Freaky Friday: Obama’s Weird Peace Prize Win

If the president can win the Peace Prize, almost anything is possible. (Also read Ron Rosenbaum: Obama-Haters Won Him the Nobel Prize, and Ron Radosh: Will Ayers Write the Acceptance Speech?)

If you woke up on the morning of Friday, October 9, 2009, and found yourself in the body of your thirteen-year-old child, or that you’d grown fangs and a unicorn horn, or that your car had suddenly been possessed by the spirit of your deceased mother-in-law, I hope you didn’t fret too much. It was just Freaky Friday.

I knew this for sure when I arose to find that President Barack Obama had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. What? Excuse me? This prize is typically awarded for a wide, long-ranging history of efforts to promote world peace. The Nobel powers that be cited Obama’s record of giving the world “hope for a better future” and striving for nuclear disarmament.

Who doesn’t want to reduce, modernize, and streamline the nuclear stockpile? And … “hope”? Are you serious? This is the same guy who couldn’t even take time out of his busy day to have waffles with the Dalai Lama. (A person who arguably could have been given the award, but I suppose it was too soon since the prize went that way in 1989.)

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been openly supportive of most of Obama’s foreign policy stance, but what has he really done which is worthy of this fete? He’s essentially pulling out of Iraq under the same plan G.W. Bush had in place, and he may or may not be preparing to scale up the war in Afghanistan, depending upon which day you ask. And while his predecessor may have been a bit of a war monger, at least he kept his attacks contained to the Middle East and Europe. Obama has started a bombing run on the moon! Interplanetary war!

A brief look at the list of past winners is informative at this point. There was a time when the people and organizations tapped for this prestigious honor were no-brainers to most rational observers. Leon Jouhaux, Martin Luther King, Cordell Hull, Frank B. Kellogg, and the Red Cross have all gotten the nod and a fair case can be made for each.

I should also note that American presidents have taken this prize before with varying degrees of approbation. Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were each recipients, though their dedication to peace often included a proclivity toward armed combat. Even the generally hapless Jimmy Carter was a winner, and no matter what you may think of his policies, he was definitely an agent of peace. True, his hesitancy to pull the trigger left this reporter floating on an aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean for a full year, awaiting an order to attack Iran which never came. But he made sincere, if bungled, efforts to calm the waters surrounding Israel and always chose the path of peace.

So, does the world love him or hate him? Loses an Olympics bid. Wins the Nobel Peace Prize. Which one is meaningless? Go ahead, contort yourselves into ever-tightening rhetorical knots. It’s terrific entertainment.

Obviously this is the Nobel committee response to the IOC. Call it a “Oh yea? We’ll show you” moment.

In doing so they have continued the fraud of this so-called “peace” prize.

OMG, FoxNews has a great article about it. The Nobel Peace Prize nomination ended on February 1, i.e. OBAMA WAS THE POTUS ONLY 12 DAYS. Jawdropping.

So, The Fox has a list of activities of Obama in those 12 days that brought him the nomination and the Prize. SWEET:

Since his nomination came before 2/1/09, the whole process is suspect.

I guess he was nominated based on the hope that he would be peaceful.

Or as others would have it, because he replaced Bush.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been a joke for years. Obama receiving it just makes it an even bigger joke. If Obama had acted decisively and followed General McChrystal’s recommendations on Afghanistan, I wonder whether he would have received the prize. Could that be one of the reasons he has dithered and dawdled as Commander in Chief on that issue? The man is morally bankrupt, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case.

I thought now would be a good time for us to all join in one of my personally favorite songs:

There she is, Miss America
There she is, your ideal
The dreams of a million girls
Who are more than pretty
May come true in Atlantic City
Oh she may turn out to be
The queen of femininity
There she is, Miss America
There she is, your ideal
With so many beauties
She’ll take the town by storm
With her all-American face and form
And there she is
Walking on air she is
Fairest of the fair she is
Miss America

The European puppetmasters of the Open Society are well pleased with their servant Obama and wished to bolster his confidence after his Olympic loss. Perhaps after the value added tax and surrender of the United States military the puppetmasters will let him join the European Union.
The cost of awarding the peace prize is nothing compared to the rewards of gaining a nation. The global sigh of relief comes from the muckrakers of the world press and assures neither peace nor freedom.

I have been saying for quite some time what a breath of fresh air this new president has been around the world. Now some of you will take note. Does he deserve it? probably not, but now it is known what a difference it is. America is bright and good once again. I hope Obama does not squander this opportunity. At least his new administration has some breathing space and an accomplishment to go with it…and they need it. Will this newly regained good american image abroad last?…who knows.. Americans should be very proud of our president today. Good Job !!

President Obama is the United States’ first prom king with the Nobel Peace Prize; he has nothing of substance for the prize itself, but the Nobel Peace Prize is a good metaphor for Obama’s rising in political office from state senator, senator, to POTUS. The empty suit with the empty prize.

It’s more or less an affirmative action Nobel. You might as well ask what did BHO do to get into Harvard? What did he do to get a book deal? What did he do to get elected Senator? You just don’t get it, do you?

Btw, I still think Washington put the Committee under pressure, because Obama desperately needs the confirmation: “The world loves me! The world loves me!” after his Olympics disaster. “NOW THE F… CONSERVATIVES AND LIBERTARIANS WILL SHUT UP!” No way we will. We’re starting to laugh.

The problem with the Olympics was that Obama had overestimated his popularity and didn’t give the Olympic Committee (enough?) money. This mistake was corrected today: money, pressure, whatever it takes, but he had to get his world-leader-halo back.

The problem is, this retarded action has spoiled the illusion of Obama’s international success ABROAD. He pretended to be “just like you” for the rest of the world leaders. And now he has shown: “Well, not EXACTLY just like you. I can do this world (i.e. all of you) any way I want”. Imagine how “his new comrade” Putin feels about it. Or the Chinese. They all want Nobel Prizes for “audacities of hopes” (who doesn’t? heck, even I wouldn’t say no).

