Ten Ways Obama Can Get a Grip

Our new president had a bad week. Here's how he might avoid letting it turn into a bad month.

The president had a rough week. He was beset by tax-cheating appointees, hobbled by an incompetent press secretary, frustrated by a messy legislative fight over his stimulus plan, and suddenly deprived of the aura of infallibility which gave him a larger-than-life political presence. So how does he get his mojo back?

It is early, very early, in his presidency so there is no need to panic. But there is reason to reassess. His personal favorability numbers are declining and his stimulus bill is becoming less popular over time. Some of this is inevitable, but there is also the sign he is losing control and losing his grip.

Nicole Wallace, former McCain campaign advisor and an authority on bad weeks, writes that Obama had a really bad one:

Team Obama has a big problem on its hands. The White House has lost control of the press narrative. No single news cycle can make or break a president’s momentum. But getting trapped under a damaging narrative can take weeks to shake off. The bad Obama narrative was summed up by Sen. Lindsey Graham today: “If this is the change we all can believe in, then Americans’ best days are behind them.”

Before a bad week turns into a bad month or a bad year, Obama and his advisors might consider some simple measures to help regain the high ground. We offer ten suggestions.

First, never, ever let Nancy Pelosi carry the ball for the administration. Her contempt for bipartisanship, political extremism, and inability to defend her own handiwork make her politically toxic. From here on out President Obama would do well to deliver the legislation he wants, and position himself as a force for moderation, not the lackey of the speaker. And he might help his image as a consensus-builder by having a “Sister Nancy” moment in which he slaps down her brand of left-wing partisanship.

Second, fire Robert Gibbs. He’s embarrassing, cringe-inducing, really. And he’s done the impossible, which is to annoy the mainstream media. Find a tax problem. Promote him. Anything. Just send him on his way.

“It is early, very early, in his presidency so there is no need to panic.”

Nothing could be further from the truth. It is definitely time to panic. Barack Obama simply does not possess the necessary tools to carry out his duties. He lacks the education and worldly experience. Obama is indeed a shallow and poorly read man. And it is too late for him to get his act together in the foreseeable future. The stressful job of president does not allow one much of an opportunity to engage in long avoided scholarship. Why should we be surprised? It was common knowledge before the election that Obama was an affirmative action candidate supported by guilt-tripped whites and embittered minorities who believed “it’s our turn.” Well, we are doomed to endure four years of mediocre leadership. May God help us.

All pretty good advice, especially one through six. He’s particularly vulnerable to losing ground from the Reagan vs. Carter problem. Obama won but not in the landslide that much the media pretends occurred. And the race with McCain actually was not all that bitter and bile-filled, so Obama began with a much stronger sense from swing voters and moderate Republicans and Democrats — the center — that he might be OK and should be given a chance. The almost instantaneous descent into partisanship — brought on by the Pelosi-spawned “stimulus package” could become disater for him.

I hope not. He still has time to recoup.

David Thomson’s flogging the “white guilt” dead horse again, I see. You know, David, I thought of you when Michael Steele was named the RNC chairman.

I thought for sure the “Barack the Magic Negro” had it in the bag. But apparently Democrats aren’t the only political faction in this country in thrall to “white guilt.”

There’s plenty of reason to panic. He’s just not up to the job, aside from his absolutely lunatic ideas.

there is also the sign he is losing control and losing his grip.

I think the Democrats were particularly fond of the word “erratic”, if I recall. Precedent BHO’s actions aren’t even sensible enough to call erratic. We can only hope that he will get his footing and be merely erratic.

Well … actually, I’m hoping the SCOTUS is watching this disaster very closely and might find the guts to hear one of those eligibility cases finally. (That’s only because I’ve given up on ever hoping to see any investigation into the BHO campaign’s finance fraud, even though it is open and shut).

The best predictor of future performance is past performance.
many of us were pretty sure he would suck when he had to be a leader rather than a show-pony with a microphone. And it turns out that, indeed, his leadership ability sucks.
It’s not going to change.
Tempting as it is to take a grim delight out of his incompetence (the Germans call it “schadenfreude”), this is bigger than partisan games. The problem is that he’s running the country. There are real consequences and real risks with having such an incompetent twit in charge.

Feb 7, 2009 - 3:38 am 6. Mongoose:

I do not know why you say it is a bad week.

Seems like his hideous agenda is humming along and meeting with great success.

He will get his stimulus bill. In 2010 he will have a trillion dollars to buy votes and corrupt the electoral system. It will also crash the dollar and take out America as a world power. It also completely end runs national debate on his socialist agenda in health care, education, energy, etc. It will destroy the wealth of the middle class and make them supine slaves, it will turn the nation into a 3rd world country. This is a big win not a loss. There is Tarp adn Auto bailout next week, so you can expect another trillion dollar looting quite soon. The Dollar cannot take a 20% increase of national debt in one month alone.

Charges against the Cole bomber dropped. The PR around this suggests that he has coopted the “families” around this and 911. This signals a success in shifting the WOT back to a “legal response”, and buys time for his Muslim brethren. Another bug win

SCHIPS is passed, this is a stealth move toward Socialized Medicine. Raises taxes too.

Passed this new labor law with removes time limits on “equal work” laws. This is another stab at capitalism and the Middle class, particularly small business. It is also a noce present for his tort lawyer backers.

Got through more union freindy exceutive orders.

