The Prime-Time Presidency

Obama gets more coverage at an NBA game than George Bush in his final two years in office. Is he overexposed?

How does one tell when we reach the point of having too much of a good thing? During the 2008 election season, there was no question that Barack Obama enjoyed broad popularity (this has continued into the troubled honeymoon period of his presidency). The media compliantly serves up all of the new leader that we can handle, and perhaps more. But, as William Blake once noted, “The road to excess leads to the palace of wisdom … for we never know what is enough until we know what is more than enough.” Is President Obama in danger of marketing himself out of an audience?

With his prime-time appearance last Tuesday night, President Barack Obama set an unusual record for modern times, holding more televised appeals to the nation in just over two months than his predecessor staged in the last two years. He was also our first sitting president to plop down on the couch with Jay Leno for a late-night chat. (His teleprompter-free excursion into comedy at the expense of the Special Olympics may explain the reluctance of previous West Wing denizens to brave those waters.)

These high-profile forays into the public eye and interruptions of vital national affairs such as Dancing With the Stars are only the tip of the iceberg. George W. Bush had more than his share of bill signing ceremonies, meeting with foreign dignitaries and other press availabilities during his final two years in office, but the networks generally couldn’t be bothered to carry them. For Bush to interrupt a rerun of Lost would, in the opinion of some, have required him to start a third war.  This stands in stark contrast to the current leader of the free world, who manages to stop the presses every time he emerges from the White House to scarf down a couple of red hots at Gray’s Papaya.

Presidents enjoy the vast power and influence of the bully pulpit, perhaps more than any other public figure. It’s only natural that they would exercise this privilege to bring their message and agenda directly to the people on occasion in an effort to foster public support. But President Obama seems to be moving this battle of the airwaves into a next generation of policy warfare. One day he’s out in California with the Governator and the next he’s hosting a meeting with labor union leaders.

Observing these cross-country jaunts to push his agenda forward, I keep coming back to the one question which has lurked in the back of my mind since January 20.  Has Barack Obama yet realized that he won that election and he is no longer on the campaign trail?

0bama talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk. Our ‘Hot house flower’ lives high on the hog with extravagant parties and OPENLY stoned giggles while the rest of the country suffers.

This self-loving, self-absorbed idiot piece of caca is sending the world down the proverbial ‘poop shoot’ while he giggles and guffaws in interviews. We have a full-on LOON in office and the MSM look the other way. It’s getting painfully OBVIOUS that we have pure scum trying to run our country into the ground.

HELLO? Wake up, America. You should be ashamed for this sh*tbag in office and you better own up and pay your pennance by admitting you EFFED UP.

Yes. ‘Penance’. I know.

Yes, he is over-exposed. I am totally sick of seeing this guy and hearing his stupid ideas. I have started an Obama countdown clock…

He has a day job?

Mar 30, 2009 - 3:32 am 5. Kim B.:

Since he can’t smoke a cigarette at the White House & risk getting caught by Michelle, my theory is that all the travel around the country is just sneaking a smoke break on a very grand scale. I liked Dennis Miller’s idea that he should just start lighting up a press conferences and blow a string of smoke zeroes when asked how much we’re spending.

… over-exposure and absurd, nauseating sycophancy – in yesterday’s issue, Huffington Post had about TWENTY Obama headlines. I’m serious – two vertical rows of entries were OBAMA-centered. Yes – a very important man mister Obama is.

However, in my eyes, the problem is less the over-exposure or sycophancy – the problem is that a very large number of Americans are still enthralled by this airbag, and will be so in the future.
This absurdity occurring in America will be handsomely complemented by tommorow’s show in Europe, where the G-20 protesters (a bunch of anarchists, enviros, lefties, etc.) will be vastly outnumbered by crowds of tearful “I see the future’s promise in him” stupid people – I’d call this the Berlin Infantilization Syndrome.
Wait for Diane Sawyer’s report – you will be deeply moved.

“….Has Barack Obama yet realized that he won that election and he is no l
longer on the campaign trail?….”

Obama’s career has been one big campaign trail and now he’s working toward the next one – reelection in 2012. From there he’ll be aiming for Top Dog at the UN so watch out for him kissing up to the current crop of anti-US thugs that run that institution.

You don’t really expect this guy to do any actual work do you? That’s not his thing and shame on you for thinking such silly thoughts.

