As regarding being a descendant of Muhammed: Said (sayeed): there are untold millions of such claimed descendants. After all, the family tree began 1400 years ago. That being said, Saids do enjoy special status.

Mookie is a direct descendant of Big Mo himself?
I guess the angel Gabriel must be too busy to look after his sorry Islamic rear end like he did for Uncle Mo back in the day.
Free advise to all Iranian women living near Qom- leave all your young daughters indoors, in case Mookie decides to follow in the footsteps of allah’s 5-star rapist and pillager.

Moqtada would only “retreat” if the situation in Iraq were looking negative for him.

Or at the behest of his Iranian handlers.

As for…

Sadr needed to burnish the theological and intellectual credentials he sorely lacks until he is ready to mount a challenge for the moral paramountcy of Shiism in Iraq.

It has long been noted that Moqtada (unlike his well known father who was assassinated by Saddam) absolutely lacked the credentials and education to legitimately hold the position of religious leader.

So attempting to use this period to “burnish” those credentials sounds legitimate.

Burnishing his “intellectual” credentials might be a more difficult slog, since Moqtada has never been known as the sharpest tack in the box.

We will, undoubtedly, be hearing more from him in the future, as the Iranians determine how best to use him for their (post American)Iraq positioning.

I believe it was a significant tactical mistake to let Sadr remain alive…

I agree with this. At one point, Moqtada was under indictment in Iraq for his role in assassination of a rival shi’ite cleric. And because of all the dillydallying and second guessing*, he was not pursued to the finish.

(*reminiscent of the Clinton administration’s failure to “get” Osama bin Laden)

Morton, something that you are leaving out of your calculation is that Mookie is a DIRECT linear descendant of Mohammed the Prophet. Killing him overtly would have a greater affect on Islam then if Jesus had a direct descendant and he was murdered. A little rat poison on his lamb chops would be very appropriate. I don’t think the CIA is good enough to work that out. Mossad is, as are most of the other spy agencies in the region.

So there is hope.

Richard — do you have any analysis or information on Mugniyah’s role in forming and running Sadr’s Mahdi Army?

I recently read that there is a link. If true, his neutralization would be a harbinger that someone is finally willing to give Sadr the same special treatment (finally).

I believe it was a significant tactical mistake to let Sadr remain alive, a mistake on our part which probably has cost hundreds of American lives. This was foolishly done because Shiite “politicians” assured us that a “political” solution with this Iranian gangster was the best way to approach Sadr (rather than a sniper bullet). These same Shiites were implicitly threatening is that killing Sadr would make Iraq explode in violence. Those “politicians” should also be selectively rooted out, it would seem, in order to purge the most compromised Iraqis who will remain the tools of Iranian subversion.
