Obama’s Visit to His Ill Grandma: Refreshingly Genuine
The gesture brought a moment of authenticity to the campaign fakery.
It is perhaps too much to expect genuineness from our candidates for high office. Since the founding of the republic, candidates for president have presented a version of themselves to the voter their own mothers would hardly recognize. Even Washington was not immune from this kind of image-building.
Chairing the Constitutional Convention in 1787, George Washington sat stoically while debate raged about what powers to grant the chief executive. Some members wanted nothing to do with creating the office of president, believing it smacked of monarchy. Others saw a strong executive as a necessity — a head of state the nation could rally to in times of crisis.
Despite not saying a word, Washington was dominating the debate simply because everyone in the hall knew who would be the first president. There was no question in anyone’s mind that they were enumerating powers that would be exercised by the silent, heroic figure in front of them. Washington cultivated this image of hero/statesman. He was still the toast of Europe and worshiped at home after having shocked everyone by resigning his commission rather than doing what victorious generals usually did — ride in on a white charger and set himself up as a king or dictator.
Washington’s great biographer James Flexner writes how carefully Washington nurtured and promoted this image of himself despite being beset by self doubt and worry that he wouldn’t be remembered by history quite as kindly as his contemporaries viewed him. In truth, the public face of Washington was as different from the real man as almost any politician we know today.
Lincoln promoted himself as a rail splitting, log cabin living backwoodsman despite hating manual labor and schooling himself to get away from the drudgery of life on the frontier.
Teddy Roosevelt was a reckless soldier, so hungry for a glorious victory in the Spanish-American War that he began the charge up San Juan Hill without orders. He lost more men to heat exhaustion than to Spanish bullets and other officers played a more important role in taking the heights, but it was TR, with a genius for self-promotion, who made himself a hero along with his regiment with the catchy name of the “Rough Riders” (they were actually dismounted cavalry and Roosevelt was the only one on a horse when they reached the summit).
Ronald Reagan used to ride horses using English tack, dressed in hip boots and jodhpurs, looking quite handsome but hardly like a western hero. Reagan’s handlers were horrified that he was about to meet the press looking like an English dandy rather than John Wayne. From then on, Reagan was never seen in jodhpurs again.
Today, the candidates have a team of image makers — people who are responsible for creating a portrait of the candidate for the TV cameras. Each stop on the campaign is carefully stage-managed with the proper background and other visuals. Each ad is pored over frame by frame, line by line, until the exact effect is achieved. Speeches are written to appeal to specific groups using language tested and retested on focus groups to gauge the emotional reaction of the audience.
It’s about as genuine as Pamela Anderson’s cleavage.

1. Ed Wallis:“With less than two weeks to go in the campaign and the race still considered close by many, Barack Obama is flying 5,000 miles to Hawaii in order to visit the woman who took care of him and taught him so much during his formative years.”
ANOTHER SUCKA JUST DRINKIN’ THAT KOOL-AID.
PR stunt.
Sympathy vote.
Crisis huddle.
“…authentic human emotion…”?’! What a chump, and anyone else who believes that one.

Oct 23, 2008 - 1:04 am 3. Dave Surls:Spare me.
Everyone visits their grandmothers when they’re ill, if they can.
That’s what you’re supposed to do. You don’t get any extra brownie points just for doing your duty.

So cynical.
Oct 23, 2008 - 3:24 am 5. RE:Mr Moran,
Please do us all a favor and leave this sort of pap to Oprah. The is the same person Obama through under the bus when he thought it advantageous during the primaries.
Oct 23, 2008 - 3:34 am 6. Lisa:So genuine are his feelings for his typically white, racist grandmother that when he was Hawaii, he went to see her alone.. without his wife or his kids.
Oct 23, 2008 - 3:43 am 7. Herr Morgenholz:Still recovering from bus injuries?
Cynical? You bet. The means justify the ends with these people.
Oct 23, 2008 - 4:03 am 8. susan:absolutely, in spite of the fact that she is not ill like it is portrayed, (she was in hospital a good 2 weeks ago and you never heard it anywhere because zerobama was high in the polls), I bet they are praying she doesn’t make it to be able to play the pity card.
A while ago, this woman was a typical white woman with white prejudices, in spite of the fact that the money wasted for zerobama schooling and leftist indoctrination were white money, and now he pretends to give a damn about her.
You’re right, zerobama is as genuine as a 0 dollar bill
Oct 23, 2008 - 4:10 am 9. Perry:A lawyer, Andy Martin, is now in Hawaii and has filed a petition to release Obama’s real birth certificate from the public record. Obama is blocking it. Anybody wonder why?

Obama is as genuine as a three dollar bill.
Pray for America.

