Reported Obama-Hamas Contacts Bode Ill

Another clash between Obama’s public statements and his team's behind-the-scenes activities.

November 11, 2008 - by P. David Hornik
Page 1 of 2  Next ->

In an interview published Tuesday in the London-based Al-Hayat, Dr. Ahmad Yousef, political adviser to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, said senior Hamas figures had held a secret meeting with advisers to Barack Obama in Gaza before the U.S. elections.

Throughout his campaign Obama’s official line was that he would “only talk with Hamas if it renounces terrorism, recognizes Israel’s right to exist, and agrees to abide by past agreements.”

Yet Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal responded to Obama’s win on an optimistic note, telling Australia’s Sky News on Saturday that his organization was “ready for dialogue with President Obama and with the new American administration with an open mind.”

On Saturday night, though, Obama’s senior foreign policy coordinator Denis McDonough seemed to hold the fort, deflecting Mashaal’s amiability by reiterating Obama’s three-part formula for making Hamas acceptable.

For those who don’t want America to have dealings with an Islamist terror organization like Hamas, that may have sounded reassuring. But now it seems it may be too soon to feel reassured.

According to Yousef in the Al-Hayat interview, the Obama-Hamas talks were already ongoing during the U.S. election campaign: “We were in contact with a number of Obama’s aides through the Internet, and later met with some of them in Gaza, but they advised us not to reveal this information as it may influence the elections or become manipulated by McCain’s campaign.”

Yousef also claimed he personally had friendly relations with some of Obama’s advisers and that “Haniyeh will draft a congratulatory letter to Obama for his victory.”

Yousef added: “The policy Obama will instate in the Middle East will differ from that of his predecessor George W. Bush, although it is clear that the region and the Palestinian issue will not be at the top of his agenda. [Obama] will focus more on the economic crisis, Iraq, and Afghanistan.”

A clash between Obama’s public, anodyne, mainstream statements and behind-the-scenes activities of a different nature would confirm the fears of those concerned about Obama’s history of association with radical people and ideologies.

there have been over 400 terrorist attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestine this past year. The settlers are also targeting the Israeli army with their violence. Does this alarm you? As a jew it alarms me. if all you do is call your partner a terrorist do you think that helps matters? there will be no peace without compromise on both sides, simply ratcheting up the partisan attacks and hatred and fear is not going to help anyone in the US or in israel. Simply put you are not being serious on the issues, you are making attacks. come to the table with something constructive and we can fix this mess, but sit there and bad mouth everyone and all you will do is end up smelling your own fumes.

Got any credible sources of this information you could share?

Reading your report, I’m reminded of how the Lancet said there were 650K dead Iraqis as a result of the fighting there since March 2003. A bogus report, as it turns out.

“OBAMA STARTS LIKE A ROOKIE”

Ronald Reagan was a well educated man ready to be president on the very first day in office. Barack Obama is no Reagan! He is poorly read and very shallow. The president elect is nowhere near ready for prime time. More importantly, he has not worked out his issues with white people. This is obviously apparent with the way Obama treated his own grandmother and Nancy Reagan. In back of Obama’s mind, I’m sure he considers the mostly white Israelis as victimizers of the darker skinned Palestinians.

“…come to the table with something constructive and we can fix this mess”

The hard core Palestinians are not interested in fixing “this mess.” They will not be content until all of the Jews have left the Middle East. Please stop deluding yourself. Negotiating 101 tactics are successful only when both sides are seeking a win-win solution. The Palestinians only want the Jews to lose.

One of the very first things Obama will do secretly is to take major steps to destroy the black gangs of Chicago with whom he has had contacts for many years. These gangs kill people and distribute drugs and are very powerful. But, they could embarrass Obama because he has taken lots of money from them and dealt with rhem when he was a community organizer. Look for a major offensive in Chicago very early on.

But I’ll wager you dollars to donuts that Rahm doesn’t recognize Him.

Rahn Emanuel was also part of the naively childish Clinton administration that is responsible for the murders of countless Jews. Good intentions are simply not enough. Barack Obama will most likely pursue policies that unwittingly will result in emboldening the Islamic crazies in the Middle East. Remember Robert Malley? Well, he’s back! American Jews like Marty Peretz were played for suckers.

So its OK if you expand contacts with a group whose main and almost sole goal is the genocide of a people and destruction of a country as long as you are Jewish and your dad was the member of some group?

Get ready folks. Here comes feckless, incompetent, Madelaine Albright foreign policy again. Dictators and terrorists world wide are no doubt pleased.

As usual, there is no one for Israel to negotiate with in good faith. Period. Obama and company will be pissing into the wind, as usual. Nothing new, as usual. 61 percent of the eligible voters showed up in this election cycle, all most as usual; it was only 1 percent more than the last cycle. 53 percent of that 61 percent voted for Obama. That is, only 26 percent of the electorate voted for obama, hardly a mandate for the progressive revolution. Obama and company are ruling with a plurality, as usual. All we have to do is sit back and watch those people with good intentions make fools of themselves, as usual. The only question is whether to provide them with all the rope they want for their hanging.

