The Impossible Obama Dream

The flesh-and-blood Barack Obama can't possibly live up to the expectations his campaign created.

What more can he do after November 4?  Obama, a black man, will soon be the most powerful person in the world. What so many wished him has come to pass. The symbol has been planted. That which he was called to do — by the people, (by God?) — is now a reality. What more can he be in the real world of politics, by definition a vile form of mental sport, without detracting from that pure, elevated image in which his brilliant campaign manager David Axelrod fashioned him?

Just reflect on the full weight of expectation — hope and change of every size and shape — and one understands that no human could ever deliver this. Anyone who pretends to provide unlimited change is bound to disappoint the disparate groups that helped him to power. Bush, that wretched, cursed, hapless Bush, the most undervalued man on the planet, may well serve as a handy all-round excuse for a while, but that defense will soon wear thin: the president will have to make choices, and when he makes choices Obama will have to select preferences and so alienate interest groups.

No political act Obama and his team can devise can ever eclipse the historic moment of his election.   This creates a stirring paradox of the Obama Phenomenon: Obama’s triumph is not the beginning of a new chapter, it’s the beginning of the end of the myth that made his triumph possible.

The Obama that won the election is not made of flesh and blood. He’s a myth. He doesn’t sweat, he never raises his voice, there are no sins and no remorse. No one knows who he is exactly. He’s not white, yet not really black either. He’s a devout but no ordinary Christian, yet he has an African Arabic name — Barack (which means ‘blessed’, like the Hebrew Baruch). And no criticism ever leaves a stain. Neither does he contradict himself when he contradicts himself, because everything he says is true, even though much of what he says seems contradictory. Even the rumors about where he was born — some fanatical anti-Obamists claim it was Nairobi not Hawaii — and his links with criminals and radical left-wing activists seem not to detract, but to reinforce the mysterious aura that envelops him. He is the man we were waiting for; he says so himself. He will bring change, and with it salvation.

So?

He will perform no better and no worse than what one would expect of someone who chose as his associates the likes of Ayers, Wright and Rezko, and who voted for infanticide 4 times.

Sorry, I hate KoolAide.

$600,000,000 is a huge debt to repay. That’s what the people who backed Obama payed to get him elected – and they are going to demand their money’s worth. The unions gave $250,000,000 to save their jobs and influence.
MoveOn.org gave $88,000,000 to lose in Iraq and jail President Bush. Planned Parenthoodlums gave
millions to preserve the abortion industryl The
SameSex lobby gave millions to overturn The Defense of Marriage Act. It’s time to collect.

Well, I for one can’t wait until he changes coal into food, water into wine;bring in an era of evrlasting peace, and makes everyone equally gifted, talented, and beautiful. How do I know he’s going to all this? The voices in my head told me so. Sicerely, An Obamacrat.

Nov 17, 2008 - 10:18 am 6. momof3:

What I don’t get, is how he can be so pro-abortion and be as race-obsessed as he is. Blacks compromise by FAR the largest percentage of both abortion-getters and multiple abortion-getters. Isn’t that a white conspiracy to eliminate black people? Should a commision study it? Pay reparations to abortion-seekers?

This is going to be the worst, least-satisfying I Told You So in history, because it’s going to really harm America for decades. We’ll all pay for the anti-religion lefters getting their religion fix this way.

The Obama painted here is a myth espoused by the right wing. The left has a far more concrete program they want to enact. Obama will please some but not others, just as any President. Imputing the myth of perfection to Obama’s supporters is just another of the many errors made by the right wing.

Oh you, Leon de Winter, of little faith. Not only have you underestimated the power of words, of imagery, and charisma, but you grossly overestimate the modern American’s desire for the stifling drudgery of reality. Our education system and popular media for over 40 years now, have systematically and inexorably weaned us from that addiction. We are ready to mke the daring cosmic leap over to a new ‘reality,” one that we can create ourselves and recreate the world around us, magically making the bad world around us go away.

Even America’s most popular preacher tells us now, “Just think good things!”

Ms Attitude:

I cannot answer for everyone who voted for Obama, just as you cannot answer for everyone who voted for McCain. I do think that the people who voted for Obama were not happy with the way things are in the US today and thought that McCain was too tied to the policies that got us here. Not many people dig down into policies; so many make more superficial judgments that may still reflect a genuine desire for change. We will cetainly have change with Obama, but it will be impossible to enact everyone wishes.