Oct 23, 2008 - 4:15 am 11. turfmann:Why now? When my grandmother began failing I wasted no time getting to the hospital to be with her and my family. I did not wait three weeks or whatever it has been since Mrs. Dunham left the hospital. I wish her nothing but a quick and full recovery – she certainly seems like a wonderful woman. I wouldn’t take my eye off of Mr. Obama for one second while he was in Hawaii. Something is fishy here.
Oct 23, 2008 - 4:34 am 12. Chris in Toronto:What’s up with Obama, anyway? Where the hell are is priorities? First up, let me say I hope the Obamagramma survives her hip problems. I try to never wish ill on a person; I can disagree with them, plot the demise of their positions, hate everything they represent, but I never wish them, personally, ill‚ I want them alive to feel the humiliation of their defeat. Righteous victory! And I want them to live long lives anguishing in what their choices have wrought while I’ve long-since forgotten them. [I’m good at forgetting things; just ask my friend James **wink** and he’ll regal you with stories of my absentmindedness. All true.] Besides which, it’s bad Karma. I’m betting Obamagramma is glad to not be relying on “commodity healthcare” right about now, though. I’ve maintained for a long time that the Universe has a perverse sense of humour. To me, humour subsumes irony. This is a case in point.
So, with that out of the way, if I’ve got this straight, Obama ridiculed McCain when he suspended his campaign (and possibly the debate) for returning to Washington to use the authority afforded him by his stature as possible next president (an authority, incidentally, also afforded Obama) to help pilot the Hindenburg that is the US economy through flak-filled skies.
What did Obama do with this authority? “Present”, which is the one-word term for his actual answer, “call me if you need me”. Of course, he was in debate camp at the time. This by itself is telling enough.
But now Obama is suspending his campaign for a “personal” matter? And the press is fawningly gushing about the Obamagramma’s “inspirational role” (yeah, like her letting him be mentored as a wee bairn by a Communist organizer driven from the mainland) etc blah blah f’in’ blah.
Give—me—a—break!
Obama suspends his campaign over a personal issue after lambasting McCain for suspending his over a NATIONAL CRISIS? And nobody is calling him on it? WHY?
sheesh **spit** **shakes lowers head while closing eyes and shaking head**
Let’s see, what else is going on in Hawai’i that concerns Obama at this time. Hmm. **rubs chin between thumb and forefinger** There’s that new lawsuit filed against him* the other day. Maybe he’s remembered where, long ago, he buried his official Hawai’ian birth certificate in the red, iron rich soil in a ti tree grove at the advice of Frank; that’d sure come in handy right about now, what with the Hawai’i case and the original Berg case and all.
Oct 23, 2008 - 4:44 am 13. Tony:Perhaps Obama whisking off to be with his ill grandmother is genuine. I’m happy to assume it is.
However, is there anyone who can honestly tell me that his enormous PR team didn’t jump with glee at the news of her illness and the PR spin they could put on this? THAT is why it is hard to give this kind of story any value. This all has a touch of the “Jo Moore” about it shall we say… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jo_Moore
Good on Obama personally for doing the thing that any decent human being should do but it is a nothing event and this article is nonsense.
Oct 23, 2008 - 4:56 am 14. Boris:“I bet they are praying she doesn’t make it to be able to play the pity card.”
Wow, you guys are scum.
Oct 23, 2008 - 4:59 am 15. RustyG:Maybe he can swing by and check on his brother too. Maybe bring him a board or a piece of tin for his shack. You know….. spread the wealth around.
Oct 23, 2008 - 5:09 am 16. susan:boris, to be defined scum by lowlife like you is an honor. And yes, count the second til he comes out lecturing us about the grave illness of his beloved grandma (still the same white woman with white prejudices, that he’s currently picking up from under the bus for 5 minutes, when it suits)
Oct 23, 2008 - 5:30 am 17. Jaguar:McCain suspended his campaign for a day to “save” the economy. Later he changed his mind. If he took a strong position at the time and vote NO in the final account his lead over Obama would be of about 15 points now. On the other hand the Obama campaign has a shadow advisor that is simply brilliant! The trip to Hawaii, exactly at this time, making that huge sacrifice, will give him a million of so of female and elder voters who will say “What a wonderful man, he leaves the campaign, the presidency, all, for his ill grandmother”! But the more brilliant part is that the McCain campaign can say nothing more than “We are sorry senator, wishing your grandma a speedy recovery”. Anything else would be taken by the MSM and make him a heartless person… This was a move that will bring a lot of votes for Obama, don’t you worry about it. When his mother was in a hospital, figthing camcer and insurance companies the great lawyer did nothing to help at least with her fight againt the insurers. Obama genuine??? Yep! Inj your dreams! I just wonder who his advisor is, he is better than Rove was for Bush… I bet this advisor is a great chess player.
Oct 23, 2008 - 5:34 am 18. sara:Give me a break about the Kansas heartland values. G’ma and G’pa raised a daughter who hated America and married socialists. G’ma and G’pa moved to Hawaii. Typical Kansans don’t move to Hawaii, and consort with Communist poets.

Oct 23, 2008 - 5:37 am 19. ic:A photo-op to calm the “typical white” that his grandma is white? Like the whites who claim “some of my friends are black” to counter accusations of racism.
Oct 23, 2008 - 5:59 am 20. sunshine2:So the birth Certificate lawsuit is in court as we speak. Why doesn’t he publically raise the issue and share his public refutation with evidence?
I think he is scared someone will ask grannie if she was at the hospital. Traveled to Kenya to watch her daughter deliver.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:01 am 21. Fred Beloit:Gee, Rick, you’ve got me all misty-eyed…snif. When does the great man actually, you know, leave?
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:02 am 22. keebs:Ditto on the ridiculous notion that he is wonderful for doing what any grandson should do.
Pat Bambi on his head for acting like a grown-up.
Spare me.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:02 am 23. Robert Hurley:It is interesting that even a fairly straightforward piece that should have elicited some sympathy for anyone whose grandmother is seriously ill here from Ed Wallis, Susan, RustyG, Turfman, et al show their usual Chirstian hate. I wonder what Bible they get their message from. They seem to be the antithesis of the Good Samaritan.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:15 am 24. momof3:Anyone who thinks this is less than a publicity stunt is foolish at best. The woman’s been sick for weeks, if not months. First she’s a racist, now she’s a grammy he adores and has to go comfort. It makes me ill to see this article here, of all places. The stupidity is creeping through the populace at a stunning rate.
I too think there’s got to be another reason behind the hawaii trip besides the photo op. Nobama does nothing without great benefit to himself.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:17 am 25. McSame:You people are the salt of the Earth. I can’t wait to rub it in your spiteful faces the day after Obama wins.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:23 am 26. liz:The timing of this makes it a PR stunt. If she were truly in grave health, and he truly wanted to see her, he would have been on a plane 3 days ago. Instead, he’s milking this for positive publicity for several days ahead of time. I’m not saying she’s not in poor health, but this has all been carefully orchestrated to paint him in a good light. It’s pretty cynical and nauseating, really.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:28 am 27. susan:robert hurley, it’s the same bible who’s principles inspired obama to be in favour of infanticide, harassing little people like joe the plumber, making fun of war injuries of mccain, drawing a moral equivalence between the victim (israel) and the murderers (muslims), associating himself with people who never showed remorse for trying to bomb innocent people (ayers) or pastors who advocate more 9-11 for their country.
I guess that is the good samaritanian spirit that is more of your hypocritical taste.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:35 am 28. WR Jonas:The birth certificate is not an insignificant issue. If the real indisputable document has been found ( or produced ) it would have taken a lot of time to insert and place the supporting details and verification in position to authenticate the proof. And of course it must be delivered personally , hand to hand.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:38 am 29. Right Wing Nut House » A BREATH OF AUTHENTICITY AMIDST THE CAMPAIGN’S FAKERY:I think the trip is cover for some devious action. It is what the Democrats excel at.Qbama has a real flair for this kind of deception.

