obama’s socialist agenda, and attacking that, then when he lost it would serve as a guide to what kind of policies people do not want. If it is effective, it would also serve to shift McCain away from some of his more socialist positions.

What I see in this obsessive focus on Wright is a party that no longer has a coherent set of economic ideas for which it is capable of arguing. So long as the extreme crazies of the religious right are kept in a lockbox, the Republicans think they can win the Culture War. In the meantime, the country’s economic system is falling apart, and they have gone AWOL in the battle for capitalism.

This article is a true head scratcher. It misses the entire point. This isn’t about liberal-conservative. This is about Barack Obama’s values and judgment. Why would anyone of ANY ideology (other than black separatism) countenance the opinions of Reverend Wright for twenty years? Liberal… conservative… pheh! This is about Barack Obama being completely expedient for his own ends, overlooking what was in front of his face in order to get elected. Anyone who does that — no matter what his ideology — should not get elected President of the United States. For OBama this is about character (not about race) and he has shown himself to have none.

Thank you. Happy to read I’m not the only optimist left on the planet. Obama sitting in the captains chair immediately diminishes the power and money making ability of Rev Al, Rev Wight and Jesse. To bad Obama is a Harvard lawyer ( is, is- mentality ) and has proven already to work well (20yrs) with race baiters like Rev Wright. With that said, there’s still no chance Obama will reach a détente with Rev Wright, Rev Jackson & Rev Sharpton. But if he does, because I’m an optimist, I can see it now. Three reserved parking spots at the White House. President Obama and the three reverends joining hands for morning services in the Oval Office. Praying for reconciliation and to move forward from the past. Three reverends begging forgiveness for all the hate they’ve been spreading & using to gain political power and money. That’ll happen because Obama’s “says he’s a uniter” and you can take that to the bank. Same as they’ve been doing all these years.

Bottom line is, I just realized I need to upgrade myself to “cockeyed optimist”.

May 1, 2008 - 7:08 am 16. Aglifter:

The author has clearly chosen a path (I like Obama), and then chosen a reasoning to justify BHO’s 20 year association w. a second rate imitation of a NAZI — “he’s reborn” etc. You want a black leader who can change things, they’re around, but they’re doing things — Clarance Thomas and Condi Rice are prime examples — as are many, many others — but they haven’t made a career of being black. They’ve made a career of being lawyers, doctors, businessmen, etc.

BHO isn’t the messiah, but he is a consumate politician, who specializes in selling a wonderful sounding delusion, provided you’re willing to give up rational thought.

Ignore the titles “Progressive” and “Communist” and start comparing key phrases from HRC’s and BHO’s speeches w. an English translation of Marx… It’s the same idea. And, the same one that has failed miserably every time it’s been tried. It sounds wonderful, but it doesn’t work. Monarchy, and Theocracy sound wonderful as well, but also don’t work.

What has made America unique, and allowed us to create an astonishing standard of life for ourselves, is that we went w. the rights of the individual, including the right to property.

A prime example of this would be to compare Texas and Mexico. Circa 1836, Mexico was a wealthy nation, well populated, w. lots of natural resources, and prime agricultural land, under a military dictator. There was a revolt in a poor territory w. almost no natural resources, by Mexican citizens demanding their rights under the Mexican constitution of 1824, following years of abuses, and attempts to get Santa Anna to recognize trial by jury, etc.

In the following years, both countries develop, but TX far outstrips Mexico in progress, despite starting far behind, and having far fewer resources.

Now part of the US, and, as such, losing it’s dedication to the freedom of the individual, it’s slowing down, and the rest of the world, including Mexico, is starting to catch up, as they’ve embraced individual property rights for a larger section of the population. (Mexico still has “peons”, and “dons” but there are middle class property owners now.)

Living through the sadly continuing era of Jackson, Sharpton, Leonard Jeffries, Herbert Daughtry (another Reverend!) et al, if Obama had taken the anti-blame whitey stance and made it a central pillar of his candidacy, even I would have supported him hands down. Too bad…..

May 1, 2008 - 7:41 am 21. ajacksonian:

So, when all the bad and hurtful choices to him and the Nation are removed, Barack Obama can finally back the right choice in a half-hearted way? Isn’t *that* a wonderful personality to have as President!

