The weekend before November’s elections, Frank Rich of the New York Times wrote a curious column titled, “The G.O.P. Stalinists Invade Upstate New York.”
Apparently, in Rich’s mind, because conservatives thought — accurately as it turned out — that Dede Scozzafava, running for Congress in New York’s 23rd District was a Republican in Name Only, and they preferred a more conservative candidate, that made them…Stalinists!
On the other hand, it was rather refreshing to see a journalist with the New York Times use the word pejoratively. Needless to say, that hasn’t always been the case, as we’ll explore in the latest edition of Silicon Graffiti, including:
- Thomas Friedman’s love for Big Brother in China and Cuba.
- The Time’s necrophilic 1953 obit for Stalin.
- Walter Duranty: ace foreign correspondent.
- A quote from the New Yorker on Pinch, Punch, and “the other guy’s country.”
- And the Time’s first ombudsman on where the Gray Lady sits on the ideological spectrum.

Nov 18, 2009 - 12:32 am 2. rob:it seemed to me that the thomas friedman quote about the gun pointing at elian gonzales’ handler that ‘warmed his heart’ was sarcasm on the part of friedman. then i read the friedman article and, nope. no sarcasm intended or taken.
it’s ok for liberals to embrace totalitarianism because they have a compassion due to their liberalism that conservatives do not possess, apparently. how arrogant.
Nov 18, 2009 - 1:16 am 3. David Thomson:Dede Scozzafava stabbed the “moderate” Republicans in the back. She made them look like a bunch of fools. Charlie Crist’s position in the race for the U.S. Senate seat in Florida was severely weakened. It is now very clear that the conservative candidate would have likely won had Scozzafava not supported the Democrat. She blew a golden a golden opportunity to prove that at the end of the day the RINOs are loyal Republicans.
Only a historical illiterate would ever compare conservative Republicans to Stalinists. Frank Rich needs to read the works of Richard Pipes, Robert Conquest, and countless other scholars of that dark era in history. Oh gosh, I forgot that he probably did thoroughly study the works of fellow New York Times journalist Walter Duranty. No wonder he is so confused.

Nov 18, 2009 - 3:02 am 5. Spinoneone:David is right that Mr. Rich needs to do some additional reading. My I suggest “Liberal Fascism” by Jonah Goldberg? Since the NYT has always been a strong supporter of that political genre most of the contents should be very familiar to him.
Nov 18, 2009 - 4:11 am 6. David Thomson:“David is right that Mr. Rich needs to do some additional reading.”
Frank Rich will not likely ever catch up on his reading. He earns a living in an echo camber and interacts culturally only with those sharing his prejudices. Rich probably hasn’t read a serious and challenging work during his entire adult life. He doesn’t feel a compelling need to do so. After all, isn’t he a liberal? Such an individual is automatically presumed to be a brilliant thinker. Why would anyone actually expect him to do some reading. This is one of the main reason why MSM journalism is dying. These so-called professional journalists are normally very ignorant and poorly educated people. Many of them would literally have to quit working for one or two years just to have any chance whatsoever to acquire enough of an education to perform their duties.

Well, they are Stalinists.
Don’t you remember when they rounded up of tens of thousands of innocent American citizens, including small children, and threw them in concentration camps during WWII?
Oh wait….
That was the “liberal” Democrats that did that.
Never mind.
