Palin Commits Political Suicide

Thanks for the show, Sarah. (Also read Richard Fernandez: Northern Surprise)

There have been a number of seminal queries which our elders used to define game-changing moments in America’s cultural evolution. Where were you when JFK was shot? Where were you when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon? For me, although it will likely wind up as a Trivial Pursuit bonus round question, one of the treasured turning points may well be: Where were you when Sarah Palin decided to commit political suicide?

The odd thing is that I was up in the mountains, forcing myself into a period of decompression from the political theater. I likely wouldn’t have even known that Governor Palin had decided to resign her office had I not been taking time out from fruitless bass fishing to moderate the chat for Ed Morrissey’s daily show.

The first questions arose in a predictable pattern, since initial reports were grossly lacking in detail. The most horrific scenarios dominated: Was she sick? Was there some tragedy unfolding with her family? The second, and more likely scenario in my view, was that a clever reporter had finally unearthed a bit of discomfiture and asked the governor for comment. In that case, the pending resignation would prove to be a preemptive move to circle the wagons and prepare for the onslaught to come. When an elected official spends so much time and money fighting allegations of ethical misconduct, it should hardly come as a surprise if one of them stuck to the wall.

The one thing all of our chatizens seemed to agree upon was that it couldn’t possibly have been a calculated move to advance her hopes for a presidential bid. Governor Palin had shortcomings in abundance, but she was most certainly not daft or politically inept. No sane person in her position could possibly think that abandoning their first serious executive term in midstream would serve as a trump card on the national political stage. The most inept neophyte could not imagine that bowing to media and opposition pressure, exiting stage right, would set them up for a seat at the big table. Could she conceivably think that a few years as mayor of Wasilla and half a term in the governor’s mansion would be viewed as a sufficient resume to be president?

The more liberal viewers in our audience had an uncomfortable pause there. The current president’s resume was … well. Best not to dwell on that.

And yet the news unfolded like the dreams of a horse-track addict who still believes that the long shot will come through. I read Sammy “the Lid” Benoit’s accounting of her statement on that momentous day and it seemed that she really believed that this was the path to splendor. She had grown tired of the media’s relentless hounding, accusations of ethical lapses, and demands for repayment of perniciously squandered taxpayer funds. The pressure was too great. It was distracting her from her mission and the good citizens of Alaska deserved a full-time executive.

Well I think you’re wrong and I’m betting I’m not the only one. Of course I don’t know the mind of Governor Palin but my instinct is that she is not going to give up on America. Many have but I don’t get that from her. I get a calculated move to boost her image, to show herself to middle America, to voice her conservative values and let the people know she is not the monster the print media and the tv talking airheads are trying to make her out to be.She can’t do that from Alaska. Yes she needs some polish, and more studying on various subjects but she has a large and strong base of support already. Do you really think that she’s going to just toss all those people under the bus? So quit being such a downer, have a beer and a hot dog for the 4th, show your colors and prepare for the day that we take our country back from that bum Obambi and his slavish, drooling, boot heel licking acolytes.

I suspect that Sarah Palin has a very legitimate reason for her resignation. Alaska’s ethic laws apparently are utterly insane. They are a quintessential example of legislators passing laws without foreseeing the unintentional consequences. Palin is reportedly still $400,000 in debt because of her enemies relentless attacks. She is not a vastly wealthy woman. On top of that, Palin is spending too much time defending herself.

It is my understanding, and I’m admittedly a bit confused on this point, that Alaska allows any citizen the right to charge the governor with ethic violations at a drop of the hat. This individual spends virtually no money and the process is quite simple—and they know the results will be devastating. Basically, it’s a freebie.

“This just reinforces her image as bizarre and somewhat unstable.” (Re-posted from Roger’s 4th of July thread).

The above quotatation is the early hymn page for liberals to use further in this affair: “This just reinforces her image as bizarre and somewhat unstable.” (Martin Frost/Politico/The Arena/Palin’s slow-day-shocker)

Unfortunately (and admitedly being a rather moderate admirer of hers), Frost’s call will be endlessly echoed by the liberal media establishment, to great effect, as we’ll all see, and bellow is the recent and very convincing precedent of this strategy:

Remember last September’s McCain/Obama debate/ debacle, when McCain took the fateful decision to fly to Washington, then returned, instead of pressing Obama?
Well, the PR costs were immense, since immediatedly media began to paint him with a huge, sympathetic brush: “Well, he’s a great guy, but he’s gotten this ’shoot from the hip’ thing…. he’s an impulsive… often times he’s doing things before thinking… after all he’s a fighter pilot which is great, but this is not what we really need in WH, etc. etc… while Obama is a deliberate person, analytical, cautiously examines situations”.

“This just reinforces her image as bizarre and somewhat unstable…”
We’ll hear ad nuseam variations of this observation from now on – and unfortunately, this incoming choir of appreciations will have a destructive effect upon her future career, if there is any left for her.

Jul 4, 2009 - 9:49 am 4. sheesh:

Good riddance. She was a charade to begin with, relegated to blaming everybody but herself for her lack of genuine relevance. She was never going to rise beyond sideshow dancer, and she knows it. She had no chance of mounting a winning campaign as a Republican. That left her three choices: fade away never to be heard from again; live the life of a media celebrity; lead a third-party movement of angry bitter conservatives doomed to failure and existing only to talk back rather than step up.

Take your pick.

Oh, wait, choice #4 – get indicted.

Ensign/Sanford/Palin 2012 . . . Romney’s next to fall. But fear not, there’s always . . . President Huckabee.

“Could she conceivably think that a few years as mayor of Wasilla and half a term in the governor’s mansion would be viewed as a sufficient resume to be president?”

Well of course not. However, by resigning now it gives her time to gain that experience so critical to the presidency: Community organizing.

Jul 4, 2009 - 9:59 am 6. Dianna:

I think you are wrong.

With this move, she says she is looking out for her State’s best interests, and I believe her.

She has had on average a lawsuit filed every 3 weeks against her, all of which have failed.

Second, the simple fact that the press FEARS her, constantly slimes her, that liberals detest her, makes her quite simply look BETTER to republicans and conservatives.