Mar 30, 2009 - 4:54 am 10. Confused in Virginia:

Of course he is overexposed, for several reasons, but I think it’s by design. First, he thinks that if he can “take the message to the American people,” he will stand a better chance of advancing his agenda, because after all, the people are the ones that gave him a “mandate” by electing him. Unfortunately, he doesn’t really know what that “mandate” really was, and that “the people” don’t really have a vote in Congress, so he will get in front of a camera on anything and everything hoping to figure out what the mandate was. Also, since everyone in the MSM has proclaimed him the best speaker ever, he doesn’t really know that his speeches are boring and monotone, and that it is obvious that he is totally detached from any of the issues.

Secondly, I agree that he seems stuck on campaigning. Never mind that he won the election, being a leader requires work, while campaigning is all about the adulation that he feels from “the people.” I believe that he is addicted to the applause without having to do anything to get it.

Lastly, I think that he has a very short attention span, so having to deal with issues that take more than a apeech to resolve just takes too much time and attention. Wasn’t it he who, after having been in the White House for 10 days, said – and I’m paraphrasing – that he just had to get out of the house because he felt cooped up? And then of course, unlike other Presidents, he sees this as a 9-5 Monday-Friday job, where he can then have time to spend with his friends, go out to dinner, go to a basketball game or two, and practice his bowling because we know that to be a good President, you can’t have a low bowling average. The important issues, after all, are being handled by the best and the brightest, like Michelle, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Clinton, Emanuel, and Geithner.

Mar 30, 2009 - 4:57 am 11. elvis:

I still don’t understand why people think he is something to behold.
He has a certain drone to his character and speech. Like all pop tune, that certain people can’t get enough of,he will fade into the “one hit wonder category”.

Mar 30, 2009 - 6:17 am 15. nosinin:

My guess is that a good majority of the people who voted for him are no longer paying a bit of attention to what he is doing. Many of them had no idea who his running mate was or even what his party affiliation was. They just got on the bus, rode to the polls and voted for our first black Prez. Now they are standing at their mailboxes waiting for their checks to come. It is looking more and more to me that he doesn’t care a sh*t bit about them either. We will have two classes of people the haves-those people in the government who will advance his ideas and the have nots-the rest of us.

Mar 30, 2009 - 6:24 am 16. Jeff:

I disagree with those that say he is overexposed. He has set a very aggressive agenda that requires a lot of selling. Why? Because more than half of America doesn’t support it.

He also has inherited some awful problems. It is the President’s job to lead, and to explain what is going on to the American people. The TV pulpit is the most efficient way to disseminate information.

That being said, I support none of his agenda. I also believe the networks are complicit in giving him lots of airtime. Recall Peter Jennings and ABC not even wanting to air Bush’s speeches.

Mar 30, 2009 - 6:54 am 17. Meryl:

When I worked at Lockheed in the 1980’s, one of the mantras of the stoned assembly-line folks in the jungle was, “If you don’t know what you’re doing, just double your speed and no one will notice.”

Part of their motive is simply 24/7 news blitz, so that no one can meaningfully oppose or slow down what the things they are putting in motion.

As a result, there are many events that should be covered that aren’t; decisions that should be exposed that nobody has time to expose; “unintended consequences” from last week’s blitz that nobody even has time to list; and always, the download of stuff being readied for tomorrow.

Since obama was immaculated and said the oath of office, Rahm Emanuel has pretty much disappeared. I doubt that his disappearance is driven by lack of things to do. He’s a very busy boy. He’s the backroom technician in Lucy’s candy factory scene, setting out the chocolates and speeding up the conveyor belt.

I seriously doubt whether any thoughtful public person, obama supporter or not, has had the ability to meaningfully correlate and/or analyze events since January 20.

All we know for sure is what our crawling skin tells us.

BTW, Mayor Denny Walaker of Fargo said repeatedly on daily flood reports yesterday that Homeland Security personnel were giving them heavy pressure to abandon Fargo to the flood.

They are fighting, maintaining dikes, sealing breaches and SUCCEEDING. Of course, that doesn’t please the feds who want ND more dependent on them. Mayor Walaker keeps saying, “We haven’t come this far and invested this much to give up now.”

All vulnerable persons have been evacuated. All unnecessary businesses are closed. Most homes have only 1 family member checking on the house to keep the pumps running. In Mayor Walaker’s words, they are ready for a “graceful complete evacuation” if that becomes necessary due to dike failures.

In the meantime, as of yesterday, they were working on stocking a 500,000 backup of filled and WARM sandbags (blizzard coming in today, and you cannot seal water leaks with frozen sandbags), to be used for the duration. They planned their work months ago, and now they are working their plan. And their plan is working.

This surely cannot please the drug-peddling feds who want North Dakotans on their knees.