The Committee will have a lot of explaning to do. Also to me! Respect my authoritah!

Obama’s merits – Fresh from HuffPo: Dignitarian! (By Robert Fuller, Former president of Oberlin College)

“Obama’s Nobel Honors His Dignitarian Politics -

Some will say that Barack Obama’s Nobel Prize is premature. “What has he done?” they’ll ask.

Obama got the prize not for doing, but for being. Not for making peace, but for exemplifying something new on the world stage — the politics of dignity.

The Nobel Committee has simply made explicit what many have sensed. President Obama is the herald of a dignitarian politics. Not libertarian, not egalitarian, but dignitarian.

Dignitarian politics represents a modern synthesis of libertarian and egalitarian politics. War between these two battle-scarred, now exhausted ideologies shaped both national and international politics throughout the twentieth century. Obama is the first politician of world stature to identify and model an alternative that can meet the challenges of the twenty-first. Awarding Obama the Nobel Prize is an expression of the hope that our best chance for world peace lies in the dignitarian politics of which he is an exemplar. [...]

I have it from a trusted source that their overarching mission is to award a Peace Price to Osama Bin Laden, because he is the luminary who made the case that the GWT label was obsolete, but they sensed that the world was not quite ready for such a prophetic lurch, so they split the difference and settled for the deer in the headlight for now, as a stepping stone across the raging river of absurdity.

Oct 9, 2009 - 8:40 am 46. Hyphenated American:

Obama’s peace prize makes sense….

As we all know, because of Obama’s clumsy actions, Israel, the staunchest US ally now solidly believes that the US president hates her and is supporting the anti-american islamo-fascists. I guess this was enough for the Nobel peace committee to celebrate Obama’s achievements.

Surely, if Obama nukes Israel, he will get all Nobel prizes in one sitting, and IOC will declare him the winner of all Olympic events now and forever. Of course, Obama is now in competition with Iran and Al Qaeda, so he better act fast.

I rather like this quote from the Huffington Post. It quite nicely parries the predictable conservative talking points related to this honor conferred upon Obama

“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,” wrote DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. “Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim.”

BC, since you are so appreciative of asking questions:

Notre Dame U showed last summer that there is such a thing like an “anticipative” PhD (and this ignoring Obama’s certifiable solid past of academic & otherwise fraudulence – now the Nobel Committee amplifies this ciompetitional debasing by enshrining near that fraudulence Obama’s glaring incompetence and crass cynicism (a funny thought: crass fraudulence is the only thing that is certifiable in Obama’s career.)

Fraud pays, as Obama’s Notre Dame U PhD confirmed: the Nobel Committee mentioned as one of the reasons for bestowing on this scoundrel this prize was his (10 days short!) work for nuclear disarmament – is Obama’s dual Columbia graduation thesis “North-South Relationships In The Post-Colonial Age”/ “US-Soviet Nuclear Disarmament Issues” finally available?
Have the Nobel committee read the same draft of those outstanding works that Notre Dame U wisemen read?
Can’t we have finally access to those phenomenal works? [...]

BC, you seem to be quite “au courant” with all things Obama – when we’ll have the opportunity to read the works in question?
Or should again rely on Cashill to interpret those texts?

If the “argument” *cough* is that BHO is less globally divisive (despite the fact that here in the U.S. he is the most divisive figure in our history) then Americans as a nation should have received the prize, since they were the ones stupid enough to do the actual work of electing him.

Oct 9, 2009 - 9:10 am 59. Francis W. Porretto:

Not that the Nobel Peace Prize is at all relevant…

The working definition of peace among diplomats since the Treaties of Westphalia has always been a state of tension falling short of armed conflict. I consider that definition notable in that it recognizes world realities. The world is filled with subgroups of Mankind that hate one another and would do one another harm if not deterred or otherwise restrained. It takes effort, vigilance, and sometimes the application of large-scale organized violence to get and keep that realistic sort of peace.

The Obamunist vision of peace — the one Obama’s trying to sell, which doesn’t necessarily represent his inner convictions — is a happy-talk fantasy in which we all hold hands, sing Kumbaya off-key through our noses, and buy each other Cokes until the lavatories overflow. That’s a state of affairs that has never existed in all of recorded history. So long as cupidity and envy exist among us, it never will. But if it were to exist, it would mean that the entire human race had been transformed into something utterly alien to Man of today. What individual could reasonably claim credit for it?

The sort of peace-achievement that’s worth celebrating always comes at a harsh cost in blood and treasure. In other words, celebrate as a hero of peace him who brings a war to a successful conclusion: a Marshal Foch, a General Eisenhower, or a General MacArthur. Yet even these men must allow that their achievements were ideas only; they had to be effectuated by “rough men standing ready to do violence on their behalf.”

No, no Peace Prize nonsense for me…no matter who the recipient is.

Albert, in Nazi Germany the Reichsbahn was a travelling according to the schedules, and that fact simply cannot be credited to the nazis.
Now regarding the piece of widom you quoted: two mutual enemies (Republicans & Talibans) can very well have common low or critical views about a third party (Obama), the causes behind those views being quite different:
The Taliban criticise Obama for reasons I don’t need to mention -
The Republicans and conservative have a merciless (and fully justified so) view of Obama based on their evaluation of his past abject career, undistinguished present, and very likely hystrionic future – Nobel Prize & liberal peaeans notwithstanding.

Feel free to use this comparison in further analyses of yours -

Please. The Left bitched and moaned that Bush had done nothing to deserve being President (a position I’m not completely unsympathetic to) and one could EASILY make a case that Obama’s level of “deserving” this prize is even less than Bush’s of “deserving” the Presidency.

What I do love about it, though, is that it further highlights in the minds of people who don’t have their heads in the clouds, the complete detachment of the Left from the reality of actual accomplishments versus rhetoric and potential accomplishments. This is a good thing, as it helps “heighten the contradictions”.