You see out here in the real world, we are more than just a little sick and tired of the Media telling us what and whom to believe it. The media is so far into Barak’s back pocket its sickening, and its blatantly obvious.

Sarah is outside your control, and she is walkin the same walk most Americans have to. Not only that, she is smarter than most, politically astute, and is going to be the next President of the United States. Why you ask? Because she unites her base in a way on other public figure has the ability to. She is the same rising star OholyO was in 2004, and liberals/Democrats can easily see that. Thats the reason they are out to destroy her if they can.

I sincerely doubt your ability to do so.

Palin 2012

Jul 4, 2009 - 10:08 am 7. David Thomson:

Washington insiders laugh at $500,000 in legal bills. In their little world, this is petty cash. Sarah Palin simply cannot afford this luxury. I am getting the distinct impression that the effects of this financial abuse has been underestimated by the more “elite” Republicans. Even a number of conservative columnists basically blipped the matter off their radar screen.

>6. Dianna: she is looking out for her State’s best interest

she is not. She just could not bare a fight.

It is a war and war requires strong male character.

Sarah is brilliant but not fit to fight a war. It is a real war with possible assasinations, death treats to your children and even worth things

It is no way a job for a woman like Sarah. It is good that she finally got it.

God Bless her.We should never allow our women to be wasted in the war like fights in politics

Jul 4, 2009 - 10:18 am 10. BackwardsBoy:

I certainly can’t say I blame her for wanting a respite from the vile and baseless attacks that seemed to come on a daily basis (inluding this piece). Through her, we’ve been exposed to the full venom of the national press who view average Americans through their highly distorted lens of supposed superiority. The low level of discourse displayed throughout this last election showed us how difficult it is for someone who holds conservative values to get their message out. The press has finally shown us the truly disgusting side of journalism, the only side we now see in politics. Issues are unimportant and valid ideas are ignored in favor of uncovering any little tidbit of information that can be used to denigrate the unfavored candidate. Witness the extreme scrutiny of Palin’s personal and family life compared to the lack of even the slightest interest in Obama’s radical past.
When the dust settles, the real loser will be the mainstream media, whose credibilty has diminished to the point of irrelevance. As formerly respected newspapers of note continue their death spiral, they blame everyone but themselves for their demise.
I say good riddance.

Thank God, this rank novice has been banished and the country/GOP can bask in the knowledge that skilled and experienced professionals like Barney Frank, Chis Dodd, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi,Harry Reid, Dick Durbin, Henry Waxman, and Charlie Rangle are minding our interests.

Jul 4, 2009 - 10:36 am 12. eman:

Here is my take on it. I copied a portion of a post of mine from another site and offer it here.
“There are other potential GOP candidates who are Governors, why haven’t they been attacked as Palin has been?

They are not threats to the One. If Palin had been left alone, as normal post-election habit would have it, then Palin would have no reason to resign now and could truly be called a quitter today. But, her case is unique. She hasn’t been treated normally. That is why her response is not normal. That is why she is compelled to leave office. Normally, this would not be done. After you lose a national race you return to a local office, lick your wounds, do your job, and wait for the cycle to return.

That was made impossible for her. She saw that. Her enemies wanted her to stay in office, to be worn down to nothing by the time the cycle began again. She jumped.
Now they are fashioning a response. She has the board now. “

Future commenters: People don’t do such things!

Folks, have you noticed anything? This isn’t politics as usual. That’s the point. How much would you give for Pelosi or Biden to conclude that they should step aside because their posts are now all about power rather than leadership? How much would you laud a move like that?

Sarah could play the power game and get nowhere, or she can rewrite the rules. The liberal sewer-rats, who wanted her gone, will have leisure to beware what they wanted. No more Death By A Thousand Lawsuits. She’s now unleashed to draw crowds of 20,000 in the lower 48 to Biden’s 100. She’s now free to provide a ringing contrast to Michelle’s Hate America tour or 2008. Watch how a true leader and a true American does it.

You just don’t get it – its ok to not have power. You don’t have to cling to office as long as possible…its ok to just be a human being who puts things in proper perspective. Our nation has been ruined by career politicians…people like Sarah Palin will rescue us from this.

Jul 4, 2009 - 10:44 am 15. J. Robertson:

I believe her family life is more important to her than continuing public life. It will certainly be more rewarding, more fulfilling.
The “blood-sport” she speaks of is not what a person of normal mindset wishes to engage in. It truly is disheartening, vulgar, ugly and fit for only those whose mindset is for power and control only.
I don’t think that is Sarah Palin.

And it is certainly our loss as Americans.

” Given the fact that the media will peer into each and every nook and cranny of your life, a term in the White House might not be your best bet if you choose to cut and run under the pressure of that scrutiny.”

What a crock. The public has been trying to determine if our current Pretender to the presidency is actually a United States citizen, much less a proper candidate, for over two years, only to be stonewalled and ridiculed by the media who are solidly protective of his communist-inspired campaign of misinformation, while with the other side of their mouths condemning all of the Palins for daring to exist. We are treated to endless media worship of Michelle Obama’s tasteless, juvenile wardrobe choices as if they actually were anything — anything! — but a middle-finger in the eye of civilized diplomatic attire. You and writers like yourself are contributing to the refeudalization of Americans, where only elites with tons of foreign and revolutionary dollars behind the scenes are able to run for office. We need to clean house in the next election, or we will all soon be persecuted dhimmis.

I agree with Arhooley and Mark noonan. Palin is not a self serving power seeker like the other republicans, that’s why many hate her. Is it too much to ask that she just finish a single term without resigning for no real reason?

I mean let’s be serious. If there is a problem with Alaska ethics laws, then fix it. SHE WAS THE GOVERNOR. If it’s the media that’s the problem. DEAL WITH IT. She hasn’t had to face anything close to what Clinton or Bush Jr. went through.

There is no coherent message to be gleaned from her resignation.

McCain’s running mate lays into Russia
permalinke-mail story to a friendprint version

Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has wasted no time in casting a cloud over Russia. In her keynote speech to the party convention in Minnesota, the Alaskan Governor accused Moscow of using energy as a weapon in its disagreements with the West.
Yahoo StumbleUpon Google Live Technorati
Scoop del.icio.us Digg Sphinn Furl Reddit

“With Russia wanting to control a vital pipeline in the Caucasus, and to divide and intimidate our European allies by using energy as a weapon, we cannot leave ourselves at the mercy of foreign suppliers,” Palin told supporters in St Paul.

