Lead Us to Post-Oil Nirvana, Senator Reid
Here are ways that Reid can help inspire Americans to kick our "sick" fossil fuel addiction. Lead by example, Harry!
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s recent comments on how bad things are when it comes to America’s oil addiction really opened my eyes to the dangers we face regarding fossil fuels and global warming:
Coal makes us sick. Oil makes us sick. It’s global warming, it’s ruining our country, it’s ruining our world. We’ve got to stop using fossil fuel. We have, for generations, taken it out of the earth, carved it out of the earth, and put it in the atmosphere, and it’s making us all sick. It’s changing our world.
I’ve always wondered why Harry reminded me of a walking, talking corpse. It’s the oil, darn it! Our addiction to oil is hurting Harry! And if we’re going to Save the EarthTM, along with Harry Reid, some changes are going to have to be made pretty darn quick.
And who better to lead the way than the man who made this nationwide epiphany possible? Being a leader in one of the most venerated American institutions today — okay, I fudged that just a little — gives Harry a voice of authority that ordinary Americans are sure to respond to. But it isn’t just his reedy wheeze that will make us sit up and take notice. It’s his firm grip on the tiller of this great ship we call America when he sets the example that we — the humble American electorate, the people he in turn humbly serves — are sure to appreciate. Therefore, I presume that Harry will be helping us to kick the oil habit by incorporating the following strategies into his role as top dog in the Senate:
- Walk the walk. Harry will be among the first to extol the virtues of a healthy stroll on Capitol Hill. No longer will he ride in an SUV from one side of the street to another — especially when he’s headed to energy efficiency conferences. Like the rest of us, Harry should be proud to “take a walk for Gaia.” He could even invest in a bicycle. (And if he gets one “built for two,” he can invite House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to take fun lunchtime rides with him down Pennsylvania Avenue.) And, in the name of consistency, he might want to give up the other SUV that he keeps in his home state of Nevada.
- Flying straight. When it comes to airline travel, the average American is being hit hard. Spiraling fuel costs mean that airlines must not only start charging more for luggage, but they’re beginning to cancel flights, making it less convenient to book a flight any old time. In the past, this hasn’t been a problem for Harry; he’s on the short list of Senate members who frequently make use of their ability to charter a private jet for travel to and from Washington. But no more. Even though he can afford to, I expect Harry will be girding his loins and joining the rest of the Senate hordes in booking flights just like real Americans do — one flight at a time, not multiple flights “just in case” they get out of session early. In addition, I look forward to Harry proposing a new rule that senators will no longer be allowed to travel to their home states on weekends, but will stay in Washington seven days a week while Congress is in session. If it was good enough for our elected officials in the days before airline travel, it should be good enough today.
- Open window policy. One of the biggest energy hogs is air conditioning, and in his quest to heal America and the world from sickening fossil fuels, I know Harry will be leading the charge for all federal buildings, in Washington and elsewhere around the country, to turn off the AC and rely on the breezes that Gaia so helpfully provides us with to stay cool. (This would tie in neatly with Barack Obama’s assertion that “we can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK.”) Harry could also suggest what many corporate entities do: provide “dress down day” opportunities in order to cut down the probability of public servants becoming prostrate from the heat in their suits and ties. And think of the fun they could have with Hawaiian shirt and tacky t-shirt themes!
- Eat locally, think globally. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, whose colorful language has made him famous — or is that infamous? — on the many reality television shows he stars in, wants restaurants in Britain to rely only on locally grown, in-season produce. “I don’t want to see asparagus on in the middle of December. I don’t want to see strawberries from Kenya in the middle of March. I want to see it home-grown,” he says. In fact, he’s already suggested that it be made law in the UK. What a great idea! Harry could lead the way for Americans in this noble effort by revamping the Senate cafeteria menu to make sure nothing passes the lips of our glorious senators that isn’t organic or that had to be trucked in from more than ten miles away. (Nancy Pelosi beat him to it, but better late than never.) Plus, as nanny staters continue to tighten their grip on unsuspecting American citizens, such a move will pave the way for future legislation such as Gordon Ramsay is suggesting for the UK.