Yep. No small feat, that. Too bad it arouses such anger in his detractors.

It’s not anger. As I have already said, I am GLAD he got this because it is just one more stage in the tearing off of the mask that the Left has worn to try to fit in to Western society for the past century. It doesn’t necessarily mean that Western society will be able to defeat the Leftist virus, but at least it removes one more component of the “big lie” that you are anything other than what I said about, parasites and thieving scum.

Huh?

“You had your chance with W and the republican Congress and monumentally failed.”

I, for one, did NOT vote for either Bush, Gore, Kerry, Obama or McCain, having written in my own choice each election. And last I checked, the voting numbers were nearly evenly split, indicating a large segment of the population disagrees with the other. However, I’ll award partial points on this one.

I’ll tell you, in the simplest words I can think of, what most conservatives (not to be confused with the current Republican party): we want all of the communists and socialists who don’t like our Constitution to go away. Go live someplace where socialism and/or communism are already firmly established and leave us alone.

We want the government to stop taking what belongs to us and giving it to others who haven’t done anything to earn it. We want the government to stop growing, spending, and legislating us into a perpetual and non-recoverable cycle of debt.

We want liberals and leftists to stop calling us names – we want them to grow up and realize that the world we live in is not Utopia. It never will be – Utopia (like peace) cannot be legislated. You can’t “hope” a perfect and peaceful world into being.

Obama’s feats are accomplishments?

Unfortunately for the rest of us, they cannot do it. It’s against Marxism. Karl Marx said that Communism cannot win in a single, separate country.

Tah-dah! Guess why!

Because the life in the neighbouring non-communist countries will be so much better, that the people will try to run there from the “paradise”. So, in order to win, marxism has to CONQUER THE WORLD. And you cannot do it without conquering America. When America fails (= becomes marxist), people will have nowhere to run. That’s why they cannot “leave us alone”, America is the key. The ultimate battlefield of the ideas: real justice against s.c. “social justice” (= feeding the parasites).

Praetorian: Once again, you are making assumptions about who I am. I don’t receive welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, social security, or any of the myriad “entitlements” our government offers.

Remember who pays for those entitlements. If I do end up on the dole, I will have already contributed to it myself. My complaint is against those who have never contributed a thing, yet feel no shame at taking what they haven’t earned – what has been forcefully taken from the worker, by the government, to give to someone else. On the street, they call this “robbery.” But when it’s legislated, they call it “fairness.” Bullshit.

Social Security is a program I am forced to participate in. Given the option, not one dime of my money would go into it. But you see, the government doesn’t give us that option. Now, all of the money I have “contributed” over the years has been siphoned off to pay for other “entitlement programs” – leaving Social Security in a very weak position. Chances are, there will be no retirement in there for me when I do finally retire. Yes, Social Security IS a socialized program. And I have never once supported it.

The VA exists because our veterans have put their lives on the line to protect our freedom. My daughter is, indeed, receiving VA benefits since her medical retirement from the Navy. She earned it through hard work and sacrifice. Is it a socialized program? No – it’s a program that the veteran contributes to when he/she voluntarily joins the military.

If all you have to offer in way of dialog is continued insults and derogatory terminology (”teabaggers, wiping my ass with the Constitution and spooning?” WTF), you should quit now, because you aren’t accomplishing anything, other than to show your complete and utter lack of understanding of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

117. jharp — “The teabaggers failed.”

Please try and avoid vulgar ad hominem attacks.

“Obama Care and the rest of the progressive causes are gaining momentum.”

If “Obama Care” succeeds at all, it has to do so with the consent of constituents.

“A bunch of ignorant rednecks using shout downs to influence policy has to be one of the most idiotic strategies ever foisted on us. American’s [sic] might be stupid but they aren’t that stupid.”

Again with the ad hominem attacks! I met a substantial number of professionals (medical and legal), along with small- and medium-sized business owners, at the local Tea Party I attended. These are hardly “ignorant rednecks.” These are AMERICANS, worried that vast debt is being incurred with no transparency whatsoever, and that decisions are being made about important life issues without their consent.

And town hall attendance isn’t a “strategy.” It’s an American right. Nothing was “foisted” on anyone, and there are no sinister GOP hands behind the scenes pulling strings. In fact, most conservatives I know are alarmed at the very idea that party hacks might try and co-opt legitimate anger for their own agenda.

Oh, and by the way, there was a group of Democratic women at that Tea Party I attended, as well. They had voted for Hillary Clinton, and felt betrayed, as many of us do irrespective of “party” ideology, by Obama. One lady told me that even though her candidate (Hillary) lost, she was more than willing to support the president — until he scared her to death with TARP.

So enough with the tarring with too broad a brush.

All we have to do is outnumber you at the voting booth.

It’s funny that you think it’s a stable situation when 52% of the people try to continually tell 48% of the people what they can and can’t do, say, think, strive for, etc., just because a piece of paper (no matter how noble in intent the piece of paper was at its origins).

Has it ever, in that pea-brain of yours, occurred to you that this situation is unstable? Seriously, your party is the party of urban p*ssies like the guy in Amsterdam who said of the rising tide of violence against gays like himself, “I don’t know how to fight for freedom. I only know how to enjoy it”. You don’t know how to fight for the right to dominate in the ways you know you want to dominate (and it is domination, as you well know, it is not simply “agreeing to disagree”), you only know how to enjoy it when it is handed to you via the Constitutional processes that, up until now, have formed the consensus for governance in this country. As a student of history, I can assure you that these Constitutional processes are the exception, not the norm. If you and your kind keep on pushing, don’t figure on them lasting much longer, if you’re a betting man.

The 48% who oppose you make up the bulk of those who would actually know how to fight, not to dominate, but to avoid domination.

