Guilty … of Being Right: An Interview with Ann Coulter

The conservative flamethrower discusses her new book, the media's affection for liberals, and how to combat the left.

Ann Coulter needs no introduction as she is probably the most famous conservative in America. Yet here at Pajamas Media we believe in being thorough, so one will be provided anyway.

Ms. Coulter started out her career as a lawyer, graduating from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was an editor of the Michigan Law Review. Ms. Coulter practiced law in New York City and then worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee. She also was a litigator for the Washington, D.C., Center for Individual Rights.

After that she became absolutely fabulous — or at least absolutely notorious. In this year of America’s would-be messiah, Barack Obama, Ms. Coulter is the bête noir of the mainstream media. Our biased press overseers despise many individuals but none more so than the enduring and menacing Ms. Coulter.

As a writer, her work is a skillful war upon the lies and pathologies of the political left. Her technique is to use emotion, humor, and reason as a means to undo the conventional wisdom that is political correctness, a “wisdom” that has so disgracefully blackened our times. She stands as a bulwark against cultural Marxism and sets a magnificent example for other conservatives to follow.

As she suggests to me below, she’s penned a multitude of best sellers. Indeed, at the time this introduction was written, her latest book, Guilty: Liberal “Victims” and Their Assault on America, is number two on the New York Times Best Seller List (even though they conspicuously decided not to review it).

Previously, she published If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must), Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism, Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right, and High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton. Ms. Coulter also maintains a website of her own in which her weekly columns for the Universal Press Syndicate can be found.

***

BC: Ms. Coulter, congratulations on the release of Guilty: Liberal “Victims” and Their Assault on America. Personally, I thought it was your best work since Treason. Just in case there’s anyone who has not heard of the book, what is its overall theme?

Ann Coulter: Liberals play victim in order to advance, oppress, and create real victims. In other words, they are like the fireman who goes around setting fires.

BC: It seems that the left hates you more than any other conservative figure.

Ann Coulter: Thank you.

BC: You’re welcome, but this is an incredible accomplishment in my view. You can always tell a person’s worth by the vileness of their enemies. What’s your opinion as to why they deride you so?

Ann Coulter: Because they’re spineless little girls in pretty dresses who can’t play rough because it musses up their hair. The women are even worse.

BC: I watched your interviews on the The Today Show, The Early Show, and The View. What I found most glaring was the complete dishonesty on the part of the interviewer-hosts. They pretend to be average persons when they are, in fact, leftists. This seems a ubiquitous practice among our opponents. Overall, how much of their electoral success depends on deception?

Ann Coulter: It’s amazing that Republicans ever win any elections with the most powerful institution in America — the mainstream media — trying to turn all conservatives into this week’s Emmanuel Goldstein, while treating the most ghastly liberals as if they are sparkling Adonises. (See my chapter, “Brave, Beautiful Liberals.”) There wouldn’t be a Democratic Party without the mainstream media propping it up.

BC: The funniest thing about your appearances in the media is the fashion by which they attempt to keep you from speaking. Frankly, are not such attempts an admission of weakness on their part?

Ann Coulter: Yes.

BC: And do you think that conservatives would be transcendent if our voices were equally heard?

Ann Coulter: Yes.

BC: I must say that I am filled with admiration for the way you sat before those inquisitors/twits on The View and remained dignified throughout. Apart from publicly displaying your bravery, what’s the payoff from appearing alongside those demented harpies?

Ann Coulter: Being around that bunch makes me feel younger and more attractive! It’s like going to a spa.

BC: Do you have any untelevised comments from that appearance you wish to share? Perhaps something along the lines of their lambasting you during a commercial break?

Ann Coulter: Actually I think the show speaks very well for itself. That’s why the video is linked on my webpage, www.anncoulter.com. Only liberals try to recast their public TV appearances later, in fictional versions where they look good and the conservative looks bad. See, e.g., the movie Frost/Nixon — and I don’t mean actually go see the movie; just consider the utter insanity of developing a fictional version of what was a live TV interview. Rewriting history is bad enough, but now they’re rewriting television interviews. Next, I expect Alan Colmes to release a movie Hannity & Colmes in which the actor playing Colmes suddenly wins all the arguments.

Viva la Ann

*Chuckles*

She’s so much fun to hear from.

This line is hilarious:
“Some publishing houses do, but they’re going out of business. Recessions are good for people selling things consumers actually want.”

So true.

Feb 1, 2009 - 11:37 pm 3. Typewriter_King:

The reason they can’t portray Ann as an airhead is that she has the credentials they most respect, she was a law review editor. The best they can do is insist she’s a notch below the Columbia Law Review editor.

Those of us that went another route in life, like Rush and Glenn Beck, are easier to pick at (even though Rush’s brother David holds the same views, and is well credentialed).