- No land for oil. If we are to wean ourselves from our debilitating addiction to oil, something’s gotta give. We can start with banning the building of more shopping centers, which just encourage people to drive their cars and fritter away money on things like video games and kayaks. Therefore, land sales for shopping centers that involve senators tripling their investment while fudging the paperwork will be severely frowned upon by Harry. Yes, I know it’s hard to tell when Harry’s frowning, as his face doesn’t seem to change expression. But seriously, I just know he’s going to make sure Congress toes the line so that our elected officials can continue to be a shining beacon of light in these troubled times.
These suggestions are only the beginning of America’s new golden age! With Harry Reid leading the way toward a greener, healthier America, the dependence on fossil fuels that is currently “ruining our country” will seem like one of those bad dreams brought on by late-night trips to Taco Bell. In fact, we may see the day where treadle-powered water pumps, foot-powered generators, and bicycles that filter water will no longer just be for third-world citizens — they’ll be available for everyone! Convenient, labor-saving devices? Fuhgeddaboutit. Gaia is calling and we must heed the summons.
And perhaps the best part about our kicking the oil habit is this: we won’t be subject to Harry Reid’s rants because there won’t be enough electricity to be able to watch him on television, hear his prattling on YouTube, or send his speeches to each other via email. The Pony Express will ride again.

Jul 15, 2008 - 9:24 am 2. BackwardsBoy:Senator Reid’s ignorance of this important issue makes the case for a greatly reduced Congressional schedule. Spending more time among the electorate would increase our lawmakers fundamental understanding of public sentiment in general and market economics in particular.
Jul 15, 2008 - 9:50 am 3. always right:After listening to his fantastic distortion of truth, I no longer wonder why Congress’ approval rating is the lowest in history.

‘When in the course of human events…..’
Does anyone in congress represent you, dear reader? Hell, no, they represent themselves.
Did you get a slick mortgage deal? Did you get off your DUI arrest? Do you have wealthy friends paying for everything you do?
So, taxation without representation, grievous economic injuries both from omission and commission.
Time to water the tree of liberty.

Jul 15, 2008 - 11:02 am 7. cedarford:Bill Johnson – Time to water the tree of liberty.
Watching this pack in Congress in particular, the Lawyers&Lobbyists, and the Bush Corporatists and one square of toilet paper a day Elitists that have usurped the vote of the people – I am convinced that Thomas Jefferson was correct in his choice of irrigating agent for the tree of liberty.
And, I am also convinced that the American Public was stupid, complacent – oblivious to gathering threats to their way of life – and got precisely the government they deserved.
Now they have to show whether or not they have the brains to wake up, and the mettle to get control of their country back from the Corruptican Party and the Nanny State Party both controlled by the superwealthy Elites…
Jul 15, 2008 - 11:06 am 8. Ken Berwitz:Pam;
That comment about Harry Reid walking and talking like a corpse gave me quite a laugh.
I am the co-author of The Hopelessly Partisan Guide To American Politics. “Hopelessly Partisan” is a humorous look at the differences between Republicans and Democrats, mostly on how they act in their day-to-day lives rather than politically. In it, I referred to Reid as “Harry The Corpse”. Here is my verbatim explanation of why:
“…I call Harry Reid ‘the corpse” because in all the years I have followed politics I never saw a man whose voice and body language was more cadaverous. Every time he’s on TV I find myself fighting the urge to walk up to the screen and try to dust dirt from his suit jacket.”
They say that great minds think alike. (Ok, ok, so do idiots. But we won’t talk about that). I only hope the aphorism fits here.

Jul 15, 2008 - 11:58 am 9. Javelin:Roark, Mormons don’t need Reid to disgrace themselves. Anyone who believes that Eden is in Missouri, the American Indians were the ten lost tribes, converts dead Jews, banned blacks till 1978 and has splinter groups where 13 year old girls are married and impregnated does a good job of disgracing itself. Oh, I’m sorry, the only time it’s okay to expose a religion here is when it’s Obama’s church or Muslims.
Jul 15, 2008 - 12:00 pm 10. Two Dogs:Some of his ideas aren’t bad. I see all these box, flat roofed building with no openable windows or natural ventilation at all. Making some allowance for natural ventilation ala windows that open or roof vents sounds like a smart idea.
Roark and Javelin, who do y’all keep misspelling “morons?” There is only one “M,” no “A,” and an additional “O” in the word for Reid.

Ah yes. Once, people in DC left town when the Summer rolled around, because the city is built on a pestilential swamp. Then Air Conditioning was invented and installed in the hallowed halls of Congress and the Senate.