I do happen to remember the *previous* speech he gave on Wright way back in March and *he* was the one casting it as a ‘race issue’ when it was a ‘character issue’ for the candidate. He missed that chance by a long shot as he could not understand that to be a ‘change candidate’ one must be willing to sacrifice and change *themselves first* and he would not do so. He could have batted that one out of the field and demonstrated character, integrity, humility in having made very bad decisions and, then, having recognized that his own actions were *part of the problem* vow to change himself and work for that even if he did not win the race or the Presidency.

I didn’t hear those words from his mouth then or now.

If he can’t recognize that such ties *at home* are lethal to ‘change dialogue’, then it is no wonder he can’t figure out why Ayers, Rezko, Auchi, Khalidi, et. al. just aren’t appreciated in the rest of the nation and actually might be a problem when trying to get ‘change’. Those individuals and the organizations they are connected to do not represent any ‘healing’: they are gangsters, terrorist sympathizers, terrorists, and one of the most well connected individuals in organized crime and terrorism walking around the planet. If Obama can’t recognize Wright as a problem and having associated with him for 20 years, then what, exactly, will he do with individuals with far more connections and much further out of reach than Wright?

These are not ’soft problems’ like ‘addressing racism’ but hard ones of people who are aiding and abetting those wishing no good to our country. So, for a man who runs on ‘character and judgement’ as his main reasons to have people vote for him, when he fails at *those* then why, exactly, should people consider voting for him? He has failed on the exact, same things he considers his strengths, which is a poor thing to see in a politician or a man.

He wants to be judged on those things?

So be it.

May 1, 2008 - 7:44 am 22. Andrew:

Great article. Dark Helmet, Obama is black. No matter what your math tells you it can’t overcome hundreds of years of society’s definition of what a black man is. Your argument about him not be trustworthy because he is lying about his race is ridiculous. You think he is hiding behind his black facade while you hide behind screen names for your idiotic ideas and posts? Give me a break.

May 1, 2008 - 7:53 am 23. Dark Helmet:

Andrew,

You suffer from assumptions. obama is not black. For you to say that he is, simply demonstrates that you are one, of millions, who dismiss the obvious out of hand. Doing so does not change the reality on the ground and in fact, that tunnel vision is what keeps many of you from being able to address the matter rather than be spoon fed what to think by party lines.

There in lies the fault with you’re lack of basic reality skills in coming to a fact based conclusion.

This is like trying to teach the pig to sing, but here goes…

1st. It is not ‘my math’. It is in fact, Andrew ‘The Math’.

1 black father and 1 white mother do not a black man make.

2. My statement, it is not an argument as it is not debatable, it is what it is. obama has pandered to the blacks as a black man. The day he steps up and says I am no more one than the other and not a bit of difference it makes, he will have my attention. That would mean losing about 99% of what he is running on. What do you have left then Andrew? Not very damn much.

Until then, everyone will huff and puff and blow the house down and is afraid of being blamed for something that has nothing to do with any of this as obama is not, a black man.

As for my screen name, it makes no more difference if it’s Peggy Fry or Roasted Chicken. My point remains the same. And for a person such as yourself to even try to bring that into the conversation only shows how incapable you are of staying on point. Another affliction of one who hasn’t ever had a original thought.

There’s your break.

May 1, 2008 - 8:40 am 24. Texas Gal:

If he wins the presidency, it will be much harder for these charlatans to ply their trade.

You’ve got to be kidding.

First of all, I predict there will be no backlash for Obama from this base of black supporters. Those that knew of his relationship with Wright and of Wright’s message already saw Obama as their Manchurian Candidate. Those that didn’t will accept that it was the necessary politically expedient thing for Obama to do in order to calm the white folk’s fears. Obama may loose some support from his non-blacks, and that was the point of his condemnation of Wright, to reassure his non-black supporters. And that’s not cynicism on my part; it’s the reality of my personal experience.

Secondly, I do agree the smart thing for Republicans to do is to lay off the Wright issue because healing the race relations in America is not the responsibility of the President. It’s distressing to me that there are so many who seem to believe the opposite, such as the Obama’s and the white elitists base.

And since race relations in America is the platform that Obama chose to run on from the very beginning of his campaign with his ‘healing America’ mantra while attempting to not appear as a black candidate, then his post-racial caricature of himself once he realized it was a useful tool, he has set the stage to blame his defeat on race relations in America. That is inevitably how his loss will be portrayed.