Got confirmed absurdly corrupt appointments. Did it laughingly and in the open. This has now inured the public to the point that they accept it as common place.. This will deeply damage the morality of the electorate in the end.

Appointed the most corrupt and anti-capitalistic “business council in the history of the country (well, at least since FDR).

Has managed to completely dodge who is responsible for this financial mess, or even the question of whether or not it was manufactured. The miscreants are still sitting in power on the hill and on Wall Street. They are almost to a soul Democrats.

Bad week? hardly.

It does not matter if he appears frayed around the edges a bit to the public or not:

1) Obama is just a front man, the Communist are in power now and they can do what thy please. We have put in power a large groups of villains, not just one man. If he were to leave tomorrow, we would stil have the exact same problems on our hands

2) they have so much money now that they do not have to worry about listening to the public. They can do as they please, and they will just buy the next election. we are headed for a corrupt, one party, quasi-socialist state like Mexico under the PRI. We will be just as poor as they are.

3) the scales have now tipped so that there are more takers than givers. This has already happened in Dem controlled states like California, or Michigan. They are not going back to what they once were, at least not through the traditional (and legal) political processes. California is not going to be “reformed”, it will just get worse.

Look at how impoverished these places are. This is coming to all of us now.

3) The media will find a way to win them back

So Obama and the Democrats War against America, War Against Capitalism, War Agaisnt the Middle Class and the War Against the Good are well on their ways to final victories for these vermin.

We need to stop kidding ourselves. Obama is one of the worse things to ever happen to this country. Perhaps the worst.

To think of all those brave men and women that stood up against tyranny, particularly the ones that stood up against the collectivist hordes of the last century, and then to see a silent coup by the worst sort of socialist and communist jackals is one of the saddest things I have ever seen.

Bad week, indeed. Good week for him, Bad week for us.

Oh, and i forget, Obama is directly taking over the Census Bureau. What totally open corruption. What a open contempt for this country.

Feb 7, 2009 - 3:50 am 8. formwiz:

For him, points 1 and 3 – 8 are probably close to impossible; he is, after all, a Red Diaper baby from the Chicago machine. He can’t do 9 because he’s too vain and 10 is out because of that resume thing people were warned about.

His biggest problem is that 2 will not save the economy from the stimulus.

Feb 7, 2009 - 3:51 am 9. Mongoose:

David the mistake is thinking it is mediocre, It is excellent. Excellent Socialist tyranny.

Nor is it mediocre if considered from a more traditional point of view. It is incompetent.

Wait until we get Weimer Republic levels of inflation. Wait until they sacrifice Israel.

Feb 7, 2009 - 3:55 am 10. Mongoose:

Oh, and the stimulus bill in intentionally hostile to people of faith. I should say people of the Christian or Jewish faith. No doubt believers in Marx and Islam will be treated quite well. More attacks on all that is Good or Decent.

When you see Obama trying to pull stunts like taking control of the Census (taking oversight from the Commerce Department and placing it under his administrations), it’s time to panic. That’s dictatorial behavior, worthy of Chavez and Mugabe and reeks of corruption.

Feb 7, 2009 - 4:22 am 13. Bob:

The Obama Presidency reminds me of the title of a Stuart Woods’ book: “Worst Fears Realized.” Here’s a guy who criticized run-away spending, saying he’d go through the budget “line by line.” Then he lets Nancy Pelosi write an unlimited spending bill and tries to scare Congress into passing it by saying the economic crisis will turn to catastrophe if we don’t spend our grandchildren’s money to make ourselves rich. He’s promising to shut Guantanamo with no plan for relocation of the terrorists there and has had the trial against the leader of the U.S. Cole bombing stopped and the charges dropped. He promised no lobbyists – except for those he wants. His team can’t vet his appointments worth a damn. If this guy is competent at anything, he sure is hiding it well so far.

Feb 7, 2009 - 4:59 am 16. SAF:

It is scary to think that he might be as bad as his opponents on the right portrayed him in the campaign. I never thought he would be a good president and I thought he would be Jimmy Carter II.

I am not yet convinced he is out of control although this article and some of the blogs make good points.

But for sure there is nothing new here. Democrats run everything and we will have higher spending and higher taxes.

Feb 7, 2009 - 5:11 am 17. Bilgeman:

#2 John Burke:

“The almost instantaneous descent into partisanship — brought on by the Pelosi-spawned “stimulus package” could become disater for him. ”

That nails it.

The problem for the O-bots is that Dear Nancy rather LIKES being Speaker, and the Democrats have only two short years to turn this economy around, close Gitmo, get out of Iraq, and win in Afghanistan before the mid-terms heave into view.

Since a concrete and definitive delivery is only possible regarding closing Gitmo and absquatulating from Iraq,(and both of those portend rich and deep veins of domestic political mud with which to sully Democrat incumbents with), “500 Million Jobs Lost Every Month Nancy” NUST deliver the Federal “Bag o’ Swag” to her political sponsors in the hope of buying their loyalties for the next cycle.

And folks are starting to puke already over the size and contents of her grocery bag…

Obama, of course, will still be Preznit no matter what future lies in store for “Goodfella” Pelosi so he’s likely taking a longer view of things.

Obama can survive losing some seats in the mid-terms, but it’s something he doesn’t want to see develop into a trend, because hard on the heels of 2010 is the 2012 Primaries, and at the rate he’s pissing off that crew of mouth-breathing tranzi-prog-eco-secular humanists, he might just find that they declare him a “non-person” at that point.