Which is when they all began hanging around year round, killing time. Before then, they’d arrive, conduct their business, and depart.
I highly advocate removing all Air Conditioning from these governmental offices.
Jul 15, 2008 - 1:07 pm 13. Dave II:Harry Reid makes us sick!!
How the fine state of Nevada continually elects this MORON (notice I didn’t say Mormon…many fine citizens are mormons) is just beyond me. But then, I shouldn’t talk…I’m from California and we continually send Barbara Boxer back as a senator, and she’s just as bad, if not worse!
Damn…I need a drink!
Jul 15, 2008 - 2:00 pm 14. keithacita:another rich marxist that wants to cripple and destroy america. what a congress. can’t wait til the go on their month long summer vacation in august. there should be mandatory drug testing for all of congress. there’s something very wrong going on. why are we paying medical for all these millionaires. there should be an asset test for them too, let them pay their own way. they hardly ever actually work.
Jul 15, 2008 - 2:14 pm 15. Fat Jolly Penguin:I love pieces like this that are just oozing sarcasm. The mental image of Harry Reid in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts is, I think, more than mere mind bleach can handle.
Jul 15, 2008 - 2:39 pm 16. kabud:well, you made a good point, not one, many points.
But unfortunately you never thought it THROUGH.
Why did you stop in the middle? Or is it because you were educated in this shopping mall regime educational system that makes idiot out of people?
two points.
1.oil and natural gas are enemy weapons. We don’t have enough reserves of them, but Arabs and Russians DO. And energy market is GLOBAL. Automakers produce cars that American market demands. So go figure the results.
2.
In the global world market we, as pathetic idiots as we are, allow FREE trade with NOT FREE totalitarian regimes –
AND THAT IS WHY WE ARE BOUND TO LOSE((
And our defeat will be an enormous world catastrophe.

Jul 15, 2008 - 2:59 pm 18. deguello:I have the answer to this cretin’s prayer:issue a special”green visa”to all strong,able-bodied Mexican illegals willing to pull a rickshaw. That way, Mr and Mrs sixpack can commute to local stores without using the evil toxic gas.As any sweatshop owner will tell you,Mexicans are cheap, desperate plentiful, and easily replaced. For longer trips, I envision a chain of peon relief stations, where exhausted pullers, can be replaced by a new peon every thirty miles or so. Just think: the republicans get cheap labor, the democrats, a new source of easily demagogued, ignorant future voters, and the sierra club and Reid, get pollution free air.Incidentally, we already have peon powered transportation in New York city , using pedicabs. However, rickshaws would be better, less complex, and hence less polluting to manufacture, and also more third world,an advantage for democratic, obamanational, non motorized, incresingly stupid, multicultural America.
Jul 15, 2008 - 3:09 pm 19. uburoisc:The reason I am paying nearly $5 per gallon is because idiots like Harry Reid and other similarly delusional mooncows are pretending that we can replace a carbon economy with a renewable economy in one quick leap. This is pure BS, from one end to the other, and there is not a word of truth to it. Further, every savvy financial adviser and speculator knows just what a preposterous lie it really is, and, as a result, are putting their money down on the truth that petrocarbon is still king, and will be for some time to come.
In a perfect world, the Dems would lose huge in the upcoming election, and John McCain and the conservatives would announce that the new US energy policy will involve immediately building 100 modern nuclear reactors, drilling wherever oil is to be found, building new refineries, using clean coal, and encouraging any and all alternative energy sources to compete in a fair and open energy market. The goal of US energy policy should be to create the greatest amount of energy at the best price. Then, in a matter of hours, watch the price of oil collapse. Goodbye Hugo, goodbye Vlad, goodbye Mullahs.

Jul 15, 2008 - 4:05 pm 22. deguello:uboroisc: In a mediocre world, let alone a perfect one, timorous fearmongering buffoons like Reed would face tar and feathering or worse.Maybe when gas hits $10.00 a gallon, unemploymnet hits double digits, and people freeze in homes they can no longer afford to heat, a new use will be found will be found for environmentalists, their stooges, and all the blacked out lamp posts!