If you have any opportunity to check out Denny Walaker, do so. He’s a living, walking peach of a guy, a very hard worker, a successful city administrator and part of a dwindling breed that says, “Get out of my way. You are not contributing.”

Somebody should get Ray Nagin up here to see how it’s done.

Check out AM1100TheFlag for updates.

Mar 30, 2009 - 7:14 am 18. Meryl:

Should have mentioned, Fargo has lost only 5 homes….so Homeland Security’s dreams about abandoning the city are not based on failure. They’re based on expectations of failure. Why am I not surprised.

Mar 30, 2009 - 7:16 am 19. JED:

He is underexposed. The more that he dictates to us the more that his true character is revealed. The press failed to properly vet him before the election. The press lost critical thinking. Perhaps BHO will state his true agenda for America instead of presenting the distraction that he is a centeralist.

Have to agree with most of the previous posters but would like to add that if I see one more cover of a women’s magazine with Michelle on it under the title “Michelle is the best mom in the entire universe!” or “Michelle is the trendsetter for all women on the planet!” or “Michelle and Barack bring sexy back” I’ll puke. I’ve actually started to turn every magazine that has either of their smiling mugs on it around on the newstand. Funny thing is that at my local Barnes and Noble, someone beat me to it this weekend! Ha!

Mar 30, 2009 - 8:40 am 21. Middleman:

Face it, Obama is more tailored for the media age and needs to utilize the media whenever he can. After all, it was the media that basically made him in the first place. The Democrats knew this and now they are reaping the rewards.
Bush was a media nightmare. Outside of a handful of poignant moments, he was absolutely cringe worthy speaking in front of the camera. Like a football jock trying to squeak by on a half-assed oral report he has to give in front of class.
Don’t be upset on the lack of exposure he received. The less, the BETTER!

In a word, yes, overexposed. To the point that no one in my circle of friends who voted for him will even listen to what he says or does, except to the point to hear more lies to deepen the realization they were wrong to have voted for him. Many of us are counting down the days until he is impeacehd or his first term of nioghtmares is over!

Mar 30, 2009 - 8:50 am 24. Sebastian Shaw:

President Obama’s two consecutive televisions speeches followed by questions is just a symptom of his inability to work the Executive Branch with any effective means; as a result, Obama, in panic mode, does what he knows: Campaign.

The teleprompter president thinks himself the world’s gift to politics, but he is really a poison with his dictator-like decrees. What is going to happen when the teleprompter president loses one of the Houses of Congress in 2010? He’ll panic again & go back in campaign mode.

In the meantime, he, being the superficial shallow thinking narcissist, allows Nancy Pelosi to lead in his place. Followers do that.

President Obama is toast. He’s doing too much too fast. Even the Democrats are worried about tying themselves to the dictator-in-the-making, President Obama.

Obama’s fall from grace will be fast & hard. The only question is will the MSM report it? I believe they will attempt to prop him up at first then follow the people instead for fear of losing even more of their precious audience for Obama’s adulation.

Sorry, but you’re pathetic attempts to prevent the Obamas from bringing sexy back have failed. You could spend every sad minute of every sad hour of your sad life in Barnes & Noble futilely flipping magazine covers featuring the Obamas’ sexy likenesses, and there’s still no way you can stem the raging tide of sexiness that has inevitably been brought back by the ascension of this ultra-sexy power couple. The best you can hope for is to bask in the sexiness that they’ve brought back in the hope that somehow it will rub off on you.

Mar 30, 2009 - 9:00 am 26. Jan:

Many good posts above. Most seem to conclude, as I do, that there is an over-saturation of Obama in the media today.

It is alarming to see how grand the WH has become these days with Obama at the helm for only 60+ days. It has become like another Michael Jacksons’s “Neverland,” (parties, fanfare) where he is customizing the office to serve more his needs, rather than the people of this country!

Mar 30, 2009 - 9:46 am 27. Middleman:

Neverland? Is that the best you can come up with? I have yet to see giraffes, elephants and fatherless children running around the White House.
Although it was way before my time, I do recall a previous womanizing president with a bootlegger Dad who the media dubbed his time in the White House as Camelot.

Mar 30, 2009 - 9:54 am 28. Sebastian Shaw:

Obama has been overexposed since he began campaigning for President in 2007 with mindless talking heads embracing a cipher or a blank slate to fill up their own empty perspectives; the overexposure is going to bring a terrible backlash for Obama & the press precisely because he is literally a Marxist empty suit. He literally contradicts himself, yet the press has yet to catch him on his many contradictions.