13. Robert Hurley: I agree that we will have change. I went to his website and he has a lot of general goals with no real information about how he plans to achieve them. I understand some voters not wanting the same policies as we’ve had under Bush because everything about him has been demonized by the far left and the media. I also don’t agree with all of the Bush policies but at the same time I could see his goals and how he set about to reach them. You do understand why I, and many others, are a little weary? We can’t even really look at his past and see what he stands for. All we have to go on is his associates. I really do hope and pray that he does an excellent job with our country. I love this country as I’m sure you do too.

He can live up too the expectations. Obama will define the expectations. He will reframe them so they are low-all the while saying that in this economic environment, they are high. His followers will eat and believe the pablum. They will be easy to live up to.

It seems that right now that all that this sight has to offer is sour grapes over being out slicked this time around. Sorry, I knew that it was bound to happen since I said time and time again that the American public has never progressed past high school when it comes to electing people. It is strictly a popularity contest with the candidates telling people all kinds of crap just to get elected and then reality sets in and things aren’t so fun anymore. Do you really believe that lunch is going to be extended to two hours? Come on people. We need to find our slick messiah, so we can win the contest next time. Until the public wakes up and votes issues vice who is better looking, we will continue to have dumbasses in the Congress and White House.

Yep, Because the right wing was totes the ones having children singing ultra-creepy songs about how awesome Obama is. Because the right wing was totes the ones who had a bunch of celebs singing “O-bama, O-bama, O-bama” like a bunch of creepy-arse cult members. Because the right wing was totes the ones who spent more time destroying Joe the Plumber and trying to intimidate Sarah Palin. Nov 17, 2008 - 1:29 pm 24. Alice Finkel:

Obama only has to deliver to the power brokers who got him the job: the government worker and teachers unions, the radical left environmentalists, the radical left revolutionaries, the big organised thugger unions, and the big affirmative action power brokers. All special interests who would like to carve up the Constitution into a Jack o lantern pop-up.

In other words, all Obama has to do is to screw up the economy, rule of law, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, right to bear arms etc beyond ever going back.

America’s freedoms piss a lot of powerful people off! Obama means to soothe their nerves. Freedom through slavery. It’s only change. Soon all you will have left is hope.

Nov 17, 2008 - 1:36 pm 25. Tom H:

How about writing something on the fact that he isn’t legally black or eligible for affirmative action preferences – he’s 6.25% black, 40% ARAB, and the balance white and etc, so in reality he is our first Arab President. Nothing wrong with that as long as we’re being honest.

Nov 17, 2008 - 2:02 pm 26. Jeff Carter:

Honestly. Now that Obama has won, he knows he has to govern. He knows he did not get a mandate. Rahm shows that he is smart. That was a great pick. They know what is at stake, and the gravitas of entering the office has come upon him.

Clinton screwed up his first 100 days. Bush had a decent first hundred-given a rough election. Reagan had a rough first two years!

This economic debacle is going to limit how much he can expand government. And even a liberal knows at a certain point, all the government spending will amount to nothing. Even Charlie Tax Wrangler is proposing a drop in corporate tax rates. He knows the drop will cause an increase in economic activity, and hopefully will make Democrats look better. If they have trouble in the next two years, they may lose a lot of seats in the House, and the Senate may swing back (provided Republicans have the correct candidates, and good ideas).

I don’t agree with Obama’s policies, his politics, but he is affable, and yes he is intelligent. No one gets to the Oval Office being a dummy.

Nov 17, 2008 - 2:03 pm 27. Susan Says:

Loving the last paragraph of the article…”"If the Obama myth was a real legend, he would somehow disappear during his first night in the White House, leaving the world in profound confusion and desperately longing for his return. “” If only it were that easy and it were all but a dream. Unfortunately we’re going to be faced with reality come January and whatever havoc he can wreak in 4 years yet to come.

Robert Hurley wrote; “The left has a far more concrete program they want to enact”.

The word “enact” is the one that troubles me. In my experience on planet earth, I’ve seen many laws “enacted”, and very few repealed. Once a law is on the books,,, it seems to be there forever.

Kinda like a tax voters pass to build a road or a bridge, long after the road is completed, the tax is still with us. The same thing happens when we agree to tax ourselves to build a new school or a new court house, or any other new public improvement. That is why I will never vote for a tax,,, a bond issue perhaps if the civic need is truly there, but never a tax.

