This is about campaign contributions, not ratings. Congresscritters care only about their next election, which here is a primary, not a general election.

So they're doing their best to sop up all available campaign contributions to deny those to potential primary opponents. That means appealing to the Democratic leftie base at all costs regardless of what this does to them in the general election.

Gerrymandering pretty much protects them in the general election. So only primaries count, for most of them, and that means protecting themselves against challengers to their left.

Julian Tepper - Please write more columns. We could all benefit from reading more of your words.

I have more respect for the neighborhood wino than I do Congress. The leering face of someone like Waxman makes me think I'm viewing a bad B-movie instead of something official and worthwhile.

I would love to be the one who told the congress critter or senator that if they want to ask the questions and not wait for an answer, then there would be no answers forthcoming. It is either wait for the answer or nothing. Anything else is just posturing by the congress critter or senator and they can do that on their own time. Thank you and goodbye. Then get up and walk out.

Congress is pathetic. Not because of the hearings... there should be alot more of them with serious outcomes for all that have been abusing this government. Democrats, Republicans, and the cheney branch. They all have gotten the ideals of this country turned around. We the People can do without our government. Our government cannot do without us. We not alot of republicans in this administration to servce long jails terms. And any democrat that dares think that is treatment only for the republicans and then does the same thing should get the same sentence.

Just the sight of some Senator or Congressman prefacing a loaded question with a speech slandering the witness has been enough to drop my respect for Congress through the floor. Then when said Congress-bully interrupts the first sentence of the answer with her next slander against the witness the raised finger goes into position.

There was egregious use of such slanders and interruptions in the hearings of the two most recent Supreme Court nominees. Yes, there was some legal support for holding those hearings, but the Senatorial behavior was abysmal regardless.

So Julian Tepper's essay is right on the mark. Such piggish behavior by legislators should absolutely be held to a minimum. Nothing else in this 21st century - even 'reality' shows and 'news' anchors - calls so strongly for a revival of the field of honor. Camera-hogging legislators might begin to understand accountability to the community of their fellow humans if they had to select a weapon and put their miserable lives on the line for their nasty partisan behavior.