Was this interview conducted over email? There are a few clues in the transcript, like Ann having to tell you she thought of something off the top of her head in a few seconds. It sounds like something someone would say firing off a quick email response, more than in a live conversation.

It is not bête noir but bête noirE (bête is feminine in French).

if only she wasn’t so obnoxious….but then that’s how she makes money.

AC looks like a whore, talks like a whore, walks like a whore . . could she possibly be a whore?

Her principle is to sell her soul to make a lot of money. She’s successful because “there is a sucker born every minute”.

I don’t pity her. I pity the fools.

Feb 2, 2009 - 2:24 am 7. formwiz:

vivo is obviously into projection. Ad hominem (or, in this case, feminem) is the last resort of someone without a real argument. That’s why the Left uses it so much.

Feb 2, 2009 - 3:47 am 8. Brian Richard Allen:

Good to see those suffering from the FasciSSocialist Psychosis are still as consumed as ever by their driving envy, hatred, rage and resentment, vivo. Can hardly wait to see how uyou and your ilk feel after the few days, two weeks at most, it will take until the mobbed-up murtadd Muslim Marxist Arab-African’s besquatting and bemanuring of our once most hallowed house has caused his Crime Family’s “administration’s” collapse around his Toby Jug lugs.

And you aught to meet the lady, mik, before you attempt another mischaracterization. Ms Coulter is an absolutely delightful person, impeccably well mannered, kind, attentive, softly spoken — and as humble as any Human Being you will ever know!

Ann Coulter: a Dagny Taggart without the railroad?

She reminds me of the characters played by Katherine Hepburn in the late ’30s and early ’40s: smart, funny, irreverent, and almost always right.

The cognitive dissonance is strong with this one.

Coulter’s “take down” of evolution sealed her reputation as someone not to be taken seriously by anyone except the dinosaur (sorry, Jesus-horse) right.

My favorite line from your interview is the “spa” feeling she revels in after being on stage with those screaming krones the view bags.

Truly an angel in our midst.

Wish she were utilized better by the GOP.

Feb 2, 2009 - 5:35 am 14. Magic:

Liberals play the victim role to get the pity response. The sheeple in America love the underdog and if you can convince them you are, they will vote for any empty suit (Obama, Biden, Piglosi, Reid, Murtha, Franks, Dodd, the list is endless).

I love Coulter. She plays the left like a fiddle and every single time, they rise to fight her. And she laughs her way to the bank. (case in point: Vivo and Boris)

I actually read a couple of her books and they are pretty good. Plus she’s been on RedEye a few times and anyone who can put up with Schulz and Gutfeld is alright in my book.

Vivo, how wonderful to hear that you believe in the existence of the soul. Will your be going to Heaven or that other place you don’t believe in either?
Oh, by the way, one “sucker” out of every four dies from choice. Cool, right…

Funny that someone would bring up evolution. With the atheist and evolutionists arguments literally coming apart like wet tissue paper.I imagine Ann Coulter is the scariest thing they can fantasize about.

If Ann Coulter was a liberal, she would be honored with the Nobel Peace Prize, you know it. They would love everything about her if she mercifully castigated conservatives. The meaner the better with those folks.

I wish Ann would come spend a day with me. My own personal “crap bodyguard.”

Feb 2, 2009 - 7:05 am 22. Bonnie_:

Darwin didn’t have the electron microscope, so his theory is designed around the concept that a single cell is a simple organism. Now that we know cells are incredibly complex, Darwinists are scrambling around trying to explain macroevolution with “lightning strikes” and “extraterrestrial spores.” If I were a Darwinist, I’d use “Merlin’s Magic Wand” as my theory. It sounds nifty and makes as much sense as a lightning strike.

And no human can observe Ann Coulter without concluding that God is real, He loves us, and wants us to be happy!

Feb 2, 2009 - 7:16 am 23. JH Spyker:

It’s penetrating interviews like this that have made PJs such a roaring success!

Feb 2, 2009 - 7:17 am 24. Rob De Witt:

Anybody wanna bet on how many of her detractors have read her books? I’m still waiting for “Guilty” from the library (a long waiting list, even in this most Liberal county in the country [according to the Congressional Record]), but “High Crimes and Misdemeanors”, “Slander”, “Treason”, “Godless” et al are models of densely researched and trenchant argument. Plus she cracks me up.

The woman is a genius, with God’s own gift for self-promotion. Wotta gal.

Feb 2, 2009 - 7:19 am 25. Jim Baker:

I have read three of Ann’s books and they are very good salve for the conservative who feels weary from the daily barrage of socialist pap. She gives it back to them in every same way she gets it from them. Most of us wish we had time to do that, because we do know that when it gets right down to it, socialists are losers and they know it. I had this book on my Christmas list but it didn’t come out in time for Christmas, so I will gladly buy it this year.

