Obama as Nero

The candidate preaches to the choir.

As Barack Obama leaves Denver, I hope he remembers to fetch his fiddle: He’ll need something to play while the Democratic Party and its high hopes crumble, and he waxes poetic about the adoration of the masses he felt while perched a mile high at Invesco Field.

So, yeah, the palatial columns that made up the gaudy “West Wing” stage at Obama’s acceptance production reminded me of the cheesy set design in swords-and-sandals epics. But what really popped into my head was the image of Peter Ustinov as Nero in “Quo Vadis?” — “Do I live for the people or do the people live for me? … These people expect me to shine both day and night!” The left would have it that only the Republicans regard the masses as plebs, but Obama knows these masses as his loyal flock.

So loyal, in fact, that style was an easily accepted substitute for substance at this week’s convention. On a stage that looked like an Oscar for Best Performance by a Long-Winded Politician (Biden!) was going to be handed out any minute, the loyal masses saw a well-scripted throwing in of the towel by Hillary Clinton, in shots that made you wish there was an open mic on her, Bill, or even an at-times steely-faced Michelle Obama. The Republican crossover speech from former Congressman Jim Leach was a snoozing counterpoint to Zell Miller at the 2004 Republican National Convention or even how we know Joe Lieberman will be received at next week’s RNC.

And the policy points? Stunning! Bill Clinton intimated that Republicans hate autistic kids. John Kerry showed his hide is still plenty chapped over that Swift boat thing. Joe Biden struck the obligatory pro-war concession (Afghanistan) for the anti-war party. And Barack Obama drove home the point that he won’t be upstaged by anyone, essentially snagging Biden’s spotlight night Wednesday with a surprise appearance and impromptu speech at the Pepsi Center.

Was the weeklong production enough to net an Obama win in November?

One thing apparent in Denver was that the far left thinks the moderate-left platitudes put on for the media show aren’t left enough. A protester on every corner reminded you about the evil Republicans, but also chided the Democrats as traitorous to their “anti-imperialist” causes. And as amusing as many of the protests were, there were some stomach-churning undertones: A woman promoting abortion and defending Iran at the same literature-laden booth. A bumpersticker for sale that proclaimed “Satan’s a Republican.” Chants that lumped the F-bomb and America in the same sentence. A silk-screen display showing the faces of Iran (translation: “don’t attack, you evil U.S.!”) yet didn’t include a single imprisoned journalist, tortured democracy activist, or devious mullah in the happy, smiling bunch.

….and in common with the speeches of Bill and Hillary, if you read between the lines it didn’t REALLY support Obama’s candidacy.

We must have watched two different conventions. But – I recall a little fact of life. If you squish your face really hard, concentrate and stare, you’ll see anything you want. People trying to find reasons to hate will find hate. People trying to see untruth will see lies. People trying to find something (anything) wrong with planned events will write and publish their own views. The challenge is that if you are so busy trying to convince me of your truth without listening or thinking about my truth, then there is no truth between us. That distance grows every time you complain about no one listening to your complaining.

Great political theater, but ultimately just that same tired schtick he’s been pounding at over the last year. He had a grand opportunity to introduce something new, create something memorable other than a visual spectacle before a large crowd. It shows what an empty vessel he is. The media will fall for it because they loved the visuals and holding him accountable for what little he actually said is too much hard work.

He couldn’t give people a reason why they should vote for him because he hasn’t achieved anything other than winning elections.

Especially funny to me was his call for non-partisanship by launching a litany of partisan attacks against Bush (who isn’t running) and McCain. The best thing is that McCain gets a quick chance at rebuttal next week.

Aug 29, 2008 - 4:34 am 7. Emily:

Obama’s mother has a PH.D. in anthropology, not exactly the “single mother” waitress, hard-knocks fare. In Indonesia, she married a very well-to-do Indonesian businessman and employed many servants. Obama was raised by his grandfather and grandmother, who was a bank VP. This whole idea that OBama somehow experiences an underpriveldged existence during his youth is such a load of crap. Obama has made it his policy not to do anything, but merely to package himself and his past. Why doesn’e someone, anyone, call him on it?

Dumb and Dumber Team 1 has been chosen and we will know Team 2 next week. Can’t wait to see which will win the Who Can Tell the Biggest Lie Contest in November. Hopefully we still have some people intelligent enough to check the voting records of these clowns before casting votes. Don’t believe the multiple lies from both in the non stop speeches and attack ads between now and then.

