France is toast. They are so busy being anti-American that they haven't noticed they are morphing into Frankistan. By the time they do, it will be too late to do anything rational about it. France is a generation from becoming a 3rd world country.

Any country that produces Lagrange, Euler, and Cauchy, Must have some brain power rattling around somewhere. Let's hope it manifests.

I think Sarko may end up to be the best thing to happen to France in 40 years. Give it time, give it time.

As for the Germans being "nervous", people who find themselves in an untenable situation SHOULD be nervous. We're paying Germany's defense costs, opposing us on issues of foreign policy is very shortsighted and foolish. Particularly when there is no short-term benefit to it except the ability to project adolescent peevishness.

When Sarkozy has won his French presidency I hoped that he would quickly become an European stateman with the biggest balls in Europe, and his lieutenant - Bernard Koushner would fly over the world like Gandalf on the white horse, lambasting all those abusers of human rights. Since that the Sarkozy-Koushner team is puffing the air away like an old baloon, and Sarkozy is degrading himself to the size of the clown that can be described as Sarko-The Merdo... If the French are indeed dreaming so much about military independence and their role as a counter-balance to the US, perhaps they would be courageous enough to increase their defence spending to the level of the US, or even of Israel and Singapore. It would be, for sure a proof that they are serious about their increased role as a world's force of good. The empty gestures and declarations won't cost Sarko anything nor make him many friends among thinking people... And we have to remember that they (the French) still haven't arased the stain of SHAME for their pasive stand in Rwanda tragedy...