I mean, whither Ned Lamont? Cindy Sheehan?
Not even a non-denominational “Winter Holiday” card on recycled paper for THOSE two erstwhile darlings, right?

I almost pity the fellow who claims to have been born in Hawaii…he has to kiss Nancy’s ass, but how hard and how long to do so is a vital calculus with respect to his own political future.

One hopes Jimmeh Cawtuh will leave his “Habitat for Humanity” toolbelt as a legacy to Brother Barak as a fitting gift from one Democratic “short-timer” to another.

Methinks the high point of The One’s “mojo” was in November of 2008…it’s all downhill from there, now.

He’s tried moving to the center, and pissed off the DUmmies and KosKidz and HuffPo peons, and now his grown-up adult allies in office are deserting him, and this two weeks into his Administration.

This guy’s a one-termer…unless he morphs into something gob-smackingly spectacular very soon, or something VERY BAD happens to the country, also quite soon,(while he can still credibly blame it on BushHitlerHalliCheneyRoveCo).

Feb 7, 2009 - 5:13 am 18. LynnS:

The Real West Wing is having problems wrapping things up in a neat sound byte. Solving the problems in the world around a crackling fire-place with the self proclaimed best minds in the world is proving to be more complicated than expected. After throwing a few bones at the hungry left, and throwing a few bones at the blood-thirsty Middle East, the Administration is quite irritated that they cannot spend some much needed time patting each other on the back and preparing for the next episode of The Real West Wing.

This guy will be the first ‘Cliffs Notes’ President in our history. After all, this is his first real job. I remember my first management position. Thought I knew it all, until the ‘old guys’ let me swim in my own s—t.
I’m afraid he is even more naive than the Peanut Farmer and we are still paying for mistakes that treasonous idiot made.

Feb 7, 2009 - 5:44 am 21. LeighB:

I have a different take–Pelosi is a problem but the problem is the new President is not in charge. If Rahmbo is busy hiding the birth certificate as some suggest, then hide it already and get back to your real job, figuring out how the Executive Branch should deal with Congress.

My guess? He will turn out to be Jimmy Carter II, without the good works (like Habitat) afterwards.

I am trying but I cannot muster up any enthusiasm for this guy. He expects too much to be given to him and gives little in return. Except interviews.

JENNIFER,I truly hate to inform you-Obamaskank is a true IDIOT, this loser doesnt have thr brains reqired to lead. Adolph Hitler had similair character flaws. The reason there are so many tax cheats with his appointments is simple-this idiot is listening to any voice that tells him what he wants to hear. The character of such individuals(or more precisely, the lack of character) is that they think of themselves much more highly than anyone with a firm grasp on reality does. Take Tom the Dasshole for instance. Can some firm please tell me where paying big $ to this idiot improves business? Or are they just trying to get Fed contracts? I spent 25 yrs in business and went out of my way to AVOID any govt contracts and all the baloney that comes with them. As the old Rush parody says”he’ll promise you steak, and give you baloney”.

Feb 7, 2009 - 6:55 am 29. Nine-of-Diamonds:

I remember reading an article by a columnist who had interviewed some of Teleprompter Boy’s former coworkers (remember that job he lied about in his “autobiography”? Corner office, three-piece suit, secretary, etc?) According to one female employee, O! was a brittle, thin-skinned whiner who pretended to know more than he did and consequently found himself in over his head. Repeatedly. And this was coming from a liberal woman who wished him well, and was planning on voting for him.

In my opinion, articles like Ms Rubin’s are well-intentioned but nothing more than wishful thinking. The Messiah has shown a consistent inability to acknowledge his own faults, preferring instead to blame his misfortunes on racism/Rush Limbaugh/whatever. The slobbery media coverage he received during the race only confirmed his high opinion of himself. Now we’re to believe that he will acknowledge that he’s already stumbling, solicit suggestions from both sides, and change his course? Not a chance.

Feb 7, 2009 - 7:02 am 30. David Thomson:

Barack Obama has already proven his contempt for the voting rights of all Americans. We should never forget that his presidential campaign disabled the security software on its website so that it could collect illegal donations. Manipulating the census for political advantage will be a ho-hum event. Obama will not think twice about it.

Feb 7, 2009 - 7:03 am 31. john galtis the man:

Feb 7, 2009 - 7:03 am 32. David M. in Eurabia (formerly Europe):

I have, time and time again, been critical of our politicians in Europe as gutless, PC, incompetent and worthless. By what I see in the new president and his administration in the USA I dare to say that you are in a worse position than Europe. How could you sell your democracy and the future of your children to a charlatan who has no sense for the USA? Merkel of Germany, Sarkozy of France, Berlusconi of Italy and Rasmussen of Denmark are pro-America but I doubt if your president has any sense or love for America. We have no First Amendment in Europe -and it is getting worse- but I say what I like.

That’s an outstanding list, but the only item Obama is likely to heed is #2. The Gibbs countdown clock has already started.

Those of a certain age will remember when Jimmuh Cartuh was president we all kept waiting for the real Carter to show himself.
We soon realized that what we were seeing was, in fact, the real man.
Same with Obama. He’s a vicious fanatic who is hell bent on wrecking this country. Remember his own words during the campaign:
“This is a great country. Now let’s change it.” And that’s a verbatim, folks.
Wake up. It isn’t going to get any better, only worse.

