Thank goodness for the good people at NASA.

We need to go back to the Moon, then onwards to Mars, and then the rest of the universe!

Are the feats of Armstrong, Aldrin et al. any less inspirational because they were 100% government-funded?

pch1013:

It takes a solar system to raise a child, apparently.

Morph Aldrin's statement into whatever strawman you wish, but if you doubt how space exploration inspires children, I would say you aren't paying attention. Visit the Space Camp in Huntsville, or even easier, visit a classroom where they talk about it. My own 8 year-old daughter is a prime example, and it's only because I introduced her to the history of the space program. She knows who Aldrin, Armstrong, and Collins are, and she's already inspired to learn more about space, science, and math so she can follow in their footsteps. She might not end up being an astronaut, but you can't argue with the benefits of children being passionate about math and science (and honestly--especially girls).
It's a high-tech world, and math and science are what kids are going to need to learn to succeed in the future.

TimPA: Yet the main thesis of the article is Hillaryism writ (very) large:

"There is compelling evidence that the outreach potential for human space exploration can be a strong positive influence on the interests and educational choices of children."

It takes a solar system to raise a child, apparently.

Wonderful pitch for the moon! I'll echo Andrew Pass' comment above--I'm not a scientist, just a geek for space exploration. Thank you for writing this, because my guess is that most non-scientists wouldn't read this sort of material from a regular astronomy wonk.

Buzz Aldrin, you and the others are my heroes. You're America's and all of mankind's heroes.
My 8 year-old daughter wants to someday go to the moon (or Mars!), and it's because of you and the other Apollo and Gemini astronauts. I only wish I could go myself! I have nothing brilliant to add here--I just want to say thank you.

Sadly, there are many who seem to be philosphically opposed to space travel simply because their political power is based on mooching off the productive classes. If those people "escape", their system won't work anymore.
