Learning from the Olympics

I am one of those people who was happy to see the International Olympic Committee shut out the Chicago bid. I know that people on the Left accuse me of rooting against my country, but — as usual — the people on the Left are wrong. I wasn’t even rooting against a President I do not generally admire, although I was glad to see him humiliated publicly in this fashion.

How can you square these statements?

Well, I feel that Barack Obama has shown – many more times than I needed to reach a conclusion on the subject — that he believes that there is no problem so intractable that it cannot be remedied by his personal intervention and a jolly good oration, which of course will reference the Miracle of his Rise to show that if only we would ______ then  ______ would finally be able to see the _____ of its ways and we’d all be able to ______ at long last.

This Olympic fiasco, I hoped, would be embarrassing enough and pointed enough to provide a clear data point that this is not always the case, and this lesson, had it sunk in,  would come at very small cost to America. After all, the loss of the Olympics in a city is considerably less painful than losing the city itself… which is where this kind of naive ego-centrism can lead us when dealing with ruthlessly self-interested regimes like Iran, Russia and North Korea — expanding nuclear powers all.

Barack Obama is not accustomed to getting the kind of faceful of egg he was given at Copenhagen. I had hoped that this would be enough to perhaps persuade him to look at the results rather than the desire, and perhaps conclude that there is almost nothing — not even a really good speech — that can persuade people into acting against their own self interest, and that he might perhaps reflect upon the fact that instead of Oprah and the First Lady, Chicago would have better been served in my friend Scott Ott’s words, by sending “traffic flow specialists, civic engineers, architects, economists… all the experts needed to convince the IOC that Chicago was up for the task.”

In other words, lead instead of cheerlead. But this President seems incapable of doing that. I don’t know how many days he has spent actually behind the desk in the Oval Office as — you know — Chief Executive, but given the number of town halls, events, ceremonies and other on-camera activities I would be willing to bet the number is not large.

Anyway, that was my hope: that humiliation on the cheap might persuade The World’s Smartest Politician to show some intelligence and change his mind based upon the evidence, the way his presecessor, The Greatest Moron in the History of The World, did when confronting a failing strategery in Iraq. That hope lasted for all of a few days. Now we see 150 doctors wearing white lab coats assembled to help Barack Obama give another career-saving speech, this time trying to get the 93% of Americans who are fundamanetally happy with their health care to act against their own self interests.

And by having them wear white lab coats, you see, he is making sure we realize they are doctors.  But I remain confused. Couldn’t they also be lab technicians? Perhaps they need to wear that reflector thing on their foreheads. Damn it, no — Dentists wear those too, and no one would be persuaded to give up their current insurance just because a hundred and fifty dentists wearing white lab coats and reflectors nod in agreement. What they should have had was stethoscopes around their necks! That would have gotten this bill passed!

And so it goes. Yet another speech, with props appropriate for a fourth grade show and tell, to sell the rubes on something they seem unwilling to want to buy. And another appeal to oratory in place of substance. And meanwhile, out at the edge of the campfire’s glow, lean and cruel wolves circle red-eyed and hungry, watching and learning.

Campaigning is easy. Governing is much harder. Sadly, he is only fit to campaign, and it doesn’t work for governing. Governing requires actual substance, not just style. (Well, some style might be nice; like not throwing like a girl.)

Sadly, when he got rejected, his poll numbers went up, as people rallied to their President when the world dissed him, not understanding that he deserved some serious dissing. He’ll, thus, learn nothing.

Obama is still tripping on being President thinking he’s a bigger rap star than Jay-Zee. What does Obama do but lay down a non stop rap and try to sell millions of records? Obama obsesses over poll results the way JayZee does record sales. When you are a con man then talk is your currency. Not taking constructive action

This smack down will not penetrate. He is out of touch due to surrounding himself with stooges and sycophants. They will keep on message in his bubble.

It will take a lot more to shake and wake this jello head. Even then we will be dealing with red jello. It is much better in life to be guided by principles but when you have been abandoned by your mother and by your two Muslim fathers …we don’t have a healthy situation here

Baraq Hussein 0bama thought it was going to be date night, beer summits, victory gardens, and tennis matches teleprompter exchanges in vague platitudes, and veiled threats and warnings.