Oct 23, 2008 - 6:38 am 30. Tony:Robert,
Of course we are all familiar with how Team Obama like to handle other peoples personal family matters aren’t we. Sarah Palin’s down syndrome child perhaps? Her daughters personal life maybe?
How do you spell hypocrite?
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:41 am 31. rocketeer:RustyG – ROFL!!
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:41 am 32. Valerie:Boris – Scum is a relative term, especially if you’re a Democrat. KKK Robert Bryd, not scum. Jeffries with $90k in his freezer, not scum. Barney Frank with a gay prostitution ring being operated out of his Washington apartment, not scum. Chris Dodd, chairman of the committee that regulates FannieMae/FreddiMac being the number one recipient of “campaign contributions” from these corporations, not scum. Sarah Palin having the nerve to not abort an infant with Downs syndrome, scum. Yeah, I’m really offended at your definitions.
Chris in Toronto – I don’t know why I didn’t see that, but you’re exactly right. Obama gave McCain a bunch of crap about putting his campaign on hold while McCain went back to try to handle the economy falling apart around us, but it’s OK for Obama to put his campaign on hold for personal reasons. I used to think that the double standard was really frustrating, now I know there isn’t a double standard. There is a standard for the Republican candidate, and no standard for the Democrat.
Robert Hurley,
This is an article about a candidate for US president whose campaign is dripping with fraud, and who has been given a free pass by an irresponsible national media. He has taught people to be suspicious.
Another day, another method of cheating on display.
All it took to detect this was a little well-founded skepticism, a little curiousity, and a few simple experiments.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:51 am 33. susan:mcsame, the day after obama wins, you won’t rub it in our faces because you will be forced to parade in the streets for your dear leader.

Oct 23, 2008 - 6:59 am 36. Roy:If he truly loved his grandmother, the woman who raised him, he would’ve stayed longer. Oct 23, 2008 - 7:39 am 38. susan:robert hurley, hypocrisy is your name. In another thread you call me ignorant, while failing to bring real subjects to the table.
Therefore, buy some cheese to your whine. How many people obama threw under the bus when he didn’t need them anymore? Why we should think he’s sincere?
Evidence is that his grandma was seriously ill 2 weeks ago and he didn’t move a finger because he was high in the polls (before the plmber incident).
Now suddenly he’s all caring while his enablers find a way out from the birth certificate scandal.
It’s no wonder that you are one of the guillable idiot thinking he can save the whales and find a cure for cancer.
Oct 23, 2008 - 7:46 am 39. Andy:Rick,
Ignore the haters, this was another great piece. Politics has become a battle where no quarter is given and that to say anything remotely positive about an opponent is betrayal. I, for one, wish there were more Rick Moran’s out there who are able and willing to break out of the simplistic, mean and, frankly, stupid mold of portraying political opponents as the “other” and dehumanizing them as much as possible. Some of the commenters here should be ashamed of themselves – change “Obama” to “McCain” and they could have been lifted from DD or DKos. You people need to take a good, hard look in the mirror.
Keep up the good work Rick.
Oct 23, 2008 - 7:47 am 40. Roy Mustang:Rick has a right to is opionion. Although I do wonder if he has set the bar quite low for Obama. Who would not visit their dying grandmother (who raised him) in this situation?
In any case, this is the minimum amount of respect he can show to someone who took him in. He has not shown any respect beyond that. It wasn’t called “Dreams of my Grandmother”, was it?

“The uncontested absurdities of today are the accepted slogans of tomorrow. They come to be accepted by degrees, by precedent, by implication, by erosion, by default, by dint of constant pressure on one side and constant retreat on the other – until the day when they are suddenly declared to be the country’s official ideology”. ~ Ayn Rand
“Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
Oct 23, 2008 - 7:53 am 43. Jim Baker:— George Santayana (1863–1952)
(& later quoted by Churchill)
Rick,
Obama hasn’t shown you anything remotely resembling a soul, whatever that is. First he uses his grandma as an example of a white racist and now he needs to get out of town so he doesn’t get confronted with more questions about his communist buddies, and because his focus groups are telling him that he is weak in the area of real empathy for other people. It is as simple as that and you think this shows he has soul? Exactly the desired result. The discussion about carefully crafted images is a lot closer to the truth, as usual.
Oct 23, 2008 - 7:54 am 44. AnonymousPatriot:Another carefully planned photo-op by BHO & Co. It’s good to have the drive-by media in the tank for you- all of those cameras and followers and stuff…

BHO does nothing that is not calculated by his inner-sanctum of advisors.
Oct 23, 2008 - 8:13 am 45. Marty:“Accusations of racism, of socialism, of ageism fly through the airwaves and across our monitors, befouling the campaign with their deleterious effect on dialogue.”
The accusations of racism are specious, the accusations of socialism are well-founded, and the accusations of ageism are valid.
Obama and his surrogates are the only ones charging racism, and preemptively by putting words in the mouth of his opponent — McCain has never raised the issue of race; philosophically, Obama is a socialist, if not an outright Marxist and he has indicated as much in his public statements, his associations, and his record; and McCain’s age continues to be “an issue” as though he’s going to keel over any minute — with remarks like “confused,” “out-of-touch,” and jokes about “Depends” from his “friends” in Congress.
Mr. Moran, try to avoid moral relativism. McCain has tried very hard to conduct an honorable campaign while Obama continues to employ some pretty nasty tactics. What’s McCain supposed to do, just make nice while his opponent behaves like a thug? Obama’s claims about McCain are BS, but McCain’s claims about Obama are not. There is a difference and it’s important that the citizenry know this, since the media will not tell them.
And going to Hawaii to see his sick grandmother is certainly laudable, but why is it so remarkable? It’s the least I would expect.

I think if you check I have never called anyone ignorant. I have avoided calling people names because it is childlike. I try to stick to the facts. Calling someone an idiot says more about you than that person whom you don’t know. If I am an idiot then there must be millions of people who will vote for Senator Obama who must also be idiots in your book. Thankfully, you and your fellow name callers represent a distinct minority in this country.

