The ‘Useful Idiots’ of Militant Islam

Self-delusion reaches new heights when clueless Westerners defend Sharia, the "moderate" Muslim Brotherhood, and "mild" Islamism.

Somewhere during Lawrence of Arabia’s blockbuster career, his bosses wondered if he was becoming “more Arab” in the desert to which they sent him to lead a revolt against the Ottoman Empire. In an endearing cue to imperial haughtiness, Field Marshal Lord Allenby asks if his man had “gone native.”

Indeed the spymaster and legendary British officer became quickly enmeshed in the tangled web he weaved back at the turn of the last century.

Likewise, when communism dawned in the 1920s, Vladimir Lenin ordered a strategy of nurturing “useful idiots” — by which he meant a contingent of communist Lawrences in the West. It worked, spawning hundreds of thousands of enamored scholars, intellectuals, experts, and dreamy romantics waving the red flags of Bolsheviks over the 70 years of the Cold War.

Today’s Islamist Lawrences are being cultivated among a broad swath of political analysts, scholars, anthropologists, pundits, missionaries, and even spies dissecting militant Islam and Islamofascism. While most carry out illuminating and necessary work, the fish they bait ends up ensnaring many.

A few recent catches: the archbishop of Canterbury urging the introduction of Sharia law in Britain; Harvard University, a bastion of secular scholarship, shutting its gym to men to accommodate Muslim women; authorities at Minneapolis’s international airport negotiating for months with 700 Somali Muslim taxi drivers who refused to pick up passengers carrying liquor or depending on guide dogs.

Then there was President George Bush launching his Muslim initiative last June from the Islamic Center of Washington, a Saudi institution distributing educational material instructing Muslims to segregate themselves from other Americans.

Among other things, the Saudi-funded publications admonish Muslims in America “to dissociate from infidels, hate them for their religion, never to rely on them for support, and always oppose them in every way according to Islamic law.” The question: how was it that among the estimated five million Muslim Americans with hugely varied institutions, the president’s advisors picked a Saudi Islamofascist ghetto as a venue?

This cluelessness is spreading into the academy and the arts too.

Witness the Guggenheim Museum of New York and the Louvre of Paris, along with Carnegie Mellon, Texas A&M, and multiple U.S. institutions, rushing to open branches in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, where laws institutionalize bigotry against women, Sharia bans images, and the government condones grievous violations of human rights for millions of expatriates of other religions.

Imagine the contortions of folks at Yale, Stanford, or Oxford when they have to explain founding campuses in Riyadh where women are not allowed or can participate only via closed circuit TV.

Useful idiocy reaches a higher plane among Western pundits who propagate the Saudi view of reverse progress, namely that Islamic societies have “particular requirements” and are evolving as “different models,” of which we should not be “‘judgmental.”

Fundamentalist creep is engulfing bastions of respectability in Western media too. At the start of Turkey’s slide away from secularism last May, the Wall Street Journal glossed over Prime Minister Erdogan’s aggressive Islamization, criticizing his secular opponents instead. The Economist argued his policy is tolerable, “even if it means enduring a bad, ineffective, corrupt, or mildly Islamist government.”

Last April a major New York Times Magazine article by James Traub argued fervently on behalf of “Islamic democrats” singing the praises of a reborn Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. This was followed by a major essay in Foreign Affairs, a weighty establishment publication, by Robert Leiken and Steven Brooke titled “The Moderate Muslim Brotherhood.” The piece declared the fundamentalist group acceptable, among other things, as some of its leaders were interviewed in English, appeared reasonable, listened to classical music, and knew of Shakespeare. The article was so lacking in inquisitiveness it merited being posted on the Muslim Brotherhood website — ikhwanonline.com — as part of their propaganda.

The Bin Ladens: An Arabian Family in the American Century, a recent book authored by respected Mideast analyst of the New Yorker Steve Coll, presents the human side of Osama bin Laden, who adopted modern technology in his terror and whose wealthy contracting father employed Christians and other infidels in his business.

We should come back to reality.

Mild Islamism is an oxymoron. Sharia law, which sanctions beating of wives and stoning for adultery, is irreconcilable with human rights. The Muslim Brotherhood founded Hamas, calls suicide bombings a good thing, and is the 21st-century version of the organized fascism of Hitler and Mussolini in the last century.

