Dear PJM (and perhaps Mr. DeOrio),

Why no coverage of the recent groundbreaking election? Why no mention of Hatoyama, his crazy wife and the implications for the US-Japan alliance that has been around since the end of WWII?

Aso flopped worse than Mr. DeOrio predicted. Maybe you should have kept on laughing even as you cried for your country.

There's red meat here. A year on, and lots to say!

Last year, when Aso was running against Fukuda, the media picked up some excitement in Akiba, interviewed a few people who said they were excited (or were led to say so - it's the Japanese media, after all), but I haven't heard much this time around. Could be that the focus is on other things because he actually got the job this time - the manga thing might get him attention (esp. overseas, where, Foreign Minister Aso insisted, manga and anime were Japan's bst-known products), but it's probably not a big confidence builder for an ailing ruling party coming into a general election.

As far as I can tell, he was spotted reading Rozen Maiden in an airport a couple of years back and, when asked about it by reporters, said he was a big fan. I must admit that I myself have never read it. Something about 14 female spirits leading a high school boy back to engagement in the real world after a study-induced nervous breakdown, I hear.

Any chatter in the Akihabara about a kindred spirit becoming PM? I love the anecdote about Aso explaining an manga plot to Fukuda during debate prep. Done like a true fanboy!

Rozen Maiden, though.... Interesting....

The Catholicism is a non-issue, the manga fandom is a bit more of an issue. Neither one, of course, should be a primary issue, but the hard questions are rarely cleared by the press clubs, it seems.

A Catholic otaku and fan, of all things, of Rozen Maiden, as prime minister? Good grief!