The speech was crucial to the relatively unknown Republican, and her way of finally introducing herself to U.S. voters.

The pro-life, social conservative, received a thunderous reception from convention goers. But out on the streets, voters were quick to reject her credibility and social conservative views.

Thousands of opponents of the Republicans took their message to the streets this week. Repeated clashes between police and demonstrators led to hundreds of arrests, which critics say were unjustified.

Showing solidarity, activists set up a 24-hour vigil outside the jailhouse where civilians, journalists and medical personal were kept behind bars.

I’m pretty sure that she’s just going to go back to Wasilla and try to disappear. The ridicule of her Down’s Syndrome child and the insults aimed at her daughters were so over the top that anyone would have put their family first. Does anyone think that any liberal’s children will be treated this way? It’s just a good way to get rid of Republicans who might run for office and win. Wait til you see what happens if Bobby Jindal runs for President in 2012.

Jul 4, 2009 - 11:15 am 27. Sammy Benoit:

If she plans to run in 2012 Palin is going to have problems because yesterday Palin committed “voticide.” I believe that one day she will rue the day she gave up her day job.

Jul 4, 2009 - 11:20 am 28. Jacobite:

I’m sure Sarah will be okay and live a good life one way or another (probably not in politics).
My concern is with the next 500 smart, competent people that are contacted by the GOP to run for office or accept a nomination to some office. Like the attempted and sometimes successful election thefts that the Left is increasingly attempting, the point isn’t winning in any particular case, but the experience in perfecting the technique and the softening of public attitudes towards the attempts. Likewise, once personal attacks on family, friends, relatives, and random passers-by become expected and perfected, the Dems will be running unopposed in a lot of elections.

Jul 4, 2009 - 11:21 am 29. sheesh:

14 Mark Noonan . . . I Do get it. And I agree with it. That said, I don’t think Sarah Palin will rescue anybody from anything, except herself from obscurity. Not for a minute did I buy her folksy awe shuck-and-jive. I maintain she was wildly unqualified for national office. And in her time on that stage, I think she proved she was as capable as any politician at dodging the truth and working the system for her own personal advantage.

All that aside, if she is just plain fed up with the BS that defines how our political system operates, and if she just wants to cash in and live the good life of unjustified celebrity and benefit her family as a result, I say more power to her. Should she have waited until her term was up? Maybe. It IS kind of chickenshit to quit at halftime. That said, I don’t think Alaskans are going to suffer from representation withdrawal. What the hell, walk away rich.

Jul 4, 2009 - 11:21 am 30. vivo:

Sorry, dear Republicans, but Palin is not cut out to be a successful politician. Just look at her record. Quitting her elected job because she can’t take the pressure. Abuse of power, absolved or not. Fear of the media. Clinging on her family for pity and attention. She quit now, she will quit in the future. Good for her (selfish) but not for her electorate. She’s not totally stupid, but she’s totally ambitious for power and money. Mark my words.

Now the media will really eat her up, Michael Jackson anyone?

Jul 4, 2009 - 11:21 am 31. John Glube:

To borrow an old cliche, the universe will unfold as it should.

Those who predict she is finished are fools and those who believe she will soar will be delighted.

As to the democrats (and the liberals in the media), you will of course attack her decision.

The author of this piece and some posters are already mimicking the DNC talking points.

In the interim, listen to what Governor Palin actually said:

Then make up your own mind.

Jul 4, 2009 - 11:23 am 32. davidt:

Unlike most polititians Palin didn’t get into politics as a get rich scheme or to be that special someone everybody fawns over.

She got into politics in order to do what was needed to be done.

Remaining Governor is what most polititians would do in order to advance their career. In Palin’s case it is a hinderance to doing what is needed to be done, ie, save the country.

Palin will run for President in 2012. She will win, either as a Republican or as the leader of a new conservative/libertarian party.

Sarah Palin did not possess dictatorial powers. She could not snap her fingers and make these goofy ethics laws disappear. In the meantime, they were severely damaging her financially. Once again, she is a woman of modest means. Palin cannot casually laugh off $500,000 in legal bills. Apparently, her outside fund raising efforts were only raising about 20% of the necessary funds.

Why do you care if it’s political suicide, jazz shaw? Anything to get MJ and Obama out of the headlines on a July 4th weekend is not political suicide but patriotic. I just received in the mail yesterday a hand written note from Sarah Palin, not from Gov. Sarah Palin for my maximum contribution of $150 to her legal fund – Alaska Fund Trust. I’ll wait and see what Sarah Palin will do after July 26, 2009 and support her wholeheartedly.

Jul 4, 2009 - 12:00 pm 38. Ellen K:

If she did choose to simply walk away, I don’t know that I would blame her. The creeps at every venue from Moveon.org to CBS network have vilified her as a woman, as a mother and as a candidate. And on top of that, they also dragged her children into the mix with portrayals of her Down’s syndrome child into cartoon buffoonery. Would anyone tolerate such stereotyping of Obama’s children? of course not, because it is seamy, low and disgusting. But those are the tactics that were used to push Obama to the White House.

I think she takes a breather. She will regroup and rebrand. She will take to the speech circuit and learn how to deal with the leftists in the press. And by the time the midterms come around, she will be running, just like Obama did two years before the election. I expect a book, because that seems to be part of the process these days. I also expect that she won’t be as forgiving as before, nor will she use any of the existing Republican sources for her background. Frankly, after reading some of the catty and anonymous remarks about Palin from McCain operatives, I am glad he lost. They deserved to lose. But right now the American People are losing in droves. Losing jobs, losing money. And Pelosi and Reid are pushing through leftist legislation as fast as they can because they KNOW once the American people realize they have been had, congress WILL change at the midterms. And Sarah will be right in the thick of it promoting candidates that share her vision and that of millions like her.

You guys just wish she was done. She hasn’t even started yet.