Mr. Ibrahim is exactly correct, but about 10 years (at least) too late. I was hearing the Islamist apologist tripe in graduate school in the ’90s. The Middle East Studies Association–MESA–is a bastion of this lunacy. I lost out on an academic job in Islamic History–despite a doctorate in the field, Arabic-proficiency, an extensive publishing record and tons of teaching experience–at Kennesaw State University in Georgia because some of the search committee did not like the fact that I had written articles elaborating on facts such as: in MUSLIM sources jihad means, well, jihad-as-holy-war; or beheading is sanctioned by a literal reading of the Qur’an. The P.C. crowd in the government and the media take their cues from the cowardice of the academy, where Islam and Muslims must always be presented in a positive light and the undeniable violent and misogynistic strains in Islamic thought must always be denied (which is one major reason the secularist intelligentsia hates Pope Benedict: he’s not afraid to speak the truth about Islamic civilization in this regard).

it is useless and idiot and in fact dangerous to write an article like this : everyone saying anything on islam can now safely be catagorised as a usefull idiot. Thank you very much for this great contribution in the discussion about islam !! You..

Don’t forget for far to many on the left it is more like — “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” But they know nothing about Islam, you are worse off as an athiest/secularist than one of those “Bitter people” clinging to their Bibles in PA.

The Left also forgets that if these Islamo-facsists ever gain the power they will send their useful idiots to the camps first, just like Lenin did.

You will know them by the company they keep.

chavez & islime

And you shall despair when you find your trust has all been for naught.

No one is looking out for you but you.

The socialists embrace anything that destroys that which can stand against them.

That would be God loving, Patriots who embrace immigrants and reject aliens and despise criminal invaders that rot the roots of our nation. You know, who this great nation is founded on?

It is up to the people to put down the communists here in America that have infiltrated the food sector as a way of strangling democracy, peace & justice committee, and have taken in the usefull idiots of 5 generations of hand out and turned them into a self destructive cycle of victimhood.

Be proud, stand tall and confront them where ever they show themselves from under neath the sewer rocks in which they breed like infected puss.

The biggest enemy of our country are those already here, ready to embrace this culture destruction. We must cut the head off the snake.

Also note that the term “useful idiot” was never used by Lenin (see google-link), nor did he ever comment on islam, I may think. So quoting Lenin on this is not very useful.

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=135140

Anyway, what’s disturbing in your article is the mixture of uncertain quotes, uncertain facts leading to an uncertain theory : in short “demagogy”.
You cannot imply that G. Bush, The Wall street Journal, and the New York Times Magazine are in favour of fundamentalist islam. That would be ridicolous, yet you do so.

There is a lot to say about islam, islam fundamentalism etc.. it is necessary that we will get a clear picture of what’s going on and where we want to go to. (so that terrorism can be banned and destroyed.) But your article does not help in this : it merely prevents any discussion for fear of being categorised as a “useful idiot”.
We need a broad discussion and a scientific approach on these matters.

That would not have happend if not for the “we’re worshipping females –yay” aspect of it. So that isn’t really an example of sharia law taking over.

Apr 17, 2008 - 7:30 am Mary Madigan:

Lawrence may have gone ‘native’, but he knew evil when he saw it. He agreed with Winston Churchill when he said this about the cult that founded Saudi Arabia:

A large number of Bin Saud’s followers belong to the Wahabi sect, a form of Mohammedanism which bears, roughly speaking, the same relation to orthodox Islam as the most militant form of Calvinism would have borne to Rome in the fiercest times of the religious wars. The Wahabis profess a life of exceeding austerity, and what they practise themselves they rigorously enforce on others. They hold it as an article of duty, as well as of faith, to kill all who do not share their opinions and to make slaves of their wives and children. Women have been put to death in Wahabi villages for simply appearing in the streets. It is a penal offence to wear a silk garment. Men have been killed for smoking a cigarette, and as for the crime of alcohol, the most energetic supporter of the temperance cause in this country falls far behind them. Austere, intolerant, well-armed, and bloodthirsty, in their own regions the Wahabis are a distinct factor which must be taken into account, and they have been, and still are, very dangerous to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, and to the whole institution of the pilgrimage, in which our Indian fellow-subjects are so deeply concerned.

T.E. Lawrence(of Arabia), like Churchill hoped to give the more moderate Hashemites control of the Middle East. Like Lawrence and Churchill, most of the Muslim world opposed the absurd idea of giving the Wahhabi cult control of Islam’s holiest places.

So, why did they wind up giving control of Mecca and Medina to genocidal barbarians? They made this bad decision mostly due to the malign efforts of British spy Jack Philby (father of traitor Kim Philby):

Philby secretly began to favour Ibn Saud over Sherif Hussein as “King of the Arabs”, a difference with British policy, which was promising support for the Hashemite dynasty in the post-Ottoman world. On return Philby completed the crossing from Riyadh to Jeddah by the “backdoor” route, thus demonstrating Ibn Saud was in control of the Arabian highlands, whereas Sherif Hussein could not guarantee safe passage. Later he was awarded the Royal Geographical Society Founders Gold Medal for the desert journey. Back in Jeddah he met with an embarassed Sherif Hussein.