Last time he brought her up he was telling us that she was a “typical white person” who was afraid of black people — the implication being, I think, that if we were very good we would vote for him and show everyone we weren’t racists anymore.
I’m not sure whether going to visit her is a calculated move or not; nobody knows but Obama. I hope for his sake it is not.
Oct 23, 2008 - 8:55 am 54. susan:Robert, the exact definition is useful idiots, I suppose you will acknowledge this brilliant definition by a person whose political views are close to yours: Vladimir Lenin
————–
Bruce C. Thornton, a professor of Classics at American University of Cal State Fresno wrote:
Lenin called them “useful idiots,” those people living in liberal democracies who by giving moral and material support to a totalitarian ideology in effect were braiding the rope that would hang them. Why people who enjoyed freedom and prosperity worked passionately to destroy both is a fascinating question, one still with us today. Now the useful idiots can be found in the chorus of appeasement, reflexive anti-Americanism, and sentimental idealism trying to inhibit the necessary responses to another freedom-hating ideology, radical Islam
——————-
The psychological pattern is known, it derives from a pathological sense of guilt mixed with stockholm syndrome. The media plays a good part in this since manipulation of truth is a basic factor too.
I am not surprised that half of USA is affected.
But I still think a large chunck of those useful idiots are only lazy people wanting government handouts without being bothered to work. Again, this is a human trait, albeit despicable.
You seem to see nothing wrong in it. Enjoy your socialism/communism and your sub-par president/messiah.

You are just jealous because Obama isn’t visiting your grandma. That is because you haven’t been nice to him at all, since the beginning of this Presidential campaign. So don’t be jealous and go visit your own grandma for a change.
Oct 23, 2008 - 9:42 am 57. Libsaremorons:That was a complete waste of my time. I could just go to any major news outlet to get this stuff.
“Sending the MSM Down the River….”
How can pjmedia use this as a slogan if they’re allowing waste of time stories like this??
Oct 23, 2008 - 9:46 am 58. brooks:Tony:
It helped a bit that Palin but her fam out there as a campaign piece though, didn’t it? Hypocrisy? Like Democrats are the only purveyors of cynical ploys out there.
Aren’t “family values” a big part of her personal appeal and platform? So it’s not pertinent to the campaign that we are asked to show ‘deference’ when the so-called abstinence “education” Palin pushes for the rest of us has obviously failed her own daughter? Right then, enjoy the Kool-Aid, my kooky compadre.
babar:
“The Secret Service should probably keep an eye on this comment thread. You people are not only heartless, but unhinged.”
Whew, tell me about it – when Rick Moran gets booed for showing some humanity, the crap has really hit the propeller! All the John Birchers here please raise your hand….
Oct 23, 2008 - 9:58 am 59. Boris:rocketeer,
Considr this. If God forbid, McCain’s mother was suddenly ill, what would you think of someone who said that McCain probably wished she would die for the sympathy vote? I would that person was scum.
I have conservative friends–and they are good friends. I enjoy arguing the issues with them. I couldn’t disagree with them more on many issues, but despite this, they are good people that I am privileged to know. My neighbor just put up a McCain Palin sign, but our daughter play together al the time. Sure politics is important, but you need to step back from it and recognize that even though we disagree, we can still be civil.
So maybe the scum thing is too much. But it pisses me off when partisanship goes that far. And yes, it pisses me off when liberals do it too.
Just think about it.
Oct 23, 2008 - 10:01 am 60. view from afar:cher Mr Hurley are you really as stupid as you pretend to be?oh by the way-I’m not name calling I am asking a genuine question neither Susan nor Tony called anyone any NAMES, they stated what they believe to be true, if those words bother you, then maybe you need to look at yourself and your beliefs instead of offering slams to cover your lack of a real ADULT type of response, you’re right there with my teens, and God knows a teen ager needs some one to take care of them (therefore you’ll vote for a man you promises to take care of you so you don’t have to do that yourself). Oct 23, 2008 - 10:02 am 61. Rhoda:Come on! This has nothing to do with poor old granny. He’s going back there to “clear up” issues over his birth certificate or create a fraudulant copy of one. He’s on the hot seat for never producing a valid one and less than 2 weeks before the election, things are heating up over his citizenship.
Oct 23, 2008 - 10:27 am 62. lionheart:Rick, because I like you, I want to say something nice…
Oct 23, 2008 - 10:33 am 63. Robert Hurley:Hmmm… still thinking…

Maybe I’ll come back later if I can think of anything…
Everytime I comeback to this blog I am amazed at the poverty of the reasoning, but it is reassuring because you are obviously not making many converts. In fact I think you are turning off more people than you are converting. When you visit this site, it does make you wonder what will happen when Obama wins. What do you do with all this hate?
Oct 23, 2008 - 10:48 am 64. Dee:Oh come on? Why doesn’this lovely women live with Obama. How come his wife is not going? How many times has been Obama been to see her in the last five years?
Pleeeeeeease! This is a pr stunt – their internals probably are showing a decline in white voters!!

