Mr. Besig was not totally correct in identifying the “Old” Testament with the Torah. The “Old” Testament generally refers to the whole Tanach which is the Torah, the Prophets (Samuel, Joshua, Kings, etc…) and the Writings (Psalms, Song of Songs etc…).

Historically the notion of using the words “Old” Testament and ‘New” Testament stems from the Christian orthodoxy that the “New” Testament was the new word of G-d and took primacy to the old words. In other words, the life and teachings of Jesus negated the need for a separate and holy nation with the unique role of serving G-d. This service was in accordance to His Laws as expressed in the Torah and their interpretation as orally handed down through the courts and codified in the Talmud and other judicial texts. Again, these Jewish interpretations were all based on the Torah and decisions were handed down through vigorous scholastic methods. Christians took the words of one rabbi and used them to negate the traditions as handed down from the time of Moses.

As a Jew I have one thing to comment on. It matters not to me what Christians think. So long as they believe in the One True G-d, and follow the six laws given to Noah, then gentiles are behaving in accordance to their obligations to G-d. Jews have further obligations, 613 of them, and we are required to fulfill all the laws currently possible in order for us to be in accordance with our obligation to G-d. I would prefer if Christians didn’t consider themselves as the new or completed Jews as I think it indicates a certain arrogance that one rabbi can negate G-d’s eternal laws and that gentiles are better qualified to interpret the meaning of the laws given to the Jews then the Jews are themselves. The fact is that most of the teachings that Jesus preached were present in Judea in those day for a number of generations before his birth. Rabbi Hillel, ho lived a generation before Jesus, was a prime example of a man who was accepted by orthodoxy and yet expressed what, to my mind, are more sophisticated versions of Jesus’ teachings. The one main difference between the two is that Jesus’ teaching were used to negate previous laws while Hillel was able to reconcile the law with the sentiment. The positive effects of Jesus’ teachings are that it popularized, among gentiles, the basic faith in G-d and in many ways brought the 6 Laws of Noah to common practice among most Christians. If one were to be rid of Christian supremacy (which in many Christian communities has been successfully minimized) then I think the relationship of Jew to G-d, gentile to G-d, and Jew to gentile would be very healthy and bring blessings to this world.

I have very rarely contributed to any candidate for office. Since the spittle-flecked obscene politics of destruction has been unleashed on Sarah Palin and her family I have donated in the 4 digits to Republicans. This sort of vile attack needs to be slapped down hard. There are only two ways to do that: one is to contact advertisers and donors of those who sponsor them and the other is for McCain/Palin to win with a large margin.

I have some reservations about each of them. Neither is my ideal candidate. But IMO the single most important action to take this year is to slap down the violent, censorious left so hard that for the next decade anyone even contemplating personal destruction from the right or the left will trigger an immediate immune reaction within his or her own party.

I think it is time to call the left or liberals what they really are –socialists.

From my perview – we are moving dangerously close to what Russia encountered in the early 1900s. The masses were unhappy with the Czars and the communists came along and promised them a better life while getting rid of their evil rulers. It was a populist movement that swept the communists into power. I refer to them as the non-thinking masses.

Obama promises to tax the oil companines (windfall profits) and some how the non-thinking masses think that is going to lower gas prices – someone explain to me how that works.

Obama promises tax cuts to almost all of America except the 5% who are rich and (>250,000) but the numbers do not add up. Where will the money come from for the tax given their are not enough rich to cover the cost?

Some one explain to me what Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are against eliminating the death tax but yet they are able to shelter their wealth by setting up trusts. Why didn’t they simply give their money to the government like we have to if it is such a good idea?

I just made a cross-country road trip after just having through the scary hurricane Ike week. It was a long trip, starting in the far south of Texas and ending in the far north of Arkansas. Almost 800 miles all told.

This is significant only in that for fun, I started counting political signs posted in yards along the way. I stopped counting McCain/Palin signs after seeing 40, only remarking to myself; “oh! There’s another one”. Believe me, there were a lot of them. Completely absent in this part of the world were the Obama/Biden signs.

I realize my observations do not constitute a real poll, there was nothing “scientific” about it. Texas has always been conservative, but based on what I’ve seen, I think Bill and Hilary’s home state has turned Red. Of course, no one would expect a bunch of religion and gun clinging rednecks to vote for a black man anyway.

Another thing that strikes me as odd about all the hoopla over Sarah Palin is; generally speaking Vice Presidents are invisible. Let’s face it, what did we hear from or about Dan Quail or Dick Chaney on a regular basis? Unless someone decides to attack Chaney because his daughter came out of the closet, or he has another glitch with his heart problem,,, or accidentally shoots a hunting partner. Al Gore only makes it to the news stories because of his recent excesses and idiotic rants. However, during the term of office we never see them in the news at all. A VP’s duties are rather limited to attending an occasional State funeral or making a flag showing somewhere. They are never the headline the President is. With all the media attention going to Palin, you’d think she was running for the top spot on the ticket. The last I heard, that was still John McMain.

As for Sandra Bernhard, she is just butt ugly, inside and out.

For many who used to be Jews and Christians, they have replaced their faiths have been replaced with either some variant of socialism or with atheism.

I’m an American of French Canadian ancestry. But my identity is that of an American. My ethnicity and ancestry represent my family’s history (and I have done my family’s genealogy all the way back to France). As an adult, I identify with being an American, a fortunate circumstance of my birth. Ditto for being a Roman Catholic. I may have gone through about a ten year sojourn into Liberation Theology, but ultimately I came out the other end wiser and recommitted, more or less, to traditional orthodoxy. We live in a society in which identities are fluid and based on our own decisions, not those of our parents.

Secular Jews who settled Israel and who support it did so and still do so because there are people in the modern (and had been in the not so modern world)who had and still do scapegoat Jews even right on down to Jews who no longer practice their faith. Therefore, secular Jews understood that even if they converted to Christianity under threat of extinction they were still not safe from the likes of you and your ideological forebears. The pogroms in Russia and The Final Solution drove secular Jews to establish the body of political thought called Zionism.

We should start hitting their pocket books since they think it is ok for Obama to raise the taxes on my small business! Since they think it is ok to get on television and try to sway the vote of uninformed Americans. I for one have a LONG list of ones I will be boycotting.