Feb 2, 2009 - 7:45 am 26. Boris:

And no human can observe Ann Coulter without concluding that God is real, He loves us, and wants us to be happy!

Truly, Ann Coulter is Jesus in heels. lol.

“And no human can observe Ann Coulter without concluding that God is real, He loves us, and wants us to be happy!”

Interesting piont-of-view, considering she is a person filled with an incredible amount of vile and hatred, you believe that we can see a being of love through her.

Feb 2, 2009 - 7:53 am 28. sambo hux:

She smokes. She drinks. She’s never been married. She can’t quite figure out the whole voting thing. She says women should “keep their legs together until they’re married.” So, I guess Ann’s a virgin. And that’s a shame because she is so attractive, not in that “pretty” way but in that “I’ll give you another gram if you snort it off my Glock” way. Ann, you’re the All American girl – raised in privilege, insulated from responsibility, and now moving through the latter part of your life with all the alacrity and delusion our celebrity culture bestows.

Allow me to indulge in her formula: Every soldier who died in Iraq is a coward. The only reason conservatives are Republicans is because they know America won’t elect Nazis. Nancy Reagan married Ronald Reagan on the rebound after Frank Sinatra turned down her offer of a BJ in the coat room at the Copa.

There you go, another steaming pantload of marketing elitism from this silly old polemicist . . . ME!

Feb 2, 2009 - 7:57 am 29. Steve P.:

You guys know that all her vitriol is an act and that she dates liberals, right?

Just thought you guys would like to be aware that your beloved blonde right-wing bombshell tells you all what you’d like to hear to get you all worked up, takes your money and uses it to buy lingere to appease her liberal dude.

Feb 2, 2009 - 8:10 am 30. Joe Bison:

Liberal fundamentalists are incensed by
Coulter making money from writing books? Well
she doesn’t live off the public purse like most
liberals for one thing[swivel servant, grant,
welfare, prison etc].

She actually has to produce something people
want. You cut that off and you shut her up-
wait that is what the liberals want!

If BS liberal newspapers actually wanted to
sell papers they would have Coulter and Steyn
writing for them. However, they would rather
push a political viewpoint instead. A token
RHINO will have to suffice.

Feb 2, 2009 - 8:11 am 31. Jack:

Bonnie, cells ARE simple organisms. This has not changed–nor is it disputed. Are they more complex than thought in Darwin’s time–absolutely. But that does not change the simple observable fact that animals with features that make them better at propagation become the dominant strains of their species–or that the process can continue until one of two things happens. They dominant strain can replace the rest of it’s kind–and all the members of that species will have the trait(change over time, what ‘creationists call ‘micro-evolution’) or the dominant strain can breed so well that it is able to move into a different niche in the ecology, leaving behind the other strain and breeding exclusively with others who share the trait(speciation–what creationists call ‘macro-evolution’). Both of these things can be demonstrated in a laboratory.

And neither deny the existence of God.

The theory of evolution has become tarred with the actions of atheists and leftists who seek to use it to prove their positions correct.

But it must be remembered that Darwin was not trying to disprove the existence of God, or deny the Creation. He was, at worst, simply trying to understand it.

Feb 2, 2009 - 8:29 am 36. Rob De Witt:

Laura,

Glad you’re an intelligent conservative, and outspoken woman, but you do men an enormous disservice (as Coulter does not) in assuming “men are terrified of this woman”.

It should be apparent, if only from this comment stream, that many men find intelligent women enormously attractive, particularly when they take responsibility for their own feelings as Ann Coulter does.

If all the men you meet are “terrified” of you, maybe your own choices in men should be examined. Just a thought.

Feb 2, 2009 - 8:40 am 39. Bob M:

All of Ann Coulter’s books should be required reading for the many weak-kneed, gutless, so-called Republican congressmen that we foolishy helped put into office.

I fervently believe that, after reading a few of her books, they may actually begin to grow a spine, show some guts and begin to start pushing the the Conservative values for which we elected them to do.

Those would be all welcome changes compared to the hyperventilating, hand-wringing, apologetic, milquetoasts, that, seemingly, appear to soil themselves everytime they are confronted by those ‘nasty’ liberal/socialist, democrats.

Feb 2, 2009 - 8:52 am 40. Still Bill:

Ann Coulter is a refreshing dash of icy water. Needs a follow up analogous to a vigorous towel drying and then we are ready to go get ‘em. I’d recommend Mike Huckabee’s books–Do the Right Thing, Character IS the Issue, as a chaser to bring us down to practical daily work toward overcoming the liberal lunacy. Real conservatives are going to have to get together and quit fighting each other (btw, those aiming for the highest office money/influence/double dealing can buy (e.g.,) Mitt Romney need not apply.) ‘Scuse the parentheses within parentheses please!

