Of course, the vast majority of voters are not conservatives, and elections in America -- except in carefully gerrymandered districts -- are not won on the right.

and as a note, as a conservative/independent hybrid myself, I don't simply ballyhoo what we have representing us as any sort of role model for conservatism by any means. I remember when was Perot was around in 88-'92 or so, even the Republican party was touting core issues such as: a flat tax, term limits for congress, line item veto, and a balanced budget-probably the last time we came anywhere near 'changing' anything. The general populous was supported of this, and books that were braking down government waste and the budget in detail were flying off shelves.

Of course, after Perot was out of the race, you never heard another thing about it. If Jack Kemp had run a better campaign, who knows...I was not a Perot fan overall, but the idea of running the government budget as if it were an accountable business being prominent in the public mind was the last time I saw any idea for 'change' in modern politics. Until they can restructure our campaign funding system in the first place, we're never going to have a politician in any high office who isn't already bought and paid for.

Yea, but I would still pigeon hole the Democratic party as a part of 80,000,000 personal agendas. For the most part, most conservatives I know think for the greater good, and just about every liberal leaning one seems to be a one or two issue voter. The short and simple part of it is, that pretty much everything bad is already illegal, other then enforcing the laws the government is way oversized and overfunded to do what they are supposed to do. There is more then enough money already in the budget to control our borders and pay for national health care in addition to sustaining our military and infrastructure if it were run anything close to resembling efficiency.

A flat tax for everyone who makes over $30K and a purging of the incredibly bloated government agencies and massive government contractor budgets would be too much to ask. We have 6-figure salary contractors doing basic tasks alongside our $30k a year soldiers for crying out loud. There is nothing any more taxes would accomplish, but as was said above, there is no money in the cure.

Actually, the Democratic Party altered its approach quite a bit. And began winning/almost winning presidential elections starting at the beginning of the last decade.

The New Democrats were positioned much more moderately.

>eorge:
Simon you hit it on the head:

‘So that in the Democrat idea of utopia we get the worst of all possible worlds’

Unfortunately, the average Joe Democrat really has no idea why they are one in the first place. The vast majority of staple Democratic sounding boards by politicians have been the same for decades. You would of think they would of changed ONE single thing they profess to believe in at some point. Everything you hear in the Democratic campaigns of today is the exact same things you heard 30 years ago. Without racism, inequality, poverty, welfare, and unemployment, there would be no Democratic party. No politician on the left is in it to fix anything.

This is a column, not a book. You will see over time how the energy issue works for the Democrats.

>M. Simon:
So Bill,

Do any of the candidates actually have a plan to lower oil prices? You know like opening more areas for drilling? Like clearing the way for more refineries? Or have the Democrats made such things so toxic that the only alternative is to starve third worlders by turning food into fuel? With a net energy output that may actually be negative? So that in the Democrat idea of utopia we get the worst of all possible worlds. Burn more oil. Raise food prices. Lower automotive fuel efficiency (because a gallon of ethanol has 60% of the energy of a gallon of gasoline).

Where did these geniuses come from? They need to repeal a few laws. Let them start with the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Even John McCain says the US economy is in a recession.

>RIch Rostrom:
“The country is in a recession”??

Unemployment, even after the recent slight increase, is below its average for the Clinton years. There have been no negative growth quarters.

The continual rhetoric from Democrats, echoed by much of the press, is that the “Bush economy” must be bad. Who ya gonna believe? Them? Or your lying eyes?
