Silicon Graffiti: “Tea For Five: The July 5th San Jose Tea Party Protest”

On the weekend of July 4th, the latest round of Tea Party Tax Protests swept the nation. We attended the San Jose Tea Party, held on Sunday July 5th at the intersection of Stevens Creek and Winchester Boulevards, and interviewed Richard Geno, president of the the Conservative Forum of Silicon Valley, for his take. We’ll also flash back to the April 15th Tea Party in San Jose, as well as the birth of the meme by CNBC’s Rick Santelli, and a CNN reporter who decided to make herself part of the news, rather than simply report it:

Where were these protesters the last 8 years?

Ed:
They were called Porkbusters back then.

Jul 8, 2009 - 9:18 am 3. WhatsRight:

The last 8 years didn’t result in a $3 trillion deficit! Get a brain! Barry is a social engineer who happens to be a full blown marxist! deal w/ it! we’re not going away! :)

Jul 8, 2009 - 9:22 am 4. ObamaRepublican:

Well yes it did; it is historical revisionism on par with Holocaust denial to say that President Obama caused the recession.

But, I guess that’s why I’m an Obama Republican. I don’t think the GOP’s base is rational anymore.

Jul 8, 2009 - 9:43 am 5. ObamaRepublican:

BTW, the Democrat neighbor of mine who “converted” me told me in October last year that the GOP would try to rewrite history and make Americans believe that Obama — who was not president the last 8 years — caused the recession.

I was skeptical at this claim but just a few months later my neighbor seems to be right. I think Democrats are more rational and faithful to science, progress and equality.

Obama Republican? Why not go with Marxist Libertarian?

Jul 8, 2009 - 9:47 am 7. John the Libertarian:

There is no such thing as an Obama Republican.

Don’t be simplistic. Obama didn’t cause the recession. He’s just making it far worse than it has to be.

Jul 8, 2009 - 9:49 am 8. Patrick S:

Regarding “Well yes it did; it is historical revisionism on par with Holocaust denial to say that President Obama caused the recession.”

I don’t say that. I say that the recession took hold 1.5 years after YOUR Democrats took control both of houses of Congress. And as THEY define and approve spending/budget cutting, THEY, including your Golden Calf Obama, own it.

She winks, and gestures as if she’s running a raffle stand at a PTA carnival and flirting with the local State Farm insurance agent. These Palins and their extended family, are, well, like the Clampetts who descend on Beverly Hills. (cf. “Trig”, “Piper” and “Bristol”-the Alaskan equivalents of “Jethro Bodine”, “Jed”, and “Granny”). And if you are to have scandals in your trailer-park family, let them be elegant ones-cf. Ted Kennedy, Ted, Kennedy, Jr., Michael Kennedy, William Kennedy Smith, David Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Jr. and their assorted sins such as drug convictions, drug overdoses, serial sexual predations, loss of life, etc-At least sin and quote Niebuhr, or discuss alleviation of the sin in Palm Beach or Hyannis Port.

Obamarepublican, No one wants to “convert” you back to the Republican party. If you go to most of the Tea Parties, you will find that the participants are growing in variety.

Most of them are NOT supporting the current Republican Party. You may find some looking to change it from within. Change it to a party that actually listens to their constituants.

Look how John Cornyn was treated: http://michellemalkin.com/2009/07/06/video-sen-cornyn-gets-an-earful/

We are truly Mad as Hell and are not willing to take it anymore.

The Tea Parties that I have attened have had more of a “Let’s throw ALL of the Bum’s out” feeling than anything resembling any party affiliation.

Go to a Tea Party, who knows it might be your cup of tea. most people will forgive your Obama vote if you are willing to listen to their point of view and use critical thinking to evaluate where America is heading…

It’s not that Obama caused these job losses. It’s that his “remedy” will sink us into hyper inflation and a depression; but hey, that’s the plan. That’s the plan. That’s his plan. Cripple and control.