Jul 15, 2008 - 4:32 pm 23. Javelin:Fine, lets drill for more oil, it will help keep the prices under six a gallon. But the long term forecast is for more foreign oil and higher world prices. Since most of that oil money is going to goivernments not too firendly for us, do some math. Why not try both? Maybe if people walked more and drove less there would be less congestion and heart attacks. Instead we play the shallow little game of attack the messenger. We are never going to be self sufficient in oil.
Jul 15, 2008 - 5:02 pm 24. uburoisc:Javelin, true, the US does not have the reserves to be “self-sufficient” in oil, but we do have enough to keep the prices down internationally until enough REAL alternatives are developed, and can make a meaningful difference. Until then, the only real energy sources that can run the demands of an industrial economy are nuclear, hydroelectric, coal, and some geothermal. That’s it, and the environmentalists who control the Democratic Party are opposed to each one of those.
The messenger being attacked, and rightly attacked, is the lunatic environmental idiots who are gratuitously lying about the feasibility of running the United States on biomass, solar, wind and biofuels. It’s not that these technologies cannot make a difference, especially when judiciously used and combination with of other sources, and with increased efficiency, but what has to stop is the pure drivel that alternative energy is ready to shoulder the load; it isn’t, not even close, no way, not now, and it will ruin our economy if we don’t face facts about what will really work, and what is just daydreaming.
As for your suggestion to go for a walk, I’ll just assume you are being facetious and will allow such a silly comment to slide as I shut my car door and turn on the air conditioning.
Jul 15, 2008 - 5:39 pm 25. Scanning the Sphere: quick hits | The Anchoress:[...] Reid says you only dislike Congress because of Bush. If it weren’t for Bush, you’d just love him and the rest of Congress, and Democrats in general! Nice of him to tell you why you feel the way [...]
Jul 15, 2008 - 6:28 pm 26. cedarford:ubaroisc – nice posts.
I would add that for nearly 10 years the public has been propagandized that Global Warming is America’s most urgent problem. Then told that wind and solar are the cure to Global Warming poised to destroy All of Us, ready to replace the oil economy “if only we” put more research into it and less in the military. And meanwhile, that all carbon sources are evil and must be blocked, as well as evil nuclear and evil dams.
Blame the Republicans and the Corporations, too, for pushing our deindustrialization and the modernizing of rival nations – as industrial growth in China rose 12% per year from back in 1992 when they got full access to go for our consumer markets with labor so cheap it undercut everyone, even the Mexican factories – and ever so coincidentally petroleum consumption went up 13% per year as every other year they blithely told the public that such economic growth was impossible to sustain – so don’t worry about lost jobs, wages, or China eating up all natural resources.
The Elites lied, the Republicans lied. The Clinton whores to corporatists and globalism lied.
Jul 15, 2008 - 6:55 pm 27. Jvette:I can answer the question as to why us idiots in Nevada keep reelecting Dingy “Pinky” Reid.
In the election of 2000, the Democrats used scare tactics to convince people that Harry would be in a position of power and could stop the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository at the test sight. Reid barely won against John Ensign with a margin of about 650 votes. Of course, John Ensign could have asked for recounts, but he didn’t. Our other senator was not seeking reelection and Ensign was almost assured of his seat. Of course he was elected and I can’t say how much better he is than Harry other than the fact that he is way easier on the eyes.
As for the 2006 election which put Harry in office until 2010, once again, Nevadans were told that “our dear Harry” would be elected Senate leader and he would be the most powerful Nevada politician evah! The joke is on us of course, as Harry has done nothing beneficial for our state.
I can tell you that his star has nearly burned out here in Nevada. His favorable ratings are way down. He has opposed two new clean coal plants that would bring jobs, industry and cheaper energy costs to Nevada. Though the areas where they are to be built want them very badly, Harry is standing in the way. For a state that has a high need of energy, all those lights use a lot of electricity, Harry’s position on this is unpopular. It is my fervent wish that he will lose, ala Daschle, in 2010.
BTW, I first voted in 1984, Harry Reid personally filled out my new voter registration form and I voted for him a few times. I voted against him in the last election. So, I am partly responsible for this debacle. I humbly offer my apologies and hope that my last vote, while it didn’t get rid of him, partly makes up for past stupidity.
Jul 15, 2008 - 10:01 pm 28. Jarhead:Jvette – Just don’t do it again! I used to work for Nevada Power, so I know the squeeze they (now Sierra Pacific) are in. Most of the power from the Hoover damn goes to CA so of course they have to use coal.