Feb 7, 2009 - 7:23 am 36. cfbleachers:

Jennifer, item by item why virtually NONE of the suggestions will be followed:

1)Like it or not, Pelosi is the voice of American Leftism. SHE is the embodiment of Koz Kidz and Huffington Post. The spittle-flecked rage, the bitchy bitterness, the eye-bulging hatred, the out of control venom, the recklessness and willingness to destroy anything and everything, the tantrums and hissy fits. Party first, fellow travelers second, EuroSocialists third, sworn enemies fourth…middle America last.

She is arrogant, abusive, dictatorial, imperious, duplicitous, smug, pedantic, and she has an agenda. President Obama dare not cross her, hell hath no fury as a leftist crossed. (see Lieberman and Billary).

She is the poster child for the Democracy-hating wing of the Democratic Party. One third Cruella De Vil, one third Josef Stalin, one third Count Dracula…the reason for the bowing, scraping, apologizing in point #5 is because the America loathing leftists would have us apologizing all day, every day for our very existence. When you are a committed leftist, looking at America is an exercise in fending off revulsion. The Countess Dracula exists on sucking the blood out of the masses, in the guise of statist “protectionism”, all the while creating a dictatorial class and making fur coats out of 101 hides.

President Obama bends to their whim and will, because he saw as the beneficiary of their deeds what happens if you stand up to them. So have the Republicans, moderates, centrists, conservatives, faith-based folks, libertarians, and Blue Dogs.

Since they own the information stream, there is no lie, there is no slander, there is no distortion that they won’t produce and mass disseminate in order to crush you. They are at war with our democratic republic. It is open and obvious, but it is undeclared. Operating at once in stealth and denial, but with increasing boldness and brash defiance of all of our hard fought victories to date. They are political terrorists, hellbent on tearing down our system of government and replacing it with their particularly vile brand of angry leftism.

Once we recognize and acknowledge the battle lines drawn here…all other issues pale in comparison.

Nothing….absolutely nothing…on the list after this, can be made better or changed if we don’t align in resistance and engage the battle on this front. Period.

Feb 7, 2009 - 7:24 am 37. TexEd:

That supposes that Lord Obama wants to get a grip. He doesn’t! His job is to destroy the middle class in America, nothing else. The inflation that will come after the stimulus will mostly do that. In fact, by the time Obama is trough, no one including blacks will ever trust a black man again.
Although, you are right about Gibbs.

Feb 7, 2009 - 7:33 am 38. ricpic:

Most of the suggestions Miss Rubin makes would be eminently doable if, if Obama were open minded; but he’s not, he’s a close minded ideologue.

Feb 7, 2009 - 7:47 am 39. cfbleachers:

2) Gibbs. I happen to find this fascinating. The Obama administration knows precisely what the entrenched media is and Gibbs is the playing the flute to the dancing cobra. The Obama dons are betting heavily that he is an “untouchable”.

First, they paved they way for his exaltation, they created the mythology, their legs tingled…so they can’t very well unring that bell. Second, they are overwhelmingly white. Criticism…even mildly rebuking critique…will not be easy to sell to an African-American electorate who feel they have been unfairly picked on for centuries. The uneasy alliance between white leftists and black America does not portend fealty from the latter. This was seen in the vote on gay marriage, but it exists elsewhere as well.

3)Jennifer, he wants to be neither. He wants the power of Idi Amin, with the persona of Gandhi. If he wins the battle in #2 above, and he has Pelosi carry his water for the imposition of dictatorial statism, he can achieve his goal. Absolute power, wrapped in a soothing message.

4)Geithner, Rangel, Dodd, Barney Frank, Jim Johnson, Franklin Raines….the story is buried. There is no story. Had a REPUBLICAN administration bubbled up this noxious brew….THEN…there would have been breathless lead in after lead in, each and every day. The entrenched media picks and chooses what to report, how hard to dig, what to bury, what to distort, what to half-truth, what to hide. Right now, they are both pulling on the same end of the rope. They don’t yet recognize whether the Obama dons are making a noose out of their end, however. So, for the time being…the entrenched media is doing what they always do, creating political cover for “their” side of the aisle.

5)Blaming America and apologizing for her very existence is the raison d’ etre for leftism. This hasn’t stopped for 40 years, there is nothing to suggest it will stop now. In fact, it is rampant, widespread and metastasized. They aren’t siding with the enemy…they ARE the enemy.

6) Free trade with democracies is not a high priority. Establishing relationships with leftist regimes is much higher on the list. Fellow travelers first. Cuba, Venezuela, …as well as EuroSocialists and African Socialists are on the agenda. Creating statism requires a destruction of capitalism and then an array of comrades to One World Socialize the new system. Busting the economy requires the expenditure in bankruptcy of all our reserves. Trillions of dollars in socialized handouts, creating a “need” for “help” from our “former enemies”. When you are down and out, taking “help” is an easier sell.

7)Tax cuts in bankruptcy are essentially band-aids for a severed limb. First you give out trillions to those on the dole, then you give THEM “tax cuts”…while breaking the kneecaps of the “rich” to pay for it all. Pretty much, the only money left…is the worthless paper being minted by the government. The SKIMULUS package hides the pea, while the shell game insists that we have a “rough road” ahead…but the “RICH” MUST PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE.

