Edwards Confesses Sexual Affair; Claims He Didn’t Father Child

August 8, 2008

It’s official: ABC News reported on Friday that John Edwards repeatedly lied during his presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with 44-year-old Rielle Hunter, a novice filmmaker.

Roger L. Simon: “Hot Air says Edwards is ready to take a paternity test.  Given this language, I’m not so sure.”

Jennifer Rubin: “For starters, we learn and relearn, forget and learn again that verbal acuity does not translate into high morals.”

Richard Miniter: “It’s Okay, He Didn’t Love Her”

The Volokh Conspiracy: “When his word is worth less than that of a supermarket tabloid, it’s an indication of how far he has fallen.”

Click “Read” for more…

Taylor Marsh: “Politicians never learn. It’s always the lie that gets you in the end. The arrogance.”

Ed Driscoll: “This sounds more like behavior more at home with a rock group on tour passing a favored groupie from musician to musician than (presumed) adults trying to position their man to run for the most powerful office in the land.”

TigerHawk: “While it is obviously easy to condemn Edwards for cheating on his sick wife and putting his political party in great jeopardy and I normally delight in piling on with the rest of the righties, this once I am going to refrain.”

Cenk Uygur: “I want every pundit who condemns John Edwards today to tell me what the difference between him and McCain is and why John McCain shouldn’t also be run out of politics for his adulterous affairs and what he did to his first wife.”

Kevin Drum: Mainstream Media, You may now begin covering this story.”

Politico: John Edwards’ statement

Patterico’s Pontifications: So let me get this straight — he claims he ended his affair with Hunter over 9 months previous to February 2008, and that he previously admitted the affair to his wife. Yet for some reason, he still saw fit to visit her at a Beverly Hills hotel at 2:30AM last month and didn’t bother to tell his wife this time.”

Micky Kaus: “Edwards: I Lied. Can I Go to Denver Now?”

OddCulture: Stick a fork in John Edwards. He’s done.”

Marc Ambinder: “According to people close to the Edwardses, Elizabeth Edwards has secured a primetime speaking role at the Democratic National Convention; John Edwards, as of this point, does not, and people close to him think he will beg off and not attend the convention so as not to distract Obama.”

Gawker: “The second ABC announced Brian Ross was on the case, you knew this was coming.”

Roger L. Simon: “There is no reason to believe anything he has said. That he claims not to be the father of the child without taking a paternity test is laughable.”

A Blog For All: “Oh, like it makes a difference that John didn’t love Rielle? He broke his marriage vows to Elizabeth, and it makes him look like a shameless huckster to try and carry off as though he was the family man even as his family knew he strayed.”

Hot Air: “Obvious question: If the affair ended so long ago that he couldn’t be the father of a child born in February of this year, what’s he doing sneaking out to a hotel late at night to visit his old girlfriend?”

Don Surber: “Two Americas: 1. Honest decent people. 2. Liars.”

Ross Douthat: “The Remission Defense”

Byron York: “For all those reporters who have suddenly become interested in Edwards: It’s a money story now.”

TalkLeft: “Kind of gutsy for him to launch a presidential bid knowing this was in his background. Was he thinking if Rudy Giuliani could get away with it, so could he?”

My Pet Jawa: “Makes Larry Craig look like a decent guy by comparison.”

Tom Maguire: “Does this admission let enough air out of the balloon that the media go away (as if they had really even arrived — I can’t wait to see the NY Times non-coverage of this.) I doubt it.”

Jonathan Martin: “He almost wasn’t certainly going to be tapped as Obama’s running mate, but this likely eliminates the prospect of a cabinet post, too.”

The Stump: “The coming wave of debate about the relevance of a candidate’s extramarital affairs may be an unwelcome development for the McCain team.”

Honestly, this is so callous and hypocritical it is hard to comment on it. His children, his dying wife, running for the presidency on a faith based platform? Men and their penises… we really need a woman to be president.

Let’s give the weasel the benefit of the doubt on his truthfulness, after all, he is a plaintiff’s attorney and a democrat.
Here’s the bet for the office pool; how long before this lying POS says, in response to one of his lap dog MSM types, “I’ve answered all your questions, now I want to put this behind us and move forward?”

Men and their penises… we really need a woman to be president.