Of course, you did a good job at making an argument that underestimates the intelligence of most people, even the ones without college degrees. I have an idea, you should write a book about “The Conspiracy Theory”. Oh, forgot, it has already been written. Do you tell fortunes? It seems that you are able to foresee things that have not even happened. Oh, I know, if history repeats itself with whoever, then, your prediction is going to happen. Two words, GROW UP!

I think the beginning will be great for Obama voters. He will turn the ship left and they will cheer. He will countermand drilling, wire tapping and shut down Guantanamo. He will open up dialog with the Iranians. He’ll raise taxes appoint liberal judges and get them vetted. Cheered on by the press it will be a thing of beauty.

The disappointment will come when America becomes a worse place because of it. And then we will have several years of blaming it on Bush. So Obama supporter disappointment will take quite a while to set in. A year or so at least unless a blunder so big is made even the press can’t hide it.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for the Obama folks to be disappointed. It won’t be quick. They have too much vested in this.

This HopeAndChangely Obamaphoria® is all great fun and games until someone loses an eye.

When reality starts to sink in — tens of thousands of layoffs nationwide; the DOW drifting down to 5-6000; gas back up to $4/gal.; AARP members with their entire retirement accounts wiped clean; inflation begins to become a factor, which it inevitably will at the rate we’re bailing out… everything (health care ins. companies sure to be next); even ONE terrorist attack by al Qaeda to prove they’re not beaten; Iran hits our troops in Iraq with a Russian missile / tactical nuke we didn’t even know they had — when that stuff starts happening things are going to get ugly.

And there’s nothing so ugly as a former idol worshiper, betrayed by their idol, staring at a bunch of adults saying, “I told you so”.

Why anyone would expect a politician to help them is beyond me. Help your self! In the Bush “worst economy ever” years, I raised my salary over 300% and during Obama’s 4 or 8 or whatever many years I will probably raise it again another 300%. Nothing any politician or political party can do for you equals what you can do for yourself if you put down the remote, put away the stupid Obama pom-poms and start applying yourself. It is pathetic to see grown men and women acting the way Obama’s supporters have acted, and certainly isn’t befitting a country of free people.

“The Obama painted here is a myth espoused by the right wing.”

You can’t be serious. Oprah Winfrey introduced him by referring to him as “The One.” And, as far as I know, she’s no right winger. Spike Lee said time will be known as Before Obama and After Obama. Louis Farrakhan said he’s the only one that could save the world. Andrew Young predicted the stock market would begin to heal within a week of Obama’s election to the presidency. And, let’s not even get into what Michelle has said about her husband. This myth of Obama came from not just his supporters, but from Obama himself.

Nov 17, 2008 - 5:12 pm 46. Rachel Peepers:

If people’s expectation (created by all the Obama happy talk), doesn’t equal the realization (what actually happens in the Obama administration)you fall apart, the wheels come off, you lose big the next time around.

Which is exactly what’s going to happen in 2012, to a lesser extent in 2010.

It’s like the first Bush saying,”No new taxes” and reneiging on the promise.

In 2012, the Democrats may not even win Illinois.

And no amount of press, elite media or TV show bias will save them.

This year, a little over half of the American people were duped by Obama, but by 2012, the entire Democratic Party will be doomed.

Hey Jeff Carter: Well said.

Republicans made a mistake making a public spectacle of Bill Clinton’s dalliance. A reprimand would have been enough. The left took it out on George Bush, even to the point of doing their best to cause an America to lose a war. Both sides should settle down and give this kid a chance. He’s smart, a little cocky, and he seems like he’s having fun. That sounds like a recipe for success. It’s going to be very fun to see what he does. Let’s not try to destroy this guy like we did to the last two. State your case, offer advice, and point out errors, but whatever he chooses to do, make it work – because he’s an American President, and America MUST SUCCEED.

I stand firmly in the ranks of President-elect Obama’s loyal opposition. We give proper respect to the office even if we have deep reservations about the man. Conservatives would better serve the republic by resisting the easy temptation to mock and ridicule our newly elected leader. The electorate has spoken, and be it ever so bitter, perhaps even foolish, we must accept the decision. Yes, I know, Mr. Obama’s past associations and ideological principles are cause for worry. But I ask my conservative brothers and sisters to take the high road in opposition. We must stand firm on matters of policy and principle.

