The All-American Gang War

A new documentary alternately glorifies and excuses violent gang behavior in Los Angeles.

Crips and Bloods: Made in America asks a complicated question: how did L.A.’s notoriously bloody gang war begin and what’s fueling it today?

Director and co-writer Stacy Peralta, who previously gave us the adrenalized surfing documentary Riding Giants, can’t leave his liberal talking points aside long enough to give audiences any real answers.

Instead, he blames hateful/ignorant/bigoted America at every turn. Meanwhile, the thugs are excused from even microscopic blame for their killings.

It’s a neat trick, but it’s a deeply dishonest one. And didn’t anyone realize the film, in limited release across the country, is coming out during the age of Obama?

It’s all a shame, since the subject matter cries out for a credible documentary. The lives being lost in the City of Angels could use an honest voice to at least point survivors in the right direction.

Crips and Bloods begins in the late 1950s/early 1960s, a time when entrenched racism meant young blacks couldn’t enter the Boy Scouts, job opportunities were few, and bigoted housing legislation ensured they remained segregated from cozy white neighborhoods.

Some blacks decided to make their own version of the Boy Scouts, although these groups tended to involve fisticuffs, not merit badges.

“In those days, we gave an appointment for an ass whupping,” one former group member wistfully recalls.

So far, Peralta is on sound footing, and he makes a persuasive case that all of the aforementioned played a role in the 1965 Watts riots.

Once peace was restored, the black power movement resumed in earnest. And that, we’re told, is why we have Crips and Bloods stalking California till this very day.

Huh?

The documentary doesn’t even try to tie the two cultural movements together. How a violent revolution against oppression became an excuse for blacks to kill other blacks with abandon isn’t even marginally sketched out.

We do hear from a black survivor from the ’60s, who argues something akin to the fact that the oppressor, aka “the Man,” made blacks begin oppressing each other.

I hope Venus and Serena Williams made at least a brief appearance as two people who were able to have other choices.

I don’t have the answer to this situation and want a better future for all Americans. The best I’ve been able to figure out in this life is to invest in things that others cannot (easily) take from me–education, health, and a willingness to work hard.

The Economist the other day looked at “Respect Killings” and Going Dumb in Oakland. Its ugly to say the least and its also clear the forces driving these killings have very little to do with race or the “establishment” .

It’s all about defining people down, to refine the picture they have of themselves (and their potentials) to a point where they believe they have no options. In animals it’s called “learned Helplessness” in people? It’s manufactured oppression (manufactured from inside themselves). Painting gangs as “Robin Hoods” and the communities they prey on as “helpless victims” defines the strategy of the dominant racial arsonists. What have we gained from this strategy? Generational welfare recipients, a too high percentage of Black men incarcerated (with grounds) because there is no hope, no chance, save through the racial arsonist, (and probably not even then) . . . so, options? Remain a victim, or become a victimizer. One political party pays no attention, the other? The keys to it’s power is through the learned helplessness of a people, to throw bones of hope to the impoverished, and (at the end of the day) do nothing, and lay blame at the feet of the “oppressor”. It is an interesting turnabout that the party of “segregation” is now the party of “diversity” and “inclusion”, and it’s leader uses the verbiage of the arsonist, “I was always on your side, I’m on your side now, but things might get worse anyway . . .” (I paraphrase); = there is no strength, no hope, save through me, and probably none anyway . . . because of those oppressors (the WHites, the Rich, the Jews).

So, it all Whitey fault. What a surprise.

Apr 15, 2009 - 5:52 am 5. uburoisc:

As a pretty good respresentative for Whitey in Los Angeles, I, like most sensible people living in the very large metropolis (whitey and many non-whiteys alike), live as far away from the daily gang battles of the Crips and Bloods as possible. I do not go anywhere near those neighborhoods, and have no reason to go anywhere near them. If anything remotely resembling a gang member appears in my ‘hood, I am on my cell phone calling the po-po telling them a sketchy young man is wandering aimlessly around a good neighborhood. If I see them in cars, I report them as drunk driving.

I do not care how many lies the leftist idiots tell about the gangs in LA or how sympatheticly they want to portray them; they are cold-blooded killers, morons, and their entire culture is a reprehensible travesty from top (Maxine Waters) to bottom (Tookie Williams, may he rot in hell). I see no hope whatsoever for the gangbangers, only containment, the tyranny of distance, and the very high probability that they will kill each other within a 5-block radius long before they get the 100 or more blocks to arrive at my doorstep.

Frankly, nothing reinforces my contempt for the Left quite like watching them deal with the gangs in LA; it’s like watching a hippie reason with a grizzly bear, it always ends badly, but as farce, it’s hard to beat. Oh, and make no mistake, all the biggest leftist a**holes in LA live as far away from the gangs as possible, and would never send their kids to any school that gangsters attend; those hypocrites know the truth, they’re just too afraid to say it for fear of being called the second worst thing in LA, next to “homophobe”.