Nov 11, 2008 - 11:13 am 17. cedarford:

The US is a global power. It cannot be dictated to by people of a small country making lists of people it demands the global power never talk to.

We don’t care in other places and situations, just about US vital interests and almost always reject the notion that we would ever salute and say “Yes sir!” to the Russians demanding we stop talking to Chechen leaders, or Turks demanding we sever all ties and contacts with Kurdish rebels who have bombed and killed in the past. Or Sierra Leone demanding we show we love them by never talking to Ivory Coast.
The right-wing Zionist demand of diplomatic blacklisting is like a pack of junior high bitches demanding no one talk to Tara because she dated Brad without Christie agreeing to it because she hoped to get back together with Brad after their Big Breakup…

Yeah, Hamas has killed. Meaningless in context of a global power that has had to pursue diplomacy with far greater killers to serve our vital interests. Terrorists and Nations. From Jefferson to Nixon to Reagan.

Part of the reason Democrats have power is they made hay of Bush’s refusal to talk with Sharon’s “enemies”, and we saw American influence disappear in critical regions from disengagement. Now we will be back at it.

Many times nothing will come of talking…but the American public wants to resume the global realist approach Presidents Truman through Clinton took, and which Bush himself agreed to after the shellacking Republicans took in the 2006 elections helped spell the end of Neocon dominance of US foreign policy.

Nov 11, 2008 - 12:58 pm 23. naftali:

Yep. I noticed how realistic it was to assume Yasser Arafat was a man of peace. Very realistic.

And speaking of realism–it’s a mistake to assume that Presidents make foreign policy in a vacuum. Truman went against the wishes of the State Dept. and recognized the State of Israel. Then Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson pretty much ignored Israel and followed the wishes of State. Only when the Arab Bloc, as it used to be called, fell in with the Soviets, did Nixon begin to strengthen ties with Israel.

The reason we are in such a precarious position regarding the Middle East isn’t because of the last 8 years but because of the previous “realistic” positions of experts and diplomats.

I still don’t know what you say to folks whose bottom line is genocide, the murder, once again, of 6 million Jews. What do you have in mind as a conversation starter?

And, one last thing, Cedarford, you might want to be realistic yourself and read a little bit of history.

Obama has another job for the gangs. At an appointed time (another Manufactured Crisis?) they (and others around the country perhaps) will help him create the necessary chaos and violence required to institute martial law/cessation of our gun rights.

Then he can round them up and make them part of his civilian force. Or, if he needs to look tough, throw them in jail. Whichever better serves his need at the time.

People like BLIP and nick and Javelin and a goodly number of others are bona fide ‘trolls’. All they do is throw grenades indiscriminently about the area.

Robert is a bit different in that respect. He makes reasonably intelligent probes of someone’s ‘position’. As if he’s trying to determine the strengths and weaknesses of an argument or philosophy.

But, I do agree that maybe this latest ‘hate’ thing is an indication that maybe a nerve has been twigged.

I think it would be good if he were to start answering question asked of him, as he expects people to answer questions he puts to them.

On the first day as president, Lincoln handed a note from commander at Ft Sumpter warning that he would have to evacuate the fort or might be blockaded or fired upon: what should he do? Guess what? Abe took the task in hand and won the Civil War…now try again and again and again. Get over it. Obama won the votes of a lot of America and McCain did not. Guess why?

Barack is president, indeed. It is fair to point out his lack of personal accomplishment. Please show me how he got into Columbia and then Harvard. He was a self-admited boozer, drug user/pusher in HS who made poor grades yet got into both those schools. Why won’t he allow the release of his transcripts? There are signs within Israel that they are being pushed to a suicidal pact. Those would be:

* No deterrence of west bank attacks
* Ohlmart insisting on immediate withdrawal from Jerusalem, the west bank and Golan heights with no quid pro quo
* No countermoves to Syrian arms and material movement to Israeli/Lebanese border

Hamas is very honest. They refuse to remove from their charter the destruction of Israel as a stated goal. So if Obama gets them to remove it that would be great. If he gets Israel to agree to some retreat and tell them to ignore this minor thing of destruction of Israel in the charter then we know he is selling them down the tubes.

So until one or the other or a war happens anything we say Obama will or won’t do is pure speculation.

Having secret talks in and of themselves isn’t a bad thing. One could argue that having those talks before he got elected was a tad presumptuous.

Let us see what the results will be. Its too late to argue if Obama is good or bad for doing this, he won the election.

