In Focus: Obama Would Leave Church If Wright Didn’t Retire

Obama disowns his pastor hypothetically. No one buys it.

March 28, 2008 - by Michael Weiss

Bill Clinton must secretly envy Barack Obama ability to have it both ways. In the candidate’s speech about his vile pastor Jeremiah Wright, he said: “I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community,” which comment earned additional praise from liberals who were already carried aloft on Obama’s honied words to the Xanadu of post-partisan politics. Wasn’t it brave of him not to repudiate his pastor like that?

Well now he’s repudiated him on the daytime talkshow The View:

“Had the reverend not retired, and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country — for all its flaws — then I wouldn’t have felt comfortable staying there at the church.”

After such knowledge, what forgiveness? Of course, it has been twenty years of faithfully weighing the two Wrights in his own mind — the anti-American conspiracist and the kindhearted merchant of hope. Good thing Obama entered the political spotlight and had the country do his preacher “vetting” for him. Good thing, too, Wright decided to hang up his dashiki not a moment too soon.

Not that he should be upset over this mild snubbing. He’s retiring in comfort, moving into a 10,000-plus square foot home in suburban Chicago that’s valued at $1.6 million and was at least partially secured through a mortgage made by Trinity United Church of Christ. Nothing suspect in that, but it might not play well with all those parishoners Wright has convinced over the years that “black values” are incompatible with middle-class wealth.

Tom Maguire at JustOneMinute asks: “[W]hen did Wright acknowledge that what he had said was deeply offensive and inappropriate? The AP story recounts some of Wright’s controversial comments but oddly omits to mention his apology, as does all other news coverage with which I am familiar. And I am strangely certain that a Wright apology would have made the news – unless he never made it publicly.”

But Allahpundit at Hot Air doesn’t “read it that way at all. I think he’s speaking purely hypothetically, if inartfully: If Wright was still pastor of the church and if he refused to apologize for the sermons, then Obama would have to quit. Since he’s not still pastor, there’s no need to quit irrespective of whether Wright has apologized or not.”

And Gateway Pundit isn’t buying a word of any of it: “The truth is– We all know he’d still be sitting in the front row at Trinity if tapes of his anti-American mentor of 20 years were not making the cable news shows.”

I don’t know if the wording on Trinity’s website still reads the same,

but when this story first broke it said that the new pastor at Trinity is under the authority of Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Too funny. Obama was there BECAUSE of ‘Reverend’ White.

Who is he trying to kid?

Mar 28, 2008 - 1:24 pm 3. Claudia:

Never mind about Rev. Wright. He is just one person. The fact that the congregation stood up and cheered is more disconcerting. Don’t believe that Rev. Wright would have said those things if he didn’t believe his congregation would have been shocked. He knew they would like it! How come Obama didn’t see that! That is his “faith community”.

When my pastor makes comments – and not often (2 times that I can remember) – that are controversial the whole congregation is silent!

C’mon guys, all he said is that “if…blah, blah, blah,” he “would feel UNCOMFORTABLE” hanging out at TUCC. This is just slimey lawyer psychobabble and means virtually NOTHING. Why there is a lot of hoopla thinking Obama has somehow disowned or repudiated Wright makes me think all of yall have forgotten all you ever knew about lawyerly-like Clinton-speak.

Obama needs the street cred with black voters, so he hedges his words very carefully whenever he talks about Wright. “Uncomfortable” is the well worn psychological escape word. It is prescribed for people who won’t be responsible for their likes, dislikes, or behaviors.

Obama’s tactic is to find anything wrong in the world then blame anybody breathing for the trouble. And people actually beleive him/

Anytime Obama gets caught doing something wrong the race card saves him. WRIGHT, REZKO, NAFTA-GATE.

Obama waited so long to respond to Wright to figure out a way to blame Clinton. He did come up with a picture the low LIFE

Oh really? Obama admitted in his damage control speech on race (clearly an act of desperation in my view) that this wasn’t the first time he listened to sermons like this during his 20 year relationship with Rev. Wright.
If Obama was not running for President and this vile sermon was not caught on tape you can bet on your mother’s
life that he would NOT have left the church. This guy might give a good speech but I think he is politics as usual of the worst kind.