The only way to avoid that is for the DNC to do the prudent thing by understanding that if Obama is their nominee, when he is defeated by McCain, they will be responsible for setting back race relations in our country.

Dark Helmet: if you want to be a part of changing how American society has viewed who is black and who isn’t, that’s a worthy goal. However, don’t pretend that the “one-drop” rule doesn’t exist and, therefore, BHO and others like him are making things up when they refer to themselves as black. And don’t pretend that nearly every black American who isn’t a recent African immigrant doesn’t have some white ancestry to a greater or lesser degree.

When it stops mattering, perhaps people will stop mentioning it.

May 1, 2008 - 9:11 am 27. Jvette:

If the nomination goes to Hillary Clinton instead of Barack Obama, blacks in this country will blame the Republicans and the right wingers since they are the ones who brought Rev. Wright to the forefront and keep harping on it. Obama’s loss in this way will only confirm to them what the Dems have been saying for years, that it is the Republicans who are racist, that will never accept a black man as president. This is not hurting him with the black populace, it is the whites who are abandoning ship and they will say it is because the racist Republicans scared them off using Rev. Wright.

Get ready for President Hillary and it will be the fault of the likes of Rush, Sean, Mark all who I have loved for years. I can no longer listen now, though, as I feel that they have paved the way for Hillary. God help us.

And Bill O’reilly’s interview with her was disgusting. If he really thinks he is a hard nose, he needs a reality check of his own.

Honestly, is there anyone out there that doesn’t believe one of the first things Obama would do if elected is to embrace Wright again? The pastor nailed it and you chose not to listen. He said Obama was distancing himself because of political expediency. I’ve been waiting for a Bill Cosby speech from Obama and I sure haven’t heard any.

May 1, 2008 - 10:08 am 30. Bilbo Baggins:

If I wanted to find for Rev. Wright a literary prototype, I would indicate the father Karamazov from Dostoevsky’s novel “The Brothers Karamazov”, old buffoon who delights in exhibiting his most repugnant deeds. The insane agitation around the pastor-clown reminds me also the film “Planet of the Apes” (1968) with the magnificent Charlton Heston. Moreover I feel myself to be in the Monkey Planet and therefore I would propose a new version of this truly prophetic film. The Apes take the power (in free elections naturally) over the white race and reduce it to animal state. Meanwhile in a secret underground laboratory, forgotten by all, a crazy scientist continues his extravagant researches no more disturbed by his judicious colleagues. For the role of this crazy scientist I would propose Woody Allen. He wants to revive his beloved brothers Marx, but makes an error and revives John Wayne with his famous Winchester and Texan hat.
The new Earth now is ruled by the Supreme Chief Mac-Obamus together with his spiritual adviser Venerable Master of All Sciences Jeremiah The Wise.
The last scene: John Wayne enters in the castle of the Supreme Chief and Venerable Jeremiah. All guardians cry: a white man cannot enter in the sacred abode of our divine Rulers! John Wayne says: “I don’t believe in the authority and judgment of irresponsible monkeys”, showing his infallible Winchester to the terrorized apes. All those who know John Wayne’s films can easily image what follows.

This is not the degree of “judgement” I wish to see in a presidential candidate.

May 1, 2008 - 12:06 pm 36. rvastar:

This “piece” is asinine! If I was Obambi’s campaign manager, and was given the opportunity to try to hoodwink independent/conservative voters into “moving on” from the whole Wright imbroligio, this is exactly the sort of double-talk and bullsh!t I would come up with.

Basically, what Loy is arguing is that non-liberals shouldn’t harp on Obambi’s Wright connection too much because it might lend credence to victim-class black’s/guilt-ridden white’s perceptions that eroding support for Obambi is due to racism on the part of the white American voting public…and that if it appears that Obambi loses either the Dem nomination OR the national election due to his connection to Wright, it will give Wright and the rest of Grievance, Inc. fuel to continue their stock-n-trade of race-baiting and grievance-mongering.

Ridiculous…utterly ridiculous!

If Obambi lost the election because he grabbed a human baby out of it’s mother’s arms and ate it on live television, guess what: Grievance, Inc. is still going to scream “Racism!”