“If God forbid, McCain’s mother was suddenly ill, what would you think of someone who said that McCain probably wished she would die for the sympathy vote?”
Your protege made fun of his incapability to type on a keyboard. Or being focused (clearly hinting that dementia has kicked in).
let’s not mention the mud that has been thrown at sarah palin. People from left-wing (journalists and celebrities) said that she was chosed because of the decision to keep an handicapped child. Or that the child was her daughter’s child. To any person that has an handicapped person in the family this is a deep insult.
You leftist set the bar low. Don’t cry now.
and whoa robert, you again
“Everytime I comeback to this blog I am amazed at the poverty of the reasoning”
so why you come back? I come back here because i find people to write intelligent points. Most of the times I skip the OP and read the comments directly.
“it is reassuring because you are obviously not making many converts”
and how many “converts” are in the making at the daily kos?
“In fact I think you are turning off more people than you are converting.”
how many people do you think were turned off from the palin mud throwing? I guess a lot since it shifted the percentages visibly.
“When you visit this site, it does make you wonder what will happen when Obama wins.”
he will shut down all opposition including this site.
Oct 23, 2008 - 11:24 am 66. OsamaLinBiden:Great article. It’s good to see a conservative drop the spin for a change. It really gets tiresome to read things on this site with so much hate and prejudice. I’m not saying y’all are racist (tho I’m sure some are), but you don’t seem to be able to listen to any opposing views. Perhaps you need to change your perspective for a bit. Go visit Obama’s website, read his issue statement, watch some videos. 54% of the country now says that they will vote for him. Don’t you want to understand why? What does everybody else see in this man that you don’t?
That’s why I came to this site, to see what the other side was saying. I don’t have to, because my candidate is going to win. But your’s isn’t, so maybe you should take a better look at who your next president is going to be.
Oct 23, 2008 - 11:24 am 67. RusrtyG:64. Robert Hurley
Was your post satire?
Let’s see. Maybe I’ll start a blog and call it the HourlyKos complete with a HourlyKos convention where the GOP can fire up the base. Maybe buy the NY Times and try to subvert Barry’s every move. Maybe some art work at street fairs showing a beheaded Obama. You have to be joking. Right?
Oct 23, 2008 - 11:29 am 68. Jeff:64. Robert Hurley,
I do agree with you that this is one of the most hateful forum that I have also had the misfortune of discovering but now that we are here, just take these hateful, so-called Christian people with a grain of salt. I find teasing them on this forum at times to be the best medicine of the day as in my #57 post to the likes of Ed Wallis.
They live in an alternate reality from you and me. Fear and hate seems to be the order of the day, which happens to be everyday, for these supposedly religious people. Their mentalities have not transcended beyond color, creed, religion, and cultural backgrounds of this world. They view the world as Sarah Palin views the world, not through a panoramic view but more likely through a peephole. These are the hardest people to change and only they can change themselves. My only worries is that they will carry these mentalities on down to their kids. Now that is the truly frightening part.
Oct 23, 2008 - 11:38 am 69. Patterson:Rick Moran = Left Wing Media at its finest!!!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
Obama announced almost a week ago that he was going to visit his deathly ill grandmother in Hawaii because he didn’t want to make the same mistake with her as he did his mother when she died.
Ok, ok let’s step back and take a look at this. If you REALLY cared about your grandmother why in the hell would you announce a week out that you were going to visit your DEATHLY ill grandmother in Hawaii a week later? If he REALLY cared, I mean REALLY GENUINELY CARED, he would not have waited a week and on top of that announce it to everyone and make a huge media spectacle over it for a week in preparation to going. This is a sickening PR attempt and anyone who falls for this is….I am at a loss for words….imbecile and absolute idiot don’t even begin to encompass the words I’m trying to express here.
Oct 23, 2008 - 11:41 am 70. Big Ben:How many times has Barack visited his grandmother in the last 20 years; how mant times has he seen her since he was elected Senator? On how many occasions has Michelle Obama visited with grandma since her marriage to Barack?
Has Barack been to Hawaii as often as he visted his dad’s relatives in Kenya?
How often did Barack call gramms in Hawaii over the last few years?
Maybe someone from the Campaign can supply these details.
What I find striking is that one can read all of these favorable stories about Barack, withnary a mention of any contemporaneous interaction with his grandmother since he launched his political career.
Oct 23, 2008 - 11:44 am 71. Robert Hurley:RusrtyG and View from Afar
I am not sure if anyone could make sense of what you wrote.

oh and jeff, I am proud to see the world as sarah palin, where every child is precious, even down-syndrome ones and not waste material because you’re “punished with a baby”
Oct 23, 2008 - 12:03 pm 73. Someone75:momof3:
Your foolish posts once again reflect your extremely poor judgment. I feel sorry for your kids, growing up with a mother like you. How dare you attack someone making a sacrifice to visit an ill grandmother? Where are your small town values? There’s a word for people like you, but I won’t mention it here.

Oct 23, 2008 - 12:14 pm 75. susan:Talking about elders, I would like to know more about the other obama grannie, the one that claims obama is born in kenya and she was present to the birth… Don’t expect to see an interview with this other obama grannie anytime soon
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Blogs/Message.aspx/3074
According to Obama’s Kenyan (paternal) grandmother, as well as his half-brother and half-sister, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Kenya, not in Hawaii as the Democratic candidate for president claims. His grandmother bragged that her grandson is about to be President of the United States and is so proud because she was present DURING HIS BIRTH IN KENYA, in the delivery room.
One explanation is that Obama’s mother Ann Dunham, flew to Kenya in 1961 with Obama’s father to meet his family. According to some news reports, Ann Dunham, was not accepted well by her husband’s family because she was white:
“Obama’s family did not take to Stanley Ann Dunham Obama very well, because she was white, according to Sarah Obama. Shortly after she arrived in Kenya Stanley Ann decided to return to Hawaii because she later said, she did not like how Muslim men treated their wives in Kenya. However, because she was near term the airline would not let her fly until after the birth of her baby. Obama’s grandmother said the baby—Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.—was born in Kenya and that shortly after he was born, Stanley Ann returned to Hawaii.”
However, by the time she wanted to leave Kenya, it was during the late stages of her pregnancy. She was not able to board a plane because the airlines wouldn’t allow women so close to birth to fly.

I haven’t paid much attention to granny’s visit by O. But, she is back home and doing fine it has been reported by MSM. What is all this death bed talk? Could it be a play to get the B.C.? Making a play for the senior votes? Something doesn’t add up here. Stayed tuned… the internet blogs are forcing MSM to listen to the ground swell.
Oct 23, 2008 - 1:24 pm 78. zanne:And Boris..sometimes we have to listen to other people and their opinions to form our own. Insults only come across as having a weak position. See how nice you can tell someone they are wrong.

Why does the scene from Gladiator come to mind. You know when Commodus murders his father, suffocates him with a pillow to become Emperor.
I have no doubt if such would guarantee Obama the presidency, life would follow art.

After all the hate that has been thrown at the Bush adm. and the right from the dems the last 8 years via every lefty website (Kos reference) and every news outlet (NY Times reference)and street carnivals with artwork of a dead or decapitated President Bush, it borders on hilarious for you to project that the right is hate filled.