The government already takes more than it gives to a large and growing proportion of the population. Once those numbers reach a tipping point, all “ballot box” process bets are off. Different people will reach that threshold at different times, but when they do reach it, no amount of “shut up, he explained” rhetoric is going to stop them from acting on it.

History is not ambiguous in this respect.

We thank your daughter for her service. However, the VA being a centrally administered government program is indeed based on a socialist model. I would look that up if I were you. Veterans do contribute but most (especially injured ones) will end up using more resources than they ever put in. Obama’s feats are accomplishments?

Praetorian, explain these accomplishments -

Curious occurence though – the Nobel prize announcement came in the same very day when the lawsuit regarding Obama’s (i)legitimacy in the US District Court (Central Calif./ santa Ana) went ahead over another hurdle:

“Barnett v. Obama: Judge Confirms Hearing Dates – Judge Carter ordered the remainder dates for this case to be finalized, per the Civil Minutes, below:” (see WND and The Right Side Of Life).

Mister Hanson had a couple days ago an interesting piece about Hubris and Nemesis – I am sure that if we could channel the ancient Greek historians and drama writers they would say so.

And the funny side of this, otherwise very serious matter – do we live in that a wacky age that Nemesis has descended here from heavens for business in guise of… Orly Taiz? (Bless her soul!) Or Berg? I mean, Obama doesn’t get no respect not even amongst the Mount Olympus crew?

Either way, this will decrease Obama’s stature among Americans–both because of his complicity in this transparent foreign interference in our foreign policy, and because of the obvious absurdity of it all. We should find humorous ways to respond to it whenever possible.

Wingnut Ruth Marcus at that right-wing rag the Washington Post:

” This is ridiculous — embarrassing, even. I admire President Obama. I like President Obama. I voted for President Obama. But the peace prize? This is supposed to be for doing, not being — and it’s no disrespect to the president to suggest he hasn’t done much yet. Certainly not enough to justify the peace prize.

“Extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples?” “[C]aptured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future?” Please. This turns the award into something like pee-wee soccer: everybody wins for trying.

Scroll down the list of peace prize winners. Jimmy Carter won in 2002 “for his decades [emphasis added] of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts.” Last year’s winner, Martti Ahtisaari, was cited “for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades [emphasis added], to resolve international conflicts.”

Obama gets the award for, what, a good nine months? Or maybe a good two weeks — the nominations were due Feb. 1. The other two sitting presidents who won the prize –Woodrow Wilson in 1919 for founding the League of Nations, Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 for negotiating an end to the Russo-Japanese War — were in their second terms.

I imagine that Obama, when they woke him up this morning to deliver the news, grasped the bizarreness of it all.”

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/postpartisan/2009/10/a_nobel_for_a_good_two_weeks.html?hpid=opinionsbox1

Well, Ruth, I rather doubt that. Obama thinks Jesus should be serving him breakfast in bed.

But she’s on to something with the pee-wee soccer comparison. Our resident trolls, I suspect, are very young, which explains both their ignorance, their poor grasp of history, and their boundless sense of entitlement. They belong to the “self-esteem” generation, the generation which got stars just for showing up and breathing, which makes them conceited about their very limited intellectual abilities. So they see absolutely nothing wrong with giving an award to a president who has done nothing but talk.

Older libs – and those with slightly higher IQ’s than PJM trolls – see the ridiculousness of it.

Take your bullshit and try peddling it to the millions who have escaped that crap. They’ll laugh in your face to hear such ignorant, naive, uneducated rants.”

Well, we can thank the lord that your daughter isn’t captive of the private health insurance crime syndicate. If that were the case they would just wait her out hoping she would drop dead so that she isn’t a burden to the shareholders and their ability to take spa vacations. But don’t take my word for it, consider the words of veteran Rick Tanner, an American who loves his government-run health care.

After serving in Vietnam and spending three decades in the U.S. Navy, Tanner retired in 1991 with a bad knee and high blood pressure. He enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration and now benefits from comprehensive treatment with few co-payments and an electronic records system more advanced than almost anywhere at private hospitals.

“The care is superb,” said Tanner, 66, a San Diego resident who visits the veterans medical center in La Jolla, California, and a clinic in nearby Mission Valley. The record- keeping, he said, is “state of the art.”
….

Researchers publishing in the New England Journal of Medicine, the British Medical Journal and the Annals of Internal Medicine in recent years have endorsed the system. A Canadian policy journal, Healthcare Papers, devoted an entire issue to it in 2005.

“The VHA’s experiences have become a model around the world,” the editor-in-chief of Healthcare Papers, Peggy Leatt, wrote at the time.

The government is both payer and provider of care to the veterans, employing 19,000 salaried doctors in 153 medical centers and more than 900 outpatient clinics. Last year, 5.1 million veterans were treated, and millions more are enrolled.

“I really get annoyed every time I hear these talking heads talking about ‘the government can’t run anything,’” said John Rowan, 64, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America, who visits a New York clinic for complications from contact with the chemical Agent Orange. “Most veterans would give it a fairly good rating.”

You people cut off your nose to spite your face. Too bad for your daughter that she has a father that would actually work against her interests. Pathetic. We certainly need to put our veterans first. the first step in doing so is educating ignorant fathers because most veterans love their socialized medicine but don’t take my word for it you bumbling old fool.

It’s a “sh*t taco” for the Dems – as even CBS has figured out. CBS is worried that conservatives will use this as a weapon. Oh, yes, we will. It’s a beauty.

Ace summed it up well:

“The DNC says anyone who’s laughing at Obama “sides with the Taliban.”

They seem to have forgotten that the White House just declared the Taliban a non-enemy and furthermore said the Taliban should share in governing.

So they’re saying we should share in government? I think they’ll get that wish.

This is the problem that the Nobel committee has tossed into Captain Wonderful’s lap.