Obama has no problem insulting our intelligence with comments like this due to his growing arrogance from be keenly aware of how successful he’s been at manipulating millions into believing he’s something and someone he truly is not.

The man has nothing notable from his past to today that proves he lives by his campaign rhetoric.

The fact that his campaign is blocking a revote in Florida and Michigan is unconscionable.

I thought this country was filled with a bunch of numb minded people for voting Bush into the White House!

Mar 28, 2008 - 3:05 pm 7. Francois:

Yes Barack, and if pigs could fly , I would be Emperor of China!
This is a joke. And Obama gets away with insulting people’s intelligence, no matter how incredulous what he says is! It is amazing!
I hope America wakes up to this slimey snake oil salesman before it is too late and prevent us fromhaving another disastrous 4 years after the previous seven. Obama is just like a liberal Bush.
He is too inexperienced, untested and unknown to the public. He is also too immature to be trusted with the Presidency and all that it means.
As a lifelong Democrat, I will vote for McCain if Obama is the Democratic nominee…

This is exactly the kind of arrogance that turned me against Obama early on in the race. It’s going to be very interesting to watch as voters realize how they’ve been manipulated into once again thinking they were taking the high road only to find out that they’ve been blindsided. I honestly don’t know how many more times this country can withstand this kind of power seeking misguidance. A celebrity president is not what we need at this point in time. After 20 years, Senator Obama says that he would have left his church if Wright wasn’t to retire. Why now? I guess he’s been going to retire for the past 20 years. In raising our son there were choices we made regarding which beloved relatives we allowed our son exposure to based on their vocalization of their racial opinions. Wake up DNC. How do you believe you’ve got a uniter? Look at the media described war going on in the deomocratic party. Oh that’s right. I forgot. That’s due to Senator Clinton’s (Obama stated)divisiveness.

Mar 28, 2008 - 4:13 pm 11. David P.:

Barak Obama’s entire agenda runs parallel with Wrights ideology, his vision of change begins with a complete divestment from US foreign policy trends in the middle east. It stems from the lie that all problems in the Islamic world can be solved once America abandons its policies towards Israel. Obama will use standing UN resolutions to preoccupy himself with demands that Israel disclose it’s nukes, while the rest of the Arab states accelerate their own covert programs. Meanwhile Iran will be perfecting their newly developed nuclear arsenal, while the mullahs deceptively placate Obama’s naive attempt at diplomacy.

Mar 28, 2008 - 7:08 pm 12. Richard:

Hey Gail,
“Wherefore by there fruits you shall no them” (Matt 7:20). At least Obama had the balls to stand up like a man and address the pastor head-on without trying to divert attention to the challenges of his opponent. Hillary wont admit she made a mistake about the war, lied about not supporting NAFTA, and OMG Bosnia. That’s right, she “misspoke”. Hillary sure has some strange fruit…

Mar 28, 2008 - 8:31 pm 13. Ed Wallis:

Richard wrote: “At least Obama…address(ed) the pastor head-on without trying to divert attention….”

Most certainly Obama did not address him “head-on.” As a lawyer, Obama is well versed in diverting attention when “cornered,” “caught” or merely incapable of offering a direct answer:

http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/03/obama_its_all_a_distraction.asp

It has been written most articulately by others, how Obama to date continues to cling to Wright, the Church o’ Eternal Hate, and its beliefs…and if you don’t agree, well, “it’s a black thing, you you wouldn’t understand.” You see, in the world of moral relativism, “having it both ways” is actually “being consistent.”

That’s the only way Obama’s offensive claim about “Original Sin” of slavery [READ: whites must pay ever more trillions to support programs for blacks only, in order to receive a "Racial Indulgence" from the self-elected "Pope Obama I"] makes sense.