Because everyone is human. You people are crazy. Have no logical sense that the Good Lord has given. If he worked at Sams Club and his Grandmother was ill everyone he worked with would know because the supervisor would inform co-worker of his absense. Though he’s in the public eye every second of the day as all famous people are or people in television, etc. These are things that will be reported. You think he said hey..”tell everyone i’m going to see Grandma, she’s sick”. Good grief…
Oct 23, 2008 - 2:11 pm 87. Vasio:Who cares what his birth certificate says? Oct 23, 2008 - 2:47 pm 94. USPatriot:Rick Moran; what have you been smoking?
I don’t believe for one minute Obama will fly 5000 miles to Hawaii just to visit his ailing granny out of the wonderfulness of his heart. I believe Obama’s Granny has been out of the hospital for one week already. Obama had to make the big announcement that he was going to rush to his Grandma’a bedside.Of course Harry Smith on the CBS Morning show had to breathlessly ask Obama about that visit to Granny. Last I checked, three days have elapsed since Obama made that statement and he was still on the campaign trail. Some emergency; some urgency, huh?
There is more to this move than meets the eye. Obama is as cold and phoney as the day is long. He does not make one move or one decision without taking into account political expediency and advantage for himself. Obama is not burning two days off the campaign trail at this time just to see Grandma. No way!
Oct 23, 2008 - 2:51 pm 95. Lisa:Vasio..
The requirement for President is to be a natural born citizen. Were Obama, the child of an American and a non-American, born outside of the U.S., not only would it show he LIED to us (yet again) but also question whether he qualifies as a natural born citizen.
Oct 23, 2008 - 3:36 pm 96. Fantom:“Robert Hurley:

Oct 23, 2008 - 4:46 pm 99. ed:Wow. The vitriol is thick here. The nasty comments show why conservatism has run its course for now. America can no longer be cowed by yelling terrorism and “liberal” is no longer considered a perjorative by the majority of Americans (see the upgrade to “socialist” in right wing screwballery). The unfortunate few are left with nothing but bitterness and hate while the rest of the country moves on.
Conservatism promised smaller government. Didn’t happen. Conservatism promised a more moral country. Didn’t happen. Conservatism promised fiscal sanity in government. Didn’t happen. Conservatism promised deregulating commerce would lead to more financial success and lower costs for all. Didn’t happen. Conservatism promised term limits. Didn’t happen. Conservatism promised evangelicals greater participation in government decision making. Didn’t happen. No need to go on, but one could easily do so for a long time on this theme.
And you wonder why someone offering even a vague hope for change after 30 years of conservatism will win the Presidency? Grow up, admit the gigantic pile of crap conservatism has left on America’s front porch and get to work regaining America’s trust. The adults among you will be needed later. And Rick Moran is one of the adults.
Oct 23, 2008 - 4:52 pm 100. notutopia:I am curious at your assumption that he has a good soul. When this campaign strategy and all it’s splendid tactical maneuvers have taught us more than ever before in history, that the depths of the “soul” of this man who is running for POTUS, is unknown, still. There are two weeks left in this election. I have two memoirs which I’ve read and from which to make a character judgement on. I am still in wonderment if his choice of example over the issue of drawing parallels to racial bias and fear is personal or metaphorical. Either way, this innocent Grandma has been included in his parallel. We’re still waiting to see her teachings in his actions. Words have changed and so has his platform to morph into what he thinks and his handlers think others want to hear and see.
Oct 23, 2008 - 4:57 pm 101. Fantom:My personal roots come from a multinational, multicultural and bi-racial background. That does not affect my ability toward empathy and compassion to my family members who are ill. You are mixing the two and making an assumption for us. Unfortunately there has to be an answering of the common dimension of trust. Trust in that this is not just one more campaign decision that is “the right thing to do” at this time. I still am waiting for the real person to show himself. Behavior speaks louder than words and is ever so more lasting. This country is worth so much more than an assumption of Trust or a good soul in the hands of bad behavior!
December 24, 1952 to November 13, 1986
If, at the time of your birth, both your parents were U.S. citizens and at least one had a prior residence in the United States, you automatically acquired U.S. citizenship with no conditions for retaining it.
If only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of your birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for at least ten years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 16. There are no conditions placed on retaining this type of citizenship. If your one U.S. citizen parent is your father and you were born outside of marriage, the same rules apply if your father legally legitimated you before your 21st birthday and you were unmarried at the time. If legitimation occurred after November 14, 1986, your father must have established paternity prior to your 18th birthday, either by acknowledgment or by court order, and must have stated in writing that he would support you financially until your 18th birthday.
So unless Obama can show a valid Birth certificate in the USA… sorry charlie, a certificate of live birth will not cut it.
Then he is not a US citizen. Now maybe this is the real reason he is in Hawaii .
Oct 23, 2008 - 5:07 pm 102. thegr8_1:Michael Savage had Mr Berg on his show for two hours tonight he said he would have an MP3 file on his website or grab a podcast. All about the birth certificate issue. All I say is listen to it and make your own judgement. Nobody elsechas interviewed this guy. He is a liberal Democrat former Deputy Atty General from PA. His interest is having the constitution upheld. Why isn’t his family with him my family would be with me in the same situation. Why did he wait two days before going? As a human I hope he gets closure and satisfaction that he is there if his grandma passes on. I am for McCain but all I want is a fair election where the eligibility of the candidates is vetted properly.
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:36 pm 103. thegr8_1:One more thing we all know what happened to Jerome Corsi when he last went to Kenya a few weeks ago. Detained by 30 armed from the military. Why?
Oct 23, 2008 - 6:41 pm 104. Habib:Hmmm.
Given Berg’s lawsuit. The fake birth certificate and the general resistance of Obama to turning over any records on himself (including health records). Adding to that, the fact that Obama’s kids haven’t had a chance (or been allowed), to meet their grandmother.
Can’t tell you how sick granny is, but all told I would lean more toward Obama getting things lined re. the BC lawsuit that’s brewing in PA. Sen. Obama hasn’t done much but trash his Granny, and just about everyone else it becomes inconvenient to be associated with…politically that is.
Wish I could be more charitable, but Sen. Obama has proved himself to be a real politician in this campaign, and I’m not being complimentary.
Oct 23, 2008 - 8:48 pm 105. twolaneflash:Make me sick. My son had 3 of his grandparents pass away while he was on military duty. He was not released to attend any of the funerals, despite being less than a 4 hour drive from home. Suck it up, Obama. Ready for duty, or what?
Oct 23, 2008 - 10:24 pm 106. twolaneflash:Your contention that Obama spent his formative years with his grandmother is not correct. He did not live with her until he was ten years old. Because of my citizenship that child is an American and French. It’s call “Dual Citizenship”. Gosh what kind of schools did you people attend? Where are you getting your information. “Dual Citizenship” doesn’t bar you from anything this great American nation has to offer.
So that must mean I have “Dual Citizenship”.. Because I do.
Oct 24, 2008 - 7:52 am 120. susan:i am not among people who I despise, there is a minority of idiots like yourself that should remove themselves from the gene pool, therefore my time spent here derives from the logic of reading intelligent pieces written by posters.
You type very quick? that must be the reason why there is not much substance or logic. All style and no substance like your hero.
I am at home now because I am part of that small group of people that are self employed and work on projects, my projects could start tomorrow or next year, in between I rely on my past earnings. You are at home all the time, every day because in one way or another you are entitled to some free goverment handout. Or the other explanation, since you know pretty much nothing about economics, hystory or the principles of basic logic that you are not over 14. That is also a possibility.
Oct 24, 2008 - 8:19 am 121. Anonymous:I’m sorry, but you guys education is skewed. You must be a ‘citizen’. I’m sorry you are confused. Who in here has taken Government 100? So what’s the requirement for senator? or governor? or mayor?
Oct 24, 2008 - 8:47 am 122. TeamPlayer:All of you were justifiable in your criticism of the Mother/Daughter child non-msm stupidity.
Have you no perspective? This thread is the same cynical, tin-foil hat b.s. that is killing the country. In the last week, the postings have really started to become disturbing and have moved further and further from any real content.

