The Quotable Robert Reich, Revisited

Rich Lowry spots this howler from Robert Reich in Salon:

Angry right-wing populism lurks just below the surface of the terrible American economy, ready to be launched not only at Obama but also at liberals, intellectuals, gays, blacks, Jews, the mainstream media, coastal elites, crypto socialists, and any other potential target of paranoid opportunity.

But then, as Jonathan Rauch noted in 1997 when he compared incidents that Reich described in his memoirs with the audio and video tapes of the actual events, Reich enjoys a rather rich and Oliver Stone-meets-Walter Mitty fantasy life.

Update: In the comment thread below, “Whisky” offers a bracing shot of Reich’s own very recent moment of racist populism.

1. whiskey:

Wasn’t Robert Reich the guy who said “No White Guys Allowed” on the spendulus bill? Because they’re “evil?”

That guy?

“paranoid opportunity.”

Note to Robert Reich: put away your copies of the works of Richard Hofstadter. You are getting ahead of yourself. Best to stay with the comic books.