Aug 29, 2008 - 6:08 am 10. ElliotNC:

1. Why does Obama continue to drum the fact that his grandfather was a veteran, as if that somehow rubs off on him? He has no experience or understanding of the military mindset, he should leave it alone rather than continue to drive home this feeble connection. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side, the same woman who became an expatriot during the Viet Nam war and moved to Indonesia. At least Bill Clinton had the good sense to not try to build up his military service bona fides when he ran against Bob Dole.

2. Saying that we should not have shifted our focus from Afghanistan to Iraq is like opening a door and walking into the end of it. Doesn’t he realize that for two and a half years he has chaired the senate committee that has oversight over our Afghanistan involvement and he has never even bothered to call a meeting?

Aug 29, 2008 - 6:13 am 11. misanthropicus:

Even failing rockets do have a trajectory.
Glibama’s march is certainly spectacular but it doesn’t aim to what should be its essential objective – convincing people that he is competent and experienced enough to be the commander-in-chief and the foreign affairs helmsman of this country during the very brutal years we’ll face.
No matter how much he’s waxing about his uniqueness, no matter how much his realatives and neighbors vouch that he can do it, this question (besides a few other, very legitimate ones) will keep hounding him – is he adequate for the office he aims to occupy? Celebrating Luther King, dreaming, hoping, and describing in pre-sophomoric terms the severe predicaments (economic, military, culturally, etc.) this country has to sail amogst, is not an answer.
No, he’s not qualified.
And the latest piece of baggage, and a quite damning one – Vladimir Putin @ the Kremlin crew have clearly shown that this is the man they’d like to deal with. This last, very sobering fact that America’s enemies prefer Obama (in case one still needs to ponder Obama’s inadequacy), should dampen any willingness to accept him in the White House.

Aug 29, 2008 - 6:15 am 12. Jesus Warrior:

The scary thing about Obama is nothing he says or do, but the media reaction to what comes from him. He gave a Clinton type speech to his loyal subjects, media proclaimed the gloves came off McCain will now have to fight. It McCain that want to debate not Obama face to face, not with the help of a moderator, telepromptor, nor any aides. Alone on a giant stage looking like the westwing of Obama dream, on the anniversity of a true African American who had a dream. Compromises on abortion, gay rights, and other anti-christian matters are tickets to hell democrats are proud to give Americans in the name of peace, unity, and change. Electing a drug dealer to be the leader of the free world is ignorant and incompetent as most civil servants that work to deny Due process to all Americans. Brutality is have a record that shows no decision making on any key votes, nor holding any meetings of importance about international matters that Obama was in charge of then complain about the inactivity of the country about the region of the world. Obama cut off Afghanistan to all Americans by refusing to hold Congressional meetings on the committee in which he was the chairman. The place where he could have gained international creditabilty if President accepted his recommendations or refused and suffered adverse effects in the lost of life in refusing to implement plan of the Obama committee recommendation. Obama in the White House means no cabinet meetings that is scary.

About those Greek columns, Ms Johnson, maybe Obama borrowed them from the Bush campaign circa 2004 (yes old Bushie spoke to his “then” adoring crowd at his acceptance speech, in front of greek columns and giant American Flags, pity he didn’t take his supposed devotion to Americans very seriously..LOL)

As for Jim Leach’s “snoozer of a speech (supposedly in contrast to that of crack-pot Zell Miller’s) I have a 5 spot that says you didn’t listen to it, so here you go:

“In troubled times, it was understood that country comes before party, that in perilous moments mutual concern for the national interest must be the only factor in political judgments. This does not mean that debate within and between the political parties should not be vibrant. Yet what frustrates so many citizens is the lack of bipartisanship in Washington and the way today’s Republican Party has broken with its conservative heritage.

The party that once emphasized individual rights has gravitated in recent years toward regulating values. The party of military responsibility has taken us to war with a country that did not attack us. The party that formerly led the world in arms control has moved to undercut treaties crucial to the defense of the earth. The party that prides itself on conservation has abdicated its responsibilities in the face of global warming. And the party historically anchored in fiscal restraint has nearly doubled the national debt, squandering our precious resources in an undisciplined and unprecedented effort to finance a war with tax cuts.

America has seldom faced more critical choices: whether we should maintain an occupational force for decades in a country and region that resents western intervention or elect a leader who, in a carefully structured way, will bring our troops home from Iraq as the heroes they are. Whether it is wise to continue to project power largely alone with flickering support around the world or elect a leader who will follow the model of General Eisenhower and this president’s father and lead in concert with allies.