B.O has never accomplished anything in his life; except showing up and scamming all the good will that rolls in. Anything that you give him comes with another price tag, and you are the one who’se going to be picking up the check, that is, unless he owes you one, and we all know who that is right now- big banks who expect payback (citi-bank, AIG, etc), unions (Chrysler GM), Pharmaceuticals, Insurance companies, you know, all his crony welfare capitalist buddies.

0bama is bored by all this now; he believed the messianic rhetoric, so he’s just waiting for the next perk up the ladder; the others who set him up knew all along it was a just bait and switch technique.

If anything it shows just how generous the American people are; but the American people don’t like it when someone or some person’s have tried to play them for suckers.

Yet there he goes on his first night back, out on “date night” for a photo op.

As Mr. Whittle pointed out, this was a lesson that comes with the least possible cost, almost negligible, to this country.

I call on this hopeless, compromised, spineless, incompetent, corrupt, miserable puppet-king to resign. Over this. Before things get more out of hand. You are incapable of responsible leadership, not without first suffering a total and complete breakdown. (And then what would he do?)

By way of comparison, his fellow democrat candidate, rep. Dennis Kucinich was neither vague nor ambiguous in his opposition to both the wars and presence of American soldiers in the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters of operation. He called unequivocally for the end to American participation in these wars, he was clear in his stance and opposition, during his campaign, which is the (ostensible) stance of the extreme Left in this country.

I say “ostensible”, because I don’t believe the Left is for withdrawl, in the first place: I believe they seek defeat, (as per the Vietnam scenario) and they can taste this perverse and psychotic goal, nay victory within their grasp: 0bama knows this strategy full well, yet pretends otherwise, as though he is “…unable to make a decision”.

And this is in violation of the oath of office he took when he became commander in chief of our Armed Forces. This is why he must resign: Because his (unstated and therefore hidden) objective is an unacceptable option. And as per the “bait and switch”, is not revealed to the American Public.

That is why those calling for a strategy of victory, and those calling for a total withdrawl of forces in Iraq and Afghanistan (what about Bosnia? Hmmm?) must unite and stand up to 0bama on the floors of the House and Senate, and do what can be done to stop this charade before it gets even worse, and lethal.

0bama appears to know not the difference between conceit and arrogance: for in conceit, one who knows little or nothing pretends to know all, and know all about everything: this is highly doubtful.

When you are right, you are compelled to be arrogant: 0bama keeps his agenda and plans secret; and proffers a phony possibility (the …“can’t make up his mind” ruse) in its place.

And he is not arrogant about his intentions. As I said above, he keeps them secret. So arrogance is not a satisfactory explanation.

This goes along with the reference to support from the AMA. Who populates the AMA? Try Doctors with no specialty other than being residents, emergency room doctors who don’t wish to be in private practice and non-practicing physicians most of whom are dedicated to competently treating their patients.

Physicians with specialties attain the title of Diplomate in the specialty they represent. Most of them have offices, employ people, pay high taxes including malpractice premiums, and incur the expense of actually providing a service used by emergency room doctors. Being surrounded by doctors who work for an employer who provides coverage for them does little to advance the cause of physicians who, in all probability, show up the final bill as “consultants” who shoulder the lion’s share of liability. I will leave it to your analytic skills to determine who needs/supports tort reform the most.

Obama and the “white coats” is nothing more than smoke and mirrors providing cover for the special interest group of tort lawyers like John Edwards, master of the junk science crowd, in bed with Obama.

Really? Just like every other president has been roundly criticized for not groveling at the feet of the UN writ small IOC? Because try as I might, I don’t remember any other president personally lobbying for a lost and trivial cause, and I don’t remember any criticism being directed at them for it. I do remember the infantile plastic turkey stuff, though, just in case you don’t.

Why? Because they knew what being the President of the United States meant, and they knew that is a pay grade or two above mayor.

Obama is a small man trying fruitlessly to fill a very large pair of shoes. His gigantic ego and his unquenchable need for aggrandizement led him to believe that he could bend the IOC’s will simply by deigning to orate to them, and he embarrassed us all.

I am concerned that, with few exceptions, fouth grade is the level that the typical American voter is at. As a one-time substitute teacher, my observations suggest that fourth grade is the dividing point between a fantasy, dream world and a realistic view of reality. That is looking at real world problems whilst riding a unicorn, waving a magic wand.