For this dysfunctions of the brain there is no cure, the cancer of leftism is slow but will finally erode you.

I am pretty sure that the guy sleeping in the bed next to yours thinks he’s Napoleon, then there is another thinking to be Julius Caesar and so on.
It’s pretty typical for patient to think they are doctors themselves.
Take your meds and try to stay quiet, they might remove your right to surf the net.

Wow – just chill out. There’s a big difference between pointing out that that Joe the Plumber misrepresents the earnings of a business he hasn’t even bought, and saying Obama is going to visit his gravely ill grandmother just for publicity.
I really don’t think you’re actually that cold-hearted. I think you’ve backed yourself into a political corner and it’s making you say irrational, hateful things that you don’t really mean. Seriously – the guy has a sick grandmother and you’re calling him a phony. He was raised by his grandparents – they’re special to him.
I think you should apologize for your comments. It’s one thing for you and I to disagree on politics. It’s quite another to show such callous disregard for a family’s health struggles.
Ed Wallis:
Yeah, idiots like me from “pretend” America could never compete with the likes of you. Your unassailable logic is a refreshing breath of fresh air amidst all the “facts” that we’re bombarded with from the stinking media.
Maybe if you weren’t so high and mighty, you could open your mind to a world outside of PJMedia. Personally, I like to hear both sides – without dismissing either out of hand. Your intolerance for opposing though reveals a lot about you.
All I ever wanted was some “genuine discourse” as you said. What did I get? Ad hominem attacks and ridicule. People like you read my posts and decided that my views opposed yours and, ipso facto, I was a troll, a socialist, a dupe, and a “left wing nut-job.”
Take a look at your own “discourse.” And while you’re at it, you may want to remind yourself (or discover) what the word means. Because it ain’t what *you’re* doing.
Oct 24, 2008 - 12:51 pm 126. Rasputin:This thread is awesome. All of these pretend “values” voters (who are about to be relegated to the dustbin of history) snarking on their hated enemy because he is acting on his own human values. Good riddance, and enjoy the birth certificate issue — yeah, that’ll get Johnny Nepotism into the White House, for sure! I thought the BusHitler left was about as paranoid and nutty as it got — you people are about to take their crown.

LOL, you are pathetic.
They are so special that he wrote black on white that his grandma is the “typical white person with typical white prejudices”
And I am the one in a political corner?
LOL
I bet his grandma was jumping with joy when she read that description of her written by a man that SHE PAID EVERYTHING FOR.
The seriously ill grandma broke her hip 2 weeks ago, if he’s sooooo dedicated, why he didn’t hurry up there 2 weeks ago?
That would have made more sense.
So not only going there now is a plain PR stunt, like his picture where he was filling sands bag for 20 seconds, enough for the photo op, but he’s going there to try to produce another fake birth certificate.
And I should apologise? Get lost, to me you count less than the mosquito that’s flying outside my window.
What do you think we are? friends? peers?
You should apologise to all of us because reading your posts is an insult to intelligence.
Oct 24, 2008 - 1:42 pm 128. Lucy Dashwood:Very genuine. He went back to see the typical white person on her death bed but Michelle and the kids didn’t go. (It wouldn’t be good for Michelle’s children.) Nothing Barry does is genuine, sincere or without planning. His life is as orchestrated as his acceptance speech and Grecian columns can be left to over-heated imaginations when he can’t have them in actuality.

I’m curious as to how many states will still have him on the ticket come November 04. If he cannot produce a valid Birth certificate that passes the experts inspection and has a flawless chain of custody that number will be zero.
I am also curious if the Obamabots will be able to rally around Joe.
Biden, not the Plumber.

The last time he went to Hawaii his “certificate of live birth” appeared a few days later… what will surface this time? Maybe more (fake) proof he was born in Hawaii?
I bet “Toot” knows where Obama was born. Anyone asking her? Some people like to spill the beans when they are facing eternity.
I pray she lives!

He made a conscious choice when his mother was at the end of her life, when “we are family” wasn’t on the world media. Now he is using that same choice for sympathy votes.
Despicable as Biden using the truck driver who drank his lunch and killed his family for the boo hoo vote Problem is, police records report that his wife was driving with 3 kids and a Xmas tree, never saw the driver who was sober. This from the daily train home bar car.

