Outta the Ball Park, Sarah!

That was the most refreshing speech from an American politician in years. She did it with humor, and grace, and steel. There were loads of good lines – one of my favorites, that the American presidency “is not supposed to be a journey of personal discovery.”

What a relief, to hear from a national pulpit such a litany of sweet sense.

Watching the dynastic politics swirling around the White House these past 20 years – Bush, Clinton, Bush, (Clinton) — has become wearing. Listening to the collectivist chant of “We are the change we seek” has been alarming.

John McCain has picked for a running mate someone who gives me real hope for the years ahead, and a new generation. Sarah Palin talked tonight about an America of individual responsibilities, a country proud to win its wars and defend its interests  – not a vale of groaning victims waiting for rations of relief from Washington.

On Obama: “What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to take more of your money…give you more orders from Washington…and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world. America needs more energy… our opponent is against producing it.”

We can expect quite a dogfight ahead. Her joke about the difference between hockey moms and pitbulls — “lipstick” — was not cosmetic. Tonight, clearly, directly, Palin looked straight at the Obama campaign and laid out the real issues. Whatever the smears and attacks and discoveries ahead, that kind of clarity has got to be good for American politics.

As for teen pregnancy, does anyone still think that’s the defining issue of this election?

Gov. Palin’s speech tonight brought to mind, of all things, U2’s Bono introducing the band’s cover of “Helter Skelter”: “This is a song Charles Manson stole from the Beatles. We’re stealing it back.”

In this analogy, Palin is Bono, Obama is Manson, and Hillary Clinton is the Beatles. Obama stole Hillary’s thunder in the Democratic primaries; now along comes Palin to steal not only Obama’s own thunder, but also the thunder Obama had stolen from Hillary. By the time 2012 rolls around, Hillary may well find herself being the “other” woman in the campaign; for all we know she may even (heaven forbid) be up against a female incumbent.

Sarah is the most refreshing person to enter politics in my lifetime. She is the living embodiment of a strong conservative woman. I was excited to vote for McCain anyway, but with Gov. Palin on the ticket I am absolutely ecstatic. Her folksy charm and great sense of humor is completely irresistible. With the exception of the hardcore left-wing partisans, I think Gov. Palin could attract Americans of all stripes to this ticket.

I…don’t know how most Americans will receive it. I missed the speech last night. When I read it on paper, I liked it. But, when I watched it this morning, or at least the snippets I saw on TV, I got a different reaction. It seemed a little, well, smarmy. And, maybe because I only saw the parts where she was being sarcastic, and I didn’t see the whole thing in context. I can see why people on the right like it…just not sure about how independents might feel.

On the other hand, there was definitely kind of a Reaganesque quality to her speech. And, I’m interested now to hear more from the unscripted Palin. I wonder when we’ll see her on the late night talk shows…and Meet the Press. And, I wouldn’t be surprised if her debate with Biden will get more viewers than the Biden-Obama debates.

Words of a deserate liar.

When your candidate is a naive panderer, who does not understand the strategic impotance of supporting Iraqis in their struggle to defeat the same people (Islamists) who attacked us on 9/11 you make things up.

Victory is now in sight: in Iraq and Washington. In a perfect world the vast majority of Americans would prefer that Obama withdraw from the latter rather than have the country resile from its obligations as leader of the free world.

“a speech by a lying stupid creationist book burner”

Nick,

Try to follow this:

What Palin said about the supposed dispute between there being a creator of the universe and “the theory” of evolution supposedly showing there is no independent force behind the creation of the universe [a/k/a "The Big Bang"] is the following:

“Teach both. You know, don’t be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important, and it’s so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.”

Your side doesn’t want to teach creation, which 90% of all human beings, throughout a million years of human life, have always believed in, even through today.

Now I ask you.

Who is closer to the book burners? You or Palin?

Sometimes I don’t know why we bother arguing with you ignoramuses. You’ll never get it.

