Palin’s Advocacy: The Turning Point in Health Care Reform Debate

It was her timely intervention that put the Democrats off their game and turned the debate around.

For an uneducated, unsophisticated rube and former governor from a backwater state, Sarah Palin sure can drive a debate.  With prospects for passage of his sweeping overhaul of the American health care delivery system fading with every speech, President Barack Obama is making  it increasingly clear that Palin will be recognized, for good or ill, as perhaps the most prominent single political figure responsible for stopping it in its tracks.

It’s a remarkable story. A failed vice-presidential candidate and resigned governor — unfairly viewed by many as a cruel joke –  reached from beyond the political grave her elitist critics prematurely dug for her and her political future to thwart a popular president prematurely regarded by the same elite that shunned her as perhaps the most gifted politician this nation has ever produced. If Sarah Palin were a sitting governor, a failed presidential candidate, or even a state legislator, her influence in the health care debate would not be as unexpected. It is the fact that she is a private citizen, completely out of politics save for a small political action committee, that makes this story unique.

How did she do it? That’s where the story gets even more remarkable.

There were no public appearances or speeches, no glitzy ad campaigns, no publicity tours, no interviews in the mainstream press or any new media outlet. Sarah Plain killed health care reform with a posting on her Facebook page, an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, and an exquisite sense of timing.

If history remembers one thing from the current debate over health care, it will remember the phrase “death panel.” Just as Harry and Louise form the enduring image from President Clinton’s failed attempt to take over the health care system, the “death panel” image will come to symbolize Obama’s failure and Palin’s triumph.

It’s almost the perfect political catchphrase. “Death panel” encapsulates everything people fear about the consequences of a government with too much power over those it is supposed to serve.

That turn of phrase, delivered just as Congress was getting ready for the August recess, was the bolt of lightning that set ablaze the brush fires of public unrest over Obama’s plan which manifested itself in town hall meetings across the country.  It robbed the White House of message control at a critical juncture and forced the administration to respond to the charge — and to Palin.

Seriously Gibbs and other white house spokespeople/staff have their work cut out for them 24/7 covering for Obama. It’s really not that hard to pick apart Obama’s incompetence if it were not for the ardent love affair the msm has with him.

That Sarah can challenge their darling and alter the course of debate(s) is truly remarkable. For someone who has been so grossly vilified to do as she has shows great courage, immense resolve, conviction and clout. She puts many serving reps on all sides to shame.

It’s been clear for a while that the Democrats are terrified of Citizen Sarah and will do anything they can to marginalize or delegitimize her, just as they’re struggling to do with the 9/12 demonstration in Washington. But it’s now imperative that concerned conservatives ask the next question:

– Establishmentarian Republicans;
– The Establishment-supporting Punditocracy;

Sarah Heath Palin made a huge part of her reputation as a corruption fighter: the “new broom” that so many aspiring pols have claimed to be, but so few have actually been. Her ascent to national prominence threatens many a place at the Washington feeding trough — and those whose faces are immersed therein are massively disinclined to compete in a truly free market once again.

(For example, consider former Senator Robert Dole of Kansas, who’s no longer in public life. Dole almost single-handedly turned Archer Daniels Midland into D.C.’s biggest corporate welfare client, and made the defense of ADM’s subsidies and special subventions one of his principal missions in Washington. ADM, in return, lent its considerable weight to every one of Dole’s campaigns. How do you suppose ADM views Citizen Sarah?)

Conservatives who would love to see Sarah Heath Palin become the GOP standard-bearer should be thinking hard about what it will take to carve a path to the 2012 presidential nomination for her. It won’t be the Democrats, or their Old Media lapdogs, who put up the stiffest resistance to that.

I think she has taken good advice by quitting work and concentrating on “important things” what she wants to do in her future. After all, her former political carrer as governor and candidate ended in shambles and her family was disintegrating. Now, at least, she can take some time to get educated in the facts of the world and big time politics. After all, the cash is still flowing in from big oil and now big insurance by the millions so she has no real financial worries. I think she did the right thing. She spoke with confidence and the Christian right in do not tend to warm to females perceived as pushy. She could switch parties, but then she would lose big business funding…anyway, Good Luck Sarah.

Sarah is the only conservative with the intelligence/brains to figure out the weakest point in the lefts attack for “health reform”. She also had the integrity and guts to counter attack this weakest of weak points. the bill gets past …the government sets up an administration to run the program (maybe hires Acorns’ laid off or fired workers) …cost soar, they ALWAYS do when the government is in control (like a compulsive eater there is never enough) ….oh yeah the unions will be there, so high wages and need to grow. …OH LOOK …now there is no money for health care. ok …lets start cutting benefits …lets start rationing.

the bills all have commitees that will oversee the distribution of services and care. these commitees are the defacto DEATH PANELS.