I have a small criticism I wish Ms. Coulter would look into. Even when you win the argument with logic, facts and case studies your opponent will leave feeling that they won the argument.

Case in point: The View. You were talking that single mothers are sabotaging their children by not providing both positive male ufemale role models. One of the View hosts decided to counter with the “You have no right to criticize” fallacy. By answering the one-two-three of: Married? Kids? You’ve got no right!! you let her be smug in her own sh*t.

20/20 hindsight I know. But if these mental adolescents leave smug they’ll never learn a thing.

Steve, darling, she’s a well respected attorney. You know, a lawyer? Has read for the law, graduated from law school, taken the bar, is a lawyer?

Of course it is discouraging to realize that a brilliant lawyer can also be incisive, witty, and able to make public appearances and defend her views. Then, to realize her books are as airtight as a legal brief… what’s a liberal to do?

Oh, I know. Make fun of her beauty, accuse her of secretly being a man, and scoff at her intelligence. Yeah, been there. Seen that. Booooring.

Feb 2, 2009 - 11:33 am 66. Rachel Peepers:

Of course, Ann Coutler is one of my heroes, along with Winston Churchill, Bill Bernback, Tom Paine and Rush Limbaugh.

But now I need more than heroes. I need help.

I hope my friends here at liberty central are in a helpful mood.

As part of my effort to run hapless Harry, niggardly Nancy and baby killer Barack out of town on a rail, I need to rename B. Hussein’s so called “Economic Stimulus Plan.

(Remember, when Reagan wanted to create the stragetic defense initiative, dem Dems, with help from their left wing media mavens, tried to deminish it by renaming it, calling it

“Star Wars”.)

Well, here’s a few new names for B. Hussein’s so called Economic Stimulus Plan.

(like we know the fairness doctrine is really the censorship doctrine)

So here’s my thoughts. Obviously, I need more. Let’s, together, pick the best one we can come up with and plaster it everywhere.

Here’s my beginning list: The Economic Senselessness Plan; The Economic Cluelessness Plan; The Economic Aimlessness Plan; The Economic Brainlessness Plan;
The Enigmatic Stimulus Plan; The Economic Goofiness Plan.

Anyway, you get the idea.

Please give it a name we can all be contemptuous of. Because it’s a total earmarked, porked up, colossal waste of your tax dollars; financial irresponsibilty I liken to this; if each of you got a thousand new credit cards and maxed them out in a day. And did it every day for the rest of the year.

It is amazing to me that there are those that find Ann acceptable if she would only act with the behavior of their image. If she did, she wouldn’t be the person she is.

She says what she does and does what she does because she is only being the person she is. She is real and there is nothing phoney about her.

Sarah Palin is the same way.

It only tells me, liberals do not like real people who think, talk and act differently than they do. They are infantilized due to being improperly developed as children and now the rest of us have to live with the consequences.

Feb 2, 2009 - 11:55 am 70. Mark Kruse:

I rather enjoy Coulter’s writing and share most of her views, but in this interview as in many others I’ve heard over the years she comes through like a bitch extraordinaire on steroids. If she is to create converts for the conservative movement (rather than preach to the converted) she must not only present solid arguments but also appear to be somewhat sympathetic and human. I may share many of her views, but would hate to have her as my next door neighbor – and I’m afraid that sentiment is shared by many. And Rush better not buy the house next door, either, even if hearing him once a month is quite entertaining.

It’s interesting to read the comments here (especially from the liberals) that accuse Ann of being mean and nasty and that lament that she is not kinder in her approach. All of these comments prove the thesis of her book: We expect her to be nicer in her words because we don’t want people to be turned off or offended. We have claimed that we are “victims” of her “nastiness”, expect her to changed her tone, and in so doing, we have created a class of victims who will never hear the truth that she speaks because we want to protect them and ourselved from her being mean.

It’s great when a plan comes together.

Are you one of the “real” people I read so much about on this board? Let me know, because I need to know whether to take your opinion seriously. If you’re not “real” then let me know what kind of person you are – digital perhaps? Anamorphic? Embryonic? Are you a zygote? Come on, it’s OK, you can tell me. Imaginary? (Scratch that one. I know conservatives have no imaginations – unless it involves splooging all over a keyboard. ) Short of identifying your “realissitude” perhaps you can tell me what I said that was untrue. One thing, that’s all.

Feb 2, 2009 - 1:35 pm 79. Sarah Burnett:

(Sigh) the trolls are out en masse today. Ann does that to libbies, drives them to distraction…or as 51. LynnS says…drives them to “expel their pent-up frustrations.” Thanks for the laugh out loud guffaw that awoke a few of my co-workers. I’ll go back to mopping up the spilled coffee in a sec.