Sep 4, 2008 - 5:03 am 31. BC:

Palin in her speech said, “For a lifetime, John McCain has inspired with his deeds.”

Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but don’t those “deeds” include cheating on his wife, Carol, the first one, the mother of three of his kids, and the one who stayed loyal to him while he was a POW? The one who also very unfortunately got disfigured in a auto-accident 3 years prior to McCain returning home? His current wife Cindy was then a former rodeo beauty queen and very wealthy and McCain pursued her while still married to Carol because he didn’t like what the accident had done to Carol’s appearance.

For some reason, I’m not finding this deed particularly inspiring.

Nor did I find his birthday cake photo op with Bush on August 29, 2005 — the day of Katrina — very inspiring either (and the cake was left behind uneaten). And ditto with his abandonment under GOP party pressure of his old, trusted friend Joe Lieberman for VP in favor of a rushed, purely marketing driven choice of Palin.

Sarah showed everyone last night that the left has more to do than just bash her on blogs and the media. Sarah is a woman that can’t be intimidated and now that she’s presented her case to the people, I think she has a lot more backing than just the conservative base.

the success is a success and only the worried left are saying that it isn’t so.

it’s so funny that after the speech, Olberman was trying hard to downplay Sarah while making comments like “Reese Witherspoon’s character on the movie election.” then there’s that lesbo analysts on Chris Matthews saying “the inflection and pronunciation of her words like ‘nuclear’ shows she’s a novice.”

Tom Brokaw’s declaration of indignation was also laughable last night - “I was struck by the stab at the media!” like they are so freakin innocent! what morons!

ONLY THE IDIOT LEFT will say such things. everyone else that’s in a normal frame of mind agree that Sarah took her critics to task and smacked it out of the ballpark!

GO MCCAIN/PALIN!

Sep 4, 2008 - 5:34 am 38. George Clarke:

When I said to Nick that 90% of people throughout all of human existence on this planet have believed in the creation of the universe by an outside force (which has essentially been confirmed by science with proof of an irreversible, i.e., non-recurring big bang) I should have added that this 90% obviously included Charles Darwin himself, who prayed to God many times and who intially intended to become a man of the cloth. In fact at the end of his life Darwin said this:

“In the last year of his life, when the Duke of Argyll suggested to [Darwin] that certain purposes seen in nature ‘were the effect and the expression of mind,’ [i.e., the Creator's Mind] Charles looked at him very hard and said, “Well, that often comes over me with overwhelming force; but at other times,” and he shook his head vaguely, adding, “it seems to go away.”

Conflicted? Yes. But an Unbeliever who could scientifically prove there was no Creator? No. Kant of course proved such proof was beyond the access of Human Reason or observation.

“Why was she dressed like a yeoman from from the original “Star Trek”? And what was with the “ballistic attack” style cone-shaped hairdo?”

true to the liberal mold, they now attack, again, with the elitist mantra that Sarah Palin is not one of them.

It always amuses me how the left attack Sarah with type of argument. how she’s dressed, how she wear her hair. I wonder why the elitists thinks that would make the regular voters would agree with that argument at all.

one of the things that Sarah was able to do last night was to shine a light on the fact that her criticas were nothing more than elitists that can’t represent the hard working Americans that will decide this election. the “Scrantonites” that the elitist left have labeled “bitter people that clings to their guns and religion” can relate more to Sarah Palin than the ivy league candidate that loves to “nuance” every issue that are on the minds of all “Scrantonites” during this election campaign.

having seen the reaction of the elitist media pundits and leftist attack dogs, it clearly shows the panic, the struggle to keep their heads above water and keep their ivy league leftist candidate’s sinking campaign in the minds of the Scrantonites they so try to get into their fold.

quite amusing to see and shows how the tide has turned against the elitist in this country.

It’s amazing that Republicans scrach their heads at the negitive light surrounding Palin, are they that misguided as to why? That lack of perceptiopn alone should make anyone realize how out of touch and high on themselves they really are. America can take no more of the self rightousness of the right. If they could look at themselves in the mirror they’ed see how cracked they are. I like Obama’s background and real focus on what needs to change and be fixed. That’s why Obama is going to win, cause “with McCain it’s more of the same”.