The only “racism” that’s going to kill Obambi’s presidential chances is coming from Obama World!

It’s the racism coming from Wright: “9/11 was chickens coming home to roost!…US invented AIDS!” (TRANSLATION: “White people are evil!”)

It’s the racism coming from Ayers: “Empire resurrected and unapologetic, war without end…a new kind of energized jingoistic patriotism, unprecedented and unapologetic military expansion, white supremacy…” (TRANSLATION: “White people are evil!…except for sufficiently guilt-ridden Leftists like me!”)

It’s the racism coming from his wife: “For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country” (TRANSLATION: “Because selfish white people have been keeping us from creating a Utopia of universal health care, fixed souls, and tenured faculty-positions for all!”)

Why in the world should the American people give the Presidency to a man who has – for his entire life – surrounded himself with people who hate the US!!!

In the immortal words of Mugatu from Zoolander: “Doesn’t anybody notice this? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!”

Say what you will about Barack Obama, but he is not a stupid man.

No, he’s not…he’s counting on everyone else being stupid…stupid enough to drink the Kool-Aid!

…the fact is that Obama has now joined the battle against the conspiratorial victimhood complex of Jeremiah Wright and his ilk

Are you on crack!?! He’s done no such thing!

Even if this whole thing isn’t anything but a giant piece of political theatre dreamed up by Team Obama/Wright (Slogan: “I say, “Can I Get An Amen?”…He says, “Present!”) – WHICH IT IS – it still doesn’t negate this fact:

Wright didn’t say anything different than what he’d already said!

When Obambi commented on Wrights statements before, he tried to explain everything away with moral equivalence and Grandma-cide!…he tried to shame white America into silence by claiming that Wright’s words were “taken out of context”…”Tsk, tsk, all you out-of-touch white folks!”

Now, when Wright fortuitously shows up again and makes the exact same statements, all of sudden, Obambi is “outraged!” and “sickened!”

Polling showed that his evasive excuse-making the last time around didn’t work and was hurting him with voters. This time, when he “magically” got the chance for a do-over, he made a tactical decision to maximize his chances of winning the presidency…nothing more, nothing less.

But even if his conversion is one of pure convenience, that’s arguably almost as good as a genuine change of heart, because he’s unlikely to “convert” back.

Riiiiighhhttt…because the most liberal Leftist in the Senate has suddenly had a “Road to Damascus” moment, whereby he’s seen the light about the fallacy of one of his political ideology’s cornerstones – namely, that the masses are weak, pathetic creatures who can only be protected from the rich jackals that prey on them by a force-field of state programs (”Raise shields…and taxes!”) and a regular dose of self-esteem via “apologies” and “context” (”Sorry our ‘programs’ have destroyed the black community over the past 50 years. We meant well…in a good way”)

and if he is able to bring his massive numbers of black supporters along for the ride– he can do an enormous amount of good.

And if a frog had wings…

I’m tired of typing.

Odd thread this. Is Brendan Loy engaged in Jesuitry or Talmudics?

Barack Obama did the only thing he could do about Wight short of conceding the primary to Clinton. It took courage–Wright is a nasty piece of work with a loud mouth–but Obama had no option. Even a rat turns when cornered.

Not that Obama was ratlike in manner. In manner Obama is flawlessly graceful. It’s the substance beneath the manner, or more accurately, the lack thereof, that disturbs.

By his own account, Obama resented white people for his first twenty years. The last twenty years he’s been politically and spiritually wed to Black Nazi Witch-Doctor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. So how many years are left between his first twenty years and his last when Obama didn’t resent White people? What occasioned his glorious, if brief, epiphany?

Obama’s wife assures us that no American will be allowed to sit idly by during the great changes her husband plans for our country. What will happen to those of us who who are satisfied with the the old, democratic America and don’t think we need a cultural revolution? Re-education camps, I suppose. Reactionary management classes. Political and social sensitivity seminars.

The fact that Obama is an empty suit with nothing in his resume is the least troubling thing about him. Scarier is that for a guy full of sincerity who has written am autobiography and dominates the public square twenty-four-seven, Obama remains opaque. Two dimensional. All surface and no depth. A one-eyed Jack who never shows the other side of his face. A high minded fellow who never gets down to earth and talks specifics.