The press is starting to turn on Obama since he has blocked them from everything.

I read that this is similar what happened to President Jimmy Carter in the 1970’s. By the last two years of his turn, Jimmy Carter proved to be impotent since he clashed with Congress & his own White House aides.

President Obama is literally Jimmy Carter’s second term 30-something years later. But Obama’s Marxist tendancies & hatred for America make him even worse than Carter. At least Carter could give speeches & press conferences without a teleprompter at all times.

Mar 30, 2009 - 10:56 am 30. El hefe:

Even a good portion of the left in this nation will have buyers remorse soon if they don’t already.
You have to see that Obama was the politically correct choice despite his ideolgy and his connections to duboius and evil people, he was the emotional choice, it made people feel good that he got elected president.
Didn’t anybody ever tell not to give in to your emotions when you’re making a big purchase? You were warned.
Yes the Devil knows he has but a short time so he’s going to wreak as much havoc as he can on this country and the world before he is shut down, this equates perfectly with Obama, he knows he has but a short time so he is wrecking all of the good he can find in his short time.
The amount of time he has is to be determined by the actions of the people of this country, if we know the truth and do something about it with our feet, our mouths and pocketbooks or wallets we can change things for the better.
The people who love this country and the freedom it stands for must act!
If we do not act we will have deserved what we got and it won’t be pretty or sexy or hip or cool it will be tormenting, frustrating, burning anxious longing for a true messiah who has already knocked but no one heard. Of course we can wish that Obama is only a Jimmy Carter, that would be far better than what is being prepared for us now. But wishing will not get it done, action will.

Mar 30, 2009 - 11:03 am 31. Professor Guvinoff:

What’s the value of the bully pulpit? It’s whatever the presidents makes of it.

How can the president devalue it? By using too often and too casually. It can be very useful in a national emergency, assuming it has not been cheapened by inappropriate uses earlier.

Obama is too self-centered to preserve values not directly tied to his own self importance. The POTUS is important, but not by acting like an aspirant. It’s not about preening, it’s about governing. The power invested in the president is unequalled, which means that nobody can make mistakes as big as the president can.

Remember, this power was delegated by the electorate. If there is not enough checks and balances against presidential excess, zeal and hubris, we still have the power of the ballot in 2010, and 2012. Join the tea parties if you feel the administration does not know how and when to hold its horses.

#25 Steve P… Uh what? Is that the best retort a liberal wingnut can come up with? I should “wish” to be as sexy as President Giggles and his horse-faced wife? Uh sure there Steve. If the Obama’s are your ideal power couple, you are definitely living in your parents basement somewhere. No wonder you could stomach voting for him. Your willingness to vote for his sexual prowess instead of issues facing Americans explains a lot about you Steve. Thanks for the insight (scary as it is). Let me guess…you were attracted to Bill Clinton’s buttocks also Steve?

#25 Steve P – All I can say is “yuck!” Michelle and Obama sexy? That makes me want to vomit in my mouth.

He is both over AND underexposed (#19 Jed). He’s like that annoying fly, buzzing around your head – you knows he’s there because you can hear him and you catch a brief glimpse of him when he flits in front of your eyes, but you can’t really see him or make out any details.

President Obama is a lethal combination of arrogance & ignorance all rolled up into one egotistical narcissistic hollow shell of a man. Without his teleprompter, he’s nothing. His true self comes out of the darkness. It’s not pretty. There’s a reason he is almost having a quasi-affair with his teleprompter. It’s equally creepy & funny at the same time.

AThinkingPerson:“Let me guess…you were attracted to Bill Clinton’s buttocks also Steve?”

Psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism where a person’s personal attributes, in this case a repressed conservative’s unacceptable or shameful homoerotic thoughts about Clinton’s buttocks, are ascribed onto another person.

Michelle is definitely the sexiest first lady since Jackie O. More intelligent, more ambitious, better body, amazing smile and better style than any FLOTUS since. But stupid me, I guess I should have known that, just as in everything else, conservatives would be close-minded in their view of beauty. Personally, I think it’s just the bitterness of knowing that the Michelle Obamas of the world, i.e., the sexy, intelligent independent urban women who dominate American pop culture and have become the new standard of what is beautiful, will never give you slackjawed yokels the time of day.

Mar 30, 2009 - 2:54 pm 44. AThinkingPerson:

Michael Jackson has a useful talent: He can sing & dance.

President Obama’s only talent is pulling the rug from the people’s feet & demanding an applause afterwards for being the next best thing to God; in other words, Obama is hoodwink, a typical thug. Take away the teleprompter, ear piece, & note cards, he turns into jelly. Obama is the real Hollow Man.

