Terje:

Michael,

I’m hearing that the Iranian Republican Guard Corp has issued orders that either Iranian proxy forces in Iraq, i.e. Sadr’s “Mahdi Army” or specialized units of the IRGC operating inside Iraq are to KIDNAP American soldiers in order to possible negotiate an exchange for the prisoners from Erbil that the US is holding.

Kidnapping is common in warfare history but more so in the Mideast. It precipitated the August Israel/Lebanese war after all.

Your thoughts?

ML:

Yes I have heard that and I believe it.

I posted this a few days ago. There is still no account of K’s meeting with anyone other than “insiders,’ who could be expected to corroborate any story. And at least two scheduled meetings with distinguished foreigners–the Muslim ambassadors to Tehran and the Pakistani delegation–that were cancelled.

..and to those that say the Iraq War has reduced our capabilities I, humbly say this:

We now have Iran surrounded:

1. The US has over 100k American soldiers and 45 bases on the Iraq/Iran border;

2. The US just completed building a huge air & land capable base in western Afghanistan that is so far west and so far from anything having to do with Afghanistan, Taliban or al Qaeda that the only strategic value is its proximty to Iran (750 acres in Herat province that is only 20 miles from Iran);

3. Numerous bases in the ’stans (primarily Uzbekistan) to the north of Iran;

4. And of course two aircraft carrier groups in the Persian Gulf-south of Iran.

No, far from being “too stretched”, the US military is right where it should be -assuming this or the next president ultimately decies metastizie our COVERT plan to stop Iran’s nuclear ambition to an OVERT plan.

After all Sen. McCain has said described scenario of Iran possessing nuclear weapons as “Armageddon”.

Machiavelli on Modern Leadership: Why Machiavelli’s Iron Rules are as Timely and Important Today as Five Centuries Ago

by Michael Ledeen

American Enterprise Institute resident scholar Ledeen offers an updated version of the rules for leadership laid down by Machiavelli. Its the nature of humans to do evil, and war is our natural state. Anyone who would wield power in such a setting, writes Ledeen, echoing Machiavelli, “must be prepared to fight at all times.” This is as true in business, sports, and politics as it is on the battlefield.