Alaska is not a backwater state. Unique among all the states, Alaska is bounded by two nations, Canada and Russia. Canada is friendly, and a trading partner. Russia is hostile and aggressive, which makes Alaska unique in another way, that by being a frontline state in a geopolitical sense. California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas border on Mexico, but Mexico is not really an enemy of the U.S. Mexico is just ill governed and chaotic, and that chaos spills across the border. I appreciate Palin’s comments on this subject. She was dead on(pun intended). However, her “advocacy” was not the turning point in the debate.

I fear the Palin supporters are appearing starstruck and attributing characteristics and accomplishments to their idol just as the Obama sychophants have done. To do so only invites disappointment and defeat. Nobody is as perfect as their respective fans seem to suggest.

The plain ol’ American patriots who showed up at the town hall meetings en masse were the catalyst for the downfall of the public option(that was the main point of the dissent, right?). I think the best moment was when that woman got major MSM coverage at the Specter/Sebelius town hall when she asked Specter why he thought the government could run the health care system when they couldn’t even manage the cash for clunkers program. That was the turning point and it snowballed from there.

Palin’s comments were important to be sure. The “death panel” debate will definitely be remembered, but had the throngs of regular Americans not turned out to have their voices heard (which they were doing way before the death panel comment) this battle would have never ended in the defeat of Obama’s government takeover.

Having said all that, I am sure most people don’t have a problem giving Palin credit for speaking out on that issue, but giving her overwhelming credit for the turning point of the debate begins to sound like the Obamatrons who worship The One.

I’d suggest going back to post 7. Francis W. Porretto nails it. The immediate threat to a Palin candidacy in 2012 is entrenched power, regardless of party affiliation. She has a proven record as a reformer.

The early Palin interviews set the template for the extended narrative. 2 things, a.) those were deliberate hatchet jobs designed to elicit the very response that you had, it worked, which is why they continue to do it to conservatives b.) any governor not coming from NY, CA, TX, and maybe a few others, was going to have an orientation period in which they would be behind the curve on national issues, especially those of international scope. By the time of the debates, and certainly by the end of the campaign, she had found her footing and was performing up to task, though clearly still assimilating policy issues. But the die had been cast. If you don’t agree with her politics fine, but to suggest that she is intellectually unqualified based on that narrative is shallow in its premise, in my opinion.

It would be nice if the pat answer was Sarah walking out into Main Street as Gary Cooper did in “High Noon” to meet the black hats. Unfortunately, life is more complex than that and credit goes to many, of which Sarah Palin may deserve the highest accolades.

She lit a fire into the Conservative cause in 2008 and can build it further. Sarah Palin needs to climb more, strive more and show the country that she is ready to lead.

She can inherit the mantle of Reagan, but like him, she needs to get out on the hustings and learn and master retail politics on a National level. Lest you think I am critical, I am rooting for her to do it.

You can chalk it up to a senior moment, I guess. Of course, no member of the press fraternity later asked Gibson why he answered in that way.

Granted, it’s not near as bad as Sherri Sheperd of the “View” seriously trying to decide if she believes the earth is round or flat, but Gibson’s answer left his friends with their mouths hanging open.

Take President Obama trying to respond to overriding concerns that ObamaCare will use tax dollars to provide health care for illegal aliens.

During the big speech last week, Joe Wilson caught Obama in a bald faced lie.

Wilson yelled out in senate chambers (bad form although the left booed and shouted out aspersions when Bush was giving a state of the union speech) “You lie.”

If you’re following my train of thought, perhaps you ask yourself where Obama’s lie was.

I’ll tell you. Here’s where Barack lies like, say a President Clinton who said,”I had no sexual relations with that woman.” Clinton’s lawyers said the phrase, “sexual relations” didn’t apply to the kind of sex Bill had with Monica.

Obama, with his lawyers within whispering distance, told Obama to say, “people are claiming that our reform efforts will insure illegal immigrants”.

Which isn’t true. Nobody’s claiming that.

Rather, here’s the concern.

People are concerned that illegal aliens (uninsured illegal aliens) will receive free care through ObamaCare.

See the difference?

The legal loophole involves the fact that illegal aliens don’t have to be insured or “covered” to receive ObamaCare.

President Double talk then makes another totally meaningless statement when he says,” “the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally”.

“Apply”? What in the world does that mean?

It means nothing. To suggest that it’s further proof that illegal aliens won’t receive ObamaCare is a lie.

In truth, Rep, Keller introduced a provision in ObambCare that would have shut the door on illegal aliens receiving ObamaCare. Can you guess what the Democrats did? They voted it down. The vote: 28-16 on straight party lines.