In the case of underbite, bull dog Michelle 0. I’m guessing beauty is in the eye of the ‘beer holder’. *OUCH* That woman with her evil arched wonk eyes is NOT pretty by a long-shot.

Mar 30, 2009 - 4:22 pm 49. one of my own:

Scared much? You sure sound like it. If not, you should be. Obama is a media master. He knows how to reach and inspire people. Not YOU people, just all the rest of America – the real Americans.

His skills extend beyond traditional media, which is why you complain so much about him being overexposed. He’s not. He’s taking his policies directly to the American people. And we’re responding. We love seeing someone who actually takes bold steps to change the country for the better. In case you’ve forgotten (and I know you’re doing your best to do that, just ask #35 Moogie, who says, “Please, no more of this “inherited” crap. Obama didn’t inherit anything.”) . . . this country was a complete f-ing mess. Fixing your side’s wholesale destruction of our economy and reputation is going to take some time. And since you feel no responsibility for your actions, and offer no support in its resurrection, I suggest you just sit your ass down, shut the F up and let people with brains and vision handle things. You’ve had plenty of chances. You blew them all.

Mar 30, 2009 - 4:28 pm 50. Delia:

A ‘media disaster’ is more like it. Teleprompter Teddy Ruxpin the giggling stoner in Chief is making a mockery of the presidency with each moronic misstep he makes.

I think we’ve seen the Cretin in Chief on TV a total of maybe 10 seconds since Election Day. We are boycotting all video and audio of him (not easy when listening to Rush and Mark!) and are striving to get through the next 4 years (or until Impeachment) without seeing him other than inadvertent glimpses online. And actually we’re starting to avoid Drudge for that very reason.

DVR everything and never watch live TV. READ. You’ll be saner for it, it’s better for the blood pressure, and it’s better for your mind. Listening to the Teleprompter Narcissist will cause loss of brain cells. His supporters are proof of that.

It is a wonderful day in America when the people want to see/hear their President. And, to think we have a President who is articulate and intelligent. What a refreshing change.

All real Americans are proud to have a distinguished President. We know the Lord is bringing his blessings on our beloved nation.

Mar 30, 2009 - 9:31 pm 58. mk:

I’d prefer having Teleprompter Jesus on the couch of the Tonight Show than actually doing his job. The DJIA and Wall Street could use the break from taking massive dives everytime he opens his piehole about anything economy wise. I’m sure that Pakistan would be relieved to know that he’s too busy yukking it up with Jay Leno to threaten to unilaterally invade their country. The Military Vets would also prefer him to talk to his little fans in the press than to talk about their healthcare…..

Keep campaigning, man! Give the world a break from your “governing.”

Edward A… You’re right! It IS a wonderful day when people want to see/hear their President. Unfortunately as you can tell from the turmoil that the world and the economy are in and which continue to worsen daily under the tutelage of our President Giggles, it is NOT a “wonderful” day. It’s a scary, uncertain day. Pretending it’s all sunshine and roses is a juvenile way of looking at things.

Wanting to stand up for America in the face of a socialist takeover by an unprepared President is what “real” Americans are proud to do. Join us won’t you?

Did Obama create the mess? If not, he inherited it. The car maker bail out was done under Bush. Bush should have made them declare bankruptcy back in October of 2008. He didn’t because there was an election and no Republican would have won in Michigan. Did Obama create the banking crisis? No, it was created over years, and accelerated from 2001-2007 for a lot of reasons. One stat you need to know is subprime and alt-a loans went from slightly less than 10% of all loans, to slightly over 35%.

Obama’s response to what he inherited is poor at best. However, he did not cause the problem. He was only a Senator 18 months. Blame Illinois internal problems on him!

Mar 31, 2009 - 6:38 am 61. Sebastian Shaw:

Jeff, President Obama’s TRILLION DOLLAR “stimulus” bill made the Economy all Obama. Furthermore, to hear the supposed leader of the free country whine about President Bush is rather nauseating. Obama wants all the glory, but none of his failures. Believe me, the Porkulus bill & any other spending will create HYPER INFLATION in the near future. It’s all on Obama’s hollow shoulders to carry; however, he is not as powerful as Atlas & will crumble into a thousand little bits when he has a nervous breakdown from the pressure & his own non-leadership abilities.

