I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that while we are not (as a nation) entirely passed the idea of disregarding otherwise skillful politicians because of their personal lives, we are getting there.

Honestly, even if true, I don’t think McCain’s grumpy, out-of-touch image would necessarily suffer from this. It didn’t derail the Clinton machine 16 years ago, it might make him seem more normal. Just my two cents.

When there is distinctiveness, one goes looking for the cause of the distinctiveness.

So, it is a case of taking into consideration where a person is coming from, and ethics goes a long way in describing where a person is coming from.

Plus, there is something to be said about something being right, being different than, something being right for me.

For the former has room to be more encompasing than the latter.

This hardly comes as a surprise.

McCain was a media darling as long as he was against the Republican establishment and not a threat to the dems.

It was obvious to many of us on the right that if McCain became the nominee, the “friendly” press would turn on him with a vengeance.

The timing of this story tells all.

Watch for plenty more dirty politics by the MSM against their buddy, McCain.

I wonder if McCain understands how this works.

It’s true, the MSM would never, ever go after a Democrat president for having an affair. The MSM completely and totally ignored the Monica Lewinsky scandal during his entire presidency, not one single word about it, because the liberal MSM was in bed with Clinton.

We Republicans are victims. We’re always getting victimized by the MSM. It’s so unfair!!! Pity us, someone, please!

And yet the appearance of impropriety may, in McCain’s case, be just as damaging as any real impropriety. So much for Karl Rove’s recommendation in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal that McCain go after Obama for his ties to lobbyists….

Thank you for a nuanced, fair minded appraisal of this situation. This article was nothing but a cynical hit-piece if I ever saw one. The NYT endorsed McCain right before Florida to stick it to Rudy, while sitting on this story. Then they waited until McCain was the likely nominee, and also perhaps when a story was out there disparaging to the likely Dem nominee (Mrs. Obama’s ‘proud of America’ comments) in order to take the focus away from this negative. I thought that these MSM types were out for McCain, according to some conservatives. Guess not. I believe it is sad that many conservatives still hold the belief that McCain is a liberal. Actual liberals don’t seem to be confused about McCain’s stance.

This is usually only true within the journalistic community when it comes to Republican politicians. The MSM is for all practical purposes the close partner of the Democratic Party. It feels duty bound to slime GOP candidates. The recent bizarre attempt to harm John McCain shows just how far they are willing to go. The resulting story was so weak that the reputation of the New York Times ended up being further damaged.