In an interview Ann referred to the View as a magnet school for harpies in training and to them as “harp seals”. She also said they were adept at teaching people how to pretend to be a college grad.

But this is the best:

Ann said of her appearance on the view that “it was the most fun a girl could have that didn’t involve a paper gown and an ice-cold speculum.” Another guffaw!

That’s why the libbies hate her.

Ann is my hero. I only wish I could be as articulate and well organized in my arguments as she is. It is apparent to me that many liberals are fearful of the facts that she presents… so fearful that they are unwilling to even give the research she has done a serious look through. To keep myself educated, I read on both sides of the aisle and no liberal and not even any other conservative authors have the same amount of annotation and reference back to real studies as Ann does. Her arguments are air tight and that is what I love about her.

I actually had a “friend” remove me from Facebook today because she found out I was a “conservative”… what does that say about the character of the left? Other than the attacks that Boris and Vivo seem to think are intelligent and witty… But then again, Obama considers himself an intellectual elite and can’t find anything more intelligent to say to Matt Lauer than “Jessica Simpson is in a weight battle.” That’s real classy!

Thanks to you conservatives on the boards… you give me hope.

Spot on as usual, Ann! I am a proud new member of Conservatism- which is a miracle in that I have grown up and lived entirely amongst liberals in one of the most liberal states I might add! Laura:

If you smoke you are a burden to society. Smoking is the cause of much of our health care related costs. Yet you blatantly indulge in an activity proved to be harmful to yourself, your family and your country. It’s people like you who are undermining all the hard work of our brave men and women in harm’s way fighting to sustain our quality of life. You have no respect for your flag, your country or your military. How DARE you! You are tearing this great nation apart. (What, too much? Over the top? Irrelevant?)

You’re “feminine, intelligent and attractive.” I have found consistently throughout life that people who describe themselves in this way are typically the LAST people who possess these traits . . . or they wouldn’t say these things. Instead of confidence it’s a sad and transparent lack of self-esteem – something Sally Field would say.

And it’s not “fem-nazi” it’s femInazi. Here are a couple of others:

“If people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be
convicted and they ought to be sent up.” (You know he wears that cochlear implant because of deafness induced by his oxycontin addiction, right? )

“You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed.”

Is this what it takes to be “the great one” with you people? You are so lost. That’s exactly why we’re going to give you lip service about bipartisanship, but in truth, we’re going to steamroll the flatulent oversized appliances you call heroes and their sorry-ass philosophies into the small damp dark corners of American life. You’ll like it there. Nobody asks you to think. Nobody expects honesty. And everybody wears a flag pin.

Sambo hux, just out of curiousity what country are you from? Do you live the US? I am an American, a conservative one who is stuck in France for reasons someone like you could most likely NEVER understand nor relate to (my choice “stuck” not “victim stuck”, although many days I do feel a victim of socialism and pc thought control).
Oxycontin is a prescribed medication, and if you are a true liberal, you should understand that if you become addicted to prescribed narcotics, you don’t make fun of that addiction…or is that sympathy only for the people who are in the left/victim type mentality? I have no idea about Mr Limbaugh’s health problems, not my problem you know. I’ll bet your anger over this is that you smoke pot, and because you can get “sent up” for that, you need to have no sympathy for anyone else…let alone not see that the illicit trades create SO many of societys evils. And making them legal doesn’t seem to have worked for the Dutch, but I can’t remeber where I read some of that and it’s probably in French.

As for the James Earl Ray, that definitely has to be taken out of context, or I would be hugely surprized…I personally don’t listen to Rush, however many of the people that I know that do would not tolerate that at all, as they greatly and putspokenly admire Dr King, and listen to Rush.

And as for your making fun of Ms Coulter for being unkind earlier in the posts, uh not so bad yourself there in the last paragraph. Please don’t waste your brain cells slamming me back, I am not trying to slam you, just point out that you are a die hard in your politics preaching to people who will never believe that you are right, let alone more generous and kind, it is very easy to be generous and kind with other people’s money.

Vivo (113) – We find your political views to be repulsive. But wait, we all pay our taxes… It’s easy to want utopia when someone else is footing the bill. It’s like a 5 year old crying over a toy at the store – they want it, and it’s great – as long as it comes out of someone else’s pocket book.

I would be interested to know how versed you are in American history and WHY our ancestors (at least mine) fought in the Revolutionary War to secure our FREEDOM. If you understood why they fought and were willing to give their lives, you wouldn’t be a liberal. The concept of freedom (which conservatives stand for) is that you receive that which you EARN… thus, you can create ANY life you want to. Liberalist policies deny you that freedom by making you pay for other people’s bad choices.