Stagflation is coming. Be prepared. Obama sure isn’t. He’ll be blindsided & attempt to blame Bush for the stagflation when Obama is the source. Or more precisely, the TRILLION DOLLAR Porkulus is the root cause…

Mar 31, 2009 - 8:04 am 62. Sebastian Shaw:

President Obama’s ideas are not adding water to stop the fires from burning, but he is adding gasoline to fire–making the bad economy worse. These are Obama’s Marxist ideas. And they will be his failures in his attempt to subvert the United States of America into a Socialist Republic. Obama’s weakness is he’s doing too many things too fast. And his only idea is to throw good money after bad at our expense.

I don’t like being lectured by a man who has never run a business in his entire life. It’s like having a shark complaining about being a vegetarian. It’s not believable.

Obama is ego incarnate. His narcissism runs deep, but that’s the only thing deep about Obama himnself given his own shallow personality looking for constant adulation. This is a two-sided sword. Obama is going to have a dramatic fall from grace created by his own ignorance & arrogance enabled by the MSM & his sychophant yes-people.

The Washington Post poll today has Obama’s approval rating at 66%. His “on the right track” numbers have also improved significantly. For those of us not drinking the Kool Aid, it’s hard to accept. This guy is a long way from being toast.

So, I don’t think the exposure is hurting him one iota. Seems to be helping him actually.

Beam me up Scotty!

Mar 31, 2009 - 10:58 am 65. Sebastian Shaw:

The Wahington Post is part of the MSM; therefore, their poll is suspect. Popularity, in & of itself, is nothing to achieve since people are fickle by nature & cannot please everyone at all times; popularity is fleeting. In this respect, Barack Obama reminds me of a high school class president rather than the President of the United States.

The Rasmussan poll is more accurate with his 50% approval rating & dropping daily.

Still stuck on the partisan divide, eh? In the modern parlance, this economic crapstorm is SO beyond repubs vs dems. Please pull yourself together and pay close attention – the repeal of Glass-Steagall in Nov of 1999 (which is when the financial Ebola virus was loosed upon us all), passed the Senate 91-9 and was enthusiastically signed into law by Clinton with a bunch of greased-pocket sycophantic Repubs AND Dems in the background!!!The enemy IS the financial oligarchy of Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citibank, AIG, et al.
Steve P.,

Wow! Most people here at PJM do a better job of hiding (denying) their racists tendencies. I give you points for standing tall and proud and defending the down-home philosophies of your heroic predecessors -Lester Maddox, George Wallace, and Robert Byrd. You’ve entered rare company as our 21st century biscuits-and-gravy bigotry.

Otherwise, your retort post is ironically coming off right out of grade school. Projection at its best or worst depending on your perspective.

When you lose an arguement, you bring out the race card. The race card doesn’t work anymore. Just ask Jesse Jackson or CNN.

Kevin @ 29: What’s really sad is that the media probably would cover Obama taking a dump. And then they’d be jumping up and down and clapping their hands, “Good one, good one Mr. President”. That’s part of the point, the content doesn’t really seem to matter at this point. There is no way that sane people can actually think it is good that he is spreading the wealth around, growing the size of government, strengthening unions and curbing carbon dioxide emissions while in a recession. Maybe eventually the other half of America will wake up and say, “Wow, I think maybe Obama’s sh*t actually does stink”. Don’t count on it though.

Mar 31, 2009 - 3:08 pm 71. Bart:

If not mistaken, a line from the movie “Patton” spoken by George C. Scott went something like this in reference to Rommel. “I read your book you magnificant son-of-a-bitch”. Well, I read Obama’s book and his is not magnificant but if anyone is willing to take the time to read it, what he is doing is no surprise at all. In fact, he is following his life script and will continue to do so. There is no substance, nothing grounding him other than his ideology and total commitment to socialism. He never produced anything of significance or original in his life. He was late producing the manuscript for his first book and the deal was cancelled only to be picked up by someone else. He spent several months out of the country living on his advance writing.

He learned early on to keep in front of his chosen targets and how to manipulate them and say the right thing. This man is as cold and calculating as anyone I have seen in my long life on this planet. This is not about race but about a false prophet who used his natural gifts to maneuver his way into the most powerful position on the planet. He will lie one day, reverse his position the next and the media will not call him out on it. Those who offer him cover remind me of the weak kneed guys who are afraid of their own shadow who think guys like Obama are cool. They want to emulate him and will defend him to the death because of some hero worship cult.

Obama is doing exactly what he planned to do all along. He will stay in front of the media and all other outlets available so he can continue to deliver his message directly to those who put him in office. His popularity will remain high as long as those who contribute the least are polled the most. His popularity will remain high as long as his public persona doesn’t slip too much and the true man behind the mask is revealed too soon.