Whether it is prudent to borrow from future generations to pay for today’s reckless fiscal policies or elect a leader who will shore up our budgets and return to a strong dollar. Whether it is preferable to continue the policies that have weakened our position in the world, deepened our debt and widened social divisions or elect a leader who will emulate John F. Kennedy and relight a lamp of fairness at home and reassert an energizing mix of realism and idealism abroad.

The portfolio of challenges passed on to the next president will be as daunting as any since the Great Depression and World War II. This is not a time for politics as usual or for run-of-the-mill politicians. Little is riskier to the national interest than more of the same. America needs new ideas, new energy and a new generation of leadership.

Hence, I stand before you proud of my party’s contributions to American history but, as a citizen, proud as well of the good judgment of good people in this good party, in nominating a transcending candidate, an individual whom I am convinced will recapture the American dream and be a truly great president: the senator from Abraham Lincoln’s state—Barack Obama. Thank you.”

Aug 29, 2008 - 8:47 am 17. C.B. Stubie:

If we were all being unemotionally analytical here and throughout this election cycle as we should be, it would be unproblematic to admit that both Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama are good people. They are both intelligent and articulate and they both care about this country. They differ on their solutions to the issues we have at hand and that is why they are competing in this election. Neither is a God nor an Antichrist – they are simply people. It is sad to see at this especially difficult time that so many people in this country who also care about what is happening are expressing themselves in such an emotional and non-productive way. This manner of discourse is natural and perhaps even a little exciting in High School, but it honestly doesn’t suit the level of importance of the task at hand – selecting the next president of the United States. Both men are great men and have many things to be proud of and it would be so much more remarkable if they and all of us would treat this campaign with the respect that the American people (us) deserve. When a political campaign starts on a level as low as this one has already reached, no one is well served except those that profit from the disorder. I Love this Country and it truly makes me sad and embarrassed to see the demeaning level this entire process has reached. Perhaps if we all handled this political process like the proud and civilized Americans we are deep down inside we might come out on top this time instead of the politicians.

Aug 29, 2008 - 8:52 am 18. FreakedOut:

I just listened to the WGN radio show where the reporter investigating the Annenberg Challenge (Obama’s only executive experience) was hosted. I am so seriously disturbed, I’m practically speechless. Obama is so far radical left, that I am shocked anyone could support him. The moderate face he is presenting is part of his training at the Gamaliel Foundation, where they teach you to publicly disguise your radicalism. He actually spent time as a community organizer trainer, where he trained others in Black Liberation Theology (”If God doesn’t hate whites, then we should kill God”)

I don’t even think my friends who voted for Kucinich in the primaries could support him. He is way left of Kucinich.

At the Annenberg Challenge he and Bill Ayers funneled 110 million dollars in federal grant monies intended for chicago’s failing schools into ideological organizations. They systematically rejected proposals designed to help kids with basic skills and instead funded a giant Juneteenth party, and funded Ayers’ personal Maoist education group. Chicago was the only city who received an Annenberg grant that measured zero improvement.

I guess I consider myself a moderate democrat, but right now I am seriously freaked out. What the hell are we doing????

This woman does not understand history at all. Fiddling and asking for change are two entirely different approaches.

Obama is nothing like Nero.

Nero never said that everything was wrong with the nation and change was desperately needed.

Nero said everything was fine with Rome and things should remain exactly the same.

In fact, McCain is the Nero, because he wants to have 4 more years of the Bush era. He is the one who is fiddling

Aug 29, 2008 - 9:20 am 20. Fred:

Wishful thinking on the part of a partisan hack. The set was so understated that you couldn’t even see the columns during the speech – as stated above, Bush used the same theme in 2004. The cheap shots – the one liners – this is the smell of desperation and loss – how obvious can you be. And now – with McCain’s pick of a VP with less experience, little education, under investigation, from the state with the smallest population – an ex-beauty queen – the fear becomes palpable and the pander becomes obvious – only McCain would pick a younger version of his trophy wife as a VP with a field packed with accomplished and educated women – only McCain…

should be a good race.