When I lived in Nevada, I never encountered anyone who cared about Yucca Mountain. These are people who used to sit on their cars to watch nuclear explosions at the test site. Yucca would be a good source of non-casino jobs and money.

Jul 16, 2008 - 7:45 am 30. MarkD:Right on the money.
We seriously need to consider term limits on all of these jokers in government. They lose track of reality in the Washington Beltway. One term, no re-election ever, and you can’t go back to be a lobbyist. Go back home and get a real job.
Two words: shale oil. The US has the worlds largest oil reserves and it is commercially viable at less than half of todays prices. Thanks to the idiots we elect to Congress, we won’t have it.
Vote your bums out, or you are part of the problem. Watch while they burn food, refuse to put in anything that will spoil their views, wreck the economy, and promise you clean power from unicorns on treadmills. Some day we may have it, but that day isn’t now. It’s not the next time you fill up, or pay your utility bill either.
Vote them out, or shut up. The problem is you and me. We let them forget for whom they work.
Jul 16, 2008 - 9:23 am 31. deguello:Javelin:Reid is not the messenger, let’s get this straight:like most democrats, he’s the sock puppet of the environmentalists. How can we know whether or not we can be self-sufficient in oil, when we can’t drill and use what we have, including shale oil. Domestic oil, clean coal, and nuclear, can make us energy self-sufficient.Otherwise we will need third world solutions, like rickshaws. See my earlier post.
Jul 16, 2008 - 11:10 am 32. Dawn:What a great piece. I thoroughly enjoyed the tongue in cheek. Has anyone thought of firing Reid AND Pelosi? In all other jobs, poor production and continued blunders gives a pink slip.
Jul 16, 2008 - 12:13 pm 33. naftali:I could take one more jab at Harry Reid, but I won’t.
Instead I will say that going whole hog towards energy independence will clear up the economic ills the very night such an announcement is made. It will require great resources, both public and private, create jobs, give investors a clear direction in which to move, eventually refill the depleted capital of banks–initially from investment and eventually from deposits from overseas sales of energy and energy technology. We’ve done this during WWII, retooling America, and we did it with the space program. We’re very good at this. There were protests during WWII, and during the growth of the space program, but enough people got on with the show to transform the nation.
The only thing interesting about Reid is that the rest of America already knows what I just said, and will become increasingly upset with Congress for not getting on with it. So, how low can Congressional approval ratings go? Is zero a statistical possibility?
Jul 16, 2008 - 1:22 pm 34. Rubicon:Republicans AND Democrats are in bed with corporations. Corporations are not all bad. Oil is not all bad. Coal is not all bad.
Jul 16, 2008 - 2:15 pm 35. Jvette:What is bad is that every attempt to resolve issues until we have viable alternatives, are being blocked. As others have pointed out, resources blocked by those who want all to believe alternative sources are ready to shoulder the entire energy burden of America and the world. Alternatives are up to twenty years away from being able to shoulder the energy burden of this nation &/or the world.
We really do need, “all of the above,” at this time. But those pushing CO2 cuts demand we do away with oil, gas, and coal, NOW. Never mind to do so would crush this nation & perhaps the world economy. They want us to believe that the sacrifice is worth it.
Well is it? Al’s CO2 theory (and it is a theory) is finally being challenged by real scientists who deal in climate issues. Over 31,000 have signed the Oregon petition to the UN IPCC reports & Al’s claims. They want Al to finally prove what he refuses to debate with anyone who knows the scientific facts on CO2.
Reid & co. are pandering to their environmental base who are also pushing for more government, more regulation, less free market. Guess whose book these folks have taken pages out of for their political positions? (Think Karl Marx)
Too bad the public wants to buy the media hype that only Republicans are responsible for this mess. Its ALL of them folks. We need to dump the current crowd and elect people from ANY party who favor the people and not the system!
By the way, oil industry driller friend of mind tells me we can have gasoline from offshore wells at the pumps within 18 to 22 months, if we start today. All that is needed is for it to be prioritized. The 10, 15, 20 year comments by Reid & co. are pure lies!
And why is the enviro movement blocking Coal-gas liquification? Its the best alternative & with a 250 year or more supply, we would really be independent until we can develop viable financial & operational alternatives.
To be honest, I think the thing that scares people the most about Yucca Mountain is the question of transporting the waste here. Most people are not concerned about what will happen once it’s gone underground. For those of you who don’t know, Yucca Mountain is a big hole in the ground where nuclear weapons were tested up until a few years ago.