In time, the true Obama will step forward but based on the way events are unfolding, by the time he does, it will be too late. I am not a conspiracy or a Manchurian Candidate theorist but as each day passes, my position changes a litte more. I was not fooled by George W. Bush or Bill Clinton. Each man ended up being true to who he is deep inside. Obama is following the same path.

I didn’t bring up blue lips. Somebody else did. And when he did, that was substantive. I could have delved further into his post with this . . . ” . . . if you told MO to “haul ass” it would take her three trips.” Or would that be another tangent?

dumb of my own,
Try you again? You have been measured and you have been found wanting. Your posts lack rhythm; they meander; you fail epically in using appropriate metaphors; there is not enough alliteration or assonance to really draw the reader in; they generally devolve to silly name-calling, often name-calling that is completely out of context. I suspect that you’re Keith Olbermann, aren’t you? Only an utter imbecile like Olbermann would fail to connect “circulatory (as in bloodflow)” to “blue lips,” though these very words appeared in the same sentence! Instead, Olbermann, you knee-jerked to the ole’ race card. Got nuthin’ to say – race card. No good retorts – race card. Devoid of logic – race card. Well, I am gettin’ powerful hungry – I think my redneck self is gonna take a ride into town and see if I can’t find me some chitlins and watermelon to eat. Now where on earth did I hang my dag-burn Klan robe?

Mar 31, 2009 - 10:16 pm 77. donttreadonme:

one of my own,
Let me help you out-
Let’s take your post 74. “treading on you” is OK – it directly plays off of my handle. “You’re an idiot. I get it” Rhythm and quick cadence – decent effort. The reader should respond to this.
“Sebastian didn’t provide a backstop.” Actually, he did. Exaggerating is certainly fine – lying is not fine. Credibility issue here. “Somebody else did. And when he did..” The “he” is me, yes? Why the perspective switch? The post directly addressed me at the beginning. Next time, look the bull in the eye. “As to Beavis & Butthead jerkfest..” This is the metaphor/analogy issue I mentioned above. It has no reference point, which a reader will notice immediately. “It sounds like an anecdote than a joke..” This is a bit vague. My posts generally contain more than one “joke,” so a little specificity would enhance this final retort.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

So what is your opinion of this article? Is Obama over exposed or isn’t he? How does his use of the teleprompter compare to Bush’s use or lack? How well did Obama handle himself after his prepared opening remarks (yes, using the teleprompter) during his last press conference?

I’m just curious. Because all I’ve seen and heard from you is how you attempt to dismantle and insult the opinions of people you don’t necessarily agree with.

I challenge you to post a rational opinion without resorting to name calling and insulting the intelligence of everyone on this blog, or resorting to calling the President names.

Apr 1, 2009 - 9:04 am 79. Sebastian Shaw:

The race card is ineffective precisely because blacks have abused it for their own purposes; therefore, throwing around racism with no substantial proof just erodes the true charges when they do happen.

The same applies to sexism card, gender card, sexual orientation card, etc al.

One of My Own, you should reread “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”: A boy, in a prank, screams for help when he says a wolf has attacked his sheep. The men come armed & ready to kill the beast only to discover there is no wolf. Later, the boy does the same thing. Again, the men come for help. And once again there is no wolf. A third time, a wolf does appear & attacks the boy. He screams for help, but no one comes for help as the wolf eats him alive. Why? The boy has proven himself to be a liar; therefore, he is no taken seriously. This is the same effect with the race card being thrown about by Race Vultures, Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton along with the media outlets of CNN & MSNBC.

Apr 1, 2009 - 12:01 pm 80. Gene Lalor:

The Frenzied Rush for Obama-slation

There’s a plan behind the Obama frenzy to issue and overturn presidential orders and at the root of the frenzy of his fellow Democrats in Congress to propose, pass, and get signed into law legislation which radically changes the American social, economic, and political landscape.

As for actually reading and digesting the import of any bills before Congress votes on them and the president signing them, the prevailing philosophy is: Damn the reading, full speed ahead. Of paramount importance is keeping focused on the election of 2010.

Rahm Emanuel, the president’s version of Karl Rove, must be absolutely giddy over his achievements to date in this very young administration. As Obama’s entourage headed off to Europe en masse, 500 bodies strong, including speech writers, advisors, security personnel, chefs, personal attendants, and designated bottle washers, Rahm must be proud indeed of what they have done so far.