Real unemployment is at 17%, he tripled the deficit to $1.4 trillion, we’re looking at possibly two generations (40 years!) of economic malaise and endless debt, Iran’s about to get the bomb, he continues to dither on Afghanistan, a war he swore he’d win, he’s a hyperpartisan archliberal (at best), he can’t get his own party to vote for his leftwing healthcare plan, his primary community-organizer supporters moonlight as child-sex-trade enablers, etc.

Obama does not want voters thinking very hard about The Question — this one, whether voters support him, or even think he’s competent at all — at this time. He would very much like them to delay thinking about this question until he gets a little bit of good news.

This ridiculous, laughable non-achievement not earned by Obama forces the public to start answering The Question at the nadir – so fa-ar! — of his young, failed presidency.

And he didn’t need that.

His ego wanted the prize and overwhelmed what little sense he had. Had he thought this through, he would have realized he did not want people asking The Question “Does this guy know what the hell he’s doing?” now.”

Hey, Don’t Save Me From Government Health Care!

The whole health care debate has been completely confusing to me and a lot of the veterans and troops I talk with every day. See, for us, most of us got free, government-run health care.

First, troops in the Active Duty component and their families get TRICARE, the largest component in the military health care system, which allows them to go to military hospitals and doctors, as needed, and reimburses them for medical costs at private doctors, if they have to go there. For all intents and purposes, it’s a mix of the British system (government provided health care) and the Canadian system (a single-payer government run system). The system is so good that virtually every veterans advocacy group has backed extending it fully to the National Guard and Reserve, since they are being deployed now more than ever.

Basically, it’s a force readiness issue — giving this kind of care to troops — and why support for extending it to the Guard and Reserve is so strong. With all the added pressures from wars and increasing natural disasters, it’s essential that all our service members are given preventative care, to ensure they’re ready when we need them. We’re simply a stronger nation when our troops are kept healthy.

For many, there’s also the Department of Veterans Affairs. This is almost exactly like the British system of care. The government builds the hospitals and clinics. The government pays doctors, nurses, administrators, and others a salary. For those with service-connected injuries and disabilities sustained in war, the VA is invaluable. So much so, in fact, that every veterans group has tried to expand eligibility for VA care.

Finally, there’s also what’s called TRICARE For Life; basically the opportunity for many veterans to reenter the TRICARE system later on. And after you reach the Federal retirement age, that old government-run TRICARE will supplement your government-run Medicare, so you have little or no out-of-pocket expense.

So what’s the point here?

Even at the worst of times, when the Bush administration underfunded the VA by billions, leading to backlogs and some real horror stories, the Veterans Health Administration, which administers care, consistently hovered at 80 percent approval among its patients, higher than those in the private system. With the funding improvements in the budget and new construction of hospitals and clinics through the stimulus program, those numbers will absolutely go higher.

TRICARE has been rated the insurance plan with the highest customer satisfaction — better than any private plan for six years running!

Those on the Right keep harping on how they’re looking to “save” the American people from the horrors and evils of government-run insurance and care. Well, troops and veterans don’t want to be saved! In fact, when completely fabricated and false rumors started spreading that health reform would mean troops and veterans being tossed back into the private system, the major Veteran Service Organizations freaked out and wrote a letter to Congress demanding that they NOT be thrown back to for-profit care.

A final point: If government-run insurance and care is so evil and so horrible, then why do conservatives keep supporting leaving America’s troops and veterans in that kind of system? Do conservatives hold America’s warriors in such low standing that they’d subject us to a “Nazi” system, us Rush Limbaugh has called it?

You can’t have it both ways. Either TRICARE and the VA are superior systems, worthy of our sacrifice, and thus a government-managed health system can be great. Or, they’re terrible, scary, and Communist-Nazi schemes that have to be eliminated, leaving troops and veterans to find their own care for their lost limbs, brain injuries, and other wounds.

America’s veterans and troops would say the former. It’s why for years they have fought to expand the government programs, not kill them. That’s why we find it so confusing that conservatives want to bar the doors and keep those Americans who want to be in a public system from even having that choice.

Is our private insurance perfect? No. Neither is our local grocery store, but I still wouldn’t want the government running it.

We can all pull various stories of VA successes and failures from our asses all night, if necessary. Likewise, we could all pull private insurance successes and failures as well.

None of it will do a thing to change the fact that it is not the government’s job to run health care. Or banks. Or car companies. Or the energy industry. It is not their job to tell us what to do – it’s our job to tell them.

And now that you’ve sidelined the topic at hand (did Obama deserve the Nobel?), I’ll add this: yes, he deserved the Nobel. Why? Because it is a meaningless award given by dipshits to other dipshits. Since he’s a member in good standing in the International Dipshits Society, I’d say he definitely deserved the award.

Oct 9, 2009 - 11:45 pm 220. JL:

As a conservative it’s perplexing, when something like this happens. How can a person win a peace price without having accomplished anything? Then it hits me again. Liberals don’t care about results. It’s the good intentions that counts. How could I forget it? That’s why Obama can get an award despite not having any results under his belt. I have to remind myself that having good intentions is, for a liberal, a result in it self. Going out and saying “give peace a chance” counts as an actual accomplishment.

Sometimes I have wondered how liberals can stand living in their dysfunctional communities. Then I remind myself, that it’s the intention that’s important. Raising taxes on the rich to give to the poor is the “good intention”. The fact that raising taxes creates unemployment and slows the economy – Well that’s no problem. Those are just results and thus can be ignored. It’s the original good intention that counts.

Alas the less you know as a liberal the better. The less you know about any cause and effect relationship, the easier it is to have good intentions without having to worry about those “annoying” realities inflicting on your positive self image.

Our job as conservatives is to be the grown ups. Our job is to go out and take those necessary concrete actions that actually produces real results in the real world. And we will do it despite the fact that liberals will hate us for it. We’l do it despite the fact that the liberals in a their normal state of complete ignorant bliss will be reaping the benefits of our actions.