Of course Mr. Obama didn’t learn. As Gaffe (#2) and Mr. Whittle more eloquently put it, Obama brings nothing to the table. Those that support Obama have fallen into the cult of personality. He has no experience leading anything. Heck, he has no experience doing anything. He’s a stuffed suit with all the qualities of Dorothy’s companions down the yellow brick road – no brain, no heart, no courage.

He’s like a modern-day Jimmy Carter.

Oct 6, 2009 - 4:26 am 21. ~Paules:

Mr. Obama values his celebrity status more seriously than the office he holds. He has the singular talent of most actors which is the ability to deliver a script convincingly – words written for him, but not by him.

When it comes to policy, his ideology is less important than the constant demands of his ego. He craves the constant adulation of the crowd. The quiet confidence that comes from knowledge and self-reflection is utterly missing. It’s all about me, me, me all the time. I’ll leave it to professionals to diagnose the condition, but I know arrested development when I see it.

Is Mr. Obama capable of changing his mind based on the data? Based on a logical interpretation of events? Based on facts? I rather doubt it. It seems to me that the maintenance of his ego is job one. Watch for his mean and dark side to emerge when the public finally rejects him.

I can only imagine the rolling of the eyes that took place as Michelle and Barrack stepped forward with their “personal” messages in an effort to woo the committee members to vote for them and their city. I have no criticism of the President supporting the Chicago bid. It was nice to see him support the country for a change. As a Chicago area resident, I would have loved to go to some of the games (my selfish interest) but it probably would have been a financial burden on the taxpayers, and without doubt would have been a bonanza for the local corrupt politicians, contractors, etc (damn near all of them).

Oct 6, 2009 - 5:02 am 26. Anne B.:

Here is one Chicagoan who was *relieved* to hear that we wouldn’t be getting the games. Tax hikes, cost overruns, big ugly jerry-built stadia which probably wouldn’t even be ready in time, traffic and security problems. If the Barry/Michelle/Oprah roadshow really did cost us the games, then I thank them. (Though in hindsight I think that perhaps Rio had it in the bag all along, and the televised vote was just for show.)

The reply at #3 sums Barry up. He has never had to work for anything in his life. He’s the Affirmative Action hire: petted and praised (and paid) just for showing up. What a shock to learn that this doesn’t work outside his little circle of admirers.

However, the main point here is if the Administration learned anything from this. His Administration’s competence does not have a very good track record (to grossly understate the situation), and now it should be apparent that his approach to “reset” international relations is interpretted as weakness. He also needs to learn that leading this country in the international arena is not a popularity contest. It is not as important to be liked as it is to be respected by foreign countries, and feared by thugs.

@21. ~Paules: – Watch for his mean and dark side to emerge when the public finally rejects him.

True dat.

Until January 1996, I believed that self-esteem was merely a meter with little, if any, causal efficacy. The lead article in the Psychological Review convinced me that I was wrong, and that self-esteem is causal: Roy Baumeister and his colleagues (1996) reviewed the literature on genocidal killers, on hit men, on gang leaders, and on violent criminals. They argued that these perpetrators have high self-esteem, and that their unwarranted self-esteem causes violence. Baumeister’s work suggests that if you teach unwarrantedly high self-esteem to children, problems will ensue. A sub-group of these children will also have a mean streak in them. When these children confront the real world, and it tells them they are not as great as they have been taught, they will lash out with violence.

And now that we’ve had our second first black president, there is no history to be made by re-electing him. There is, however, some history to be made by electing certain likely challengers.

We’re already using it here in our office when we know someone says a bald faced lie, is grossly exaggerating, is feigning association with a group or idea, takes credit for something they didn’t do or is hiding more than they disclose. Brad is trying to pull an “Obama” on all of us. The latest usage based on current events applies when one is all braggadocio prior to closing a contract they’ve put little to no effort into and typically do not deliver the goods. In this instance we label such a failure as “No cigar, Obama”.

Alternatively create an “O” with your index fingers and thumbs while showing disappointment.

World stage performances, such as the Olympics or Cophenhagen, are what it’s all about to them. They believe the world revolves around diplomacy, but their own brand of it… the talk-only variety, with no threat backing it up.