I had heard this film attacks the issue from a “liberal” perspective – this from a left-leaning film critique. But I had no idea the film would be so morally bankrupt.

The innocents caught in the gang crossfire deserve better than this.

The ancient Romans really knew how to handle violent people, put them into an arena, give them their weapons, and sell tickets to watch them kill each other. It not only cuts down on crime, it saves the money spent housing them, and it raises money by the tickets sold. Win, win, win.

Apr 15, 2009 - 8:52 am 8. NahnCee:

No mention of Mexicans killing blacks. I wonder in today’s LA if you compared the murder rate between Crips and Bloods vs. blacks and browns, what would it be. LAPD doesn’t put stat’s like that out, since Chief Bratton declares there is no genocide going on in South LA.

Oh well, none of them are taxpayers or voters so no one really cares enough to spend money or time on cleaning it up.

The elite on the left are racist. They survive by making blacks of our nation victims. Feed them the victim mentality and then tell them that left can save them. They show the white right as the reason for them being a victim. In reality the right wants people of all races to achieve success, because we know that in their success we succeed. Obama is the puppet of the elite left.

Read George Guilder’s “Men and Marriage”. Breakdown of the family is primarily to blame and the increase in out-of-wedlock births (i.e. disassociation of men from their children) is the biggest indicator in predicting violence and anti-social behavior. It is a more accurate predictor than race, poverty level or geographical location. Note currently that rate is 40% overall and 72% for blacks. Haven’t read the book in a while but it’s a good summary of the problem illustrating importance of marriage (historically and globally) in integrating men into society, overcoming tendency of single men to operate with a pack mentality.

I have a nephew who’s an LA police officer and sees the brown on black and the illegal alien gang crime as much more severe problems now than black on black.

” a time when entrenched racism meant young blacks couldn’t enter the Boy Scouts”

What rubbish! Even in the Jim Crow South, young blacks could join the Scouts- in segregated troops, to be sure, but the notion that Scouting wasn’t available is a(nother) left-wing lie.

LA is nothing but gang land. There are gangs of every sort, I can’t even begin to count the number of black gangs, hispanic gangs, Korean gangs, Russian gangs, Iranian gangs and I’m sure I’m leaving out others. A teacher I know had a group of Korean students who as a gang activity murdered a whole family. He had kids in his classroom with loaded guns, one was even pointed at him. He described a couple of his students who he knew committed murder. One of his students was wanted by police. The police showed up as a SWAT unit with a helicopter flying overhead. The other was actively selling narcotics on campus.

This town used to be a joy to live in, a playground for adults. Now it has one of the highest crime rates in the country. The law protects the felons, protects their rights. Normal people don’t enjoy the same protection. Police are not out to protect you, only to respond to crime.
They are outnumbered and outgunned by the gangsters of this city, 10,000 police, over 130,000 gang members. As a private citizen it is against the law to protect yourself or your property. Normal people have no rights in this town, yet we pay the taxes that help support the system that keeps the status quo. We have two huge sections of the city that are run by the leftist. Santa Monica is referred to as the People’s Republic of Santa Monica. West Los Angeles (the Gay Republic of Los Angeles) is run by a group that completely abuses property owners unless of course you’re gay yourself. In LA itself it seems that the average dog running on the streets has more rights than a person. Homeless are given rights, they can set up camp on the street right in front of your house; and, you can’t do a thing about it. Los Angeles itself is overrun by illegal aliens. They have their own gangs such as MS13. I can go on and on.

Please excuse my rave.

In 1990s, I once befriended a young man who was a gang member for one of Detroit’s notorious gangs, one of the violent kind. He told me about a brief history of Crips and Bloods, gang signs and the likes so I can get a better idea of them. He gave me something revealing: Sicilian Jews originated from Chicago and New York gangs migrated to southern California for warmer climate and lesser law’n'order between 1930s and 1950s, employed poor blacks to run gang errands in those decades, since they did not really trust the Latinos. Those poor blacks learned some tricks and trades from Sicilian Jewish gangs. He shown me an infamous gang sign: the split star of David (hold up two hands, middle fingers connect as top tip, index fingers connect as a top line, thumbs connect on bottom line, with ring/little fingers connect as bottom tip; once you done that, separate the hands while maintaining the fingers poise). He was saying that Jewish gangs in Los Angeles had a lot of influences on the disenfranchised blacks, as the civil rights and black power movements were going forward in the 1960s. That was it from him, pretty much unofficial history stuff.

..Its just karma from your kind screwing up wanton other Metro areas. Or all the “beaner-hopping” that goes down east of the Mississipi.

Apr 16, 2009 - 11:43 am 17. Oscar the Grump:

Bob
Everybody knows that all the Jews originated in Sicily, and they are famous for creatiing the Italian Mafia in Sicily of course. Those same Jews were involved in disenfranchisement of the black, of course. We created slavery, we created discrimination, Jim Crow laws after all we’re all lawyers etc.