Mar 29, 2008 - 2:38 am 14. Lisa R:

When you really think openly about Obama’s statement that if Minister Wright weren’t retiring he would have left the church.
1. Obama already admitted hearing inappropriate comments from Wright in Church.
2. Obama already admitted that he heard about additional inappropriate comments Wright had made after he started his campaign.
3. Obama continued to go to Trinity even after inappopriate comments were made in church. He never once spoke to Wright or anyone at the church denouncing the comments.
4. Obama continued to belong to Trinity even after he started his campaign and knew of additional negativity going on in the church which he wasn’t there to hear.
5. Obama asked Wright to provide spiritual support to him during his campaign. He prayed with Wright before speeches.
CONCLUSION: Obama states that he would have left the church if Wright hadn’t retired. THAT IS BULL! He knew about the comments long before it was picked up by the press and he continued to belong to the church and actually enhanced his relationship with Minister Wright. These comments are such a lie. Actions speak louder than words!!!

Obama is making the very mistake that cost John Kerry the election, barely concealed contempt for the electorate. The details may be different, but the mistake is the same. All his excuses only indicate that he despises his own church members as much as he despises the rest of us. They, like every one else, are used to feed his ambition. Like Kerry, he’s an elitist snob, not a man of the people, and he is not street-smart.

Mar 29, 2008 - 6:10 am 16. Brian:

LIAR…that’s all I can say. How many people believe that Obama would actually have left the congregation if this controversy did not erupt. Incredible that people actually believe him.

Mar 29, 2008 - 6:53 am 17. gail:

The 1st time I heard Obama speak I believed what Oprah believed that he was brilliant and going places, than I started hearing things but reserved judgement until they are proved to be true, things like no patrotism,{placing your hand on your heart or not}did he or did he not swear in on the Bible? His wife’s this is the 1st time I have been proud of our country remark and then all the rev. Wright and his 20 yr. relationship with someone who spews hate comes out. Please do not compare him to Hilary bc I cannot support her either.I will probably vote for Mccain.I believe this is a sample if not the real thing of what it will be like when the antichrist comes on the scene he will be apeacemaker or appear to be,he will decieve many, many will follow so blindly,he will literally be able to brainwash people and many that are not strong in their faith will fall away from their faith if we elect Mr Obama to lead this country I believe it will be the beginning of the end not bc he is black bc I do not believe he is black or white. My grandaughter who is of mixed races who I adore and cherish has a white mother and a black father and I refuse to check a box that has black white or hispanic.I raised my children not to judge someone by the color of their skin,we all attend a wonderful very racially mixed church and have a pastor that teaches us we are to love one another. You cannot be a racist and say you have the Holy Spirit in you HATE CANNOT COEXIST WITH LOVE.John Bevere vistited our church he said you cannot be a racist and be a christian.I could not sit there 20 yrs and listen to those things if I did not believe them honestly could you? That person certainly could not be my MENTOR.I remember standing up and telling a church they were wrong for having to vote to let a black lady become a member I had to stand up and speak thats wrong.Jesus does not care what color someone is and God lead me to another church.I just pray for all those people who say thats just the way the black church is….

I notice that Obama never expresses positive sentiments about America without including a partial retraction. In the quote above, it is: “I believe is the greatness of this country — for all its flaws…”

I wonder if those are the same flaws that Reverend Wright spoke of.

Mar 29, 2008 - 9:10 am 19. Perry Birman:

My family and I immigrated to the United States and settled in Florida in 1996. In order to plant some roots and connect with our new community and society we joined a Reform Jewish Temple in Boca Raton, where we had bought a home. There were many instances that we did not agree with the ideology of the majority of the congregation as it was more liberal than we were, but we enjoyed many other things about the Temple and we chose to ignore and discard that which we didn’t like. After all, nothing is perfect.