Right, as if skank sluts like Rielle Hunter being ready and eager for a penis-sticking aren’t part of the problem.
Just the evil penis-wielders.

Saying we need a female President because a slut and a scoundrel did the nasty is like saying the scandals of Marion Barry and Larry Craig prove we need a black President.

If you’ve publicly lied about something for nearly a year, your denials of paternity or payments to “she who was recently visited for 5+ hours at the Beverly Hills Hilton” do not ring particularly true.

I imagine the behind the scenes “damage control” phone call Edwards received from someone (HoDe?) at the DNC …”Ok, let’s get it out now, so it will have died down (don’t hold your breath) by convention time.”

It’s not the fact that the MSM lied about this story that bothers me. Lying is an MSM trademark, after all. It’s the fact that the MSM’s ethics have sunk so low that they are now collectively looking up at the Enquirer.

It wasn’t love, it was simply lust! Don’t we all feel better? This is also known as throwing your mistress under the bus when the affair is exposed. Which, of course, any mistress with an IQ above a, well, mink’s, would expect.

ABC News reports, “Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife’s cancer was in remissionwhen he began the affair with Hunter.”

How kind of John to remain faithful to Elizabeth as long as she wasn’t dying. That makes just a, you know, routine violation of the seventh Commandment rather than a really bad one, right?

“He said he would ask questions about any possible arrangement” having been made for payments. Yes, John Edwards is going to track down the people who paid off his horizontal friend (remember, he “didn’t love her”) in order to keep her quiet. Sort of reminds me of someone else’s pledge to “find the real killers.”

The Edwardian Box

perhaps i am being edwardish (i.e., egocentric and narcassitic), but i read an interview with the national enquirier publisher - and he was being very full of himself with the quality of the evidence yet to be disclosed. his demeanor, unless he’s just an oaf, suggested new levels rather than just further supports.

i think the admission today was a classic liar admission - it admitted nothing more than was alleged (denying portions, of course). the problem with today’s admission may be that it may have been too expansive.

The Edwardian Box - Giving too broad a denial.

he did not have to claim that friends or supporters (wtf?) may have made payments without him knowing - just say, “i didn’t pay or ask another to pay anything.”

“my wife was in remission”? like that makes a difference?

he talked too much. will be interesting to see the EB close on him …

Like Bill Clinton’s private peccadillo vis a vie Monica Lewinsky,
John Edwards alleged affair should not be the subject of dinner table talk around America. Which is why I laud the New York Times and other members of the main stream media for doing their best to keep it out of national discourse. Barack Obama must get elected this November, and anything that casts negativity on the Democratic party must be silenced, or at the very least, muffled by all patriotic reporters who want not only to cast the war on terrorism in the worst light possible, but to mock everything John McCain stands for, like offshore drilling for oil which would help sever the strangle hold mideast oil magnates have on America.

I applaud the main stream media for minimizing the affect of Barack’s San Francisco statment about small town midwest blue collar workers clinging to their guns, wives and religion.

Likewise, I applaud the main stream media for never asking the beautiful Michelle during one of her many speeches if she ever heard the good Reverend utter anything anti-American.

By the same token, the main stream media deserves kudos for never asking Barack what religion he was while growing up in Indonesia before he became a Christian.

Lastly, and this is just a personal observation, but forty two year old Ms. Hunter is a lovely, beautifully pert, charming, well spoken woman. Now I ask you; wouldn’t she and the handsome, charming and debonair make a strikingly beautiful couple strolling down Rodeo Drive on a warm summer’s eve? But I’m getting off track.

Let’s all do our part to do damage control, just like when Bill Clinton was painting the town red with the blond bombshell, Miss Jennifer Flowers. Wherever and whenever possible I implore you to play the sympathy card, wrapping it the Elizabeth’s genuine and courageous public acknowledgment of forgiveness.

Additionally, never let the conversation move to the alleged lies and half truths that have kept the wonderful Obama mired in a virtual tie with all the duty, honor and country crap that comes out of the McCain camp every day. So Barack’s middle name is Hussein. I look forward to the day when Barack puts his right hand on the Koran the moment he’s sworn in as President and says, “Now I can tell you what I’ve been longing to say. I used to be a Muslim. Now I’m a Christian. And now I’m also something much more powerful than both: Your President. Now that’s a day the Muslim world won’t soon forget.