Bush sacrificed his popularity in order to remove a genocidal, stalinist dictator who had waged war on his country and his country’s neighbors throughout his reign of terror and who was still in breach of the terms of the ceasefire after 12 years and 17 U.N. Resolutions.

Today Iraq is at peace with its neighbors and its government does not terrorize its citizens. Bush solved Iraq. Obama will not solve Iran or Afghanistan.

Not even the possibility of genocide was enough to persuade Obama not to advocate abandoning Iraq to al Qaeda and Iran. Conservatives should have their own Peace Prize. The first recipient should go to the man who liberated 28 million Iraqis. But for him, there would be two nations pursuing nuclear weapons in the Middle East, and not just one.

Jazz Shaw is an upside down embarrassment to this site.

Oct 10, 2009 - 6:35 am 227. FCCS(SW/AW) Jeff Weimer, USN:

207. Praetorian:

You can’t have it both ways with the VA. either Bush caused all that backlog (which is not true), or it’s still very good. The fact remains that Obama tried to shunt VA mandated care off to the recipient’s private insurance as a way of not spending more money on veterans, but had to back off due to the outcry generated by the American Legion.

TRICARE is really employer-provided care, it’s just that the employer runs all aspects of the system, except for family dental and the administration of TRICARE itself. Now I know a little bit about TRICARE and the military medical system, and we use it extensively. We have a special needs child born with brain-related birth defects that require use of a lot of expensive specialists, many who are not available at our military treatment facility (MTF). Now, TRICARE is run very much like an HMO or PPO, meaning we have to go to doctors that are members of the plan. If we don’t we will be charged the difference between the authorized payment and the doctor’s bill, much like Medicare.

It also has a priority system – Active Duty first, then Active Duty dependents, then retirees, then retiree dependents. It’s very possible you must wait for an extensive period of time to be seen at an MTF. Luckily, we can get a referral to a private Doctor if there is no room, or they don’t have the right specialist. That is only possible because we have a robust private sector. I shudder to think what will happen if all doctors are under a similar system – many specialists will be squeezed out by arbitrary payment rules, leaving those left with a higher workload and longer waits for care – much like the British and Canadian systems the Captain touts.

Also, the VA, TRICARE and TFL are benefits earned by the servicemembers, not an entitlement granted to them. It is only available during their term of service. Retirees are entitled to TRICARE Prime at subsidized rates after they have served 20 years or more, but the are also free to turn it down.

There is also the matter of demographics. The military and it’s retirees are a small subset of the population at large, are on average younger, and are screened at induction for their physical health. As a consequence, TRICARE’s expenditures for expensive treatments such as cancer are lower than the rest of the nation. And even then, it’s expenses are rising faster than inflation.

It would be nice to ramp this up to include everyone, but it does nothing to control costs. It is very good on the retail (patient) end, however. It’s primary goal is military readiness, and that includes families in that it helps maintain morale of the servicemember. It is not quite cost-is-no-object, since it is budgeted, but controlling costs in not a primary goal.

If you want to control costs, you need to remove the opaque cost disconnect between providers and patients, and nothing we have today, including private insurance, does enough. Nothing proposed by the Democrats solves that problem either, but actually makes them worse by shuffling costs from discrete line items to various taxes, may of them hidden from the consumer’s view (like the proposed Baucus medical devices tax).

Some have expected the Prize to go to a real person, not to an empty suit. THEY booed. And o.c. the majority of the Western “journalists” (marxist propagandists) were happy. THEY applauded.

No anal obsession here, Preatty, just reasonable inferrence – while the traditional acception of the Praetorian term is that of a Roman soldier of a special corps assigned to defend the imperator, many, and justifiedly so, laugh off the heroic connotations of the term because, as the time passed, the Praetorians became a pompous homosexual crew, nothing short of Egypt’s Mameluks -

Now reviewing your logic – had you signed your pieces of wisdom as “Mattachine”, must I, when putting a face on you, describe you as… a stamps collecting former cosmonaut?

Besides, nobody is criticizing the President for receiving the prize; they are criticizing the committee for awarding it to him. To FCCS(SW/AW) Jeff Weimer, USN: That “opaque cost disconnect” is deliberate and just part of the overall systemic misbehavior that have infected our health care system. In this case, by making it very difficult for patients to actually see what the actual detailed costs are, and where the money is going, that makes comparison nearly impossible. Removing it would actually mean more regulation, watchguarding, and penalties for noncompliance. Not that knowing would help all that much — how many people would actually abandon his/her doctor and affiliated hospital to save money?

The important thing is that this is a debt we owe them, we don’t owe you or anyone else who didn’t serve squat. None of the vets could possibly be taking more out of the VA than they put in, because what they put in in blood, sweat and tears to produce the freedom we hold dear is far more valuable than what it costs to provide them with health care for the rest of their lives, even if they’re brain damaged as a result of combat wounds.

RE #99 and farther/ Praetorian [...] This is why they cozy up with terrorists like Hamas and the Taliban in ridiculing American accomplishments and prestige. [...]

Pretty, you spent some time and microvolts trying to dodge the essence of the dicussion – what are Soetoro’s accomplishments that warranted his receiving the Nobel Prize?

I offer you again a punch bag to begin with, answer and enlarge:

Obama’s feats are accomplishments?

Praetorian, explain these accomplishments, then add add more – feel free to use your own words (and if you can find in my chalenge some scat obsession, that comes probably from the fact that we’re talking about hope’n change).
Do it buddy, you sure can pull it -

I sure am glad that PJM takes threats seriously and reports them to law enforcement.

Actually, threats made by commenters as well as those made outside of PJM, I believe should be taken seriously.

John Early and wife Kay, who were attempting to vote at a Philadelphia polling place last November, in fact, were threatened by two Black Panthers standing in the doorway. And they took it seriously.