In March 2006, Hamas won an election in newly-unoccupied Gaza, shocking much of the world. Hamas is an Iran-backed Shia Muslim terror organization whose charter calls for the destruction of Israel. Meanwhile in America, 387 Rabbis signed a petition urging President Bush to not discontinue foreign aid funding to Hamas in order to facilitate “dialogue”. Two of the four Rabbis at our Temple were signatories to that petition. In my view, any money sent to Hamas would be used for weapons or for suicide bombers to attack Israel and kill innocent Israelis. Simply put, these Rabbis were advocating for America to fund the murder of Jews. I found this to be if not repugnant, mortally naive. This Temple stood for something that was diametrically opposed to those things we believed in. We resigned our membership. We left.

Senator Barrack Obama was in a situation not dissimilar to my own. He was (still is) a member of a church where the Pastor has delivered many sermons which were extremist, incendiary, treasonous, bigoted and racist. The Reverend Jeremiah Wright sermonized that “white America” invented the AIDS virus to kill blacks; He claims America deserved 9/11, that it was just “the chickens coming home to roost”, perhaps because America supported Israel, the evil oppressor of the Palestinians. Rev. Wright has made many other vile statements that we have all heard by now. Rev. Wright admired and honored the anti-Semite racist Louis Farakkahn with a church award. It is absolutely impossible that Senator Obama did not know what the Rev. Jeremiah Wright stood for, having been a member of that church for TWENTY YEARS! Obama knew of the lunatic ranting, he likely heard it, and he stayed at Trinity United Church regardless. Is it illogical to infer that Senator Obama stood for the same things (until we all found out)?

Senator Obama recently delivered an eloquent speech telling us about racism from many different angles. This was pure excuse-making, equivocation and spin. Nowhere did he condemn Rev. Wright for black supremacist racism. Nowhere did Obama apologize to Americans for being part of this. Nowhere did he say that he should have left Trinity United Church. He said he could no more disown Rev. Wright than he could his racist white grandmother. That is a lie. We cannot choose our grandparents but we can choose our synagogues, our churches, our spiritual leaders. And besides, Obama’s grandmother did not deliver fiery rants from a pulpit before large crowds like Jeremiah Wright did. If Senator Obama was a man of moral integrity and had a bit of courage, he could have – and should have – left his congregation just like I left mine.

It is a fair discussion whether Senator Barrack Obama has poor judgement or whether he is a liar. In either case, he is absolutely undeserving and totally unfit to be President of ALL Americans.

Mar 29, 2008 - 9:14 am 20. Curly Smith:

I believe Obama when he says he would have left the church if he heard inappropriate comments. Admittedly, that doesn’t take any faith on my part as Obama left the church after every service. So while Obama’s careful parsing is technically true, the real meaning depends on the definition of “left” which, oddly, is also an open question on his agenda. His speeches are full of “hope” and “change” but the details, and substantial cost, are “left” out. Just how “left” is his “left” agenda?

Mar 29, 2008 - 9:27 am 21. OldSarg:

I was okay for a while. I was willing to accept that he didn’t leave the church for his wife’s benefit. I even considered his mixup with the criminal in Chicago that bought half his front lawn understandable since he “might” not understand that there are bad people that want to influence you out in the real world. But then I thought it all over and the Wall Street Journal came out with the article about the tax returns. Obama hasn’t put a dime away for his families future. He has no IRA, no SEP, no 401K, no savings, no money set aside for his children’s college and why should he? Obama is a racist black man that knows the United States OWES him a future. He doesn’t have to take any responsibility for it.. Why plan for college for his kids? It will be free because of their race. Why save for retirement? The USA owes him a living because he is black. Why worry about being independent of the government teet? If he fails it’s because “The Man” has held him down.

Mar 29, 2008 - 9:30 am 22. Kirk:

No, people aren’t buying it anymore. Something else is happening in the US though. I have noticed a distinct rise in racial references since Obama was decloaked as a villian. White people who usually never bring it up are talking angry and in public, and black people too. I really am starting to think Obama has actually set race relations BACKWARDS in America, with his acceptance and excusal of black hate. I don’t think anyone knows how much damage will be done, and it’s not done getting worse.