Mr Shaw, you seem to think that she is guilty of ethics violations, at least you imply it. That is irresponsible journalism at its worst. Until you have proof that she is guilty of something you should keep that aspect of your nonsense to yourself. Being accused by political rivals with ulterior motives does not mean you are guilty. Perhaps you should be falsely accused and your family accosted constantly and then you can stand in judgment of Palin. Until then, your opinion is meaningless.

Jul 4, 2009 - 12:24 pm 43. vb:

You are spot on. The Palins don’t have a Tony Rezko in their circle to cushion financial shortfalls. And if it’s true that these ethics attacks are now aimed at businesses in Wasilla with whom they have dealt, the financial burdens could spread beyond the Palins. Sarah has just loosened some chains that were holding her down. Now she is free to speak her mind and follow her own course. Let’s not judge her just yet.

Kabud,

Because she won’t care about the power elites, should she seek and win the White House. Perhaps not Palin, but it will be someone like her to rescue this country – we cannot afford to any longer be governed by people who have a career in politics. Ronald Reagan, our greatest President since Lincoln, held two offices – Governor and President. Experience is needed, but he wasn’t one of those self-seekers who crawl their way up to the top. Obama managed to jump to the head of the class out of sequence, as it were, but he’s just another one of those people for whom power and privilege are the measure of the man.

Wave your magic wand and place me in the White House tomorrow and imagine what I’d do…I sure as heck wouldn’t even think about signing a 1000+ page Spendulus bill until I’d read it all and thoroughly understood each and ever aspect of its provisions…and then I’d spend the rest of my administration just implementing that because when you’re spending that much money doing that many things, its enough on the plate. But, of course, I wouldn’t even sign such a bill – the mere fact that it was 1000+ pages would cause me to immediately veto it and tell Congress to send me something 10 pages or less, or jump in a lake.

I’m a citizen, and thus I take a citizen’s view of the issue – Sarah Palin is, too…with the addition of being a fabulous woman of immense intellect, character and courage. She scares the living poop out of the political elite.

Jul 4, 2009 - 12:42 pm 46. Left Coast Mike:

Don’t bet on it Mr. Shaw.

Americans voted for an imbecil for President.

Why not an intelligent woman who has shown the world that she can run the largest state in the Union?

Jul 4, 2009 - 12:57 pm 47. me:

@ #2 David Thompson – “Alaska’s ethic laws apparently are utterly insane. They are a quintessential example of legislators passing laws without foreseeing the unintentional consequences…It is my understanding, and I’m admittedly a bit confused on this point, that Alaska allows any citizen the right to charge the governor with ethic violations at a drop of the hat.”

Sarah Palin championed those very ethics laws – in fact that was how she won the Governor’s race in the first place. Those are her laws. With her signature on them.

If she can’t withstand the scrutiny of a law that she herself authored then something is very very wrong.

This comment and many others by the likes of elitists like Frum, Krauthammer, Brooks, etc. etc. etc. are just wishful thinking. I’m thinking that by this time next year, when these folks are noting the thousands of enthusiastic Republicans and independents flocking to hear her campaign speeches in support of Rubio, Toomey, and other genuine conservatives, serious cases of heartburn will be starting to set in. And when the GOP recaptures the House and dramatically narrows the ‘rat lead in the Senate in November 2010, and Zero’s popularity rating is approaching the unemployment rate, Sarah will get a lot of the credit, and will be well on her way to blow-out victories in Iowa and South Carolina primaries in the Spring of 2012.

Deal with it.

Jul 4, 2009 - 1:19 pm 49. RunningDogLackey:

Alaska has about 2/3 the population of Rhode Island.

That means she is Governor of a tiny state with about the same number or people as Metro Pittsburgh.

Land mass aside, she is basically a glorified County Commissioner.

But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends–
It gives a lovely light!

I never heard of Jazz Shaw and after reading this air head BS article I understand why. This guy should have stayed on vacation and saved us his opinions.

This lady will be kicking butt in no time. I actually would rather have her not run for President. I think she should go on the attack every day and night and fill the air waves with her conservative views, her good looks, her patriotism, her family, her special needs child and so on!! Her pro America/gun rights/anti abortion stances will drive the media elites competely out of their minds. That will be fun to watch.

Jul 4, 2009 - 1:54 pm 53. stuart Williamson:

arholey and eman get it. Smart move. She is one savvy, tough, and clear thinking woman. Here’s her thought process:

If I stay in this governorship, I will continue to be harassed, and sued, and spend 50% of the time defending myself and family from the venom of the Obama/Alinsky forces. I will be unable to concentrate on my duties as a full-time governor. I will be cheating on the people of Alaska. The decent thing to do is to resign, turn the responsibility over someone I trust to give the job their full, undivided attention.

I have no future, no hope of support, within the GOP as it exists today. The inner circles have made it clear that they not only look down on me, but will actively support the Democrats’ efforts to crush me. They have done it before when they tried to defeat me for the Governorship. But I have identified those power-brokers within the party who see things the way I do, and who I can turn to, on a personal basis, for counsel and encouragement.

I believe fiercely in the Cnstitution, free-enterprise, and traditional American values, and will cntinue to fight for them. I am convinced that the present administration is dedicated to imposing a Socialist government on our Republic. I am prepared to devote myself to fighting them from outside party support. To the degree I succeed on my own, I can count on attracting a truly supportive group of elected Republicans, similarly disenchanted.

I have demonstrated to myself and to the world that I have a strong appeal to a vast number of middle-class Americans, of both parties and no party, with both my message and my personality. I have witnessed the energy that I can give to a culture-based political movement.

And I know from the rising swell of anti-Obama, anti-socialism sentiment, as evidenced in the Tea Parties, that there is a growing body of support for a movement of believers in the American Way that rejects party interference.

That movement is leaderless, crying out for some dynamic independent person to rally around and do the confrontational job that the gutless GOP will never achieve.

I believe, and have enough self-awareness and confidence in my own strength of character, that I can fill that role. And I have sufficient indication from many conservatives in positions of power, that I will fapidly gain a strong cadre of influential support.

I”ll need them, because the counter-attack from the socialists will be merciless. But that, too, will give me a great opportunity. The MSM, in its below the belt tactics, will not be able to ignore me, to place the “cone of silence” that they have used with Obama’s roots and lies. It will all be out in the open: they will lose those people who have been blinded, and they’ll lose who become disgusted with their dirty tactics.