No, the nation has elected a weak, ineffectual Darling, and the world’s tyrants are, as you say, circling the perimeter with their fangs dripping blood.

Nothing will teach Obama a lesson. Even a bomb dropping on the U.S. will be met with more cries of “this requires immediate discussion!”

Oct 6, 2009 - 6:44 am 48. misanthropicus:

On Obama’s Waterloo Olympics, Geography, Liberal Superstitions & Peter’s Principles (Part “n”)

Time and again:

A) It’s the geography, stupid – no matter how “transactional” the IOU politics are, there still is some idealism amongst those voting jackets (particularly the Euros), who want the radiance of the Olympic events to spread as uniformly as possible on the globe (I am a card-carrying sports hater, to clarify my position in this matter – I see nothing but “panem & circense” in this, fact well understood & used by fascists and commies alike).
So, in the present situation, the UU had very little chances to overcome the voting states’ sympathy for Brazil, since the American Southern Hemisphere never hosted an Olympic game in history, while the Northern American Hemi had SIX! And the fact that Brazil clearly has the ability to handle the matter, financially, made the deal simply unreachable for the US, Obama & Michelle’s presence adding to the US winning assets less weight than a constipated robin’s dropping.

B) However, there is a much more disturbing aspect to this Olympics affair than losing some sports business, aspect which is the clear belief nurtured by many Americans who are still allowed to vote (and issue children, as well!) that Obama’s presence/ intervention could/can change(d) this, or other unfolding processes & events in the larger world.

This is very scary, indeed, and not only because Obama sincerely believes this, too – but because this wide-spread public superstition is STILL LEGITIMIZING Obama’s absurd (if not seditious) presidency, and enables him to further, incompetenly tinker with other, vastly more complex and dangerous affairs, where Obama’s serene doltishness can bring nothing but misery for this country.

The Olympic games affair is over – “tant pis” would Marie-Claude say, and this is right.
But the manifestations of superstition that have surrounded Obama magical trip to Danemark, and the fact that we live in a society where there are so many (voters) still believing that Obama is able to change Jupiter’s orbit (or Iran’s, Rusia’s or China’s geopolitical objectives), with a speeach about himself are something to worry about, because this protective cushion will give him the chance to hit next time against genuine, major interests of this nation -

Believe Peter’s principle: Obama will not exit the stage without fulfilling his highest level of incompetence – very costly situation for America -

And since the “anti-patriotic” accusations come from Bill Ayres, Jane Fonda’s and Michael Moore’s ilk – the auditions for Monty Python have stopped twenty years ago, guys -

Another reason why I’m glad that Chicago didn’t get the Olympics is because it would have rewarded corruption.

Everyone knows that Chicago is a corrupt city. It is probably the most openly corrupt city in America. So, why on earth, should we reward this type of behavior?

I’m amazed that here in the United States of America, that absolutely nothing has been done about the dirty political environment in Chicago. People now take it as a given. And no one even challenges it.

An openly dirty city, with greedy sell-my-soul politicians, does not deserve something that the world still looks on with hope and admiration.

I’m glad that Valerie Jarrett, Mayor Daley, President Obama and the whole crooked bunch got smacked. If the IOC can do it, maybe, just maybe, we’ll have some Americans with spine who are willing to take on and bring down the whole bunch.

Oct 6, 2009 - 7:00 am 53. Poor Citizen:

Its a shame that the author is taking it so tough because we did not get the bid. I am much older and I can assure that its not the first time America did not get a bid for an Olympics and not the last time. You learn with maturity and experience that it has really nothing to do with personality and/or failure, however, politics does play a part. Dont give up hope, I am sure that a. Rio will do a tremendous job and b. The next time a city gets to host an Olympics, they too, will do a great job. Stay strong cuz just like the president says “the audacity of hope.”

Oct 6, 2009 - 7:08 am 55. Michael W. Perry:

You almost got it right. I worked in a hospital once. Long lab coats usually meant lab techs, the people who do blood draws. Nurses could wear a variety of tunic tops, so the key was to look for white slacks. But that didn’t work either. Some parents, whose kids were there a long time, took to wearing while slacks because they saw their role as almost medical. Many understood their child’s condition better than the doctors.