And you are right, we do not get the electricity generated from the dam. I remember when I first came to Nevada in 1980, we had the lowest cost of living, especially utilities in the country. Boy, that has sure changed!
Jul 16, 2008 - 4:54 pm 36. Dr. Shalit:“…And the Pony Express Shall Ride Again…” As the rest of us have to avoid stepping in Horse Manure as in the 19th Century. Jul 16, 2008 - 5:58 pm 37. Mike:Let’s see, Harry’s hometown and base, Las Vegas, surely doesn’t waste energy by burning lights all night,or excessive air conditioning. At least he and Algore don’t ride in Limo’s or fly in private, fuel guzzeling luxury jets, or live in mansions that use 20 times the average American home. Because if they did, it would make me really angry.
Jul 16, 2008 - 8:47 pm 38. ZEITGEIST:[...] GOOD LUCK WITH THAT: Asking Harry Reid to lead by example on energy. [...]
Jul 16, 2008 - 9:17 pm 39. John Corn:Reid’s position of fossile fuel would instantly end Las Vegas as a city, much less as a playground for gambling, entertainment and retirement. Too bad he’s not up for re-election tomorrow as I doubt he’d garner 10% of the vote. Who would miss him.
What a pathetic excuse for a Senator. Sure reflects well on the Democrat party.
Jul 16, 2008 - 10:04 pm 40. Joe:Oil Shale, Coal-Gas Liquification, one of the largest oil fields in the world under the Carribean, nuclear, hydroelectric and yes, even solar and wind; the US could easily be energy independent by 2020.
To make it more fun, we add in the Canadian oil reserves and tar sands, and Mexico’s oil and we create an energy independent North America. (As an added note, Venezuela’s Oil and tar sands are massive. Chavez will croak sooner or later, at which point we become very friendly again with Venezuela.)
Jul 16, 2008 - 10:59 pm 41. Joe:Two more things: Breeder reactors and pebble-bed reactors. (Not only could we make nuclear even more absurdly safe than it is, we could massively reduce nuclear waste.)
Jul 16, 2008 - 11:01 pm 42. LarryD:All the good hydroelectric sites in the US are already developed. Solar and wind both have severe scaling issues and can’t provide consistent power on demand, requiring expensive and inefficient load leveling power storage. And I’ve read that there are already lawsuits to block construction of the transmission lines from a solar project in the Mojave Desert. And there are lawsuits in the name of squirrels and the federal government has placed a moratorium on new solar projects on public land until it studies their environmental impact.
By the way, the myth that rolling down the car windows and turning off the AC improves mileage … busted!
It appears that the turbulence created causes drag, whatever the mechanism, mileage with the windows down is significantly less than with them up, while the car AC has a very minor effect.
Jul 17, 2008 - 7:30 am 43. seeker:I think Reid will lead America to its defeat and destruction.
Jul 17, 2008 - 7:39 am 44. LBR:Here’s a question that I haven’t seen answered… With $4 a gal gas today and most likely $10 a gal in a year or two the American people are getting pissed off. It’s only a matter of time till a replacement fuel is developed. Look at all our universities that are big into the R&D of fuels. Add to them all the private firms that have stepped up their efforts. It’s going to pay off big. The old ‘Follow the Money’ thing… The next BP… But if we and other countries no longer need Arab oil what’s going to happen to the Middle East? Sort of like what happened to the guys involved with whale oil. Big business one day and then bust. Then you have those that say big oil will never allow any new fuels to come out. It would mean the end of them and their huge profits. So, is this something we can get out of?
Jul 17, 2008 - 8:46 am 45. Orion:I expect that before this is all over we’ll see Reid and Pelosi don hard hats and poise for pictures on oil derricks, to prove that they aren’t opposed to oil drilling after all. Then after the election they’ll go back to quietly blocking US oil exploration.
IE., they’ll do whatever they have to, to slide through the next election. Then it will be back to business as usual.

Jul 17, 2008 - 11:10 pm 47. Garry King:Senator Reid should also walk to buy the groceries that doubled in price and take a pay cut like the rest of us. Then again, maybe he should just be sent on a permanent vacation along with the rest of Congress. Are there any sensible voters left in Nevada or have that refugees from California taken over?