Gov. Linda introduced Sarah Palin at the RNC. The Dem majority hate her, give her 0 credit, even though she pulled this state out of the big toilet. There is not enough room or time to display her accomplishments.
******
Linda Lingle has been Governor of Hawaii since December 2, 2002. She was sworn in for a second term on December 4, 2006.
Lingle holds a number of distinctions: first Republican elected governor of Hawaii since the departure of William F. Quinn in 1962, first county mayor elected governor of Hawaii, first female governor of Hawaii, first Jewish governor of Hawaii; the second Jewish woman elected governor of a U.S. state; and the first governor of Hawaii not to have any children. Under Governor Lingle’s leadership, her Administration has expanded and diversified the economy while prudently managing the state’s budget. As a result, Hawai‘i’s economy is the strongest it has been in more than a decade and continues to grow faster than the national average, while also maintaining one of the country’s lowest unemployment rates. As governor, Lingle has created a record surplus of $730 million, coming from the budget’s previous deficit of $250 million. Many also credit her for leaving Hawaii with a very low unemployment rate. Like all governors, Lingle has signed a number of bills into law, including the Three Strikes Law and Sex Offender Registry Website Law.

Dysfunctional families normally do not have lifetime pictures, just early yrs…what bother’s me about his psyche is that he portrays, fantasizes and sells himself as a normal average middle America Joe and he is anything but..he is bought and paid for. Sold out for corruption.
I understand that Corsi is here now following up on what he learned in Kenya and getting more proof that Frank Marshall Davis is Obama’s real father.

“Brain Liberals” ( A 3 part summation )
1. Most Conservatives ‘feel’ as a result how they behave.
2. Liberals generally behave as a result of how they ‘feel’.
3. Feelings are typically not generated by, “serious thought.” And that is why so many follow Obama because they feel he is going to change things, but don’t have a clue as to how lame his economic plans really are.
Therefore, the term, “Brain Liberals,” is very much a contradiction of reality!
Oct 24, 2008 - 9:24 pm 139. jtron:Wow….. You people are so very very sad. If you love them conservative values so much…go die for oil(as the so intelligent McCain referenced), ignore science(to hell with our grandchildren), and of course watch Faux News (which shows more nudity and smut than any other “news” network). Why not burn a witch or two. Don’t worry children, President Obama wont take away your nascar, and though he is a large proponent of secondary education he wont make you go to them nasty communist bastions of education….Go ahead and sit this one out. What is even worse Kiana, Tutu was supposely on her death bed and BO spent 3 days talking about how he had to see her and after 3 days he flew over there. If someone in my family was on their death bed it wouldn’t take me 3 days to see them.. So the BO Media had a lot to say to sympathize BO. I would assume his family is not even close to Tutu. She is on her death bed and the wife and children do not join BO. Oh, I forgot, MO does not like white people.
Oct 25, 2008 - 9:38 am 147. Vasio:Susan you say: osama bin laden the birth certificate obama produced is fake. Mccain is born by 2 american parents and has a valid birth certificate.
I know you leftist do not bother with the truth but your assumption is quite gross.
Susan, it seems you are spreading you stupidity in all conversations. You tell me how do you know Obama’s birth certificate is fake?
I really think you have some really deep strong prejudice. Some can be worked in therapy.
PAY ATTENTION EVERYONE:
Only native-born U.S. citizens (or those born abroad, but only to parents who were citizens of the U.S.) may be president of the United States, though from time to time that requirement is called into question, most recently after Arnold Schwarzenegger, born in Austria, was elected governor of California, in 2003. The Constitution originally provided a small loophole to this provision: One needn’t have been born in the United States but had to be a citizen at the time the Constitution was adopted. But, since that occurred in 1789, that ship has sailed.
Further, one must live in the United States for at least 14 years to be president, in addition to being a citizen.
Therefore Hawaii is a state even though it’s an island. Which makes Obama a U.S. citizen. He has lived in America for over 14 years. So I’m sorry he does meet the requirement. But does that Terminator guy?
Oct 25, 2008 - 11:34 am 148. Vasio:Lastly, here goes nothing, but this wont help SUSAN at all!!!!
I’ve heard there’s been some controversy over both candidates’ birthplace. Barack Obama has been accused of not having a valid birth certificate, with the suggestion that he’s not a U.S. citizen. However, the birth certificate has been examined by several experts and been determined to qualify as valid. Here’s the respected Annenberg Public Policy Institute’s report on what it found when it looked at the document. Annenberg’s FactCheck.org is one of the most reliable sources for sorting out campaign allegations. It concluded that Obama is a natural-born citizen, born in Honolulu.
John McCain was born in Panama. There have been questions raised as to whether he was born in the then-U.S.-controlled Panama Canal Zone, as he says, and whether that could change his “natural-born” status. However, on April 30 the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution declaring McCain to be a “natural-born citizen.” Given that there is some ambiguity in the Constitution as to what a “natural-born citizen” is, the Senate resolution would seem to trump any other arguments.
So there you have it, the birthplace issue is null and void and nobody here is a records expert and nobody here can tell a fake from the real because you were not trained to do so.
So Susan, I like you and I’m here to help. You should look into McCain. Because I don’t know if the Panama he’s from is American controlled, but it doesn’t matter because he served in the military.
So both candidates are citizens, they meet the age requirements. There is no limit in age 35 years and up. Even a 100 year old can run for president. They both have been senators. They qualify.
So make your choice and SUSAN. You already told me who you are not voting for
.
And I still love ya like a sister.

Oct 26, 2008 - 1:02 am 152. Vasio:Vivo, it’s Susan’s fault. So be easy on her.
Davod, I’m sorry but if Factcheck.org is discredited then McCain citizenship is false as well. How can they determine McCains’ certificate and true and that is taking in as valid, but Obama’s is still a fake?
Let’s put the birth certificate thing to rest.
the Senate resolution would seem to trump any other arguments. So the senate has made their resolution. So there’s no argument. Sorry, Susan…Still love ya like a sister.

what part of this you fail to understand. maybe you can call and adult that can read, understand and explain to you what it means.
I suppose it will take days, even weeks, because underachievers like yourself are not used to reasoning, but still.
John Mccain produced a valid birth certificated, what can we say about the man you wet your pants on?
And why would you dismiss his paternal grandmother? why you think that the whole obama family is lying?
Maybe you know that obama is a liar and so his whole family.
If probably increase your sexual attraction to him since it’s known that men who lie are more attractive to young teenagers like yourself