Lo there, do I see the highground clearly! The flag of liberty is set atop a hill! Lo there, do I see a republic protected still by a rampart known as the rule of law! Lo there, do I see the line of my people back to the Founding Fathers. They do speak to me. They bid me protect the principles of liberty writ large on a sacred document known as the U.S. Constitution. A republic will stand only so long as the people defend their rights and prerogatives under the law. Do I make myself clear?

Barack Obama is my president. I anticipate that I will oppose his every policy, even as I HOPE he will travel the road of wisdom in pursuit of national interests over ideological tomfoolery. Mr. Obama has with me a clean slate. I hope things CHANGE for the better under his leadership. I rather doubt it, but I won’t take the easy cheap shots against his persona. I believe in an American republic. We have survived poor leaders and bad times. And we will again. God bless Barack Obama, and GOD SAVE the AMERICAN REPUBLIC!

It isn’t the Right that will be after Obama with daggers drawn (we don’t want his promises to come true, so a failure will make us happy) The Left, every little faction and flaky sub-party that has projected their desires onto his blank slate, will. They are the ones that will feel let down. The way I see it Obama has been running a ponzie scheme on all the Hopers and Changers, letting them think he has promised to fulfill their uttermost desires, when all he promised to do was take their vote. His biggest question is who to dissappoint first and how bad, then work your way down the line saying,”Look they sacrificed some of their dream so, as a good little Socialist, you must now sacrifice some of yours” For his sake I hope he starts with the ones least inclined to break eggs (or legs).

And probably better than some ignorant crackers who babbel about culture of life while planning yet another war for the wrong reasons.

Those would be the wars that liberated 58 million people and destroyed al Qaeda. Of course if you have no use for the culture of life and liberty Obama is your man. He’s in way over his head.

Robert,

I’m just a college freshman so when you say my views are distorted, I take it to heart. I know not everything I saw is as sharp as your stuff, but please don’t become a downer to me to the point I don’t make posts cause people make fun of them. If you’re going to tell me I have a distorted view of the world, giving examples gives me the opportunity to evaluate you criticizm and work on my weaknesses.
Regards,
Rachel

“when you say my views are distorted, I take it to heart”

don’t. You can’t win that game. If you’re Left, the right think you’re wrong and vice versa.

As a general rule, ignore statements of position, either in the blog world or in the ‘real’ world.
“I think Obama is great.” “I think he sucks.”
“China is a threat.” “China is not a threat.” “Your world view is wrong.” etc.

these statements are just meaningless because they come with no explanation of why those things might be right or wrong. The crazy thing is that I could say anything at all, give no reasoned arguments or explanations, and still get people nodding and looking thoughtful.

Here you have a bunch of people who liked your stuff, and one anonymous person who declares, without giving any reasons at all, “your world view is distorted,” and yet incredibly, you pay attention to that statement.

Rachel, you’re out there in blogland, your views can be viewed anywhere in the world. Every single time you take a position (no matter how correct it is), someone, somewhere, will say that you are wrong. If they give no reasons for saying that, ignore them. And besides, even if you are wrong, it’s good to latch onto an idea, explore it, expand it, and put it out there. Test it in the marketplace of ideas. You’re privileged to have a wide and largely receptive audience to do that with.

why don’t we get back to the previous subject you brought up, which is that the myth around zerobama was created by the right?

We wrote many examples to deny your stupid statement. Why don’t you get back to us about it? oh yeah, because you realized that you wrote just a lot of bull**** as usual.

So chris matthews, ophra, farrakhan are people of the right?

Please, we need our daily laugh at the obamatrons

Rachael;

You’ve received some good advice here from daddy dave. Unlike me, who always plants tongue firmly in cheek and applies very little forethought to posting here, you demonstrate a willingness to weigh other opinions before typing. I think that’s a good thing. Do not change that healthy attitude.

The unpleasant truth is that the election is over,,, our side lost. The conservative in me is saddened. I believe the American voting public was mislead and misguided by a biased media. I believe the voting public was flat out lied to on regular basis by Obama/Biden, and worse than that; the media cover-up was blatant. I’m unsure of why McCain refused to use the nails provided by Rev. Wright and others to crucify Obama when he had the chance. I suspect it was because McCain would have willingly walked barefoot over live coals rather than be tarred with the broad brush of racism, he displayed honor, integrity, and poise above and beyond. But that’s past history now.

Our job now, as part of the conservative base, is to be as vigilant as ever to the creeping disaster of incipient socialism being sold as balm to the sleeping uneducated masses as good governance. We’ll survive this, we always do.