Our tax dollars should go to pay for things that benefit EVERYONE – national security and infrastructure. The rest is state’s rights…

If you feel compelled to donate to a cause, do it through charity, not through force.

This is all the heart of Ann’s arguments which are based on sound legal knowledge which is based on our Constitution which was written to guarantee our freedoms – which are slowly being taken away one by one because of Marxist policies (note: If you have ever taken economics – which you may have, I don’t know you – you would know that even Marx himself said that socialism cannot work unless you have a society of unlimited wealth. That is a nonexistent condition on this planet – or even in this universe.

Ann is about as witty and intelligent as a Droopy is ambitious. She makes gross generalizations about liberals and everyone consumes her logic like its some sort of life force.

Face it, she is a media whore. She likes to use emotion to get people to believe her. Unfortunately her arguments lack the only real stability an argument can have; logic. She never seems to understand the idea that there are intelligent liberals that simply have different views then hers.

I am a liberal, but I don’t run around raving about the conservatives as if they were some sort of societal vampire. I don’t assume conspiracy theories that republicans ALWAYS have ulterior motives to be true.

Ann Coulter deserves neither respect nor wealth. The only thing she deserves from me is pity. Pity for her complete and utter lack of understanding. Pity for the miserably narrow-minded life she lives. And pity for her illusion of righteousness.

1. Don’t humiliate yourself by making such a pretentious statement like “if you pay taxes – which most liberals don’t, or very litte”

Do you understand just how little respect you now hold in this argument?

Here is a specific argument that I love by Ann Coulter.

She explained in an interview that she cannot believe just how much Canadians now hate America and our values. She said this because Canada sent troops to fight in vietnam and supported are actions during that conflict…

There is one minute issue in her argument… Canada never sent troops to fight in the Vietnam Conflict. Canada never officially supported the Vietnam conflict.

Another terrific argument by her is that the wives of husbands who died on 9/11 enjoyed their death and are now basking in the wealth brought about by it.

There is only one minute issue in her argument… She has absolutely no clue what these wives are going through. She doesn’t understand what it is like to have a loved one die on the national stage. Instead she accuses these widows of loving the fact that their husbands were dead and even speculates that the husbands were probably planning on divorcing them.

Is there a crazy bitch bus that Coulter can ride on?

Do you understand why many people don’t take her seriously? She can’t even get her facts straight. An ailment you clearly suffer from as well.

And from Godless:

“These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9/11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them. … I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much … the Democrat ratpack gals endorsed John Kerry for president … cutting campaign commercials… how do we know their husbands weren’t planning to divorce these harpies? The interviewer constantly repeats his assertions, but no other source supports them. These facts contradict him: The Canadian government sent troops to Vietnam in August 1954 during the partition of Vietnam. They stayed through January 1973. They incurred casualties and several deaths. Confirmation and further details appear in the articles on International Control Commission and International Commission of Control and Supervision, both of which contain extensive links and references. The government of Canada awarded medals to 1,550 of these troops for their service between August 7, 1954 and January 28, 1973.

That said, I doubt I would want to be involved with someone like Ann or you. A woman with a sharp tongue in a marriage is known as a shrew. Such a marriage is hell on Earth.

I like Ann’s work. Funny stuff, but I don’t take it too seriously. She makes some good points, and she has a grenade-throwing style. Problem with that is that the moderates get blasted as well as the Libs. It loses some of its efficacy, but her style gets her HEARD. There are plenty of other more urbane conservatives, but I never hear the Libs say much at all about them.

With that evidence, I cheer Ann on. She earns her money. She gets the conservative issues heard. They may not be well-received, but they enter the public’s consciousness. It must be done to get past the MSM filters, ’cause we’re calling to the public from far off in the wilderness.

Feb 4, 2009 - 11:49 am 169. KJ Colorado:

145. Pat J – So what basis are you using to say she is a joke? The presentation is sharply humorous, but the statistics she uses to back up those arguments are, in fact, correct. And being female I enjoy having the right to vote, but the female demographic does tend to be more uninformed about policies and candidates than does the male demographic (which she cites and annotates in said section of book – the statistics are well documented).

I am glad to see that you have at least read enough of her books to know what is in there. However, none of this proves why she is a joke… she has well researched data to support her points and I can guarantee you she understands Constitutional law better than any of us here on the board.

Again, you are not giving an example of WHY you think she is a joke – just highlighting quotes of why you don’t like her… There is a huge difference between not liking her and calling her a joke.

No, she isn’t a joke… she just has different ideas than you. This is the main problem with the Left – you can’t accept that others think and feel differently than you and it infuriates you. But that is the beauty of FREEDOM. You can think and feel the way you want to. It’s your right not to like her, but people will be more likely to listen to you if you provide a constructive criticism (even through satire) rather than a bitter diatribe without substance.

