Sanity Squad: The Presidents

Can you guess which President the London Examiner was referring to when it wrote that the man had “murdered the Constitution of the United States” and “overthrown all for which Washington fought and Patrick Henry spoke?” Hint: it wasn’t George Bush.

1. Benjamin Kuipers:Interestingly, England and France were on the verge of officially recognizing the Confederate States of America when Lincoln suddenly had a change of heart and decided to free the slaves in areas over which he had no authority.
The comparison with Bush is interesting and perhaps justified, though Lincoln, by being responsible for the deaths of 700,000 Americans, the defilement of the Constitution, the arrest of those in the North who dared oppose his fratricidal war, and the consolidation of our federal union into a nation-state, arguably was worse.
Bush, as Lincoln, has unconstitutionally suspended habeas corpus in some circumstances, went to war without a declaration of congress, invaded a non-beligerent foreign state, and systematically centralized power in Washington.
In truth, in “saving” the Union, Lincoln destroyed two republics: the one born in 1861, and the one born in 1789.
I find the Examiner’s comparison chilling.
Feb 21, 2007 - 12:40 pm 2. doc99:Had McClellan won the election of 1864, it’s doubtful the nation would honor McClellan’s Birthday, let alone build the McClellan Memorial.

“Bush, as Lincoln, has unconstitutionally suspended habeas corpus in some circumstances, went to war without a declaration of congress, invaded a non-beligerent foreign state, and systematically centralized power in Washington.”
If the likes of Benjamin Kuipers were around during the time of the civil war, slavery would still be a reality, and the Dems would be seeking to impeach Lincoln.
Oh wait- the Democrats back them endorsed slavery and did want to impeach Lincoln! I suppose Benjamin Kuipers antecedents would be proud. The same primitive and political intellectual DNA persists onwards. It is probably safe to say that Benjamin Kuipers would have gone into the streets to dance after lincoln was shot.
Ah, the progressive are so retro and have clearly learned absolutely nothing from history. No doubt Benjamin Kuipers is still mourning FDR’s decision to go to war against the Nazis.
Here’s a reality check. Mr Bush DID go top war with Congressional authority. The administration HAS followed the courts in their interpretation of habeus corpus.
Yes, Lincoln destroyed that wonderful way of life in the south that embraced slavery, and the Democrats, for a century afterwards did everything they could to keep segregation alive. I suspect Mr Kuipers keeps a photo of Bull Connor on his mantle.
Wake up, pipsqueak and go sit at the kiddie table. You aren’t cut our for political analysis. You are a failure as a historical revisionist, too.
Don’t feel bad. Not everyone can be a doctor, lawyer or political analyst. The world needs plumbers, septic service workers, janitors and gardeners, too- all honorable professions for which you are eminently suited.
Feb 21, 2007 - 3:06 pm 4. Gilbert Brahms:I agree with you about the denigration of the very office of the presidency. I did not like Clinton, but I never gave into vituperation and I would become angry when people on “my side” of the political spectrum did so, because, for better worse and meriting criticism, he was the president.
You might speak of a widespread neurosis, and I could not disagree, but what I see is a very frightening cultural decline, the kind that befell Rome after the death of Marcus Aurelius.
Feb 21, 2007 - 6:22 pm 5. Dmitri:Ah yes, upholding the constitution. What a funny idea? Who cares if the constitution is “murdered”?
The attack on Benjamin seems over the top, as if he is unwarranted to hold a certain opinion or else he is a ‘pipsqueak’.
An actual disagreement on the point made would be much more beneficial instead of the typical ‘attack the person’ tirade.
Feb 22, 2007 - 7:45 am 6. sharinlite:Anyone, and I mean anyone from Europe who writes, talks or performs anything about America, our politics and our values or non-values I have absolutely no use for. These “types” should pay attention to what has and is happening in their own countries. If they understood the economic and religious peril they are in they might learn a thing or two. They are, forever, blind, deaf and dumb.
Feb 22, 2007 - 9:32 am 7. sigmund, carl and alfred:Dmitri- to say that this country was ‘destroyed’ by Lincoln is what is over the top.
Post Lincoln, this nation has delivered more people from tyranny to freedom than all the other nations combined.
This type of stupidity is ever escalating.
Perhaps because FDR lied to Congress and armed Europe before we entered WWII, we ought to see the liberation of that continent from the evil of Nazi socialism as a bad thing.
Perhaps we had no right to conduct trials at Nurenburg, because American rules of evidence were not used exclusively, because French, Russian, and English laws were incorporated into the trial.
The stupidity continues. Where is the evidence the constitution has been murdered? Has this Administration failed to follow the rules and rulings of the courts?
Simply saying the constitution has been murdered gives you no credibility whatsoever. In fact, your remarks only highlight your incompetence as a thinker and irrelevance as just another half baked ideologue.
Feb 22, 2007 - 10:23 am 8. Dmitri:Please, do continue to attack others as ‘incompetent’ and ’stupid’ as this reveals that you are avoiding the issue.
Limited government as outlined in the constitution has been run over by power hungry buearucrats and corporations. Whether one’s intentions are good or bad is not the issue, the overrun of a Republic where states are supposed to decide their own fate and a limited federal government unites them with enumerated powers outlined in the constitution has contributed to our march toward democracy. The mob rule of democracy where 51% of the people control the country is not what the founders intended.
Feb 22, 2007 - 12:34 pm 9. sigmund, carl and alfred:Dimitri- to tacitly agree with a moron who says Lincoln destroyed the nation is evidence enough my remarks were accurate.
Now, if you wish to rescind your clearly idiotic remarks (no doubt made made under some kind of duress), we can pick up the conversation.