Do I have the guts to face the onslaught? Yes I do. With my experience of facing their venom, knowledge of their weaknesses, and time to concentrate on honing my speaking skills, I am ready to take on whatever whatever they trow at me. I have a great advantage: they are afraaid of me.

Do I want to emerge as a Presidential candidate? No. That is not my objective. I have never cast myself in that role: my opponents on both sides have done so. I just want to be a major factor in turning the tide. I would be perfectly willing to serve under a strong and trustworthy President, in a position that used my knowledge and capabilities to serve the nation. Or just consider my job done, turn my back on politics, and go back to a quiet life with my family and friends in Alaska.

Time is of the essence.

YES! I’ll go for it.

All right-thinking Americans should hank God for Sarah Palin.

Jul 4, 2009 - 2:05 pm 54. Sebastian Shaw:

Sarah Palin is not committing political suicide; if anything, she is preserving her own political options by quitting so she can regroup; obviously, unlike the blue blood insider Republicans, she does not have millions to pay for legal fees. I believe she will rise like a phoenix from the ashes & much better for it in the long run. Most of the so-called criticism is from the Leftists & some blue blood John McCain Republicans who are terrified of Sarah Palin given she can draw an audience like an oasis in the desert.

Jul 4, 2009 - 2:05 pm 55. Spider79:

Love this line from you Shaw

“Given the fact that the media will peer into each and every nook and cranny of your life, a term in the White House might not be your best bet if you choose to cut and run under the pressure of that scrutiny.”

I guess it all depends on who you are, young Jazz. There is a Leftist Radical in the White House because the legacy media chose NOT to scrutinize.

Jul 4, 2009 - 2:06 pm 56. quasar:

Sarah now has her enemies in her “cooda” loop. BHO’s war room thought they had her locked in (tied down in AK with a constant battling of bogus ethics beefs). Now she has deftly out manouvered them and is locked and loaded. If anyone thinks that Sarah is some shrinking violet, better think again. She is fully aware that she is outpolling everyone seemingly in the hunt for the GOP nomination. Besides, there is still hell to be paid.

Jul 4, 2009 - 2:10 pm 57. exceller:

Things can look a lot different in a couple years. I think this move will not effect her chances at public office. I think there is a chance that it elevates her chances. I have to laugh at those who are so quick to jump on this “political suicide” bandwagon. Is this “baggage” worse than having a domestic terrorist for a friend or having a racist anti American pastor? Get a grip.

“40. Koblog:

Has anyone in the media looked at him with even 1/100th the scrutiny given Sarah?”

You betcha. Obama is the president of the United States. Sarah Palin is the aggrieved and victimized governor of Alaska. Are you trying to say that Palin has gotten more scrutiny than Obama? You’re not much of a Fox News watcher, are ya?

He didn’t have much other to quit because he never had a real job in his whole life.

And voting present in the senate is a practical way of quitting.

But dumbasses like yourself voted for him anyway.

So track record means nothing.

Jul 4, 2009 - 2:24 pm 60. RandyChandler:

Don’t stick a fork in her yet, she’s far from done. We don’t know how yet but in the near future she will find a role in trying to take control of the government out of the hands of the disastrous Democrats and attempt to rescue America from Obamanomics. Don’t hold a wake for this lady, she’s not dead yet. Save your sympathy for Jacko, yo.

Sarah Palin will have a hand in winning back the country. And you can take that to the bank — if you can find one that Big Brother hasn’t shut down.

“fighting investigations into your ethical lapses.”

the minute I saw this phrase, I decided that nothing you say here is worth any thought from me.

Except for the case involving her children’s travel, Ms Palin has fought 14 complaints against her, all of which were what we in the ‘biz’ call frivolous and vexatious. They started when she got the nod from John McCain. Any possibility there that they might be politically motivated?

Every time she leaves the state, a complaint is lodged. Every time she deals with national media on any issue other than Alaska business a complaint is lodged. She got a book contract and a complaint was lodged that she was ‘trading’ on her position as governor for personal benefit. She wears her husbands jacket at a snowmachine competition and a complaint is lodged.

In other words, her political detractors have opted to use the ethics complaint process to hound and hobble her. Please don’t tell me that’s ‘normal politics’. It isn’t.

What on earth are you thinking?

Jul 4, 2009 - 3:53 pm 66. Brian:

Jazz Shaw is a worthless individual, a man of zero accomplishment, and a misogynist to boot. It’s not really worth anyone’s time, but ample evidence of this proposition can be found in his regular postings at The Moderate Voice. One example: He recently libeled Lynn Cheney – the former Vice President’s daughter – by placing her in the same bimbo category a Meghan “I’m proud of my juicy fat ass” McCain. When commenters subsequently pointed out the former woman’s significant record of accomplishment, he simply repeated the defamation, unfazed.

The man is a bigot, and if you have the misfortune of reading a couple paragraphs of his posts, you discover something else: He’s dumb.

Jul 4, 2009 - 4:00 pm 67. Left Coast Mike:

Jul 4, 2009 - 4:49 pm 72. grtflmark:

So, Jazz Shaw – perhaps allahpundit, says the following:

“Was she aware of the media blitz which greets Barack Obama each and every time he opens his mouth, makes an impromptu gesture or stray glance?”

What does THAT have to do with the “attention” that the media gives Sarah?

It’s a WHOLE DIFFERENT KIND of attention than the type they give Obama, as they are all bumping heads around his lap in thier competition to put his one of hus body parts as deeply into their mouths as possible……it’s hard for them to SEE from that perspective.

With Sarah – it’s more like the attention that Lee Harvey Oswald gave to JFK – carefull aiming from a distance.

THEN he says:

“You know, if you’re hoping to set your standard on a hill of quality, you might not want to focus on how much of your time has been spent fighting investigations into your ethical lapses.”

Well – NOW you’re proving her point. Funny – your statement CONVICTS her of “ethical lapses” that have ALL been dismissed in a court of LAW!!

Yeah – you’re LIAR, and you’ve just helped to prove Sarah’s reasoning. Thank you.