Demonize the “rich” and tell them that THEY are keeping the “workers” down. Make the masses suffer enough to want to revolt. Offer “government salvation”. Voila!

8) The Politboro is made up of senator-like club members. Talent or skills have nothing to do with it. Adherence to party wishes is the only element on the resume necessary.

9)A personal seal, a private emblem… there is no “too much” exposure, never has been…throughout this meteroric rise and concurrent exaltation. Caesar as rock star.

10)When the trappings of power are more important than the responsibilities of power, when the agenda is not to “do” something but to “be” something….you can get tired of waiting.

President Obama has been peevish and easily irritated by anyone who dares to take an opposing stand. He expects fealty from the entrenched media and it appears will demand it. They are used to demanding, not bowing and cowering. One can only hope this fight continues. And, I’m hoping he crushes them. Killing off his own sychophants and supplicants, making them clownish and irrelevant. Gibbs, the bumbling Inspector Clousseau, is the front man in a battle of wills. He doesn’t care what they think, he is impervious to their demands. The STATE owns the information stream, not the converse. They may wake up and realize that they have sown the seeds of their own irrelevance.

One other bit to wonder about: Where is all of Obama’s support? Where are George Soros, Warren Buffett, the actor’s gallery, et al, at nauseam?

If you’ll all recall, these people were assuring us that Obama was the leader of the future, the best choice for the country, and would take us to a better place.

You would at least expect them to continue this support for their hero in these trying times. He certainly needs it.

But we hear nothing. There is a vacuum. I wonder, Mr. Buffett, with due respect to your business acumen, where is your support for this stimulus bill? I wonder, Hollywood, if this is the Hope and Change you campaigned for?

Someone please call Matt Damon and ask whether he’s happy with the way things are going. Put it on all the major networks in prime-time. See where public opinion goes from there.

I really think that the man is clinically insane. Everyday dawns a new and unthinkable atrocity from this charlatan. I harbor serious doubts that America can recover from the damage this clown is sowing. I have come to the conclusion that seeing him in a clear and realistic light is a genetic predisposition. Some of us “get it” and have from the start of the whole nightmare he has become. Some of us just don’t get it and never will. Sadder still, are those who would continue to vote for him even if he murdered Michelle and the girls in their beds and burned the white house down. God help us and hope saner voices prevail starting in 2010 when we usher the 3 republican traitors out

“A bad week” —- Is what newly elected RNC Chair, Michael Steele is getting ready to walk into. See today’s Washington Post….The conservative media knows that Obama’s a prodigy. EVERY conservative “critique”, “advise”, “recommendation”, etc. just seems to acknowledge that with it’s petty criticism. Let’s see:
1. Target date to close Gimo and explains to victims “why”.
2. Establishing Foreign Policy foundation.
3. Announces Economic Advisory Board.
4. Signs 2 laws that were vetoed by Bush.
5. Provides “smack down” to GOP for slapping his hand when he extended it in bipartisan effort.
6. Sheppards economic aid through Senate which puts downpayment on Energy grid, infastructure, aid for pre school AND middle class tax relief. These are ALL campaign promises.

Yes, it’s another bad week —- in pajamasland.

@Mongoose
Please find my expression of appreciation for your clear understanding of the quandary we are now fully in. Most people – like Mongoose and myself – who received forced reeducation regiment during our life under Bolshevik totalitarianism we are about 30-50 years ahead mentally of the average Americans.
You will now undergo several decade of brainwashing: apparently the Stalinist will be the first to rule based on the personality cult of the Obamistas. Purges will follow, Obama will be denounced as too bourgeois and deposed. Next will be the Kucinichistas and the Maoist or Trockyst like Bill Ayers.
When everything and everybody will have destroyed in about 15-20 years Marxism will be discarded and whatever left of the US can start anew.

Please follow the birth, progress and death of Marxism by perusing the pages of History in Eastern Europe and Russia. You will have a better understanding of what is going on.

You are now on the same track: your historical uniqueness is passé, it’s gone with the Kenyan Messiah and it will not return ever.

it will be one disaster after another for America with this narcissistic, empty-suited loser in the Whitehouse. Ms Rubin’s suggestions are excellent, but Democrats aren’t interested in governing the nation, they are only interested in securing total control over America and her citizens, entrenching themselvers so deeply we will never succeed in extricating them. They will attempt to do this by:

Nationalizing banks and major industries
Offering illegal aliens an easy path to citizenship
Forcing Americans into dependence through oppressive taxation while eliminating private healthcare and pensions
Confiscation of private investment accounts
Silencing of dissenting voices via re-imposition of the “Fairness Doctrine”
Imposing ever-restrictive environmental regulations on businesses
Confiscating all firearms, beginning with handguns and semi-automatic weapons, proceding to hunting rifles and shotguns
Negotiating disarmament treaties with despotic/hostile foreign nations, which will effectively lead to unilateral American disarmament
Eliminating free speech on moral issues and removing any mention of God from public buildings, currency and legal documents

The Amerikkans are firmly in control and don’t plan on relinquishing power anytime soon. Look no further than California and our major cities for what we can all expect.

First, every one of them is proof positive of the truism passed to me by my grandfather and to him by his, that while first rate men employ only other first raters, the second rate hire only the fifth!

Second every one reminds us that, as the pretender has never had an actual job, has never been responsible to a profit and has never met a payroll — nor has he the executive experience and building of trust among an executive team from which to select those to whom to entrust the day-to-day. Having had to throw his mentors Frank Marshall Davis, Saul Alinsky, “the reverend” Wright and Bill Ayres under the bus — he simply doesn’t know anyone.