Mar 29, 2008 - 10:10 am 23. sh:

I cannot believe some people are so upset about Pastor Jeremiah Wright comments about racism in America. When he was just exposing his own pain and anger about how people of color have been treated for CENTURIES IN AMERICA!!! If that short twenty second clip has people feeling so uncomfortable. Take a minute to meditate on how the majority of people of color, especially AFRICAN-AMERICANS feel when we experience discrimination and prejudicy on our jobs, while shopping, while driving, while simply living. Every time we turn on the news we see one of our own getting beat and killed by the police department and treated unfairly in the judicial system. EVERY SINGLE DAY WE EXPERIENCE HARSHNESS, RUDENESS, GLARING LOOKS AND SARCASM FROM THE MOUTHS OF WHITE PEOPLE – WHICH MAKES US UNCOMFORTABLE EVERY MINUTE OF OUR LIVES. Have you forgot about the slave trade, the middle passage, Jim Crow and Overt and Subtle racist behavior still present in 2008. African -American have a justified right to be terrified living in this society considering how we were brought here. So if twenty-seconds have you feeling scared, just think about how we feel when hate crimes and comments have been inflicted upon against us for HUNDREDS OF YEARS!!!–GET A CLUE!!!

I’ve noticed that nothing seems to stick to this guy. No matter what comes up the pike, it never settles on Obama. In my 72 years I have always tried to stay clear of people that are sqeaky clean and teflon coated. If this man is elected to the presidency I hope that the American People know what they are doing because I sure in hell can’t figure it out?

It’s like I said on my blog — the only people with a sufficient ability to suspend disbelief and buy Obama’s spin are Renaissance Faire enthusiasts and Obama supporters. It requires a childlike mentality.

Mar 29, 2008 - 11:59 am 26. ddc:

Gee, I thought hearing the word of the Lord in church was more about how we can live better lives, love thy neighbor. Since when did the word of God also include a race-injected politcal diatribe about “white supremacy, and garlic-nosed Italians?”

I have grown so completely tired of the second-coming-of-the-messiah-like hysteria over Obama. “Typical white man,” anyone?

If Hillary used a term like “typical black man” she’d be damned for all eternity as a racist, forget about McCain using it.

Why don’t we stop the campaigning and just declare Obama, President, based only on the premise that he’s a black man who can give a good speech.

Will Barry/Hillary declare a victory in Iraq and leave? What happens when we are hit again? Will Barry/Hillary apologize to the attackers? Are there going to be race/gender quotas in jobs and eduction?

REV. WRIGHT IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY HATER.

Mar 29, 2008 - 1:10 pm 29. Bill W:

In the space of one paragraph he misleads three times:

“Had the reverend not retired, and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country — for all its flaws — then I wouldn’t have felt comfortable staying there at the church.”

Had the reverend not retired – he has said that about all of the times in the last year that Rev. Wright has been controversial, but Rev. Wright’s retirement is not in effect until the end of this month – so, this has been a year& 3 month “exemption”.

“had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized” — when did he do that? I don’t have access to Nexis, but a journalist who did searched and found no such acknowledgement. And notice that the last word is not any sort of acknowledgement, but an excuse.

“I wouldn’t have felt comfortable staying there at the church.” That does not say that he would have left the church as most are interpreting it, just that he would have felt uncomfortable.

So, lawyerly weasel words that in the space of one paragraph tells you a lot about his character.

sh, one minute. OK. Done meditating.

With all your whining, you prove the point of many: that many American blacks feel like YOU-OWE-ME Victims. Reverend Wright’s anti-American racist rants serve only to further this anger, bitterness and resentment.

THAT is why so many Americans today say: grow up, learn forgiveness, work to be better, and get off yer waaaaah waaaaaaaah waaaah posterior to do your part in making your situation and the world a better place!