Mein Gott! Some folks are almost on the verge of panic. She decided not to seek the second term. Ended her pipeline contract and decided to resign to give Parnell a year to boost his credentials.- Standard political practice in Europe when a politican retires and wants to give his successor a chance to get himself elected. She will now have all the necesssary time to focus herself on the most critical experience necessary for POTUS, as eloquently pointed out by one comments above mine: the COMMUNITY ORGANIZING. I also advise her to buy a couple of teleprompters and of course it is a “must” to join a rtacist church witha racist pastor to serve as her spiritual adviser.

My grandfather had a saying:

“Never explain. Your friends understand. Your enemies don’t care.”

Never have I understood the truth of that statement until now.

You columnists and talking heads don’t get it. You’ve never understood Palin, because she’s not like other prominent politicians.

She is not independently wealthy. She didn’t go to an Ivy league school. She has none of the “connections” that most politicians have. She was not one of the elite, she was one of us.

And you mother f—ing a–h—s drove her out because she wasn’t part of your cliche. You elites (and the brown-nosers who hang on them) all think you have some divine right to rule, well you don’t.

All you’ve succeeded in doing is enraging a good 30% to 40% of the population, who look at Palin and see their mother, their sister, their wife.

The image of the “good woman wronged” has enormous power, and while I doubt she will run in 2012, I am certain you have not heard the last of Sarah Palin.

“I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint…”

“How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country, and though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.”

Only thing is Palin is not bound by their antiquated rules of engagement. Time and Sarah Palin will decide the outcome.

Speaking as an outsider I have to say that there is something very disturbing about the way you guys in the US treat Sarah Palin. I can’t put my finger on what it is exactly…… but the ugly scorn the Democrats and plenty of Republicans heap on her is wrong on so many levels.

I’d love to hear a genuine reasoned argument as to why she is hated so much…and I mean hated…not disliked……not unpopular…..but actually hated. What is so appalling about her? Do any of you really give yourself two honest minutes to think about it?

As I said..there’s something disturbing about it all. Chicago crooks and domestic terrorists are ok (Bill Ayers anyone?) but a successful intelligent attractive working mother is…apparently..the root of all evil?

The lunatics have taken over the asylum guys. Sort it out.

Jul 4, 2009 - 7:21 pm 84. Dave:

Jazz Shaw is a moron.

Sarah was the VICTIM of a political HOMICIDE, being slowly killed by Alinsky devotees/Obamatons who were constantly filing phony ethics complaints against her so she was hamstrung and could not govern. One of those complaints was from a person whose name was NOT on the rolls of Alaskan citizens, a PHONY NAME! Any lawyer submitting such a filing should be disbarred and publicly whipped.

By resigning, she becomes a private citizen and presumably not subject to ethics complaints.

If Shaw thinks her popularity has waned, he should think again– no, he should LEARN how to think.

Jul 4, 2009 - 7:27 pm 85. nonny:

I believe this link might shed some light. Palin is taking leftards to court for defamation.

Ace.mu.nu got the scoop

Palin has taken the offensive in court. Apparently she’s decided that if she has to spend 80% of her time in court, she’s going to be the plantiff. God knows there’s no shortage of deep-pocketed liars who’ve publicly besmirched her.

She has also learned that you don’t have to win in court to kill your opponents. Just ‘discover’ them to death. They’ll be broke before they ever see the judge.

It occurs to me that, after her stint as AK gov is over, opponents are going to have a lot less legal immunity. It’s disgusting to go after opponents by bankrupting them in court, but the lefties started it.

I think she’s starting out small to get some precedents on her side. Look for NBC & Soros to start putting up legal defense for the early targets.

GO SARAH!

Many of you are complaining about the ethics violations. While I think some are absurd, most seem to be forgetting that the most expensive ethics violation that existed was the one that she herself filed against herself. Also the folks who decide whether these are legitimate are not were 3 people hand picked by Sarah Palin. No surprise they find her innocent of all wrongdoing. I agree that attacks on her kids should be off limits, but who kept throwing them in the limelight again and again. I hope these rumors of a big scandal are just that…rumors. I would hate to see another phony Christian. If she is quitting to earn money, or to protect her family…more power to her. But folks, she is a politician. She threw out many of the despicable complaints about Obama, she revved up her crowds, and not once did she stop them from yelling things like “kill Obama. There has been plenty of hate on both sides..would be nice to see it stop.

Jul 4, 2009 - 9:47 pm 91. Bad Karma:

Maybe Palin didn’t want to continue since she didn’t have any time as a “community organizer”.

The left/media is simply enthralled with this woman. Reminds me of a grade-school playground, where the boy likes the girl and instead of telling her, he hits her and make fun of her. Same thing in this situation. They go after her, but why not the other women in politics that truely and openly operate on the shady side? My second question is why do they care one bit that she’s stepping down? Coverage all over the place about this, after all the vicious attacks she steps down and they still continue? The left/media are severely mentally challenged.

Thatcher used her enormous wit when answering attempts to ridicule her.

It is a perfect weapon against a woman by the way.
Palin will not be perceived as a president who will annihilate the enemy in a split second. She did not pick a fight , well because she is too perfect as a woman)).

I may even suggest that she received serious threats and dont forget what happened to Kennedys

I’ve heard that Obama is kind of seen by the enemy as a very dangerous and decisive and deceptive

>Wave your magic wand and place me in the White House tomorrow and imagine what I’d do…
I think it is very serious uop there and choices are limited and risks are high.

> fabulous woman of immense intellect, character and courage. She scares the living poop out of the political elite.

I like her very much)) But i sence that in her case some one very powerful is fighting against her. She could fight back but she quit. I dont know why, i think it is either was too much for her or she got seriously scared by something

Jul 4, 2009 - 10:32 pm 94. Emma:

In the aftermath of McCain choosing her, I realized an awful truth: women are still second class citizens in this country. And I thought that was sad enough, but there was an even more depressing truth to come: women value their own political party more than they do any notion of equality. I lost count of the number of times I read comments like “she should stay home and take care of her family.” I still remember Tina Fey’s portrayal of her as a stupid bimbo, simply because she was in the wrong political party.

I wish her well. I hope they leave her the hell alone now.