..Philby argued that Ibn Saud was a “democrat” guiding his affairs “by mutual counsel” as laid out in the Koran (Surah XLII. 37), in contrast to Lord Curzon’s “Hussein policy”. British policy on Arab affairs was wracked by rivalries between the Foreign Office and the India Office…

The Sauds proved that they were ‘in control’ of the area by stirring up trouble, then ‘fixing’ it to prove their worth. They’re still doing the same thing. Like Philby, most branches of our government like to pretend that our Saudi allies are ‘moderate’. They like to pretend that our alliance with the very worst elements is beneficial and necessary. While it may be beneficial to a few politicians and bankers, it’s not beneficial to the majority of the worlds population.

I agree that the multiculturalists are altruistic to the point that they will create a government subsidy to make the rope used to hang them. How can a thinking person overlook the insane approach to life that is Islam. Like Hillary Islam will lie to your face if it suites them. If not for their oil wealth te Saudis and their buddies would just be a bunch of irrelevant camel jockeys. Through our dependance on their oil we are giving them the “credible” position they enjoy in our culture. If we do not wake up you will be watching a veiled Katie Couric closing the evening news “Good evening and death to the infidels”.

Apr 17, 2008 - 8:22 am joe blough:

At this point the characterization of the sharia-apologists as useful idiots has to be called into question.

There are limits even to idiocy.

One has to allow for the possibility of conscious active malice.

==========

There are just too many obvious indicators out there of what is going on.

The islamists provide daily examples of their rapacious destructiveness and their readiness to lie, in any way needed, to disarm their victims and the potential defenders of their victims.

It’s headline news on a daily basis — and there’s nothing subtle about it.

What is worse is that the western world is only 60 years out from the battle with nazism and fascism, and even fewer years out from the murderous excesses of the likes of Mao and Pol Pot.

It’s too fresh and too easy to see.

One has to allow for the possibility that people who are apologizing and lobbying for the jihaddis do so out of hate and an appetite for destruction and suffering.

I.e. that they are just plain rotten on the inside.

I.e. beyond the proper tolerance of civilized people.

My neighbor is a moron, too. But I do not write articles about him. He is a moron anyway.

But, then, if I did, I would not try to give an impression which is different from reality.

My first hit in Google tells me, that the archbishop of Canterbury has said that the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK “seems unavoidable”. He said that “nobody in their right mind would want to see in this country the kind of inhumanity that’s sometimes been associated with the practice of the law in some Islamic states; the extreme punishments, the attitudes to women as well”. The bishop added that Orthodox Jewish courts already operated, and that the law accommodated the anti-abortion views of some Christians.

Now, you say that he has been “urging the introduction of Sharia law in Britain”. This is rather different from what has been in the news.

If you say somebody is a moron, you should tell exactly why, instead of telling us about your own fantasies.

Apr 18, 2008 - 2:20 am M.E.:

The concept of “useful idiots” must be specified. Comparison between communist “idiots” and Islamic “idiots” is good, but neither of them were idiots at least in the technical sense of the word. There were the individuals with extraordinary intellectual capacities: George Bernard Shaw, Bertrand Russell and especially H.G. Wells who said about Stalin “I have never met a man more fair, candid, and honest” and who felt the “sinister” image of Stalin was unfair or simply false. There is now another famous “idiot”: Avram Noam Chomsky. This “great” linguist, philosopher and political activist, who enjoys all the privileges of American democracy, and hates and fights it. He is also a Jewish anti-Semite who hates the State of Israel and exalts the Palestinian terrorists. I don’t speak about a “normal” anti-Semite (differently of from pathological Chomsky) and philoterrorist like Jimmy Carter. These example are enough to demonstrate that here we have a phenomenon much more complex than simple “idiotism” or intellectual inability. J.-F. Revel, the last great French political thinker, defined the mental quality of “useful idiots” as the “totalitarian temptation”. The fight of these “idiots” against the capitalism has a precise sense. The capitalism necessarily products prosperity and democracy, i.e. makes impossible revolution as the condition to create a totalitarian system, to transform a society of free citizens in a crowd of slaves. That is why the same “idiots”, which supported before communism, now support Islam in hope that their totalitarian dream at last will be realized.

Apr 18, 2008 - 5:36 am FP:

In response to M.E. immed above.

>”totalitarian”

What does that mean though?

Consistent application of laws in non “lawyery (non sophistry) ways”?

You types say “totalitarian along with “socialist” all the time as a supposed, on your part, trump card. But it doesn’t say anything pro or con about whatever the topic is.