Jul 8, 2009 - 10:32 am 15. jay:

obama republican, you’re partly correct. We should have been out in the street over Republicans siding with Democrats to pass Ted Kennedy’s education bill and by passing medicaid part b.

We also should have gotten ANWR passed, it would be producing or very close to producing now. Providing jobs and revenue without a stimulus package.

The Republicans have been part of the problem, whenever they have decided to co-opt Democratic policies by agreeing to a lite version they have given cover to the socialists/Democrats.

Jul 8, 2009 - 10:32 am 16. jay:

Very helpful kepler, have a disagreement with someone, immediately call them racists.

That really helps establish a dialogue with your opposition.

Or does the President’s offer to negotiate with others only include Dictators?

Jul 8, 2009 - 10:42 am 17. ObamaRepublican:

Jay, I think you are right. Republicans seem to be illogical in their opposition to common sense things that require big government, like protecting our country from terrorists and disease.

Jul 8, 2009 - 10:52 am 18. DanK:

To John the Libertarian: No such thing as an Obama Republican? Really?? So, how do you explain 53-46? How do explain Spector? Powell? Oh, these guys are RINOs, right? I was a registered Republican and, regretfully, voted for GWB. I voted for Obama just to send a message to the real conservatives: Lose the jesus/fetus fetish and stop worshiping the naughty librarian as some “new breed” of Republican. As a card-carrying member of the LP, I hope this opens a major rift in the GOP that surges the LP beyond their dismal 1-2% showing. No Obama Republicans? I am an Obama Republican!

Ed: I don’t think Specter counts as a RINO these days. ;)

Hey Icarr, you don’t know the LP very well do you? About 25% of LP members are registered Republicans and support conservative agendas at various levels. Why is it that the Palin/Limbaugh/Hannity/Levine arm of the “new GOP” can’t understand that conservatives aren’t happy with the direction the GOP is going and are bailing out or dropping out…thanks Gov! Come out of your cave and evolve (I know, scary word for you GOP’rs).

“BTW, the Democrat neighbor of mine who “converted” me told me in October last year that the GOP would try to rewrite history and make Americans believe that Obama — who was not president the last 8 years — caused the recession.”

I know your just a feeble troll trying to get people’s hackles up by telling some feeble story about your “conversion”, but I’ll take the bait and respond to your worthless post anyway just to clear up any lingering confusion that you or any other liberals tuning in might have.

The recession is not Obama’s fault. Nobody has claimed that it was. The recession(depression really) was caused by the accumulation of far too much debt by consumers and financial instruments, something that has been building up for the past few decades at least. No government players could rationally be held responsible for this accumulation of private debt. The reality is that America, and much of the western world along with it, is not nearly as wealthy as it thinks it is. Money is not wealth.

So what has been Obama’s policy prescription to help ease this depression? Piling unprecedented public debt on top of a problem that was created by debt in the first place. Creating trillions of dollars in new obligations to foreign powers and simultaneously, and this is maybe the worst part of it, not significantly aiding in the creation of future wealth at all. The debt levels are crippling and the United States government risks default within the next decade. Social Security will be in the hole by 2016. Taxpayers will pay year after year to prop up Chrysler and GM.

If you’re not worried about the real world effects of these policies, you’re beyond help.

What I found kind of funny was that on the northwest corner, there was some female holding on to a large sign that said: “Support a single-payer system” or something to that effect.

In St.Clair Shores, we had a Tea Party on the 4th and had about 300 people show. It was very educational to find out how Americans feel about this government of ours. Can’t wait till 9-12-09, get ready DC we’re coming!

Jul 9, 2009 - 7:19 am 27. tomw:

The recession may not be Obama’s fault, but the following depression will be his.

As noted by some long forgotten wit, when you are in a deep hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin. Piling debt upon debt will not get you out of debt.
The D’s maneuvered us into high gas prices last summer by blocking even the thought of ANWR, offshore and shale. They wanted to win the election by ruining the economy and making the populace hurt. They succeeded, and as VP Biden noted, the recession is WORSE than they thought. The one they manufactured got piled on the one due to the Credit Default Swap fiasco. TSHTF, and is getting splattered everywhere.
The facts of increasing debt and printing money lead inevitably to runaway inflation. Add on Cap and Trade, and health care reform costs, and you have the ingredaments for a wondrous financial wreck.

