[...] Like the colors of the state’s largest university, Indiana is a Red State. Hoosiers have supported the Republican nominee for president ten consecutive times and in 16 of the past 17 General Elections going back to FDR’s re-election bid in 1936. And despite three congressional seats flipping to the Democrats in 2006, John McCain seems an agreeable enough candidate to avoid Indiana going blue this November. [...]

I have lived in Indiana since 1970 and I think it will be a cold day in hell before this state votes for Hillary Clinton.

Bayh and Ellsworth are as far left as they will go.

And what some of those of antiBush bumper stickers are more about the price of gas than same sex marriage.

Dowd is right that Bayh entrance into the race as a VP candidate would likely deliver the Hoosier state to the blue side of the ledger. In my opinion, it is a good thing to keep the state from leaning too far right or left. A balance could be good for Indiana if both sides of the aisle can work together instead of getting involved in the usual partisan garbage that they both seem to do so well.

A lot can happen between now and Election Day...including another terrorist attack. Red or blue, Indiana is still a great state for someone so obviously fed up with LA.

Ari Kaufman is one of our most unheralded (as of now) writers. His expanse arcs from history, to politics, to sports, to pure old Americana. A gem on all fronts.

Thanks for the comments so far. All of you hit on good points, especially John, Maria and Myron. And David, to answer your question, yes, at least two of the Democrat congressman that won in Indiana are of the "blue dog" or "moderate" type. This of course means they have little to no say on policy in Madama Pelosi's house. Then again, who knows how moderate they are as only one returned my emails seeking comments for this piece, and in the end, his press secretary rudely refused to comment after she considered the topic---as I noted in the piece.

Mr Kaufman makes an excellent point. People tend to think of Indiana as traditionally red. However, my experiences and interactions as a student and new resident of the state would give evidence to the contrary. Far too many times I have run into the angry anti-Bush bumper stickers that were the norm back when I lived in the east coast. When conversations with classmates have turned to politics (or even a remotely political topic), I have noticed that all too familiar liberal bias in our conversations which assumes that we are all on the same page as far as our "dislike" for the current government and conservative values. Perhaps my experiences are a reflection of the fact that I spend most of my time in the city and on a college campus. Whatever the case, it is interesting to continue to explore Hoosier politics given the importance of Indiana's role in next year's election.