Sep 4, 2008 - 9:06 am 70. Mabel:

She did great and I honestly believed she was the best choice for McCain…the one with the most chances of paying off.

However, I’m not sure it will be enough and attacking the media so openly might not have been wise. Committed conservatives and liberals have made up their minds. This election will be decided by the independents and the uninformed…they hear all this noise about her scandals and sinks in…like Coulter says, it takes a lot of effort in the average voter to discern the truth from the propaganda…maybe the media will be shamed into shape like with Hillary but I doubt it.

They will continue to paint her as a “weirdo” (book burning, creationist, NRA member, right winger, etc, etc.). I do not agree with Palin’s every belief but neither with my closest friends and family…that’s the point of tolerance. I think the american public has been so brainwashed with the liberal cultural values that they might reject McCain’s ticket as too extreme…I hope I am wrong.

P.S. Let’s ignore the nuts in here unless they advance an intelligent argument. It’s attention what they want after all.

I doubt Dems would call their pick (Zerobama) a “Hail Mary”, but it DOES reek of the last vestiges of a dying, rotting Party.

You’re being very gracious when you write: “She did it with humor, and grace, and steel.”

Humor and steel, I’ll grant. But grace? Not sure you can call all that mocking, deserved or not, “graceful.”

I missed her speech last night but I just watched it online. She’s really good - the left should be scared of her, and they are. Mr. Hussein Obama is absolutely toast this November. I was already for McCain but now I’m positively fired up!

Sep 4, 2008 - 9:44 am 79. jay:

Jonathan, Give it up. These leftist posts are now just plain boring. I got half way through yours and gave up. Although watching you folks squirm is kinda funny it’s starting to bore me.

Sep 4, 2008 - 9:46 am 80. WOOT:

I got an e-mail from a socialist buddy of mine this morning who was VERY impressed with Palin’s speech last night. If he was, believe me, the Hillary crowd will be going to the polls by the millions to vote for Palin…..after all, the democratic party, the media and the narcissist Edwards made Obama the nominee instead of her. TIME TO PAY THEM BACK!

LMAO! keep piling it on. the more leftist attacks we see the more of their elitist nature comes out. yes, we know that Sarah is not an ivy league product and the messiah is. we all know that and the “Scrantonites” that ‘ol Barry backstabbed in San Francisco know that as well!

Sep 4, 2008 - 10:22 am 82. Ditto:

BC said: …don’t those “deeds” include cheating on his wife… who stayed loyal to him while he was a POW…because he didn’t like what the accident had done to Carol’s appearance. For some reason, I’m not finding this deed particularly inspiring. Nor did I find his birthday cake photo op with Bush on… the day of Katrina — very inspiring either. And ditto with his abandonment under GOP party pressure of his old, trusted friend Joe Lieberman for VP

BC you’re right, of course, that his first marriage was McCain’s biggest failure of his private life and he’s been man enough to stand up and say it out loud. By the way, his first wife and he are very dear friends to this day and she (unlike some) knows the full situation and has bears no ill will against him. So yeah, he’s human. Perhaps one of the best things about John McCain as a viable candidate is the fact that all of his past misdeeds are known and have been examined thoroughly already. The press is bored with them. That’s because it’s old news BC - get over it.

Whether Bible stories are true or instructional parables, King David was a man after God’s own heart… not because of his marital problems but because of his character in public service. Look at Sen. McCain’s public service for the good of the country and Gov. Palin’s “servant’s heart” and then look at Sen. Obama. He’s a rock star with an ego the size of China and has no business bringing that kind of “change” to the White House.

And why is it that President Bush and Sen. McCain having a picture taken rankles so badly? New Orleans’ own local government did nothing to protect citizens against Katrina, but all the left seems to be able to do is throw the spotlight on Washington. The local government allowed hundreds of school buses to sit unused and did nothing to marshal its own forces to get people out. All the while high school football teams played their usual Friday night games before Katrina struck. I suppose G.W. called and told them that’s what they should do? Methinks thou doth protest o’ermuch.