ObamaRepublican said: ‘I think Democrats are more rational and faithful to science, progress and equality’.

Rational? Obama was on-air saying the U.S. is out of money. Then the porkulus bill comes to fruition. Wow..

Faithful to Science? Gore compared the skepticism to his cash cow – AGW to Winston Churchill’s battle to overthrow Nazism! Even worse is Gore ’subtly’ comparing himself to one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century!

Progress? Progress is giving me no decision, or taxing me more to towards health care/ already possessing health insurance? That’s digression pal..

Equality? Apparently pay-to-play Bill Richardson, ‘race discussion, America is cowards’ Eric Holder, ‘..a wise Latina..’ Sotomayor, ..’Why do you feel Obama would be a better negotiator for Middle East Peace? – ‘Because he’s African American. Because he’s a black man..’ John Kerry.

The list for ‘Equality busters’ can go on and on but it’s moot..

I want to begin by reiterating my great appreciation for your work. I was surprised and pleased to recognize you at the event, and flabbergasted when you spoke with me on camera (although only my sign made it into the final clip).

That said, I think there’s substantial risk that your piece may lead people to draw incorrect conclusions about the event. By focusing so heavily on the interview with Richard Geno, you may lead the viewer to think that the crowd reflected the strength of his organization.

Instead, the crowd reflected something quite different. As I circulated among them, there were pockets of Rand-ites, Libertarians, Republicans, anti-tax, anti-federal, EFF’ers, veterans….there were all kinds of people there. And, as your video well shows, they’d each picked up a pen, glue, tape, posterboard, a stick, whatever — and made something.

I’ve seen videos from Zombie where it seems that hundreds of people are carrying the same placards from ANSWER or World Can’t Wait — but all of the signs I saw on Sunday were different, handcrafted, and individual.

These aren’t people that fit easily into boxes. They’re not aligned with any particular political movement. They’re creative and inventive. They’re not joiners. They may have hit the limit line with the bailouts, with the porkulus, with the cap’n'raid, with universal Medicare….but they’re getting increasingly annoyed at the way things are going and will all show up to the same street corner regardless.

I don’t know Richard Geno, and I don’t belong to his organization. But I’m willing to fight with him until this Obamanation is driven back into the statist slime from whence it sprang. And when the battle is over, he’ll go his way and I’ll go mine, and we’ll wish each other well when we part.

And that’s the real strength being shown. Our nation has become top dog on this planet by taking in loners, outcasts and misfits, and encouraging them to chase their own dreams, create, and build. I would have rather seen more of the dreamers, creators, and builders and less of allied groups.

Jul 9, 2009 - 10:10 pm 33. jr565:

Cap and trade as per Obama will NECESSARILY cause energy prices to skyrocket. This is according to Obama mind you. So, obama republican, if cap and trade passes and in fact energy prices do skyrocket, can we have your word now that you will blame it on Obama? can you say now that based on the rhetoric it does appear that his intent is to drive up energy prices?
How willl that impact the economy I wonder? This is now Obama’s economy. Once he went into his various stimuluses he took control.Once the dems got control of congress they, who control the purse strings took control of the economy. Oh,wait they controlled both housed prior to Obama taking office? Why isn’t it their economy? Now Obama has a veto proof majority in the senate? How is it possible that this is not Obama’s economy?

Jul 10, 2009 - 12:55 am 34. Arius:

Actually the Democrats took control of Congress in 2006. Why are they off the hook for what has happened since then?

Re Cap and Trade, it will drive the US into a greater depression. It is a suicidal act of our idiot government.

I point a finger at both the Democrats and Republicans for the mess we are in. Step outside of the false left/right divide to see things as they are.