Paid Sources @ National Enquirer…..vs Bought and Paid For, MSM.

I’ll take paid sources anyday, at least they can be audited for veracity. John Edwards and his wife, because they discussed this hiccup in 2006, should have crafted an outing of this news in 2006…..now these empty suits can be hung in some obscure closet where they both belong.

the deception here is embarrassing to anyone who ever believed in this pair.

I hope the Enquirer gets a Pulitzor for thier honest, steadfast determination, to follow a story until facts overwhelmed the deception.

too think, that this guy thought himself worthy to sit at the head of the table of largesse, my oh my how hubris winds its path, through the lives of the empty suits.

here is to hoping that the investigations of cash flows, continues for at least another year.

Enquirer proves a market for truth exists, and when a price is available, truth will always win out. 3 cheers N E!

Honestly of all things to be concerned about, Edwards’ love life should be the least important, what he does in private life is no one else’s business. However, doing this while boasting his high morality and family image was not a smart movie.

Aug 9, 2008 - 6:54 am 34. Roark:

“Edwards’ love life should be the least important, what he does in private life is no one else’s business”

—Immoral activities that he engaged in his private life reflect the lack of character and dignity John Edwards also displays in his public life. There is a connection between the two. A person with a healthy self esteem and an objective awareness of life, one who understands right and wrong and has the moral character to live by it, does not engage in this type of behavior. Infidelity is no respecter of persons amongst politicians, i.e. Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Eliot Spitzer, etc. The USA is in desperate need of statesmen who have character, dignity, and place a high moral value on doing what is right.
Again, the real tragedy of it all is Elizabeth Edwards and her kids.

Aug 9, 2008 - 7:35 am 35. AlexinCT:

Heh, I see a ton of people already trying to make the story about Edwards’ private life, just like with the Clinton affair. There are 2 real stories here. The first is about the affair and how both Edwards & his wife knew about this, covered it up, and pretended they where A-OK. But the real big story here is the role played by the people in the MSM. Citing stupid excuses like not following up on tabloid innuendo when they have followed up on much less when the perp in question had an (R) next to their name or their, or trying to not hurt the poor missus, they for all intents and purposes tried to help them cover it up. The propagandists in the MSM have moved beyond just slanting the news in favor of the left and the democrats, people; they are now covering up for them! We can not let that fact become lost in this discussion, and you can bet they will try their best to do it. The question begs to be asked, and answered: how many other times have they done things like this for democrats? Have they done this already for Obama? Pelosi? Reid? They have ignored stories or given them short shrift when they hurt democrats. There is no doubt about it. This goes beyond bias.

Aug 9, 2008 - 8:20 am 36. Rand Simberg:

Why is the “she meant nothing to me” meme always trotted out when someone is caught “in flagrante”. So John Edwards risked his marraige, kids, reputation, career on someone ho meant nothing???

Because women by nature are much more threatened by emotional infidelity than physical. Many can accept fooling around as long as there’s no threat to the relationship (and in the case of someone like Edwards) access to the power and the money, which provides security for them and their offspring. Men, on the other hand, are the opposite, because if the wife is sleeping around, he can’t be sure that the kids that he’s paying for are his. It’s basic evolutionary psychology.

Some dingbat asked “who cares”, and all the liberal arguements lean that way. So here it is in short form just in case some of you libs actually don’t get it.

This story isn’t about the private life of Silky Pony. It is about the fact that Silky Pony is a lying sack of immoral crap, who even has a fall guy lined up for this kind of crap. But that isn’t even the main story, the main story is the media being so far in the tank for liberals that they sat on this when you know for damn sure they never did the same for a republican.

Aug 9, 2008 - 1:45 pm 41. Koblog:

Sherry,

Mrs. Edwards is decidedly NOT a victim in this.

She knew about John’s affair in 2006. Then John Edwards actually ran for president and overtly lied about the affair when confronted point blank. Mrs. Edwards covered for him. She is thus duplicitous in his lie; as much a liar as John Edwards is.

Mrs. Edwards was willing to cover up the lie (like the MSM has) to achieve raw power. This sounds like the same “victimhood” of Mrs. Eliot Spitzer, who also knew but ignored it to gain the Governor’s Mansion.

Why does this matter? Because if the GOP deserves to be sunk by non-stop MSM criticism over Mark Foley and Larry Craig, so should the Dems. If Republicans, according to the MSM, deserve to be run out of office based on moral hypocrisy, so should Dems.

