Why Is the Justice Department Cozying Up to Islamic Radicals?
PJM reports exclusively on U.S. government participation in the convention of the Islamic Society of North America — a group with known ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.
Pajamas Media has obtained a copy of the following internal email sent to Justice Department employees:
Volunteers needed for unique opportunity. The civil rights division will be sponsoring an information booth at the islamic society of north america convention here at the washington convention center over the july 4th weekend. The division needs volunteers to work at the booth at times on July 3 through July 5. The ISNA convention expects 35,000 to 40,000 visitors and is a huge annual cultural event in the muslim community. The bazaar, where the divisions booth will be, will have more than 500 vendors and groups. The Division is looking for attorneys who can engage visitors in discussions about the Division and non-attorney staff, law students, and student interns who would be willing to hand out literature [sic] and answer basic questions. Acting counsel Eric Treene will hold an orientation session for all volunteers the week before, which will be particularly useful for non attorneys. If you are willing to volunteer for this unique opportunity, please submit your contavt [sic] information along with the dates that you can volunteer to the Human Resources Office email account.
What is the Islamic Society of North America? And what is the Justice Department doing soliciting civil service employees to work at this organization’s convention?
ISNA, according to the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT), was founded in 1981 “by Muslim Brotherhood members who had been part of the Muslim Students Association.” IPT explains:
ISNA was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the Hamas-support prosecution of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), which ended in the conviction of five former HLF officials on 108 counts. Federal prosecutors identified ISNA as a “member organization” of the “U.S. Muslim Brotherhood” on its list of Unindicted Co-conspirators and/or Joint Venturers.
This is not the first time ISNA and the Justice Department have gotten into the news. In 2007, similar conduct by the Justice Department drew the attention of Sen. Tom Coburn. IPT reported:
In 2007, Coburn pushed an amendment to the FY 2008 Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill which barred DOJ from underwriting any conferences with organizations identified “as an unindicted co-conspirator by the federal government in any criminal prosecution.” The Senate passed the provision but when the Senate and House of Representatives met to create one final bill, it was taken out.
The Washington Times reported in October 2007:
In a letter to then-Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, Reps. Peter Hoekstra, Michigan Republican and ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and Sue Myrick, North Carolina Republican, called the Justice Department’s involvement [with ISNA] a “grave mistake.”
“In light of the threat that our nation … is currently facing from radical jihadists, and because of the president’s commitment to fighting the war on terror on all fronts, we believe it is a grave mistake to provide legitimacy to an organization with extremist origins, leadership and a radical agenda,” the lawmakers said.
Coburn also published an 86-page report which detailed the Justice Department’s “outreach” efforts and called on the Justice Department to “withhold or rescind funding for or collaboration with any entities that do not advance the mission of the Department, which is the security and stability of the United States, including its culture, its people, and its form of government.”

Errrrrrrrrr.
Welllllllll.
The president is Muslim?
Jun 22, 2009 - 1:56 pm 2. Self-hating Boomer:And the obvious next question; what precisely do they intend to do there? The only thing that I can possibly think of is to make sure that they understand the full range of free government services and grants at their disposal.
When you have a government run by “community organizers”, of course, they’re going to reach out to their brethren.
Jun 22, 2009 - 2:07 pm 3. Sebastian Shaw:President Obama is the head of the radical Left which includes Reverend Wright & Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground; therefore, reaching out to other radicals is second nature. It’s quite logical really. Radicals understand other radicals.
This does not make it right. These radicals will see the Obama Administration as weak & indecisive.
Jun 22, 2009 - 2:16 pm 4. JRG3:The DOJ is reaching out because that is the Obama style of engagement. Administrations follow the lead of their boss. I’m surprised there’s not more of it.
Jun 22, 2009 - 2:32 pm 5. AtheistConservative:The answer is much more obvious: because Obama told us he’d do exactly this.
Obviously we all know that the majority of people who voted for Obama didn’t know or understand a thing about what he planned to do. Nevertheless, he told us he was going to be the ‘listening’ President who would ‘engage’ our enemies in a ‘dialogue’. The fact that it’s a stupid, self-destructive thing to do was pointed out many, many times. But people were too blinded by the star power.
Votes have consequences.
Jun 22, 2009 - 2:35 pm 6. John Samford:E.) All the above.