The above is what provoked Joe Wilson to say, “You lie.”

Regardless of what Obama’s weasel words say, the question is whether, ObamaCare will dole out health care to illegal aliens.

I’m talking about what will actually happen. Obama is using words that sound like illegal aliens won’t receive free healthcare.

But the words are lawyer weasel words, filled with loopholes far as the eye can see.

Joe Wilson is no dummy. Obama lies with the rapidity of an assault rifle on automatic.

They are simply opposed to massive government, unsustainable deficits, tax and spend ideology, government takeover of private businesses, national health care, cap and trade tax schemes, and using shading political action groups to funnel taxpayer dollars into illegal activities — like ACORN has been doing all over the country since the 90s.

Obama and his uber-Leftist cadre do not represent mainstream America and it has nothing to do with his skin. The author of this article is correct. Sarah Palin has tapped into something Liberals will never understand: American independence. Sarah speaks for regular Americans who are totally fed up with the corruption that has become standard operating procedure in DC. It’s not just Democrats. The Republicans of the last years, RINOs who helped spend tons of money we didn’t even have, who brought us into two wars without a real strategy or coherent set of goals, and who allowed Leftist trolls to drive our banking industry into bankruptcy, were just as guilty.

There are good proposals on the table that will end this recession rather than prolong it into the foreseeable future, genuinely reform health care to rein in these spiraling costs without turning over the whole industry to the incompetent hands of bureaucrats, and bring the United Nations to heel before it succeeds in its nefarious goals. Notice the mainstream media is not talking about any of those proposals. They’re talking about the administration’s ultra-Leftist radical ideas, all of which are the exact opposite of what America needs.

I have read the entire text of proposed House Bill 3200: The Affordable Health Care Choices Act of 2009. I studied it with particular emphasis from my area of expertise, constitutional law. I was frankly concerned that parts of the proposed law that were being discussed might be unconstitutional. What I found was far worse than what I had heard or expected. To begin with, much of what has been said about the law and its implications is in fact true, despite what the Democrats and the media are saying. The law does provide for rationing of health care, particularly where senior citizens and other classes of citizens are involved, free health care for illegal immigrants, free abortion services, and probably forced participation in abortions by members of the medical profession. The Bill will also eventually force private insurance companies out of business and put everyone into a government run system. All decisions about personal health care will ultimately be made by federal bureaucrats and most of them will not be health care professionals. Hospital admissions, payments to physicians, and allocations of necessary medical devices will be strictly controlled. However, as scary as all of that it, it just scratches the surface. In fact, I have concluded that this legislation really has no intention of providing affordable health care choices. Instead it is a convenient cover for the most massive transfer of power to the Executive Branch of government that has ever occurred, or even been contemplated. If this law or a similar one is adopted, major portions of the Constitution of the United States will effectively have been destroyed. The first thing to go will be the masterfully crafted balance of power between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the U.S. Government. The Congress will be transferring to the Obama Administration authority in a number of different areas over the lives of the American people and the businesses they own. The irony is that the Congress doesn’t have any authority to legislate in most of those areas to begin with. I defy anyone to read the text of the U.S. Constitution and find any authority granted to the members of Congress to regulate health care. This legislation also provides for access by the appointees of the Obama administration of all of your personal healthcare information, your personal financial information, and the information of your employer, physician, and hospital. All of this is a direct violation of the specific provisions of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution protecting against unreasonable searches and seizures. You can also forget about the right to privacy. That will have been legislated into oblivion regardless of what the 3rd and 4th Amendments may provide. If you decide not to have healthcare insurance or if you have private insurance that is not deemed “acceptable” to the “Health Choices Administrator” appointed by Obama there will be a tax imposed on you. It is called a “tax” instead of a fine because of the intent to avoid application of the due process clause of the 5th Amendment. However, that doesn’t work because since there is nothing in the law that allows you to contest or appeal the imposition of the tax, it is definitely depriving someone of property without the “due process of law. So, there are three of those pesky amendments that the far left hate so much out the original ten in the Bill of Rights that are effectively nullified by this law. It doesn’t stop there though. The 9th Amendment that provides: “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people;” The 10th Amendment states: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are preserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Under the provisions of this piece of Congressional handiwork neither the people nor the states are going to have any rights or powers at all in many areas that once were theirs to control. I could write many more pages about this legislation, but I think you get the idea. This is not about health care; it is about seizing power and limiting rights. Article 6 of the Constitution requires the members of both houses of Congress to “be bound by oath or affirmation” to support the Constitution. If I was a member of Congress I would not be able to vote for this legislation or anything like it without feeling I was violating that sacred oath or affirmation. If I voted for it anyway I would hope the American people would hold me accountable. For those who might doubt the nature of this threat I suggest they consult the source.
