Jimmy Carter, Please Tell Us About the Cash

Former President Carter took his anti-Israel roadshow to Brandeis University today, refusing to debate Alan Dershowitz and agreeing to respond to students only via a “discussion” responding to 15 pre-selected questions.

We have already heard far too much from Carter about his notions regarding the Middle East. What we have not heard from him is an explanation of why, exactly, he is so comfortable with the Carter Center — his main base of operations — taking millions from places such as Saudi Arabia. Or just how many millions that sort of donor base really accounts for.

Earlier this month, I wrote an article for National Review, exploring some of the questions raised in a number of articles by other analysts and reporter querying the Carter Center’s Middle Eastern funding. My piece, “The Question of Carter’s Cash,” is now linked online on NRO. Back on Jan. 10, I sent a list of follow-up questions to the Carter Center, asking, again, for details on some of the money; a reasonable request, one might think, especially in view of the Carter Center’s praise of its own operations to promote transparency for others. They got the questions. But no answer yet.

And yet, why would the Plains-speaking simpleton ever need to disguise his views? It’s easy to imagine Carter’s heartfelt response: “I take millions from the Saudis because the Saudis want to help me solve the problems the Israelis are causing in the Middle East.”

Dostoevsky tells us that the man incapable of shame has no reason to lie, while the man incapable of irony lacks the liar’s power of invention. Carter is capable of neither; compounding his earnest beliefs with lies would hardly make them more poisonous.

You aren’t likely to get an answer. It appears that Jimmy in his dotage is more inclined to preach, not stading at the pulpit, but rather, while seated in the pew with his hand is still in the collection plate.

Hi spynnie…nice post. Not to disagree with my buddy…but Carter is fully aware of what is truth and what are lies.

He is incapable of shame, but he has plenty of reason$ to become the mouthpiece for revisionist history when it comes to Israel and the Palestinians.

And while Carter’s grasp on irony is in the living it, rather than inventing it…that also has it’s own time for braising.

Carter has no earnest beliefs, he has “earning..est” beliefs. That which earns him the most dollars, earns him the most grandstanding spotlight in his devolving irrelevancy, that which brings him back to the fore…from the aft of his dwindling existence…is what he will try to peddle.

Poisonous? You bet. Snake oil with real venom…it’s on the menu at Dr. Jimmy’s traveling sideshow. Let’s see how many of PT Barnum’s favorite subjects show up to buy a bottle.