“prosperity”

is relative.

Why would people just be against “prosperity”.
(Then you say back “’cause the are totalitarians”.)

“Democracy”

is a lie. The majority is not informable and crude and aggresive. (Ie no reason to liberate such a class.) When someone advocates fools get a say look for the people who are in a position to profit off of foolishness –There is the real “democracy”.

“free citizens ”

Like free range sheep –the informed electorate of fair minded justful citizens…

“anti semites” (jew or other wise)

Being anti zionist (Israel _nationalists_) –or even anti Israel (since it is a politically concoted british colonial pocket nation which doesn’t help jews much _since they have done well in western diaspora proper without_) isn’t necessarily “anti semite.”

=====
Are you denying:

Western society is pathological (mentally ill).
It is one glaring hypocrisy after another. It is held together with lies that ever shift. (And there is lots more, all generally rooted in hypocrisy and grand political conciets [”rasen d etas”] that are delusions –and lies) like nothing in history. It is not my forte to list them though.)

Are you denying that?

Your type’s response to my above is often “I just bought my kids a swing set(or food grill or sports tickets etc) and [it] is beautiful and therefore democracy is great” as though that stuff doesn’t happen in every system and period –with out the hypocrisy and delusion and mental illness.)

Apr 18, 2008 - 6:53 am tanstaafl:

One has to allow for the possibility of conscious active malice

Active malice is a good thesis.

It’s fashionable (and frequently even de riguer) inside the not so hallowed halls of academia to hate the US and what it stands for. And to hammer home into the captive audience’s collective skull all manner of phobias and isms, into the eternally tedious night. (often referred to these days as “teaching”)

However, I would quibble and say that all these subscribers to Active Malice are still and always Useful Idiots in the eyes of those whose agenda they espouse and promulgate.

Absolutely, whatever it takes to re-vitalize the totalitarian dream…that which has never worked and/or come to fruition in any human society, but, hey, the fact that it’s a completely unworkable idea at odds with human nature (even the Chicoms have essentially admitted that) should never stand in the way of re-introducing it anyway you can into the mix.

I like Jean François Revel’s essays very much. Refreshingly “un French”.

Sure Western society is mentally ill. Sure, the excesses of feminism promote man-hating more then they promote respect for women. Sure, the drift from family values in the West is causing all kinds of unanticipated problems. However, tell me where the heck else you would want to live. Name a specific non-western country (or an Asian country that hasn’t adopted Western institutions) and explain why you would rather be an ‘average’ person in that country rather than an ‘average’ person in the country with Western institutions.

From the psychoanalytical point of view FP is the lost case, but for the paranoiac al-qaedists he would be an ideal subject

From I have witnessed so far, Muslims operate on the level of misbehaving chimps.

The problem is that they are misbehaving in our jungle now.

The greatest achievements of humanity have manifested themselves in the American culture. Freedom (above all), opportunity, a life base on self-reliance, prosperity for those who will earn it and a system that welcomes anyone who wants to participate in that American dream.

The Leftists and terrorists (the same thing) who work to dismantle this will eventually be relegated to the trash bin of history. If not, then be prepared for a dark age of slavery and misery for all but a very few megalomaniacal despots.

We sit around worrying about Islamofascists. They’re small fry. I think the 800lb gorilla that we’re ignoring is China. How long it will be before the huge Chinese demand for oil becomes a factor. Relatively speaking, the middle east has a small population while China is overrun with people who want/need all that oil. It would be easy for the Chinese to march in their huge army and overwhelm, anyone who stands in their way. Not if but when, the Chinese start to seriously consider this the Muslims will ask the West for help. Ha! We need to prepare for the real possibility of there being no more middle eastern oil. The Chinese will take it and the muslims will be living in tents in the desert again.

Apr 19, 2008 - 5:15 pm Zarathustra:

To John West:
Zarathustra taught that all things and all beings take part in an eternal fight between Good and Evil. I’m sure that these by-products of our “ill” western society like leftists, terrorists (don’t forget that terrorism has been invented and systematically used by French Jacobin revolutionaries), obamites etc. will be thrown in the trash bin of History. It is possible to predict a return of a new Dark Age in Europe, but it is inconceivable that a free American citizen can renounce to his freedom. I’m also sure that the American society will know to fight all its illnesses. I’m conscious of the serious problem that Americans must face up. It is normal because every living society has problems and illnesses like every biological being. Only the despotic or totalitarian anti-societies (fascist and communist regimes or Islamic demono-cracies) don’t have problems or “illnesses”, because they are dead. So the only solution that the leftists and terrorists can propose is Death because only Death hasn’t problems.