And then there is the simple fact that the loathsome and fearsome Cli’ton Crime family still own and control thousands of stolen FBI files and will, until they’re off the planet, manipulate and negatively influence every and will pretty-much absolutely control this “administration!”

The president and his wife, Michelle, took daughters Malia and Sasha to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performance on Friday night at the Kennedy Center.

Can it be true?

Why bother with the advice that he won’t read anyway? In some respects, it’s more fun to watch him have bad weeks and bad months. Although I don’t really want to live with the consequences of his policies, having bad weeks and months (and years) might just slow down their implementation a bit (if we’re lucky). Maybe by then more of the electorate will come to its senses and 1). elect a congress that can rein in Obama, or 2). begin preparing to throw him out of office after four years, like they did to Jimmy Carter.

Feb 7, 2009 - 12:20 pm 64. WhereisJohnGalt?:

Mongoose and cfbleachers: your words are chilling…

It seems the only hope is to vote out all incumbents. States must vote for term limits for congress.

They have created the country club and we have allowed it by condoning the gerrymandering and incumbent-dominant voting. Over 90% of incumbents are voted back into office, regardless of their records, their integrity, and their work habits. These are the things we the people need to hold our employees, the congress, to.

The only opportunity to stop this train wreck is to systematically vote those who perpetuate this cycle, and this is (almost) everyone in congress, out of office. Since it might be a nightmare to agree on the criteria of who could stay, all must go.

I’ll go with William F. Buckley: I would rather choose the first 535 names in the phone book than the group of thugs who “represent” us today. They could not do a worse job and my bet is there would significantly fewer with tax or legal issues.

There is no future in giving up. We must recognize what is at stake and take full advantage of the rules our system offers us. The people have the power, if they can be made to see what the consequences of paying more attention to American Idol is than to American Democracy.

Campaign finance records list the expense as having been for “catering/web services.” Turner filed papers to dissolve the company 11 months before the payment was received.

Feb 7, 2009 - 12:38 pm 67. Ken Hahn:

Obama has one simple problem. Until the inauguration he never face a tough question, other than Joe the plumber’s. He doesn’t know how to handle it. His vision is that of a god-emperor, not subject to criticism. During the last two years, the media obliged. The lapdogs created the Obama legend. They polished it and protected it. They promoted it. Now that they are faced with being held responsible, the worship is beginning to crack. “Journalists” are beginning to ask some questions. The softballs are getting harder. The leg tingle may be gone.

Obama’s vanity is his dominant characteristic. He sees himself as the personification of the American dream and Horatio Alger myth. No question is allowed. The media’s instinct for self preservation and self promotion is now setting in. Gibbs wouldn’t be a problem if he didn’t have to tie himself in knots trying to reconcile Obama’s god complex with a panicking press. Pelosi wouldn’t be a problem if Obama could conceive of a Democratic leader not blinded by his brilliance. Bill Clinton made it through eight years on smoke and mirrors. Obama just has the mirror.

After 100 days, if Obama has steered the ship of state into a rock, and the USA has sunk, then Congress will answer the nation in the next Congressional election in 2 years.

Until then, Americans should encourage Mr. Obama to succeed in his job as the President of the United States of America.

An emotionally appealing idea, and one worth implementing for several reasons. But changing the personnel will do little; we have had many, many change over the past 100 years and the situation continues to deteriorate, with only minor blips in improvement.

Change the ideas of the culture that keeps on producing such people, and allowing them to get away with incrementally destroying freedom. Then we’ll be getting somewhere.

I know Obama is weak on American history (I wonder if he finally realizes there are 50 states not 53) but someone needs to explain to him the roles of the executive and legislative branches of our government. He again repeated that he won the election, but all that means is he gets to run the executive branch. The republicans in the senate who won their races get to vote their mind. Obama somehow seems to think because he won his election he gets to have everyone bow down to him and do whatever he wants.

President Bush spent 8 years dealing with Democrats who fought everything he tried to do.

Until Obama figures this out he will sound like a child who is pouting because he did not get an ice cream cone, rather than a President of the USA.

I have NO idea what the commenters here are all tripped-out about. Nothing even vaguely “socialist” has been proposed yet, and barely anything with a whiff of radicalism. And, anyway, the whole debate over the stimulus package is artificial, since neither spending nor tax cuts is ultimately going to change the fact that globalization (an artifact of capitalism) is about to drive the US standard of living down to that of Greece…assuming the greed and criminality (two other artifacts of capitalism) of the world’s financial players doesn’t reset the whole world to 1877.

Jennifer Rubin,

In my view, Obama is more annoying than a bunch of mosquitoes at a lawn party.

And rather than giving him some rosiny tips, I’d rather you spread literary oil all over his politcal highbar act until he loses his reality grip completely.

You see, the brown eyed handsome man totally lost me when he showed what a bad winner he is by screaming to the world last week, “I won, it’s my way or the highway.” The Dems are notoriously sore losers; remember they started bashing Bush from day one.

Niggardly Nancy parrtoted the “I won, you lost” line a day later. Incidentally, until she gets a pie in the face, I won’t get a good night’s sleep.

But they’re not just bad sports, they’re bad for the union.

They’re greedy, power-driven, pukes with a marked propensity for socialism, selfishness and sloth.