Now comes the biggest challenge to date. The European excursion has multiple purposes but chief among them is Obama’s need to persuade heads of state that Obama is right and that they are all as wrong as snow in April. Whatever the results, they have good reason to be cocky, considering their successes so far.

First, there was the campaign itself, a campaign in which Obama could promise and say virtually anything and commit gaffe after gaffe with impunity, knowing the mass media would cover for him, which it did repeatedly. Maybe, as Obama said, there really are 57 states and the rest of us just haven’t noticed the new arrivals?

Then there were all the promises he made regarding such hot topics as funding embryonic stem cell research, unfetterring gays in the military, shuttering Gitmo, massively increasing spending and taxes, pushing for union-sought card check, wiping out abortion restrictions via FOCA, instituting Cap and Trade, et al. All those initiatives have been fulfilled or are in process of fulfillment.

Our president hasn’t yet made specific proposals on other campaign promises and implicit aims. Sharing the wealth, dismantling the military, stemming the rising seas, restructuring the planet, climbing every mountain, swimming every sea will have to wait for his return so give the man time.

Most recently he tested the opposition waters to see what he could get away with in his quest for dictatorial powers. Obama crossed his Rubicon with his outrageous and unprecedented dismissal by fiat of the CEO of a major American corporation. And there was barely a ripple in the waters.

Call it a power grab or a dictatorial presumption by a power hungry Chief Executive, President Obama tipped his hand with that action. He revealed what some of us have long suspected, that he sees himself far removed from the norm of what a president is and what powers a president should have in a representative democratic republic.

There was good reason for his nickname, the Obamassiah.

GM’s Rick Wagoner ostensibly stepped down at the president’s “behest,” a euphemism for “demand” and took his $22 million . . .

However, I will bother to ridicule and torment-usually to good effect. Remember, my domain is that of empirical data and reality; yours is of intent and idealism. Sorry, I didn’t see any of that in your post. Perhaps stringing together some metaphors, alliteration and assonance might help . . . really draw the reader in. Or is it draw in the reader? How do you feel about split infinitives? How do you feel about 4,500 military deaths? How do you feel about wildly self-serving overstatement? Seems you feel pretty good about all of that. Much better effort. Perhaps your best one yet. The “how do you feel..” cadence – solid. Connecting the 3000 murdered to the fall of 4500 of our finest – good, from a literal perspective. (bugnuts philosophically- surely you are not implying that you can only be disturbed by one or the other?) Over the next few weeks/months of responding to my constant taunting of your shifty, morally vacuous belief system, you may yet achieve a certain level of competence in the written word. 84 Retread . . . Stick to your beginner’s fascination with tools and techniques. One day you will master them. Then you will set them aside and develop a genuine style. Until then, stay with Strunk & White – the sanctuary of those enslaved by rules and structure and the ubiquitous comma.

Meanwhile maybe you can conjure up some of that “empirical data and reality.” Perhaps you can post them in the form of a question . . . “Is Obama the anti-Christ?” Or maybe you can assign your 3rd-grade assertions to some mystical other . . . “Some people say Democrats want the U.S. to fail.” You know, more technique, this time served up not by Strunk & White but by Hannity and Ailes. Just can’t function with your nose ring empty, can you? Always gotta be led around by the snoot.

If not data and reality, then regale us with some of those jokes that remain so curiously invisible in your pinchy little circles of opinion. Careful, we know how conservatives suffer in that department . . . just not funny, just not creative. (Here’s a tip: just because something is supposed to be funny doesn’t make it funny.) But take heart, you do have the market cornered on vapid and pedantic, so you got that going for you.

Off you go now – off to Google “empirical data + reality + jokes” – keep you neatly confined inside the thoughts of others. Trust me, you don’t want to live out here where the thinking runs free. It’s just too damn real for an overly common man like you.

Immerse yourself in the works of the great ones. De- and reconstruct your own personal mythology. Carve first a pedestal and then a stool to place atop that pedestal upon which you can sit (or stand!) to gain the world view you need to be you. Ah, the sweet smell of potential. If a smell could ring it would ring true for you, Sir or Miss Retread.

Of course you’ll want to spend a little time licking your wounds. That’s understandable. They all do. But for the love of our dear lord in heaven above with the gates o’ pearl and cherubim and diamond harps and mini-wings and clouds shaped like pinwheels, don’t withdraw completely. The people at PJM need you. You have tremendous opportunity to ply your infantile (yet congealing!) expertise regarding all things languagey. Don’t hide your gift from the world, oh muse of the misinformed. You’re awesome with a capital AWE and then some. Greatness awaits . . . just out of reach.

Let this be a lesson to you all.