Jun 22, 2009 - 2:57 pm 7. Delia:The real question is why anyone is surprised?
after all, using useful fools to grab power isn’t exactly change. Nor is disposing of those useful fools once they stop being useful to you and become useful to your enemy.
Ayers projected 25 Million Americans would have to die before the revolution is complete.
A “useful fool” is anyone that thinks he(Bill Ayers) isn’t serious. They will be the first few million on that disposal list.
5. AtheistConservative:
“Votes have consequences.”
So does ‘not-voting’ unfortunately.
Jun 22, 2009 - 3:01 pm 8. Delia:6. John Samford:
“The real question is why anyone is surprised?”
I think the majority of us who post here on this blog are not surprised. We are sickend, saddened and disgusted beyond belief but not surprised. Many of us saw the train wreck coming. The incunabulum of 0bama’s beginnings showed us plenty of what he was about.
The kenspeckle is only visible to open eyes.
Jun 22, 2009 - 3:07 pm 9. Oscar the Grump:Soon all federal law enforcement will be controlled by Islamist.
Jun 22, 2009 - 3:28 pm 10. Steve Smith:Why Is the Justice Department Cozying Up to Islamic Radicals?
Because one man’s terrorist group is another man’s voting block.
Jun 22, 2009 - 3:39 pm 11. Paul M Hupf:It gets worse every day! Is the President the president of all the people with constitutional rights, or does he see himself as a messiah to change the United States and the world to fit his ideas of the way things should be. If the latter, what he hopes to achieve will be by dictate and not due process. He is increasingly cause for concern.
Jun 22, 2009 - 3:40 pm 12. Left Coast Mike:Why not? Obama has radicals for friends and mentors, and he is a muslim. Recently out of the closet. The election is over. He can stop pretending to be a Christian.
Jun 22, 2009 - 3:48 pm 13. dark helmet:Who cares? I feel so much less guilt now that we elected a black man. That’s all that matters. He looks black so shut up and quite being racists against a religion. It’s not like you can make a choice to be a muslim or something.
Jun 22, 2009 - 3:49 pm 14. Cybergeezer:Looks to me that Justice will need these guys to help quell the riots for the 2012 election; After all, they’re experienced in riot control in Iran!
Jun 22, 2009 - 3:56 pm 15. fred:None of this surprises me. I knew about this two years ago, because I go over to jihadwatch.org and get news and opinion from Robert’s site too. There are, apparently, people in the Bush and Obama administrations who have strange views about the “religion” of Islam. I sense the heavy hand of Saud in these matters. As in, a heavy hand that opens the check book and writes out the checks.
The Department of Justice has to know about the Muslim Brotherhood. If it doesn’t, this nation is in huge trouble.
Jun 22, 2009 - 4:04 pm 16. David Thomson:Politically correct elites believe that government agencies should only interact with “authentic” dark skinned people. The Islamic Society of North America is perceived to be a bit edgy and willing to speak truth to power. Moderate Muslims are obviously Uncle Tom sell-outs.
Jun 22, 2009 - 4:04 pm 17. Leatherneck:CAIR, and the Muslim brotherhood are enemys of these United States. As such, they should be attacked with the full weight of the American military.
POTUS is a BLT Marxist who bows and kisses the hand in charge of the kabba stone at zero point. So, do not expect this gathering of enemys within to be taken out just now.
Jun 22, 2009 - 4:11 pm 18. JED:Why would anyone think that the Apology Tour would end on foreign shores?
Jun 22, 2009 - 4:25 pm 19. SukieTawdry:Oh, didn’t you get the memo? We’re all Muslims now. Except for the Jews, but who cares about them. Death to Israel.
Jun 22, 2009 - 4:54 pm 20. Ms. Attitude:Hussein….’nuff said.
Jun 22, 2009 - 4:57 pm 21. Delia:19. SukieTawdry,
“Death to Israel.” Ouch. I wonder if 0bama will accidentally ’slip up’ and gaffe that one out in public? Can you imagine the MSM trying to clean that spectacle up?
20. Ms. Attitude:

Delia, I agree and in my own small way I’m fighting back.
I never use the O word and President in the same sentence.
It is always “The Usurper” or “Berry”.
Tis a small thing but it enough people start doing it we can astro-turf up the idea that Barry needs to cough up a birth certificate.