I’m genuinely impressed that Obama had the courage to give his venomous old mentor the heave-ho. I’ll be even more impressed when he stops massaging white voters and starts irritating black voters.

I’ll believe Obama when he reminds black voters that people of every ethnicity on the planet have learned to speak common American English and Ebonics is ignorant, lazy-minded speech with a silly name.

I’ll believe Obama when he tells Black voters that Black Liberation Theology, like Black Muslim theology, is Black Nazi mumbo-jumbo.

I’ll believe Obama when he tells Black voters to back-burner their love and loyalty for the widely varietal continent of Africa where most have never been and know nothing about and instead, direct their love and loyalty to one spouse, the children they bring into this world together and the variegated democratic society in which their loving and loyal family lives and grows.

I’ll believe Obama when he tells Black voters that the days of poorbox robbing, corporation mau-mauing,race profiteering parasites like Sharpton, Jackson and Wright are done and gone.

Meanwhile, my kids are voting Clinton and Her Ladyship and I are plumping for McCain.

“YO MAMA!” That homey phrase explains WHY Obama took so long to condemn the appalling Jeremiah Wright comments. Obama may have thrown his own grandmother under the bus recently in comparing her private comments on black crime to Wright’s far worse public comments of anti-American and anti-white hate, …BUT, hey man, do NOT ever disrespect “yo mama.”
In other words, as Obama himself said it this week when totally repudiating his pastor at this late date, the final straw was simply that Wright has now directly DISRESPECTED Obama himself by publicly announcing how the Senator was “distancing” himself from his pastor merely for political expediency. Obama was correctly outraged at this imputation of his lack of sincerity in condemning the foolish statements of his pastor, demagogic comments long sold as DVD’s in Wright’s & Obama’s own church. Barack made a big point in his repudiation this week of noting this personal attack on his integrity from his pastor’s grandstanding foolishness. So for Barack, its “yo mama” to Wright…AND good riddance finally! Yes, we all can rejoice in that.

I would like to know, what kind of helmet do you use and why is it dark? As armour my big round ears are very efficient as you can see in all the adventures that I have had in my glorious life. About your anthropological calculations (“he is 1/2 black & 1/2 white”) I must say that they are doubtful and arithmetically wrong: 1/2 & 1/2 is one and not “mix”. A mix is whisky and soda and not a man. That means that Obama is not a mix, but a complete man. Yes, Sir. But the main problem is not to be a man o not to be. I’m not a man. I’m a mouse, but I’m worthy much more than a man or a woman to lead this great and splendid country. I’m black, but my face is white and sincere. So, differently of “mixed” Obama or false Jeremiah (this impostor is a whitey who every week travels to Bahamas with money of his parishioners to bake in the sun). If Americans want as President truly black and truly white, only I can be this President. My Cabinet will be also really multiracial: First Lady Minnie, Vice President my best friend Donald, Secretary of State Miss Beazley, Secretary of Defence Barney, Secretary of the Interior Pluto. I’ll take also Obama as my chauffeur and Rev. Wright as Ambassador to the United Nations of Liars and Gossipers. With my Presidency the World will be truly happy.

May 2, 2008 - 4:13 am 52. Don:

The long life of the blood libels that are Mr Wright’s stock and trade, and the fact that many in this country found his words to be their “common ground” says volumes about the state of race relations in this country. Why would anyone seek excuses for failure relentlessly? Why would a group of people let themselves be dominated by a school of thought saying they have “no chance” (nor do their children) because of “White America”? For people like Mr. Wright it is their path to individual power, for the Dems it defines them (divide and conquer, keep the powerless powerless and blame others). The real bottom line is this Black, White, Indifferent, you own your own success or failure, if you blame others for your failures it only reflects on you.

The month old Philly speech–hailed by the left as the second coming of the Gettysburg Address–created the moral equivalence of Wright = white Grandma and cleverly blamed perpetually racist white folk for the rise of truth tellers like the embattled pastor. That disingenuous attempt to bury the problem had been trumped by Wrights weekend coming out parties at the NAACP and the Natl. Press Club. So Barry Hussein had to make yet another phony admonition of shock and horror at beliefs he had no idea were held by a close friend of 20 years. ****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.
Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials, they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.

This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.

This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!

Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!

For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.

It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.