Very well said. You’re absolutely right; such stratospheric expectations are bound to come crashing to Earth sooner or later.

Since many conservatives in America are Christians, I think it’s important to consider what a Christian conservative response should be to Obama’s followers when he fails to meet their expectations. If you’re interested (enter shameless self promotion), I wrote a little blurb (very brief) here: http://dontdrinkthekingswine.com/2008/11/05/opportunity-through-difficulty/

I’m interested to read others’ take on this, if anyone knows of other articles or op-eds. Thanks!

Actually, I believe what I heard Michelle say about her husband. This was well before the primaries, but she said in an interview that her husband was just a man, and couldn’t solve every ill, and people should not believe that of him. She quite frankly sounded rather desparaging, like she was warning us in a polite way. I took her to heart. I had liked the man when he was first introduced to us nationally. Then I found out about who he really was.

I agree the right screwed up with CLinton. No one really cared what he did, is what they didn’t seem to get, and the money spent REALLY ticked off the public. I was a Clinton voter, and never voted for Bush. I voted McCain though, and am heading more right as the left just gets wackier and wackier. I have high hopes for 2010 and 2012.

A related issue is Obama’s membership in Generation Jones (between the Boomers and Generation X). I’ve seen numerous very credible experts emphatically insist that Obama is part of GenJones; if Obama’s generational identity is of interest to you, click this link…it goes to a page filled with lots of articles and videos of many famous people discussing Obama’s identity as a GenJoneser, and the many implications of this for his Presidency: http://www.generationjones.com/2008election.html

The fact Obama an empty suit, full of good intent but void of good ideas, was obvious from the beginning. But not nearly as obvious as the MSM now spinning the meme of an American public bound to hold very low expectations.

My concern is not that Obama will prove to be an utter failure. I believe that is almost a given.

My concern is will a dumb American public even notice and continue to be fooled by cheap cliches, false promises, and a complete lack of sound judgment?

Daniel Patrick Moynihan correctly called it years ago “Defining Deviancy Down.” Once you start down that slope, it is a long climb back to the top.

Miss Attitude,

SAF,

John B.

Daddy,

Thanks all for your suggestions. I try to listen and learn.

Now it appears Obama is stuffing his job slots
with the political in-crowd of years ago.(Clinton’s) How can Obama now say Washington insiders are out now that his politics of change is in? Defined as same old political hacks Clinton had who gave out pardons to criminals like it was free penny candy. What is Clinton’s admitted mistake prone Eric Holder who pressed for Mark Rich’s pardon doing as Obama’s pick for AG? What is Obama thinking? Surely don’t about change we can believe in?

It would seem, Obama is reaching years back for
the old ways of how things were done, rather than looking ahead for fresh new ideas; from smart energetic people with new ideas. New ways of solving old problems. Who needed Obama to give us old ways of solving new problems?

In my view, anybody who believed in real change, and sees what Obama is doing must feel like an ass for voting for the brown eyed hand-some man. “Hey, Eric, you suggest to pardon criminal Mark Rich under Clinton”?

Obama: “Well, my constituency won’t remember it and the press won’t report on it so there’s nothing to worry about. Well, since Eric is black, it doesn’t matter, he can be my attorney general.

Obama’s thought process must go something like this: “My constituency, as proved by Zogby didn’t know what I was saying during the campaign, so they can’t realize that what I’m doing is the exact opposite of what I said.” The only people who paid attention are the pundits and Republicans. The pundits won’t report I apparently lied about my plans because they’ll carry water for me any time I ask them.

“So I get off scott free.”

Liars, like Obama though, tend not to get away forever. Even Clinton and Hillary were caught lying through their teeth about Jeffifer Flowers and Monica Lewinski.

Rachel is convinced that Obama’s campaign of lies and deception will eventually catch up to him.

By January, 20th, 2009, Obama runs the risk of being run out of Washington on a rail because he comes off as the biggest liar in the annals of Presidential history.

Obama sure has a long road ahead of him and the work has already begun. My opinion is he will eventually crash and burn. He is unprepared and uneducated and the most inexperienced President ever to take office. That being said, I only can wonder how much the left wing illuminati are going to screw things up for our country. Obama followers think he is some sort of Messiah. Well I’ve got news for the Obama followers–he is just a politician and he will let you down just like all the rest. He is no different…just wait until honeymoon is over!