If it is death, it is not suicide, but a political homicide, acceded to for economic reasons. Billary saw no dishonor in keeping a tight clamp on the public teat while getting the taxpayer to foot their massive legal bills. A more moral person might see the advantage of personal sacrifice — short term — Give up the biggest job Palin may ever have for the benefit of her Family, State and Nation. Time will tell if it was the right choice. But I think Bill Clinton certainly should have done the same thing. And his ethics problems were real, and his excuses and self-justifications were all lies. I do not feel the same disgust towards Sarah’s statements as I believe her ethics complaints were all bogus.

She realized she can no longer effectively govern her state – for heaven’s sake her own legislators were working overtime to sabotage her agenda for political reasons – she risked her political future for the sake of Alaska.
No other politician would have the guts to do so as such Sarah comes across bizarre. That’s what people love so much about her, she’s sincere, she’s honest and she’ll do the right thing whether it looks good on her résumé or not.
The way Sarah sees it, the media obsession with Sarah Palin may not go away but it will be Sarah Palin they go after and not Governor Palin R-AK, leaving Alaska at least to resume to normality.

Now for the big question: does America, let alone Sarah Palin, have enough time, or is our decadent culture, as represented by Jazz and his ilk, too far gone?

Seems to me Sarah has her priorities straight. Family, country, state. Clearly remaining as Governor is a strain on her & her family and the state of Alaska itself. She has accomplished much of what she set out to do in Alaska but sees that the media and those who fear her will not stop attacking. She has disarmed them as now she will be a private citizen. How better to protect her family than to take them out of the back biting politic that she is in and sequester them back home. The press no longer has license. She can now, if she chooses, use her celebrity to try to save this nation from what many of us perceive as a Wolf in Sheep’s clothing, or rather a Statist in liars clothing. Either way, it took courage and a clear decision making process on her part that is based on moral principles, not the confiscatory Saul Alinsky driven man currently occupying the White House. Lets hope that she can help stop the spread the wealth train before it gets too far out of the station.

Ok. *You* try being governor while the left (and a lot of the elite right) make vile and personal attacks against you and your family – up to and including jokes about your 14 year old daughter being raped.

Nobody should have to endure such baseless and sick attacks.

I’m hoping she starts answering and attacking back at the ‘Lettermans’ of the left (and right). Something she could never do as a Governor.

I think Sarah quit because she is an honest and straight forward person who knows that running for the presidency is a full time job and being governor of Alaska is also a full time job. Give me an honest person any day over one who wears a suit well, talks a good talk, but has no moral compass.

Jul 5, 2009 - 7:35 am 105. AndyJ:

When will this woman stop whining? It’s politics; it’s a rough old trade. The Clintons suffered far more than this at the hands of the media and the Republicans and lived to tell the tale (inculding an attempt at impeachment – odly enough not a call made when Reagan lied through his teeth when supporting murderers and rapits in central Ameria during Iran-Contra or when Bush Jr became the Torturer-in-Chief). Palin’s a fifth rate regional hack: in a year, no one will care. But what all this really exposes is he lack of upcoming talent in the GOP. It could be a long few years for them unless they get their act together and stop appealing to the 20% of the population that already agree with them.

Jul 5, 2009 - 7:50 am 106. scott:

You accuse her of ethical lapses as if this has been established. This is simply another hit-piece on Sarah Palin. One has to admire the deft manner in which you dropped the phrase, as if it was simply matter of fact undisputed truth.

You are a political hack and the sort we need far far less of in this nation. You know, the opposite of Sarah Palin.

What your ilk fails to understand these days is: we are not simply having a political discussion here in the good ole USA. It isn’t just a disagreement among friends. A minor issue of doctrine that needs ironing out. NO! We are inching toward civil war and if the Left does not soon get out of our face there’s going to be blood … and lots of it.

The left is also looking for additional resume enhancement. Let the republicans put a black or latino in the supreme court? Hell no! Destroy the sob’s.

Let the republicans put a woman in the white house? Hell no! Destroy the bi*otch!

Dem’s just wanna have fun and say that “they” represent all the groups that are oppressed. Women, minorities, gays, etc. just so long as Dem’s get credit for putting the first into places of prominence.

Then they can rewrite history of them being the real oppressors who fought desegregation. And with them handing out lots of candies to these groups, they will try to lock in the vote for generations to come.

Unfortunately for Dem’s, these “firsts” will be meaningless when the fruits of current policies are born. These fruits will be ugly, bad tasting, lacking in nutrition, and lead to a malformed future for people around the world.

How perfectly ironic. Shaw won’t offer even moral support to Iranians fighting in the streets against the mullahs because we don’t have the actual tallies from the election there – best that we let them suffer until they give us proof of corruption! But Sarah Palin? For her it’s attack first and ask questions later, though no one knows why she really did what she did. It’s another one of countless examples of how Shaw is motivated by a myopic hatred of the ‘right’. He doesn’t work from a set of principles, rather from a set of prejudices.

If anyone is in danger of committing suicide, it’s the unstable and bitter Jazz Shaw. This is a guy who has made a name for himself by attacking Republicans – now one of his favorite targets has stepped from the stage. I think you’re going to see a lot of stone throwing scribblers lose their minds over Palin’s decision. The next few weeks we’ll see a lot of bitter, vicious little columns demonizing the woman and her family, complete with calling her a coward for not sticking around for more of a beating. It’s telling, though. Shaw and his cadre of thugs think themselves open-minded – they’ll tell you what drives them is the earnest desire to take the poison out of politics – that’s why they’re “moderates”. They’re self-described moderates because that’s the shield they use to attack from behind – there’s no courage there, and certainly no civility. Nothing positive or optimistic comes from such craven simpletons.

My opinion about Sarah Palin is that she ought to have stayed in the governorship and finished the job she started – but I don’t know what’s going on in her personal life, and it just might be that her family demanded a break from the hostility. She might have recognized that the rest of her tenure in Alaska would have been spent fending off spiteful attempts to bankrupt and slander her. She’s got a tough skin, but how many of us could have gone through what she did the last two years without flipping out? Time will give us the answer.

But don’t cry for Jazz Shaw. He has the nature of a red-eyed toy poodle snapping at the ankles of the men around him, he can’t help himself. The next popular Republican to come along will be savaged by Shaw, and will show the rest of us again just how immoderate he can be.