If you ever care to look at the newsreals of the 60’s you’ll see it was the Jews who were marching with (not against) the blacks. We were involved in voter registration, housing reform and other things that helped in the civil rights movement. The NAACP was organized by Jews for the blacks.

The late 60’s saw a change in the nature of the black movement from civil rights to black power. The Angela Davis types rewrote history and that new history is part of the new black anti-Semitism.

I don’t care what that individual told you. I lived that era and I remember the turnaround. I remember blacks who I had shared everything with warning me not to come into their neighborhood any more because it was dangerous. They simply couldn’t protect me.

The Bloods and the Crips were formed originally for political reasons, a black power movement. It degenerated into street gangs. Gang signs can be interpreted differently by different gangs. One’s star of David can easily be explained as two pyramids( one upside down). Pyramids of course being a black thing (out of Africa) as opposed to the Star of
David. (Believe me this was one explanation I got.)

Please let me know if tagging was a Jewish thing too?

Is right there have been some murders committed in the area Hispanic on Black. One promising young man from LA high was minding his own business and was blown away for no reason.

I never said #13 or others were incorrect. I’m just saying that there have been instances blacks have hopped on Mexicans for no other reason than being Mexican, particularly the further east (and non-Florida south) you go. I’ve lived it at the other end here in Chicago. I’ve heard about so many “Paleta” men and others being killed or severly beat down by black assailants in the black or mixed areas, many times without robbery being a motive. Those anecdotes passed from relatives living here to would be migrants living in the ranchos, more than primary Mexican culture or white peer pressure (face it, even the bosses are rarely white on the job site), probably fuels Mexican racism toward blacks. Who knows, in so many years some weird group (escapees from Eurabia?, China, sub-sahara Africans) could be mowing down the Amnesty II generation.

when i lived in l.a., i played rock and roll. i had a friend who was in a band called agro-negro and the white power trio. it was an inter racial band. the rhythm section was made up of three white dudes, and a black dreadlock. agro -negro was the front man. he was six one and black, with a tall mohawk. this may seem strange, but the point i’m making is this. agro would hang out at the store i worked at, and guys from compton would come in, and try to lay a victim bit on him, and he would say, “i grew up there, and all that crap(he used stronger words) is in your mind, i got the hell out, and am living the way i want to” . i don’t know if it helped them, but for me,hearing him say that it was the start of my way out of a personal hell. so thanks agro., that was sure all-american.

The funny thing about where this is going is the lack of mentioning the Crip on Crip violence that took place. The whole L.A. gang war wasn’t Crip vs Blood. How about the Rollin’ 60s vs the Eight Trey Gangstas? No mention of that I see. As a matter of fact, the entire gang culture is rooted in the drug trade and control of drug markets. How about what’s going on now in L.A. with the black on brown violence? When you have the Mexican Mafia, known as La eMe, telling surrogates which include the likes of The Avenues, White Fence, Big Hazard, 18th Street, MS-13 and any other Hispanic street gang that’s sworn allegiance to La eMe to go out and kill blacks. There have been reports in neighborhoods like Harbor Gateway of black people being harassed and even killed by Sureno gang members. Things like “NK” have been tagged by their houses and the like.

The Avenues, probably the most violent Hispanic gang in L.A. has had members brought up on racial killing chares, but the bigger picture points to La eMe telling these guys, “do it or you’re getting green lighted (that means killed) for not following orders or paying drug taxes.

The Star of David in the gang world represents the Gangster Disciples, who are spread out across the Midwest but based in Chicago. And black gangs weren’t formed for political reasons, as a matter of fact most gangs weren’t formed for political reason other than a neighborhood thing. Ever heard of the term “crip walking?” Most gang members don’t care about politics, other than making their money selling drugs, taking over territory and evading law enforcement. I suggest you do some serious reading on the subject of gangs and various L.A, Chicago, Memphis, New York and other large metro gangs. Here’s a list for you…Vice Lords, Tiny Rascal Gangsters, Nuestra Familia, Latin Kings, Menace of Destruction, Gotti Boyz, Fresno Bulldogs, White Fence, Texas Syndicate, the Maravillas, The Avenues, 18th Street and a host of others.

RE: Boy Scouts

“in the late 1950s/early 1960s, a time when entrenched racism meant young blacks couldn’t enter the Boy Scouts”

The Boy Scouts were segregated in many parts of the country, and racial segregation ended on a state-by-state basis over a period of decades. If there ever was a time when blacks were banned from the organization I am unaware of it. I would like to see documentation. The documentary’s assertion shold not be taken at face value.

When I joined the Boy Scouts in the early 1960s there were black scouts and adult leaders in my part of Pennsylvania.

Not just the gangs in CA, but all over the US should be attacked with a fast company of Marines using Sea Stallions, full gear, and face paint. They are part of the enemy’s of this country, and as such should be dealt with using force. Let’s see who holds their low pants wearing, drug dealing, water.

I am serious. They declared war on society first.