If she is such a joke, how do you think you would fare in a debate on the issues with Ann? Could you refute her arguments with other facts and research?

Most people I know – even some of the best debaters – would be hard pressed to win a debate with Ann.

Feb 4, 2009 - 3:25 pm 170. KJ Colorado:

Mr. Karger -

Please check out statistics on the demographics that pay the most in taxes and which pay little to no tax at all and their typical affiliations. http://www.irs.gov, http://www.census.gov. You can also check out independent studies that have been conducted regarding political affiliation and contribution to society. Check out the Heritage Foundation or the Cato Institute or the Manhatten Institute. Lots of good studies.

I admit, that was a low blow. But I can tell you that I have many a liberal friend (my best friend in fact) and many of them do not pay taxes at all, and if so, very little because of the income bracket they are in. I am not bashing low wage earners, but if you are not paying taxes, then you can’t complain about taxes being too high and how you should get a return when you in fact have paid nothing into the system.

I myself am in a median bracket. I pay more than most (based by income bracket and property value), but I am still not getting as blasted by taxes as many others in this country.

Like I said, look at the liberal constituency, their average income, determine the tax bracket, and a large majority will be getting either full or modest returns after deductions etc. are taken into account. My thought is that most people on welfare or who are reliant on government support won’t vote Republican – which makes sense.

People who pay the most in taxes, as a rule, are typically against entitlement spending which means they are usually more conservative, which many documented studies prove (and which are documented in Ms. Coulter’s books).

I could have phrased that more tactfully – apologies for not being PC.

Feb 4, 2009 - 6:42 pm 172. Michael Karger:

Dear Kathy,

You really need to get your facts straight. Canada never officially or unofficially participated in the Vietnam conflict. Lets try not to use Wiki answer for sources. What are we in the 5th grade?

Canada did not have any military presence fighting in the Anti-communist front. In fact, Canadian citizens would come to the US and join to fight in the war. There were quite a large number of Canadian born US soldiers. The reason for this was because Canada never got involved with the Vietnam conflict.

In 1954, Canada participated in an attempted ceasefire enforcement coordinated by NATO and joined the ICC. This was not a military action but instead a peacefully organized attempt at forming ceasefire treaties. It started long before the Vietnam Conflict and was a completely different event. That is where those medals came from.

What’s so damn hysterical is that your Vietnam war bibliography explicitly states that Canadian forces only participated in the ICC and attempted enforcement of Geneva law.

What I’m trying to get at here is that YOU ARE WRONG. That also means that Ann Coulter is wrong. And myself and CBS are right.

But I must applaud you for your efforts.

Feb 4, 2009 - 8:44 pm 173. Michael Karger:

I appreciate the clarification KJ. The point I was trying to make was that liberals pay taxes when they need to pay them.

You can’t blame a liberal for making 4K a year and not being able to pay taxes (the same goes for a conservative making 4K a year). But there are plenty of moderately and substantially wealthy liberals out there that pay taxes just like anyone else. Just because we hold different political beliefs doesn’t all of a sudden mean we hate taxes.

Yes, it was clear to me that Canada sent troops to Vietnam in 50’s during partition for the purpose of Geneva enforcement. However, there actually were Canadian Troops on the ground in Vietnam, literally, for whatever purpose. You’ve presented only your rendition of what Ann C. said in an interview, giving no citation that can be checked for her exact words. Your argument is built around your own say-so: not acceptable or persuasive. Citation please.

You are, of course, free to make your own spin or to not ‘get’ her humor. Plenty of people do and don’t, the former & latter respectively. Was she being ironic? Without verifiable information further discussion seems pointless.

I submit that better minds than mine or yours crawl all over her stuff regularly looking for factual errors. As a trained attorney with a history of baiting jackal pursuers just for fun, she knows to make the basis of her arguments watertight. Big Dawg and Kathy,

The facts state otherwise. Honestly I have no way of verifying that you were in fact in Vietnam or that you saw Canadian soldiers. For all I know you are just trying to pull facts out of thin air to debase my argument.

Ann Coulter was referring to the Vietnam conflict and stated explicitly Canada’s support and contribution in that Conflict. Her statements weren’t ambiguous but instead pretty obvious.

Oh and Neo, you just stated 3 people who didn’t pay taxes. If that is enough statistical evidence for you to draw conclusions on an entire segment of the population then you are an absolute idiot. On top of that you know nothing about statistics.

Feb 9, 2009 - 11:12 am 189. Michael Karger:

Neo

Being a marxist, the last thing I want is more taxes for the “working class”. I think that the problem here is that you hold a drastically different definition of “working class”.

I want a progressive tax system.

I mean come on, I made 8000 dollars last year working part time and being a full time student. And the government still made me pay income tax. There is something wrong with the system when I have to pay taxes when I need all of my money just to get by in school, and CEOs are spending 30,000 dollars on a toilet….Where’s the justice?