Obama’s speech on Rev. Wright and race has resulted in a situation I have dreaded for some time: people who held ‘racist’ views and were kept out of the mainstream of American society, now have reason to believe that their views are worthy of consideration. Case in point, David Duke (former?) member of the KKK, called in to the Mark Davis Radio Show (WBAP AM 820)here in Dallas last week to express his views on the whole Rev Wright mess. Many of the observations that Duke made were no different than those of many other callers previous to his. The only comments he made that some may consider ‘classic’ David Duke were his comments on standing up for the rights of European-Americans. Given the comments made by Rev Wright, Duke’s comments were, by contrast, tame.
That ‘Feel-Good’ effect that Obama’s speeches seem to have over so many people, has had the unintended consequence of making people such as David Duke (and others like him) ‘feel good’ about their views.
If Rev Wright’s views are not thoroughly dis-credited (as they should be), then we can expect more David Dukes to hit the mainstream in the coming years. There may be someone who can bring the races together, but judging by the events of the past few week, Obama is not “The One”

Apr 2, 2008 - 8:06 pm 41. Kay:

I am so tired of hearing about Obama being a messiah. I think he is only where he is today because he is different, albeit inexperienced as a teenager for the job description. He is a racist and he can deny it all day, we all know the truth. I never thought about race on a day to day basis. I rarely think of it. To hear that some people harbor this kind of crap, and worse to hear they teach it and preach it at their church is disheartening. To hear a presidential hopeful is attending said church……is shocking. If this man had been white, he would of been run off long ago. We knew about this church a long time ago, nobody believed me. It was a non-issue until those tapes came out. Now it is all hush hush. Many black people seem to dare white people to criticize the situation. Personally I think this whole thing is a race riot waiting to happen. I am so damn tired of hearing about race…the main ones I hear it from are black people. Most black people I know are fine. But some are just as prejudiced as any white person. (the ones that they consider THE MAN and all that diatribe)I was in school and in the military with many colors. I don’t care if they are cool, I am cool. But to hear outright hatred about any color just ticks me off. I won’t stay around anyone doing that. It certainly should never be talked about in church like Wright did. But for a presidential candidate…it is unforgivable. Deep down I have problems with whether he is some sort of Manchurian Candidate anyway. To read about all the race crap just finishes it off for me. No way will I ever vote for him. Some vote for him just because of his color. Some to prove a point they aren’t prejudiced. Some are just fools thinking he is a messiah. He is another Jimmy Carter….but WORSE. His mid east religious upbringing I find disturbing. His book is unsettling. We would be in danger if we elect this man. We definitely need a good person to vote for this go round. Sadly Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Obama are NOT the right ones. Obama is the worst of the three. Mark my words, and take that to the bank folks.

Please everyone take note of who our elected officials are supporting so we know who not to re-elect.They are NOT backing the 1st African American they are backing the 1st Arab American don’t take my word for it though check out his family, his lies about his background its very conveinient that he claims to be African American to get the African American vote,he does not talk about his Arab roots unless its to lie about them hmmmm The trail is there follow it.Where is all his money coming from not all from Oprah surely..I mean she is rich but she can’t do it all alone of course he has Hollywood bamboozled into believing he wants world peace kind of like the spirit of anti-christ that will come in the last days.

sh,what about all the white people who fought to end slavery?many died to end the injustice.I have 2 daughters and a bi-racial granddaughter and all our life we have taken a stand against predjudice, unfair treatment of blacks, whites, abused women it did not matter what color anyone was,if they were being mistreated. They experienced racism also if someone did not want their son dating a white person .It happens..You can spend all your life feeling mistreated or you can stand up against hatred, opression and abuse regardless of where it’s coming from and believe me there are good and very bad in all colors.Everything you mentioned would make me angry and me or my children would speak out against any of it regardless of the consequences to us,so please quit blaming the whole white race for what some ignorant racist do.We do not blame all the black race for what a black person may do.

The time is up for going the extra mile to help black people advance. Nothing challenges them to improve. The black community only knows the words… take, take and take. I can’t believe what was preached in Obama’s church. Someone said…Oh! this is how we preach (Yelling). For me yelling and making a scene is a sign of ignorance. Obama your not fooling anyone…and OH! “You lost my vote”!