As an Illegal President, NONE of the bills he signs can be Law. As a non-natural born American, all the legislation he signs, the judges he appoints, etc, will be null and void once Congress changes hands. He knows that which is why He is in such a hurry. He wants to do as much damage as he can, since it will take longer to undo it after he is impeached.
By adding my one little drop of water, I’m hoping to start enough other people adding a drop or two here and there so in total it becomes a flood (astro-waterboarding?). The more time and money he spends avoiding releasing his non-existent birth certificate, the less Legislation will have to be undone post-impeachment.
Plus, if enough people do it, maybe they will trip over this;

There is a good story on the Counter Terrorism website that showcases the emergence from the sewers into the streets. It ties in well to this and fully explains the direction taken by DOJ. Jun 23, 2009 - 1:16 pm 38. systeMFailure:Eric Holder must want to attend Obie’s Weenie Fest and schmooze with the Iranian ambassadors for Islamic misogyny. After all, trying to take away your right to bear arms (clubs wielded by Muslim racists at Philly polling places is okay, though) and mirandize terrorists is very taxing. Sharing charocoaled swine products with the representatives of the repressive mullahs sends that all important message to Iranians being clubbed and shot in the streets that Obie is one cool dude who’ll wait to see how it all plays out before committing to calling tyrants bad, bad men. The DOJ will probably send a similar memos recruiting for “Mullah Fest,” “Clitorectomy Fest,” “Why Women are 2nd Class Citizens in Islam,” “Sharia Financing Compliments of the TARP/Bailout Frauds,” and “Golden Chains of the Saudi Kings.” Bo the star dog has nothing on Sirius the dog star and July 4, 1776, folks. Jun 23, 2009 - 7:58 pm 42. Melvin Keck:Ms. Rubin, as is so often the case, you stop well short of the rhetoric needed to get your point across. Our nation depends upon the extremist inspiration provided by the frantic ravings of those imbued with the intellect and vision necessary to save us from our pacifist delusions. Look at history and your answer is there. Churchill, Hitler (the list goes on and on), were fiery orators who inspired with words and images of doom brazen and inflated enough to motivate the shrinking masses. Dig deep, dear. Find the delicious fear and loathing worthy of our nation’s great history of bombing first, asking questions later. Thank you for your willingness to stand on a wall. God speed in your quest to purge from our ranks those who would coddle, nay NURTURE, our enemies. If not for those like yourself, we would be relegated to the losing ranks of thoughtful, patient people seeking peace and compassion rather than to the company of like-minded patriots bent on upholding the American traditions of paranoia, Xenophobia and war-mongering. Raise high the sword of conquest. Drive deep it’s steely point into the black hearts of the infidels masquerading as America-lovers. Yours is the honor. Yours is the glory. For those about to war, we salute you!! Amen!!!

A booth with information on civil rights for American citizens is now considered “cozying up” to “radicals”???
Wow – is there anything that you people don’t wring your hands and shriek like a 12-year-old girl at? I’m surprised there’s not a tin foil shortage from making all your hats…….
Jun 24, 2009 - 10:19 am 47. systeMFailure:The discrimination and oppression of women and children in fundamental Islam should concern every fair and freedom-loving American. OReally’s tack is to discredit the messenger instead of debating the issue. When the DOJ either spends as much time and manpower on currying favor and dispensing their legal advice to the Mormon, Hindu, Apostolic, Jewish, Wicckan and other religious communities at their cultural events on 4th of July holiday OR dismisses preferential treatment of any and all religious communities, then taxpayers will shut up. Until then, as long as the taxpayers are supporting the DOJ and this ‘volunteer’ outreach (specious terminology), we have a right to question why a religious community tied to terrorists and with a well-demonstrated history of recent human rights abuses, civil right abuses and racism requires such special service from the DOJ. I don’t remember Eric Holder being as ’supportive’ of recent requests for a Quo Warranto investigation into President Who’s dual British/American citizenship at birth as he has been to Muslim thugs at polling places in Philly, terrorists at Gitmo, and ISNA. Conflict of interest seems to be a phrase that sums it all up, imho. But, OReally, since we’re on the topic of shortages, at least the value of aluminum has appreciated more than the price of the white cloth needed to make the pacifist’s flag. That Americans can exercise their right to question what their government does is something we have seen is sadly lacking in the mullahocracy of Iran.