BIO: Robert Malley

Robert Malley was born in 1963 to Barbara (née Silverstein) Malley, a New Yorker who worked for the United Nations delegation of the Algerian National Liberation Front, and her husband, Simon Malley (1923–2006), an Egyptian-born Jewish journalist who grew up in Egypt and worked as a foreign correspondent for Al Goumhourya, a newspaper linked closely to Gamal Abdul Nasser’s government. The elder Malley spent time in New York, writing about international affairs, particularly about nationalist, anti-imperial movements in Africa, and made a key contribution by putting the FLN on the world map.[3]

In 1969, the elder Malley moved his family — including son Robert — to France, where he founded the magazine Africasia (later known as Afrique Asia), which gave voice to the causes of the newly-independent states such as Algeria and Egypt, and to liberation struggles throughout the world. The elder Malley became a well-known journalist, and was posthumously described by The Guardian as “one of the best known Francophone journalists of his generation, with a rare knowledge of Africa’s anti-colonial struggles and the dramas of the continent’s newly independent states.” [3] Simon Malley also was a founder of the Egyptian Communist Party. [1]

The Malleys remained in France until 1980, when President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing briefly expelled Simon Malley from the country to New York.[3] A sympathetic crew member on his airline flight did not inform U.S. authorities that Malley was on the plane and instead got him on the first plane back to Europe. The elder Malley spent eight months editing his journal in Geneva, and returned to France after Francois Mitterrand’s election.
Obama’s Anti-Semitic Middle East Advisor is A Jew

He is a traitor just like his father who worked for Nasser in Egypt.

Robert Malley attended Yale University, and was a 1984 Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where he earned a Ph.D. in political philosophy. There he wrote his doctoral thesis about Third-worldism and its decline. Malley continued writing about foreign policy, including extended commentary about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He earned a J.D. at Harvard Law School, where he met his future wife, Caroline Brown.[4] Another fellow law school student was Barack Obama. [5] In 1991-1992, Malley clerked for Supreme Court Justice Byron White, while Brown clerked for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. As of 2008, the couple has two boys, Miles and Blaise, and one daughter, Frances.

Once Obama’s alternate energy plans work and the US is weaned off Middle Eastern oil, Israel ceases to have any strategic value and becomes irrelevant anyway.

“Obama has another job for the gangs. At an appointed time (another Manufactured Crisis?) they (and others around the country perhaps) will help him create the necessary chaos and violence required to institute martial law/cessation of our gun rights.”

We don’t need a reason. I’m part of Obama’s security force, and I’m not even black. And, yes, your guns *will* be taken away. And we’re also keeping a very close eye on the traitors who voted for Bush in 2004, after it was known that he lied about Iraq and conducted an illegal war. We are in the early stages of devising a plan to punish these traitors. And you *will* be punished. It’s a new day in America.

The results of the election are less then 10-days old and it’s something everyday–a sophomoric crack at Nancy Regan, the selection of a Chief of Staff who sent a dead fish to a writer at the Washington Post who wrote an unflattering article about him, his staffers leaking the contents of confidential discussions in the Oval Office with President Bush, and now the news that Obama has greenlighted aides to have backchannel discussions with a terrorist group–months before he was elected.

WHATEVER could have lead anyone with less than a mosh-pit mentality to believe a guy like this was the answer to any question other than, “What Senator is known primarily
for one speech he gave and his two autobiographies?”

…graduates at top of law school class at Harvard and he is stupid?

O’s rank at graduation as well as his grades at Harvard and (previously) Columbia have never been made public.

Let’s try to keep this thing honest, kinda sorta.

He bloviates well enough to appeal to enough individuals who’ve themselves have been mis-eddukated within American public education.

Now they ardently defend him although they, nor anyone else, has a clue how he might govern. Maybe the promise to give them “stuff” was enough to earn their vote.

They have obviously never read Obama’s books…

O, when challenged on some statements in his books, acknowledged they are a pastiche of memory, truth & fiction. If you fell for the shtick, you probably think his womanizing, radical, and, finally, alcoholic Daddy was kind of cool, too.

Hell, the “palestinian thing” has been going on since the inception of Israel in the lat 40’s.

Arab countries have been trying to destroy the tiny, new state for the duration and a few (like Egypt & Jordan) finally gave up and made “peace”. (at least peace on paper)

As I recall, the Hamas Charter doesn’t mention Israel by name (I might be wrong) and has been dedicated from the outset that the state of Israel (aka “the zionist entity”) doesn’t even exist.

Maybe if Israel gets freed up from US “support” (a lot of good those countless Camp Davids and so forth with cretins like Arafat have done) they might finally let loose on the idiots in Gaza who, themselves, have devastated the lives of Palestinians who simply wanted a chance at peaceful, productive lives.

C-ford has been engaging in anti-Semitic innuendos on this amd other threads, creatively using and mixing the Pre-WWII slander of conflicted loyalty ( America First), the currently vogue Left attack phrase (Neo-con) and the old Soviet anti-Semitic (Golum) put down.

As John McCain said, America will not allow a second Holocaust. This is a consensus American opinion not restricted to “Neo-con” and their Christian conservative friends (the alleged “Golum”).
Sorry C-ford, maybe you can obtain consolation by visiting you friends in Gaza City.
