From my limited understanding on current affairs in Taiwan nowadays (I was originally from there, but left over 23 years ago), current Taiwanese traded 'short-term economic gains' with a 'long-term HongKong redux' solution to the re-unification problem. I don't think they even know the implication of their willingness of forfeit a true democracy over freely joining a totalirian regime. Of course, commie China and the wining party wouldn't have emphasized this point.

Alas, short-sightedness is universal everywhere. Nothing, and I repeat, Nothing is worth the prize (or price) of losing the liberty of not just yourself, but those of your children's, and their children's,...

From my limited understanding on current affairs in Taiwan (I was from there originally, but had been in the States for over 23 years), current Taiwanese traded 'short term' tangible economic gains with a 'long term Hong Kong Redux' solution.

Again short-sightedness is universal everywhere. Nothing, and I repeat, Nothing is worth the prize (price) if you trade away the liberty of youself, your children, your children's children...etc.

"It is not, according to Rigger, a “zero-sum” debate in which being pro-Taiwan is defined as being anti-China."

The pity is that, while that's true for Taiwan, it's NOT true for China. The PRC considers ANY pro-Taiwan position to be anti-China by definition.

While Ma is very good at making himself look attractive on TV, he isn't know for having a particularly strong hand for anything. If China wants Ma to bark to their tune, he'll do it as long as he looks good in the papers. Ma is Mr. Clinton without the cigars!

I've told relatives in Taiwan that if they want real independence from China, it will require more than just winning elections. Unfortunately none of them seem to willing to pay the necessary price. Again, a pity.

Am I the only one that remembers that Jimmy Carter threw Taiwan under the bus in the late 70's (along with Iran and the Panama Canal) because he didn't have the balls to stand up to the then posturing Red Chinese?

It doesn't matter what the dynamics are in Taiwan, so long as there is a neo-stalinist, revisionist presense in the electorate and Congress of the United States (known locally as Democrats).
