Seems to me that reducing CO2 emissions was one of the significant goals of the enviro movement. Electric from the grid via the power plants must be more efficient on some sort of scale so plugging in a car rather than a gasoline engine must be more energy efficient.
In the end, there will be NO commercially viable alternative fuel source or resource, for at least twenty years, so every little bit helps & especially if it helps to undermine the taxation oriented cap & trade scam (scheme) that congress is looking at. You know, the one the Europeans have found does not work, is rife with abuse & fraud, and has only made UN plans to tax the world look good!

There is possibly another alternative to this Tesla car, it is a company called Phoenix Motorcars in Ontario, California. The website is worth a look (just google phoenix motorcars). As far as the recharge power required, look at the FedEx facility in Oakland California to see they produce about 80% of the power needed for their warehouse (lots of electric motors to drive the conveyor belts) from the solar panels on the roof. Umm, the bay area is a foggy place too!

The idea of electric cars or rather plug in hybrids is to enable people to charge the batteries at night when the grid is fairly free and the tariffs are lowest. In fact, all hybrid car makers like Toyota (Prius), Honda, GM and others are eyeing this low cost option for power through PEHVs.

Peak electricity time is generally 2 – 6 pm.
The thought is that you’ll plug in your car after work or sometime during the evening. With little or no effort this could be done at a non-peak time.

On a hot summer’s day the nation’s electric grid is already overstretched how much worse will it be when thousands perhaps millions of these autos are plugged into a particular grid? Instead of a gas crisis we will have an electricity crisis. We will be experiencing blackouts and brownouts much more often. I hope the manufacturers of plug in cars have plans involving our electric companies. I hope the planning involved here is not as myopic as our ethanol planning. I’m afraid there’s no plan involved at all with either ethanol or electricity. It’s just hit and miss. No planning, no coordination let alone political ramifications. Just wait when till our snail’s paced politicians get their grimy hands on this.