One went so far as to brandish a nightstick and wear what looked like a holster. Moreover, he told my friends John and Kay, “Whitey, if you don’t vote for Obama, you better not walk out that front door.”

John reported them to the Philadelphia police just like PJM encourages you do do if threatened in here.

The police arrived, carted one Panther off, and eventually two panthers and the entity (the black panthers) were charged federally with voter intimidation.

Barack Obama and Eric Holder, both who claim to be champions of civil rights cases, after the Black Panthers failed to show up in court (which is the equivalent of a guilty virdict) decided to drop the case.

The obvious reason: the black panthers are tied at the hip to ACORN, the voter fraud machine, which likewise is tied at the hip to Barack Obama.

Here’s my point if you’re not getting it.

What good is reporting threats to law enforcement if law enforcement won’t enforce the law?

Is it within the law to threaten communist sympathizers like now and then, vivo, n & t et al? Is it within the law to track into their personal information? Is it within the law to intimidate them?

If the chief law enforcers of this country refuse to enforce the law against law breaking Black Panthers, does that mean we live in a state of anarchy where anything goes?

I know the trolls in here think they’re safe. But, with the suspension of the 14th amendment by actions of the President and attorney general, Eric Holder, how safe are they really? How safe are any of us?

Only time will tell.

The entire community came together and raised lots of money with numerous fundraisers partnering with various local businesses to pay for her therapy. That was the attitude the Dems had in 1994. History will repeat in 2010 with the rebuke of the Dems for theft, destroying the economy, increasing inflation by destroying the buying power of the dollar, ruining our once great sick care system, and loading future generations with crippling debt. Ground control to jharp:

PRINCETON, NJ — Roughly a year before the 2010 midterm elections, Gallup finds the Republican and Democratic Parties nearly tied in the congressional ballot preferences of registered voters. Forty-six percent of registered voters say they would vote for the Democrat and 44% say the Republican when asked which party’s candidate they would support for Congress, if the election were held today.

The Democratic Party held a slightly wider, six percentage-point lead on this important indicator of party strength in July, 50% to 44%. However, both 2009 results show a more competitive political environment than Gallup has generally seen since before the Democrats regained control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2006 midterm elections. Closer to elections, Gallup bases its results on “likely voters.” Doing so typically improves the Republicans’ positioning by several points; thus, when Democrats lead slightly among registered voters, it is possible for Republicans to be ahead among likely voters.

The Republican Party’s relatively strong position on the generic ballot in the latest poll, conducted Oct. 1-4, stems from the support of political independents, who now favor Republican over Democratic candidates by 45% to 36%. In July, independents were evenly divided in their party voting preferences, whereas last fall they showed a clear preference for the Democrats

So, the “nutwing” teaparties and town halls resulted in – the Dems losing ground. And there is still a year to go before the mid-terms. I predict they’ll lose much more ground in that year – not a risky prediction considering what a hash they’re making of the *snicker* “liberal moment.” The independents are moving toward the Republicans. That ought to worry any lib with a lick of sense.

But of course, jharp doesn’t have a lick of sense. Sonny, you really need to stop taking Daily Kos and HuffPo polls seriously.

Without creating much of a stir, he has notified our enemies that they need not fear us, and our allies that they cannot count on us.

Meanwhile, Iran arms itself for the coming annihilation of 6 million Jews, and the world prepares iself by stigmatizing Israel and legitimizing anti-Semitism.

You are liable for defamation. When have I said I was a communist or anything else?

You can track all you want: it all goes back to YOU . . . Ask your doctor about delirium tremens, u r really cracking up.

Threaten, track, intimidate? How Big Brother of you. I thought you would support the First Amendment. I guess you do, so long as what’s being said agrees with your opinions. Sounds like that leftist education your daddy is paying for isn’t going to waste. Well done, Comrade! You will rise quickly in the ranks of the neo-Stasi.

Me? I’ll stick with freedom – you know, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You should try that angle some day. It’s much better than the raging victimhood of your elite class.

It is unlawful to threaten anyone with physical harm. You can be prosecuted. It is also unlawful to defame persons by publishing false claims (e.g. “communist sympathizers”) about them, if such claims cause injury and are not privileged. It is lawful to track personal information, although harassment and stalking laws may restrict the means and methods.

Intimidation is the tactic favored by terrorists. If intimidation rises to the level of a threat, it is illegal.

I know the trolls in here think they’re safe. But, with the suspension of the 14th amendment by actions of the President and attorney general, Eric Holder, how safe are they really? How safe are any of us?

Only time will tell.

I don’t pretend that I am safe. I am well aware that posting under my real name exposes me to the tactics you have mentioned. However, I am also quite willing to take that risk. I would not be the first patriot to die in defense of the United States Constitution, nor the last.

Peace.

No he hasn’t he tucked his tail and ran. He’s a real tough guy when he thought he’d have a bunch of police and such to back him up(and maybe a lawsuit as well the leecher)… he’s not so brave when he won’t have a bunch of armed guard to protect his “freedom of stupidity”.

“It is also unlawful to defame persons by publishing false claims (e.g. “communist sympathizers”) about them, if such claims cause injury and are not privileged.”

Not even close… first you would need to “publish” those claims and for that you’d need to either own a major newspaper/radio station/TV station. Then they have to shows the claims are false(which now and then, vivo, david S, etc would fail at). Then and only then could you manage to win… and lets say you win… what damages have been inflicted. Well its doubtful any so other then lawyer fees you’d get nothing.

“I would not be the first patriot to die in defense of the United States Constitution, nor the last.”

I find it laughable that someone who is a flaming commie with the intend to enslave most of the world and overthrow the US Constitution(and thats just from skimming your blog) thinks that they are somehow a “patriot”…. it is ppl like you that make me sick. Why don’t you go back to killing jews or blacks or whatever race you don’t like this year because you feel you are so superior to them.

