The fact is that Russia has wanted to take over Iran for 400 years. This is FAR from the first time such action has been taken and Ahmadinejad is FAR from the first authority in Iran to get cozy and sexy with the Ruskis. Just read Morgan Shuster's book THE STRANGLING OF PERSIA and you'll see. The warm water ports of Iran is one thing that the Russians have coveted forever and of course the oil and gas doesn't hurt. All in all Iran will NEVER be free to be Iran while the Russia is run by psychotic Czars of all ideological stripes. Thanks to plutocratic scoundrels like Zbignew Brzezinski and his ill-conceived notion of the so-called GREEN BELT; now we're stuck with Putin, the present-day wave of Ivan-the-terrible style Russians leaders.

The scenario of WWIII is starting to take shape before our very eyes.

Putin, the Rouski Dictator who poisons his enemies with Polonium, is teaming up with the Theocracy of Turds in Tehran's mruderous regime. What a marvelously appalling pair!

We must face the music, and prepare ourselves for the ultimate conflict that is looming ever so closer by each passing day. We cannot run away from this battle like the state department is doing now.

I am afraid the Bush administration foreign policy, with the likes of Condi Rice and Robert Gates in charge, is a total disaster so far.

The President must take things into own hands and be the "Decider" soon. So far, our response to the Iranian dictatorship as well as its "Sugar Daddy" Russia has been very anemic and disappointing.

Intro lists Kim Zigfeld as the author. Article lists Laura Zigfeld as the author. Which is it? [Sorry for typo, now fixed. -- Ed.]

Putin knows there are no repercussions with dissing the West. The Europeans nead their natural gas and are averse to conflict (or even hard rhettoric) and the US already has a full plate.

If Putin plays his cards well he can sell lots of Russian equipment to Iran, keep Iran from a targetting or funding problems in Russia and in return that equipment will be destroyed and oil prices go through the roof as the Americans deal with the Iranians.

So Russia gets a win/win with no real fallout. It's a clever game plan even if it's dispicable.

A very insightful article. The situation in Russia is reminiscent of the early 90s in Yugoslavia, when Izetbegovic and Co. established warm ties with the Iranians, contributing to the destabilization of the situation in Bosnia. Thus, we can perhaps see the importance of resolving the Kosovo situation as a sort-of warm-up to the demographic crisis in Russia. It beggars the imagination to think what a new Russian Civil War might entail.

I wonder if it's not all a sham. Putin is a dictator, but he is savvy. In setting up Iran with defenses and giving that already-beleaguered state a saber or three to rattle, he could be working toward Russia's national interest.

Not in defending Iran, but setting up Iran to take the fall. Russia cares not for Muslims - evidenced by the crushing of Chechnya. However, they face a demographic crisis, and you're right to say that when the time is right, Iran (as well as Jihadi groups) will leverage the Russian Muslim population to their advantage.

That is, of course, if there -is- an Iran in 2050.

If Putin is as canny as I think he is, he's going to put Iran into a position against the rest of the world that will cause the regime to collapse, thus removing a threat from Russia's border. He's already given them the ammunition to do so, and they have the crazed will to use it. Putin's already playing at setting up some plausible denial. "Nuclear power for peace!" he says - but he knows better.

He's playing a dangerous game, arming madmen; but they aren't mad at Russia, and in a confrontation with the West, Russia may be the ultimate winner.