They hate traditional America with the same venal, vindictive, vitriolic, vehemence that Bill Ayers and Jeramy Wright demonstrate every time they publicly stomp on the American flag like fascist, Islamo-terrorists who would cut your children’s throats without a second thought.

So, Jennifer, please, don’t give Obama any sensible ideas. One day he might be just crazy enough to follow them. rachel

Everybody put down the red or blue kool-aid, step back, and evaluate his first two weeks rationally: Two foreign policy blunders (resulting in Iran mocking us). Three cabinet appointees who never made it to the first meeting. Calling out a talk radio personality (who, though popular, is beneath the direct attention of a sitting president). Instilling fear in the populace to garner support for a spending bill which will empirically fail to solve anything. He closes Gitmo, and in his presser turns sheepishly to one of his advisors to clarify a significant point.

Reality always finds its way to the fore. No amount of Hollywood sets, teleprompters, fawning media, can hide inexperience. Eventually it comes out. It took two lousy weeks for the crack to appear in the windshield. The scariest part is I cannot recall anything this man has EVER said that indicated a firm grasp of concrete issues. Economics – no. Foreign policy – no. Constitutional law – no.
When he speaks, I look carefully at the TV to see if I can spot the strings extending upwards from his arms and legs. Of course, my TV isn’t 1080p – oh, well, I am sure they are there.

You are like so many people, people who hear phrases and don’t know what they mean. They then ascribe their own meaning to it and it leads to all kinds of further misunderstanding. When it comes to the Presidency, society needs you to be more knowledgable.

Ms. Rubin, your outlook enunciated here is also naive. You make all these suggestions for a reasonable President to do. You’re assuming he’s a reasonable guy. He’s not. He’s President WYSIWYG. What You See Is What You Get. This is how he intends to govern. It is how he told us he would govern. Why are you confused about this?

He is NOT a Centrist. He is a far, far-left guy. This is Liberalism. You now get to see their political agenda in action. This is true Leftism. The juveniles have taken over. How can you not see it? This is exactly what the Pubs have warned you about, but you keep expecting it to change. It won’t. This is it, in all its ugly nakedness. Wake up. Open your eyes.

“greed and criminality (two other artifacts of capitalism”

Clearly, you know exactly nothing whatever about capitalism which, in the context of a Constitutional Republic (rapidly being destroyed by your Progressive friends), has at its root the protection of individual rights, in particular the protection of life, liberty, and property, i.e. it is entirely against criminality, in theory and to a refreshing degree in history compared to what came before and after.

If you want to see criminality on the widest possible scale, study the Soviet Union, Communist China, or any other socialist regime.

Sheesh. Would that we were anywhere near 1877, which was utopia (politically) compared to today.

Ignorance. Ignorance of history, economics, and supported by the wholesale purveying of a rash of false alternatives mixed with red herrings and snarky lies. That’s all I ever hear from the Left. Can’t you guys, who are supposed to be intellectuals, come up with a decent argument once in a while?

Sheesh. I could find 10 real problems with capitalism in America in the past 200 years for every one that yahoos like you guys invent out of your hatred for anyone who makes money.

Here’s how bad this week was for Obama. I just read on realclearpolitics.com an article entitled “That didn’t take long.” It was written by Maureen Dowd and was critical! (Gasp!) Well, she spun it by saying that he was quicker to recognize his mistakes and apologize than Bush ever was, but still, even someone like her could recognize the downhill momentum.

Everyone KNEW (those who voted for or not for him) that he didn’t have a strong experience, yet he got elected. So the expectations differ from those of more experienced office holders.

The Presidency is not just ONE man. It’s a team with a leader. Decisions can be implemented and then modified. Especially financial or political.

Take the bailout. You can implement some decisions now, then TWEAK them as needed. Nobody is perfect. Bush did it: “Let’s go to war” (bad decision), then tweak it (oops, he didn’t). The process can be called OPTIMIZING. I don’t know if Obama is going to follow this process, but he should. Not an easy task, it’s hard work. But, of course, the best alternative is DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

“Nationalizing banks and major industries”

I don’t think so

“Offering illegal aliens an easy path to citizenship”

What’s wrong with that?

“Forcing Americans into dependence through oppressive taxation while eliminating private healthcare and pensions”

That’s quite exaggerated

“Confiscation of private investment accounts”

I don’t think so

“Silencing of dissenting voices via re-imposition of the “Fairness Doctrine””

“In an August 13, 2008, telephone poll released by Scott Rasmussen, 47% of 1,000 likely voters supported a government requirement that broadcasters offer equal amounts of liberal and conservative commentary, while 39% opposed such a requirement. In the same poll, 57% opposed and 31% favored requiring Internet web sites and bloggers that offer political commentary to present opposing points of view. By a margin of 71%-20% the respondents agreed that it is “possible for just about any political view to be heard in today’s media” (including the Internet, newspapers, cable TV and satellite radio), but only half the sample said they had followed recent news stories about the Fairness Doctrine closely.”

“Imposing ever-restrictive environmental regulations on businesses”

Green is good

“Confiscating all firearms, beginning with handguns and semi-automatic weapons, proceding to hunting rifles and shotguns”

That would be good but if only applied to criminals.