Abandonment of his old friend Joe, huh? How perfectly “liberal” of you to think the V.P. seat should go to an old friend out of loyalty rather than to the person the country will benefit from having in that position the most. Under GOP party pressure? You haven’t been keeping up with the news, have you, BC. LOL McCain proved that actions speak louder than words when he chose Gov. Palin. He “interviewed” her by examining her record of her work and the way she carried her responsibilities and her ability to stand up to corruption and pork-barrel spending and “good ol boy” beltway politics.

Interesting word, abandonment… isn’t like that other guy running from POTUS who says one thing out of one side of his mouth, and another thing from the other? The guy who turned his back on Sen. Clinton and all her supporters? The guy who “was never a Muslim”? Or is that different somehow…

It was classic. I listened to snips of the speech on the radio this morning on the way in to work and it was just as good as it was last night. She’s genuine. She’s tough. She’s smart. She’s conservative. And best of all she is a good communicator and really connects with the audience.

I loved it!!!

Where do I vote! McCain, adding Sarah was nothing short of brilliant.

To her “First Dude” and family, they cannot attack Sarah directly so they are going to try to trick you to get you to trip up and bring her down. Beware, the witches and goblins will soon be upon you and your friends.

Game on!

To Ditto: No, sorry, Lieberman was McCain’s choice, with Tom Ridge as the main alternative consideration. And when it was looking like this was going to be the case, McCain got all sorts of crap from right blog sites, commentators, evangelical leaders, and the likes of Karl Rove and Robert Novak. Palin as a VP had only been a fringe option pushed by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and a vocal group of right bloggers, and given how very, very little contact McCain had with Palin beforehand and how cursory and rushed the vetting process was, obviously it was a last minute, and probably very reluctant choice.

To Palin’s credit, she delivered a good sounding speech last night (although, if you review it on YouTube, it comes off as a bit dopey and rather tacky in its Republican business as usual smears of Obama), but she’s an empty suit (or dress) with nothing in her history whatsoever to indicate that she, along with McCain, would have anything good and constructive to bring to a US government in much rougher shape than anyone realizes thanks to nearly 8 years of Bush.

How long until the ‘calendar girls’ scenario, where some intrepid media wolf lies to an innocent and well meaning friend or family member to get a reaction from them, and takes the photo or tape or video triumphantly back to the network so they can RUIN PEOPLE”S LIVES?

I hope those people are surrounded by a couple of battalions of infantry and an electric fence… with Dobermanns inside it.

Because the media will stop at NOTHING to ruin that woman.

Kevin: the “smart” ones are not necessarily socialists, but people who understand the basic needs of other people. I know I’m no Dale Carnegie, but you have to be sarcastic to get people’s attention. I call idiots people who think that having wars is a solution. WWII was a real war. Iraq is in invasion. The idiot leaders were too lazy to get proper intelligence, and cooperation from allies. Now they’re wasting $10 billion a month that could be funding our real needs. Who’s getting this money?? Add all the other problems and one of these days we’re going to get our asses beaten by countries like China . . .

Sep 5, 2008 - 3:28 am 94. god:

Dave: you’re right. That’s going to happen real quick. But the problem in not just the media. It’s the mindset of the lurid public who base their opinions on looks, sex life, and people defects rather than their brains and ability to do things right. This country is not different from a Banana Republic. And the media knows that . . .

Nick. Do you just troll around and post the same thing over and over? All I see from you are one line insults with no substance. If you want to attack someone it’s your right. However the burden of proof lies with you to prove your statments. That’s the beauty of the 1st amendment while you have freedom of speech You can’t spread lies… But you also have the responsibility to know that others are going to think the issues can be handled in better ways… They are killing you right now because they convey their message clearly… Try improving your message rather than just using trite one liners