Aug 9, 2008 - 2:24 pm 42. dvd:

Forgive me, but I am losing my patience with the extremely extensive and unnecessarily aggressive coverage of the John Edwards faux pas concerning a somewhat inappropriate relationship with the cute, pert, undeniably attractive and virtually irresistible Rielle Hunter.

Friends, I ask you, “Why should one baby misstep wipe out a list of accomplishmens that’s more than 20 years long.” Is it a crime to care about the poor and disadvantaged like John Edwards does?

These anti-Edwards, anti-Obama, anti-progressive reporters are vicious. And I might say a touch jealous.

At least the New York Times has the decency to minimize the story, and keep the Presidential, albeit far off, light of hope alive that one day John Edwards will assume his rightful place in the oval office.

Relentless bashing of a good man’s character:
To all these hate mongering, mainstream midia newspaper people, I have only one more thing to say: Who was the one without sin who had the moral turpitude, the enormous audacity to cast the first stone?

If Elizabeth forgives him, that’s enough for me.

Actually, if you’re looking for someone to smear, how about John McCain who, in the middle of the Viet Nam war, left his unit for 7 years, forcing some other brave fighter of the skies to put his life on the line, daily dodging missiles, flying countless bombing missions, never knowing whether he was going to return to fight another day.

At least John Edwards had the steely courage, the moral resolve to admit he was sleeping with the enemy when kindhearted Elizabeth needed him most.

Next, I suppose we’re going to hear about some dreamed up crack, cocaine and dope smoking done by Barack Hussein prior to the final debate with Hillary Clinton. With the media, it’s always the liberal Democrats who get thrown under the pundit’s bus. It’s a shame because, when you’re working night and day trying to get the country back on the right track, there’s always somebody out there trying to stab you in the back. Et tu politicos periodicos.

Does it not smack of those days in 2000 when the Swift Boat vets tried to sink the Presidential ship of the good John Kerry? They condemned him for saying American soldiers engaged in wholesale butchery, brutality, murder, bestiality and torture during the Viet Nam war.

Okay, maybe he went a little overboard for dramatic emphasis, but, hello, haven’t the Republicans ever heard of free speech? Which reminds me.

When Osama criticizes middle class America for clinging to their bibles, religion and guns, duh, isn’t that just what they do? Maybe the truth hurts, but for the most part, middle America mouth-breathers, are semi-literate, gun worshiping, WalMart shopping louts.

In private, Obama admits it’s the elite opinion-leaders on the east and west coasts who’ll “Get me elected. I don’t really care that the American heartland mentality doesn’t share my progressive views on everything from gay marrige to reparations for African Americans to comprehensive Affirmative Action in the workplace and beyond.” All these years, I’m sure you’ll agree the black man has suffered because of both overt and covert racism.” States Barack emphatically with eyes as big as saucers,
“When I’m elected, I’ll create a playing field that rights historical wrongs; does what the framers of the constitution should and could have done in the first place. That, my friends, says Obama proudly (but with a sense of humility), will be my rightful place in history.”

In response to Roark, I don’t know how closely you have been following politics over the years, but there is no politician without skeletons in their closet, what matters is their ability to lead and do their job. I work at hotel in the Czech Republic at the moment, and let me tell you most of the world outside the U.S. doesn’t care if a leader has an affair, what they care about are policies and intelligence. I agree that would be should have a dignified moral leader, but in politics those types of people are not the ones who get as far as presidential primaries. And lets not forget, several Presidents had affairs, Bill Clinton, and even JFK, but that doesn’t change that they both did some pretty good things while in office.

What Edwards did is what most men & women do while in relationships: that is have affairs. It is a deed that is promoted & done with consistency. The difference between a man doing it apart from a woman is that he is usually caught, where as women are more discreet. Then why is it a shock to people when it is discovered? We all have skeletons in the closet.
To avoid being deceived or to deceive, just lay off relationships in the modern era. We people cannot be trusted.

Liars all around - now the Rielle woman won’t consent to a peternity test, so that means she’s lying about the paternity. If John Edwards is the father as she claims, then he can authorize a test on what is after all his child too, or Rielle, having made the allegation, has the burden of proof - either way there is no way to refuse a paternity test.