It is so-o-o-o-o immensely gratifying that a number (even a majority) of the responses to another pathetic Jazz Shaw hit piece seem to get it.

Sarah Palin came to Southern California in October to a rally. It was a state that McCain and the Republicans had ceded with no conceivable chance of winning (or even promoting any of happless state Californian Republican candidates) and yet, she drew 20,000 nonetheless.

We’re talking Carson, California, fer crissakes! A city South of L.A., North or Long Beach and surrounded by a liberal minority population and she pulls a capaicity 20K ant the Home Depot center at CSUDH.

Her power is not in running for President but in drawing these crowds for those who may. If the passion overflows for her, then she will run. But, in the mean time, there is no denying that she will be a big draw on the campaign circuit..

Anyone who thinks Sarah Palin can be elected POTUS is just plain naive. I think she is a strong woman, but lacks the character, credibility, experience and authority to convince Americans. Her walking out on the Governorship of Alaska, only adds to her confused biography. Ever hear the old adage, “Don’t quit your day job?” – well she did and now there will be a price to pay.

I would not vote for her. Period. I do sympathize with her for the trashing of her family and career by the MSM and John McCain’s campaign managers. (speaks volumes about McCain). That said, recent events do not qualify her for higher office. She is a bit deranged if she believes “quitting” on the state level will allow her to achieve national prominence.

Republicans that believe she is the “second” coming, need to get a life. The Republicans need strong leadership, a patriot, someone with conviction, willing to give their all for this country – not notoriety or money. So far, I see no one in the running that even comes close. Until there is a common voice of outrage and a perspective for saving this country, there will be bumbling and stumbling.

As for Ms. Palin, I hope that she can find peace and satisfaction in the arms of her family. I also hope she stays in Alaska, for the sake of all Americans.

The global problem is the status of women

Women are the source of creation on the planet. When a woman creates out of fear and abuse, her pain is passed on to the next generation. When a woman creates out of strength and security, her love is her gift to all humankind. When we honor the creative essence of women, the nobility of the mother and the feminine aspect of the divine (which resides within every woman and man), we will not only find meaningful solutions to our problems, we will discover the sacredness of all life.

Jul 5, 2009 - 9:50 pm 136. DanR:

A few people commented that Sarah Palin is a sage because she understands that she doesn’t need to wield governmental power in order to have influence. I’m sorry, but that’s not the issue. She was elected to serve at the pleasure of the voters of Alaska, and is violating their wishes by leaving, unless the legislative process determines otherwise. Also, this “gem” of wisdom deserves the same amount of congratulation as if she were to just discover that “sharing things makes people happy.”

Now, I understand that the disenfranchised chunk of the conservative movement sees no use for government — and especially so when a democrat sits in the Oval Office, at which point government is more useless and hateful than a hole in the head. So, when the government is the enemy of the people, it might look benign for a public servant to abandon ship — even commendable. AGAIN, that’s not the point — the other team is going to win some rounds, folks. When that happens, it doesn’t mean the system has failed. It means the system is functioning. If one team wins all the time, the system is broken. So, what ought we to do? Work to maintain the system that serves the people, rather than punishing the system for allowing the other team to run it. If Palin took her oath of office seriously, she simply would not be resigning (at least until further legislative process gave sufficient reason).

Finally — a third party based upon family values, Christianity, guns rights, low taxes, unrestricted markets, and anti-foreignness would never be viable. It has nothing to offer except a pressure-release for like-minded citizens. There’s no cohesive foreign policy stance, beyond the general sentiment that all things American are likely superior to any alternative. No plan for the maintenance of peace, except the faint hope that a constant reactionary stance will intimidate the fur’ners who only respect power and only fear violence. No plan for domestic policy, aside from the faint hope that our huge infrastructure could somehow be magically maintained and improved by the ingenuity of enterprising Galts who are just waiting to pop out of the woodwork at any moment (with their millions of sweaty dollars) and save the world. And finally, it leaves out a large chunk of the future ranks of the Conservative movement — folks like me, who value knowledge, do not fear tolerance, and realistically understand that the future owes me nothing.

If Sarah Palin was trying to send the message that she’s ready for a Presidential run, resigning as Alaska governor was the wrong way to do it. There’s no way good news for her career comes out of this resignation.

Kuddos to her for making this announcement the day before July 4th – knowing full and well that most journalists will be out of pocket and not on hand to spew their hate towards her and powerful women in general.

Kuddos to her for saving Alaksan’s the money from the stupid frivolous lawsuits that most Americans know nothing about.

When Owebambi dissed his Senatorial duties for two years to pursue the Presidential office no one spoke up about his lack of focus. No one mentions where HIS expensive suits and shirts come from – or how much money he and his greedy wife spend on ONE dinner out. Is Armani one of his sponsors? The left has nothing of substance to offer just more of the same old promise them everything which they cannot fulfill, and the general public are beginning to see through their empty suite of a leader.
Go ahead leftist say what you will, double digit unemployment is right around the corner.

Bring Chavez in and replace Obama with him, there would not be much difference.
Might as well do it, Obama is even supporting Chavez’s Honduran position over the Constitutionally correct Honduran Supreme Court. But then I never met a leftist that respected the constitution anyway, except when it was to their advantage to do so.

You can bet that the current administration through some intermediary has a full time team dedicated to dig up dirt on Gov. Palin & anyone remotely associated with her.
Yet we can not even see our current Presidents birth certificate or college transcripts or his wife’s college thesis. no no it’s all off limits to us peasants.

As a lefty type libertarian, I will say this about Sarah Palin.

I wish McCain never choose her as VP.

The reason why I say that is because I do not think she is fit for the national stage. I have been doing some research on her, and she seems perfect for the small city/state leadership position. Her governship would have been great up there in Alaska, and was going great, but then John McCain came along, plucked her out of her element, and set her down on the national stage. It just wasn’t her. The media attacks, the comedian cracks, it just wasn’t her cup of tea, and she showed it. IMO, if McCain had not choosen her, she would have been able to finish out her duties as governer with style and poise, and not finished the way that she did. Sure, there are some things I do not like abou her, but the way she was treated by both the national spotlight as well as the McCain camp derailed her from what could have been a great career as governer of Alaska.