As for the word “liberal”, we take that name for our admittedly open social values. The definition of liberal is

Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
b. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

The term you are trying to identify with is “classical liberalism” which is not related to modern “liberal” ideology.

But I don’t personally call myself a liberal on a regular basis. I consider myself a “Progressive Socialist”. I think it fits my views better.

Feb 9, 2009 - 11:55 am 190. neonidas:

Comrade Mikial,

As a full time student and a progressive socialist then you won’t mind that you should be forced to give 1/4 your grades, classwork and dissertation work product to other students at another school.

Furthermore you needn’t bother to “educate” me. I was actually around before the term Liberal was hijacked and perverted by the Left.

After you matriculate and hatch from that incubator you currently find yourself come back and talk to us about how relieved you are that you can finally give according to your ability to those according to their need.

Feb 9, 2009 - 12:40 pm 191. Evan:

“As a full time student and a progressive socialist then you won’t mind that you should be forced to give 1/4 your grades, classwork and dissertation work product to other students at another school.”

I’m not a socialist or a conservative but even I can see the difference between distributing money and grades. People get by just fine without a fancy education, without money you don’t get far. You don’t inherit grades from your parents, but you can be a lazy bum and still be rich if you are lucky enough to be born into a rich family. I believe people who are active and look for work deserve unemployment benefits, I believe sick/disabled/mentally challenged people deserve to eat and have a place to stay, I believe kids deserve to be treated by a doctor if they are ill etc. These things cost money and I’m happy to pay my share.

Feb 9, 2009 - 2:22 pm 192. Michael Karger:

My hyper-conservative statistics teacher presented that “grades” argument about 4 months ago. My rebuttle silenced him…

In a classroom setting, the point of educating is to improve the individual student. In order to evaluate progress, each student must submit separate work and tests (If you want to know how Johnny is doing, you don’t have Steve take a test for him).

In the job world, I may ask for help to finish a project at my work. In class, I cannot ask a classmate to help do my homework or take my tests. I know that I need to retain the information taught and the only way I can do that is by doing my own work.

As said before, you don’t inherit intelligence or education. I cannot purchase or steal intelligence from anyone else.

The comparison is ludicrous at best.

Comrade Mikial,

I’d wager that your stats prof was speechless at the breathtakingly beautiful example of how nature abhors a vacuum and anything can fill and empty head. Grades are the measure of competitive learning for a purpose. Otherwise GPA, degrees and awards are pointless. So don’t try to make a argument on that. That duck don’t swim. If the point of educating is to improve the individual what does Academia do with the failure? Does your institution remediate the failure to point of ensuring his permanent success in the job world? (I’d submit that most of those failures remain in Academia as department chairs.)

But of course at this point in your tender development you’d think nothing of asking a future co-worker to do his job and your’s also. That is not surprising to me. Though you will probably be surprised that your co-worker will comment on how little your eduction helped you perform your own job function. You can be sure that your annual performance review (particularly in the professional track) will well document his capacities very well. I wonder if he will share his performance raises with you?

I’ll pass your view on inheritance and stealing intelligence along to those Lions of the Left such as the Kennedy’s and the Clintons.

What does academia do with the failure? They suggest joining the National Guard. If you think I’m kidding then go ask any high school advisor. If you aren’t going to get a scholarship, 9 times out of 10 you are going to be asked to think about joining the armed forces. Either that or they throw a brochure at you talking about how awesome technical schools are.

As for “competitive” learning, I never said the system was perfect. In fact it’s in shambles. How can you consider education competitive when certain schools get vastly more funding then others? And don’t even get me started on the No Child Left Behind Act. *gags*

If you are somehow still trying to compare an education to monetary wealth, then you are a tool.

Also, if I can’t reach a box in the stock room because I’m too short, I ask someone to help me. If that is lazy, then little people must be the laziest people on earth.

But yet again, any form of logic has apparently escaped your grasp.

If the Kennedy’s and Clintons are the lions of the left, then that sucker Limbaugh and Hannity are your lions of the right. The massive generalizations in here border on comma inducing.

Michael my man,

I’ll let you have the last word on this but please hold it until you’ve past the milestone in your life where you’ve produced more than you’ve consumed. Good luck. Good fortune. God speed.

On a general rule, consumption/production would be negatively correlated.

IE the rich consume much more then they produce, and the poor produce much more then they consume. There are always exceptions, but most of the time that holds true.

As an employee at a drug store for 3 years making 8000 dollars a year, I almost certainly produced (or provided service) more then I consumed.

Oh yeah, that is basic Marxist thought. It’s the basis for The Communist Manifesto.

Perfect! I couldn’t have said it better myself.