Stethoscopes aren’t themselves a sign. Quite a few hospital staff wear them. The one sign that almost always worked (or at least did then) was wearing a pricey double-tubed stethoscope. They’re only useful for catching subtle sounds like malfunctioning heart valves, and that’s usually a diagnosis only MDs are concerned with. Regular hospital staff wear one with a single tube that divides to go to each ear. It works well enough for most purposes, is rugged and costs about one tenth the price.

Keep in mind that Obama and company aren’t concerned about the well-informed, meaning those who see through a white-coat ploy. Those people already have solid opinions on way or the other. They’re aiming at the clueless sort who think what Obama is doing must be good because the press has tagged it “health care reform.” They’re the people who believe in “hope and change.”

For Obama, this had NOTHING to do with country or games! This was another of his and Chicago’s crooked scams. The were millions, maybe, billions to be made from land deals, building contracts, phantom jobs, kick backs, pay offs, and other shady deals. Chicago, it’s aldermen, the Daley’s, the community organizers, union bosses, the three card monte dealers on the south side, all know how to make bucks out of such things.
This was Obama’s opportunity for pay back to all the hustlers who helped him in the past. He failed!!

Let’s name them…afterall THEY are the ones telling Obama what to do, when to move, what to say, how to smile (the list goes on). How did this consortium which now makes up the real presidency come into play. It’s a dangerous group. No mistaking that!

Oct 6, 2009 - 7:47 am 62. cfbleachers:

My poor hometown. It really can’t catch a break. For years, if you met a foreigner and they asked where you were from…and you told them Chicago, they would smile broadly and fix their hands into a machine gun pose and start air-Capone rat-a-tat-tatting.

After 1968, a certain segment of the population would give a knowing glance to anyone under 30 and ask if the “crooked cops” ever administered a beating to your cranium.

During many of the sporting seasons, the hapless Cubs or hapless Bears or hapless Hawks took turns bringing on national comedic bloodsport.

And now…this.

Dragged across the world stage like poorly stitched ragdoll, clumsy, limp and tattered for the world to see…

This was the near equivalent of watching Ali dispatch Jean Pierre Coopman, the “Lion of Flanders”, in a match so one-sided, Coopman was drinking champagne between rounds and Ali was laughing so hard he couldn’t and wouldn’t hit the guy for a while.

The sham of a presentation, so unworthy of even entering the ring…was there simply to offer a little circus act distraction.

I suppose the main differences between the two contests were, a) that Ali at least let Coopman hang around for 5 rounds before he administered the beating everyone knew was coming; b)Coopman was at least self-aware enough to know he was a tomato can.

So, a first round knockout in a fight we were never in, in the first place…placed on a national stage, because the Lion of Hyde Park brought his pride to bear on the proceedings…was in the offing.

And we all know what happened next…down goes poseur, down goes poseur, down goes poseur.

Wait til next year.

Rachel Lucas
Smart, funny, fearless, cute and the inventor of the! slam! critique! format! The nicest person I have never met.

USS Clueless
The most superb analysis of military, engineering and scientific systems available in this medium. Read EVERYTHING in his Best Log Entries and Essential Library. When you have finished you will feel like you spent hours under the Krell mind machine.

James Lileks
The Bleats are hysterical, the Screeds are brilliant and hysterical, and there is no more entertaining afternoon on the web than a tour of The Institute of Official Cheer. Beyond genius.

Belmont Club
Stunningly original insights and what has been simply the best analysis of events on the ground in Iraq that I have ever come across. Genuinely magnificent thinking.

The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler
Emperor Misha I gets his blood pressure up so that you don't have to. Real red-meat attacks on Idiotarians and America-haters, both foreign and domestic.

Transterrestrial Musings
Rocket science analysis of space and politics from a genuine rocket scientist!

The Futurist
Profound megatrends and very original insights. Plus graphs, so it must be true!

IMAO
I could write as funny as this if I wanted to. I could. I could! Damn you, Frank...

National Review Online
Top-notch conservative commentary from actual journalists! Watch especially for Goldberg, Derbyshire, and the TITAN of conservative thought, the brilliant, irreplaceable Victor Davis Hanson.

Instapundit
All hail the Blogfather! Glenn Reynolds practically invented the medium. Without him, you'd be staring at your screensaver right now. If you want to know what's going on RIGHT NOW you go to the Instameister. So go!