This obsession with drapes and other trivia is a measure of the sheer lack of seriousness of the GOP today. As Obama put it perfectly they want to make a big election about small things, in this case drapes. You can’t get much smaller. Whatever your politics it was impossible last night not to be blown away by this guy. His achievement in getting there alone was stunning and a testament to the realization of the American dream which we love to talk about. Contrast Obama’s bearing and formidable performance with the current occupant and presumptive Republican candidate and it makes you wince. The news that McCain has chosen the totally unknown recently elected woman governor of a remote state who appears to have all kinds of weird views and some involvement in a tawdry little family dust up tells me the GOP has lost touch with reality. He passed over Romney for this, it’s truly bizarre.

FreakedOut…you need to take off your tin-foil hat. soon.

So Bridget you claim you heard Leach’s speech…can you honestly say that none of it was a thoughtful assessment of the mire in which the Conservative movement finds itself post-Bush style neo-conservatism? Be a party loyal is one thing Ms.Johnson, wearing blinders as an attempt to block out reality is another.

John there are some serious, thoughtful, Conservative thinkers out there who haven’t sipped the kool-aid; Andrew Bacevich, Kevin Phillips, and Mickey Edwards, I urge you to seek out their writings. I also highly reccomend reading up on Teddy Roosevelt and Eisenhower, 2 very fine Republican Presidents past.

As for Ms Palin, ex “Miss Wasilia,” with less than 2 years as Governor, as the VEEP who might be POTUS if 72 yr old McCain keels over in office, well the mind boggles.

Now if McCain had picked Kay Baily Hutchinson, I think the dems would be in trouble.

To look at the face of a major historical moment and see nits requires a major ocular inversion, for which I suppose those so dedicated should be congratulated.

Obama’s acceptance speech was not tired, nor same, nor old, nor vague. He liad out a platform that makes sense and a reason to accomplish it.

If you who are looking for better hope on the other side of the aisle do not rise above the bitterness and hate with which you have allowed yourselves to get infected, you won’t find what you want, because you will be perpetually haunted by your own jaded internal ashes.

Men, women in suites making fancy speeches. Saying all the right things to appease an unresearched crowd. That’s all it was, a whole lot of mumble jumble. It makes no difference whether they are Democrats or Republicans. The fate of this world has been decided by the secretive true powers, they most definitely were not making speeches at DNC. Those that were are show dolls, while the Elites were pulling the strings & forming loud words through them puppets. Yes, they talk socialism & equal possession amongst people as if the idea are those have not’s will one day share at equal value with the rest. Rather, it will be quite the reverse. Them that have will lose & brought down to the poverty stricken. That is controlled policy that can only be put to practice through strict government martial law. This type of system can only work via communism. Sovereign countries will be something of the past. A NWO is in the works under a One World Government. The Elites will be up on the pyramid & their puppets below them. The large majority will be at the bottom looking up for falling crumbs to survive. They will need to oppress the people, to control every aspect of our lives for survival. It is called ultimate power. Don’t be caught up in a hoax. Civilizations have done it in the past, the results have been unpleasant. What makes you think this time around is any different. They are different players for the same cause. Evil looking to control never exposes itself for what it really is until ultimate power is conceived.

The Devil roams about like a lion seeking whom to devour. He has not been captured as of yet. He isn’t retired nor is he recovering from sickness. Instead he is more determined then ever to accomplish his long life dream-that is to rule the world through his son the Antichrist. His agents are well at work.

Be wise & vigilante–not foolish & gullible.

BARACK Obama’s acceptance speech as presidential contender for the democratic party was very clearly the greatest and most inspired political speech I have ever witnessed. I think that it was as important as the moon walk in ‘69!

Here is a visionary who has a solid understanding of what government can do for the American people to help them thrive and realize their true potential. I want a political leader who is an idealist and a realist, as he is. Truly, I felt thrilled. I can imagine reading what Obama has to say on a daily basis. It will be so elevating.

I don’t even like to drag myself down to imagine a tired, old, war-scarred republican with a small town type ready-made running mate appearing in my newspaper daily with small-minded scare tactics that don’t work and will bankrupt our great country!

But, I don’t want to dwell on the opposition, because that would not be high-minded enough, as Obama rightly points out. It is so great to have a person in the flesh who combines so many truly great qualities of statesmanship! I love the man.

****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.
Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials, they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.

This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.

**INNOCENT AMERICANS ARE DENIED REAL HC RIGHTS WITH THEIR FEDERAL APPEALS !!
This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!

Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!

For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.

It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.

This FACADE and HORROR of our Federal Appeal proce$$ is not worthy of the Greatest Country In The World!