“Negotiating disarmament treaties with despotic/hostile foreign nations, which will effectively lead to unilateral American disarmament”

Not if done right

“Eliminating free speech on moral issues and removing any mention of God from public buildings, currency and legal documents”

Separation of church and State, two different animals

“The Amerikkans are firmly in control and don’t plan on relinquishing power anytime soon. Look no further than California and our major cities for what we can all expect.”

Read again: “major cities”, why would that be?

This is what is truly frightening.

1000 “likely voters” in a random telephone poll.

A “likely voter” can be termed someone who answers “Yes” when asked if they are planning to vote. The respondent can be a minor, an illegal alien or a convicted felon…it doesn’t matter-they can all be “likely voters”.

Now OF these “likely voters” only 500 or so admitted to following the issue “closely”, (whatever the definition of “closely” is that was used by the pollsters).

May we infer that the 470 “likely voters” who favored this clearly unconstitutional abridgment of the Freedom of Speech were the ones who admitted that they weren’t paying attention?

I’m not exactly certain whether this poll was being cited by vivo in suppport or in opposition to this monstrous “Fairness Doctrine”.

Nearly half of these goobers would toss out our Bill of Rights without even reading the thing, (and certainly not thinking about what it might mean to do so), because some voice on the telephone and a politician or two suggested that it would be “fair”.

God help us.

I would support a law that banned any polling on political matters to be conducted solely on verifiably registered voters.
They might still be dumber than a bag of hammers, but at least we’d have some idea of the opinions of people who were at least eligible to have a voice in the matter.

When they bringup the “Fairness Doctrine” I will be all for it. I think the Republicans in Congress should insist that journalism schools admit an equal number of conservatives and liberals every year so as to provide the public with a fair and balanced media and all points of view, in other words affirmative action for conservatives. I am sure BO would sign it into law. Hey, he’s the first affirmative action president.

This has to be the height of wishful thinking and rationalization. Sounds like you just realized that he is not the grand poobah after all. As far as the expectations go, I thought that “those who voted for” him expected him to save America from herself, to be the great “I can fix it all” president. Well – that did not last long. You call him the leader of a team. He can’t even control the main members of his party.

“Neither, just showing the statistics. Yes, statistics can be misleading. But they are a starting point.”

It’s the “destination” someone has in mind from that “starting point” that gives me the heebie-jeebies.

The Administration has usurped control of the Census from the Commerce Department, so if they’ve a mind to, they can fudge the census numbers to ensure that their political allies get a disproportionate share of the next reapportionment of Congressional representation.

If this Congress passes this “Fairness Doctrine”, this will effectively end any realistic chance of broadcasting any opposing views that point out what is going to happen when the Congresses of 2011-2020 are installed.

Boy…y’know, if Bush had tried floating these two pieces of legislation, the core of those who support the fellow who claims he was born in Hawaii would have had a collective aneurysm.

I don’t know why I should be surprised, a President who refuses to definitively put to rest questions about whether he is Constitutionally qualified to hold the office wants an illegitimate and bogus Congress to play with.

The reassertion of State Sovereignty now percolating through the various legislatures should give any Federal officeholder very deep misgivings.

It could be interpreted as the first step toward another series of Secessions…

“The American public gives President Barack Obama a strong 67% approval rating for the way in which he is handling the government’s efforts to pass an economic stimulus bill, while the Democrats and, in particular, the Republicans in Congress receive much lower approval ratings of 48% and 31%, respectively…The data in particular show the sharp divide between the public’s views of how Obama has handled efforts to pass a stimulus bill and its views of how the Republicans have handled this — a divide that quantitatively produces a 36-point approval gap.”

I just want to add for the sake of those who believe Pelosi is pulling one over one BO [poor prez] couldn’t be farther from the truth. Both Pelosi and BO are working the plan together… the stimulus is intentional so that in 2010 they have reason to put away with capitalism and bring in communism. Partly because the stimulus is actually a bailout. BO owes ACORN some money for all the hard work they put out there to deceive the youth into voting for BO [that was 66% youth]. BO owes international companies for fronting him the cash to TAKE OVER the White House – that’s right, I said TAKE OVER, and for buying out the mainstream media to cover only BO and not the republican side. He also owes special interest organizations like the MoveOn.org and the gay movements for blocking bloggers from getting the truth out to the public via net. Obama will be a president who campaigns for his next term from day one of his first term. He is already preparing for the next election, and will take whatever actions necessary to facilitate his victory in 2012. The entire four years of this presidency will be gathered under the principles of campaigning not of governing. To govern implies obedience to the constitution and the Bill of Rights. Obama has already made clear, in radio address and other venues that the constitution is flawed. Governance is a regulative function, not a constituting function. Obama wants to constitute a new America, not govern the America that is given to him. Change in a negative sense means getting rid of all the things that prevent America from fulfilling its constitution as given by the Founding fathers. Change in the Obama plan is in its positive sense -the ‘constitution’ of a whole other rulebook. Crisis is the perfect way as Rahm observes when he publicly said that under stress and in crisis people will agree to all kinds of things they’d never agree to otherwise. THe simple fact is there is no time for Obama to both get us to do things we would never do otherwise AND, at the same time, do the numbers as listed in this article. It is not an accident or simply a symptom of a bumbling inexperieneced new president that we are looking at. Obama could do all the things stated above. He is doing something else, the logic of which we should examine, and this ’something else’ will make perfect sense once we figure out what exactly he is doing, that is, once we realize he is not fixing the economy: instead he is constituting a whole new world.