Jun 24, 2009 - 2:56 pm 48. paleotn:47 systeMFailure: “OReally’s tack is to discredit the messenger instead of debating the issue.”
Not really. I think his “12 year old girl” analogy was quite apt. Calling a moron a moron isn’t really “attacking the messenger. It’s called being accurate.
And since when did you nutters give a rats patootie about discrimination and oppression of women?
Oh, I love your last sentence. “That Americans can exercise their right to question what their government does is something we have seen is sadly lacking in the mullahocracy of Iran.” Ummm…wasn’t that considered Treason amongst the wingnuttery for the last 8 or so years? Sounds to me like you righties and the “mullahocracy” have so much in common.
Jun 24, 2009 - 7:04 pm 49. AlphaMail:CONNECTING THE DOTS
So the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department will be sponsoring a booth at the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) convention on July 5th. Apparently the feds are attempting to assuage and improve relations with the Muslim community. On the surface this kind of governmental outreach appears worthy—mending relations, building friendships and such—and it seems difficult to condemn. It’s simply an isolated, singular event, a dot if you will. Or is it? I’ve noticed liberals seem to have difficulty with the childhood game of connect-the-dots. Whether the dots, once connected, reveal an angel or a terrorist, our leftist friends inevitably seem to end up with a flat line. Let me add a few more dots to this seemingly benign event, so we might see a bigger, more definitive picture.
When you scrutinize the ISNA, you might note their president, Dr. Ingrid Mattson, a born-again Muslim who got her P.H.D. in Islamic Studies at (of all places) the University of Chicago. She was at the same U of C campus, at the same time, as Palestinian-American Rashid Khalidi, once head of AAAN (the Arab American Action Committee). During this period, Khalidi, a Jew-basher and one-time PLO spokesman for Yassar Arafat, was director of the University’s ‘Center for Middle Eastern Studies’, a popular gathering spot for campus Islamic and middle-Eastern students. This is the same Khalidi who openly admits he was a close neighbor and longtime friend with both Barack and Michelle Obama, as well as their other nearby neighbors, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. It’s also the same Khalidi, who organized a political fundraiser for Barack Obama, and who accepted $75,000 for his AAAN, from Ayers and Obama, when the two sat side by side dispensing funds, as deliberating board members on the Woods Fund of Chicago.
Mattson is a vocal critic of Israel, she rationalizes Taliban actions against women, she is a traditionalist on Sharia law, and she likens Christians who criticize radical Islamists to Osama bin Laden. Her ISNA publication matches her personal views: “The hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say, “O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him”, and, “I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim.”
On August 24, 2008, Ingrid Mattson was one of four keynote speakers chosen by Barack Obama to speak and pray, at an inter-faith gathering at the Colorado Convention Center, during the last Democratic National Convention. As if that wasn’t enough of a testimony to hypocrisy, on January 21, 2009, Ingrid Mattson was chosen yet again, along with other clergy, to deliver an inaugural prayer during the Presidential Interfaith National Prayer Service, at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Incredulous as it sounds, the Obama administration wants its federal employees to put on a happy face, and go meet-and-greet Ingrid.
Added to this, a couple of months ago, the Obama administration quietly worked with U.S. Representative Keith Ellison, the Muslim Democratic congressman from Minnesota who was sworn into office with his hand on a Quran, along with J. Saleh Williams, program coordinator for the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association, to ‘fast track’ a fairly long list of possible Muslim appointees, for employment consideration in the new administration. I haven’t been able to find any evidence of the administration searching for any Christian, Jew, Buddhist, or Sikh, (never mind a list of them), but I’m still looking.
Also, early into his new job as Commander-in-Chief, Obama asked a federal judge to toss out a $6.6 billion class-action lawsuit against Iran, brought by the fifty-two Americans held hostage 30 years ago at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. The American diplomats and military personnel were held by a group of Islamic students, including the current Iranian leader, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is now bludgeoning his own protesting citizens to death in the streets. The captive Americans attested to brutal beatings, lack of food, minimal clothing, and non-existent medical care. I regret they couldn’t have been housed at Guantanamo Bay, where they would have received all that, plus an exercise yard, showers, prayer time, a Bible, and Red Cross visits. I’m wondering if it’s just me connecting the dots, or is anyone else beginning to get the picture?