Jho’:

“Yep, and that was the attitude the founders had when they wrote the U.S. Constitution. Specifically when they granted the Congress the power to tax.”

You historical ignoramus! The Framers in their wisdom expressly *denied* the Federal government that power. Madison wrote to (the anti-Federalist) Patrick Henry that the inability of the Feds to levy direct taxes was one of the two principle guarantees against its their tyrannical (he was right). The Framers endorse Robin Hood???? Men who believed the solefunction of government was to protect life, liberty, and the possession of private property?

No, it was Wilson and the Progressives who imposed the Income Tax on us, and began us down the slippery slope into a system and philosophy based on THEFT and COERCION. That’s all progressivism amounts to, however much you try to pretty it up.

Where on earth were you taught that it was American to demand the government provide you with Free Stuff? You have NO right to other men’s labor.

Praetorian-

Why am I so unsurprised that a lib would choose a handle taken from the Emperors’ goon squad? After all, they called the SS “Hitler’s Praetorians” for a reason. Rule by fiat, a society ordered at the pleasure of an elite, with bread and circuses for the proles- yep, that’s liberalism. The difference between a welfare state and a totalitarian one is nugatory.

It just cracks me up that you as an enemy of everything that is a truly American virtue, an advocate for the soft serfdom of decadent, dying Europe, would feebly attempt the Humpty Dumpty stunt of calling *us* un-American!

Hint: The side whose philosophy aligns with the Framers and their inspirations Locke and Montesquieu (and to an extent Burke) are the real Americans.

Jharp, what is the shame in begging? If a homeless person begs me for money, I’ll give him some if I can afford it, and if I can’t, I’ll try to help some other way by pointing out some way he can earn money right away. If, however, the same man were to break into my dorm room, I’d stab him with a kitchen knife. There is no shame in asking for help from your neighbors if you need it, but there is no justification for theft.

Obviously, the Peace Prize is a joke.

The only isssue here is to make sure that the prize money doesn’t go into the hands of corrupt American politicians (of the lefty stripe) who shouldn’t be allowed to take money from foreign interests while they hold public office.

Our lefty pols take enough bribes from domestic groups, they shouldn’t be allowed to be bought by foreigners.

Publishing to the internet is sufficient. Traditional media is not required to defame someone.

Then they have to shows the claims are false(which now and then, vivo, david S, etc would fail at).

It would be pretty easy to show that the claims are false, since there is absolutely no factual support for them.

Then and only then could you manage to win… and lets say you win… what damages have been inflicted. Well its doubtful any so other then lawyer fees you’d get nothing.

I don’t think the financial reward would be the motivating factor here…

I find it laughable that you come to such absurd conclusions so easily and handily. I suppose you have some quotes to share about my intent to enslave the world and overthrow the US Constitution in between my screeds on health care reform and the important of the first amendment? Give me a break.

it is ppl like you that make me sick. Why don’t you go back to killing jews or blacks or whatever race you don’t like this year because you feel you are so superior to them.

See, this is why nobody likes Republicans – instead of addressing the arguments and ideas, you would rather just demonize anyone who dares to disagree with you. My family are jews, and my friends are from every race – your projection is showing, and it’s not pretty. You feel you must have someone to tear down in order to build yourself up.

You might want to check your own racism before you start making accusations against others.

Peace.

“Publishing to the internet is sufficient. Traditional media is not required to defame someone.”

Yes if its in a big newspaper/radio station/TV station… a comment section and even most blogs are not even close.

“It would be pretty easy to show that the claims are false, since there is absolutely no factual support for them.”

Have you read some of the comments made by now and then, vivo, david S, etc or seen this site http://onpjm.blogspot.com/

If you bother to read you would see their is not doubt they are pro-commie/pro-nazi. So take the time to educate yourself.

“I find it laughable that you come to such absurd conclusions so easily and handily. I suppose you have some quotes to share about my intent to enslave the world and overthrow the US Constitution in between my screeds on health care reform and the important of the first amendment? I would suggest you review this site this it is choke full of proof. http://onpjm.blogspot.com/
Or how about the belief that critics should be shut down… like say

“It is also unlawful to defame persons by publishing false claims (e.g. “communist sympathizers”) about them, if such claims cause injury and are not privileged.”

Clearly this person is not a big fan of the first amendment…

“See, this is why nobody likes Republicans – instead of addressing the arguments and ideas, you would rather just demonize anyone who dares to disagree with you. ”

And this is why ppl like you are retarded and know nothing. I’m not “republican” I’m right-wing… and yes I “demonize” all the left wingers BECAUSE YOU ARE RACIST EVIL HATEFUL RELIGIOUS NUT JOBS WHO ONLY SEEK TO KILL ANYONE WHO ISN’T LEFT WING(and even left wingers)…. or is it they just demonize themselves by being left wing…

“My family are jews, and my friends are from every race – your projection is showing, and it’s not pretty.”

Wow the projection here is massive.

“You feel you must have someone to tear down in order to build yourself up.”

If I needed to “tear someone down” as you put it I wouldn’t pick a weak kneed retard like you to do it. I have lots of ppl in iraq and afgan to kill to “build myself up” as you say. The last thing I need to “build myself up” is some computer geek blogging about how he’s a racist and commie and that he’s to cowardly to do anything else. At least in iraq and afgan ppl like you are man enough to step out of the battlefield…your nothing but a joke to me. To even believe that you are somehow important enough for me to “build myself up upon” clearly shows you are an egomaniac self important elitist.

“You might want to check your own racism before you start making accusations against others.”

Someone like you might want to first know what racism is then understand it… because if you knew what racism was and even slightly understood it you would understand that you are a racist.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh baal you are the man! I’ll bet you make women and children shiver when you walk by. You think hiding behind your keyboard and publishing the name of another poster makes you virile? Well it only makes you another obsequious dimwit. Your threats are meaningless from a distance whether it be 100 miles or 3000. You only come across as foolish and childish. Get a life.
